Yep
This scam appeared in Finland over a year ago.

Prior art from 2006
Back in '06 (prior to the '09 filing date), this guy modded a mouse with a nokia lcd screen. I wonder how many of apple's patent claims are invalidated by this?

Re:Aren't there already products like this?
_Touch_screen is new, otherwise:

Re:I think the air force tried something like this
For my part, I fit the "sweaty geek"-cliché all too well when the weather starts getting warm (except I shower and stuff). Having some form of active cooling in my keyboard/gamepad/mouse would easily be far more awesome than heating because after a few rounds of high paced console gaming, I tend to get somewhat sweaty palms. Something like this perhaps?

Re:Well
You're just not good enough at case-modding then!
People have already managed to put them in beverage containers:

Suspended Animation In Mice - hardhack
Here's a neat way to do Suspended Animation In Mice as a DIY hardhack project.
I believe this has even been covered on Slashdot before.
Oh, and this is from 2002.

some info on homebrew
I did some research into "homebrew" this week and ordered a M3 Perfect Simply for $45 (came to about $62 with shipping). It's a slot-1 cartridge (same slot that uses DS games). You insert a Micro SD flash card into the cartridge and off you go. It plays ROMs perfectly, without any need for conversion. Savegames are saved to the flash card. Its only downside is that it doesn't play GBA ROMs, which I didn't really care about.
My second choice was the R4, which is basically the same thing - slot-1 cartridge with flash card - but didn't look like as good for some reason (it might be, for all I know).
If you want GBA ROM support, you're looking at a slot-2 cartridge. They're generally more expensive and many (all?) need a booting card in slot-1. Bundles are available.
As far as homebrew goes, the M3 Simply plays videos and mp3s straight out of the box. It has a skinnable shell. There are applications that will turn your DS into a PDA or telephone, but I'm not sure if they work with the M3 - maybe someone here knows more on this subject.
Try to avoid homebrew solutions that require you to flash your DS bios. It voids your warranty.

Re:That DIY HTPC just became economical!
For the case, here's a PC looking case, or a couple of more AV friendly cases by Zalman or a nice Silverstone that's almost indistinguishable from AV equipment.
As for regarding MythTV, if you buy your parts according to the Dragon reference system, you shouldn't have any issues whatsoever, although you may be spending a few more bucks than if you're willing to spend your own time working with a custom configuration of lowest $ parts.
And lastly, let me agree with the Mac Mini. It's slick! -

Again, the similar kind of problem that I had with the ShinyShuttle article. Mod or a Review? In the end, a stock product gets to be something different than what it was when we started, so I think that it justifies this to be a modding article.
:)Not so long time ago, one of our forum members suggested for me to take a look at the product we are about to test in this article; Plasti Dip. Article title says Super Grip but that just felt a good name for the article and have nothing to do with the Plasti Dip Internation's Super Grip product that is mainly used for fabrics. Anyway, in this modding article we will see what these rubber coating products can offer for modders, gamers and DIY people in general. As Corpes0 from our forum told us, Airsoft enthusiasts have been using similar products to improve grip on their airsoft guns. It should be only natural for this stuff to work on computer input devices too. Read on and see how it turned out.
The product
Spray or not to spray?Plasti Dip can be bought in two different forms/containers; Liquid and Spray. Both of them are available in different colors though not all retailers stock all of them.
Colors available are:
Black Red Blue Yellow White Clear / TransparentThe store that I visited had Clear in spray and Black, Blue and Red as liquid. I ended up choosing one spray can (clear) and one can of liquid rubber coating for this article. Price for the products were around 15 euros for each can.
Dangerous?"Haitallinen" = Harmfull, "Erittäin helposti syttyvä" = Extremely flammable and finally "Ympäristölle haitallinen" = Danger to environment. Fish swimming with backstrokes should be a pretty clear sign that these products are dangerous if not handled properly. In fact so dangerous that they can't be sended via regular post. As always, I don't take responsibility if you manage to harm yourself with these chemicals so read the label carefully and follow the instructions to the letter.
First test
DippingAs a first test subject I decided to use a regular adjustable wrench. This is one of the targets that these rubber coating products are meant for. Non-slip handle will make the tool easier and safer to use. Just take a piece of string or wire and dip the item inside the can so that all the areas you want to get covered are submerged. You could use for example a brush to apply the coating to the item.
ResultAfter at least four hours of drying you get a smooth and rubbery finish on the tool. The coat isn't too thick but you can build up the thickness but dipping the tool to the can several times. Surface feels, well, rubber and it makes the handle and the tool very comfortable to use. A good result with metallic tool, what about input devices made out of plastic?

Patent
Now we are just waiting to see what company patents the "idea" first. Something in the lines of Antec and Led Fans. Too bad that I didn't have enough money for patent when I invented these lighted mousepads (GlowPad) back in 2001. Now I'm holding my breath and waiting when the first BreezePad comes out.

Problems With Microsoft Mice
I came acorss this mod one time and thought it would be incredibly cool with a blue LED instead, but I thought about it and the plexi used for the mouse wheel probably wouldn't be as grippy/nice feeling as the slightly rubbery surface of the wheel I had. I looked around and finally I found a mouse that came with a clear scroll wheel. it was the new m$ Blue Intellimouse. I bought it ($20 after a $10 rebate) and ordered some superbright blue LEDs. Once they came I hijacked voltage from the USB cable and put one directly behind the clear scroll wheel. It lights up quite nicely and looks awesome, Then I replaced the red LED in the back and the one for the sensor with blue ones. It worked fine and it was bright enough that the responsiveness didn't drop, but... all microsoft optical mice have the clear red plastic for the bottom. It glowed quite brightly when there were red LEDs in it, but i unfortunately discovered that the red plastic completely filters out the blue light. So the only light coming from it is out of the wheel, and of course the bottom if you pick it up. I attached some longer leads to the one in the back and and siliconed it directly too the little red oval in the butt of the mouse and managed to get a faint purple glow out of it. It still looks pretty cool, but it dissapointingly glows less. My TI-83+ Silver on the other hand glows very nicely with the 2 blue LEDs i put in it.
-
You think that's cool?
Check out Project Cryo.
-
bumdass
I don't know... If the LED doesn't light you say "I need to reverse the leads". Now, that doesn't make any sense. Also, what's a "soder"?
More cool. Yes, from the fiery bowels of /.

I oppose you!
It's official now! Customers hate popups! This is serious opposition! Um... RESISTANS! Yeah!
But wait... we already knew that. So why are they still around? Oh, yeah. They're a cash cow.
The next big thing is probably going to be those meta refresh ads that force you to look at an ad for N seconds before showing the actual page. That seems just jaw-droppingly arrogant and obnoxious enough to be a commercially viable avenue, don't you think?
-
A more useful mouse mod
For a slightly more useful mouse mod, check out this MouseFan mod, which will cool your hand as you surf. Seems like something that could even go commercial.
Its too bad I have a cordless mouse and this would drain the battery, otherwise I'd probably do it myself. -
replace the switches
Mouses use momentary on click plunger switches soldered onto a circuit board. Replace the switches with quiet momentary on plungers and cut them to proper height. Probably best to use plungers with stiffer springs to keep a tactile feel of on/off. Spray the moving parts with silicone grease and enjoy your silent mouse. Then put a fan in it to cool your sweaty palm
