It's Seibel E-systems
The whole site is built on Siebel E-Systems, an old CRM system, which generates the pages. Seibel is more or less defunct, having been acquired by Oracle.
The code is spectacularly version-specific. The error messages in Javascript code on the site indicate how tightly coupled this code is to very specific quirks of older software:
- "The script debugging feature is typically automatically enabled by Microsoft Visual Studio products. To improve performance of the Web browser for use with Siebel employee applications, it is recommended to disable script debugging in the Internet Explorer browser."
- "To fix this manually, in Internet Explorer menu, choose Tools > Internet Options > Security. Then choose the %1 security zone and click on Custom Level. Change %2 to %3."
- "To fix this manually, in Internet Explorer, choose Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Options. Clear the %1 check box."
- "Failed to retrieve Internet Explorer version from this machine."
- "There are some recommended settings not set correctly. You may experience functionality or performance problems. Are you sure you want to continue?"
- "This is required for use of Message bar, CTI toolbar, Workflow designer, Personalization business rules designer, Smartscript designer, Org-chart designer, Sales Pipeline Charts and Marketing campaign designer and other features."

Now it's Julie Larson-Green, who is twice as bad. She also pushed through the MS-Office Ribbon Interface http://www.microsoft.com/about/technicalrecognition/julie-larson-green.aspx in addition to her latest "triumph", the Metro interface.

Ads in Apps vs iAd
Yes, if something, this is a feature to me. Both a Win8 tablet and phone without the intrusive behavior....
Let me introduce you to http://adsinapps.microsoft.com/ Ads in Apps or as Microsoft say "Start monetizing with advertising Ads in Apps for Windows 8 has the features that developers want."
For the Apple users amongst up http://advertising.apple.com/ iad "Every brand has a great story to tell. With iAd you can put that story into the hands of millions of iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users around the globe."
Clearly your not using Google

Re:Money well spent
No, conflicker has worm elements. So, the hard part of the clean up is not per se an individual machine. Its that you need to solve the baseline problems that allow conflicker to do its thing.
Re-installing 'stuff' won't make this go away. Doing it wrong just reinfects the machine.
So, as I said, what has to be done is the cause and baselines that allow conflicker to replicate have to be solved (harder part) - and then machines with good baselines go through clean up and go back on the network (easier part..)http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962007
Any tech learning about conflicker can read about it, and start to understand what needs to be fixed. Patch, correct password weakenesses, stop autorun etc etc. Today, this is somewhat simple as a lot of tools and detection tools exist.People in threat waving around Fdisk and re-install media saying 'they could fix this' - probably in fact are clueless and need to understand the problems involved. Conflicker breeds off poor security and bad baselines. Thats how it gets in. Thats how it replicates. Thats how it hangs around and re-infects.

Re:Come on CEO...
They a generally shared code-base for the same programs. However, Outlook is not availbale on Mac, and its replacement is not available on Windows. In the end, MS Office for Mac != MS Office for Windows.
You don't appear to be very knowledgeable about this, Outlook is available on Mac.
Presently, may be. However, MS Office for Mac has historically been known to not be very compatible with MS Office for Windows. Word would do things differently on Mac than Windows; etc. They may be doing better, but there's very likely still interoperability issues between the two.
Well assuming you can cite some of those actual problems i'm still not sure what your point is.

Re:Cooperative platformers
(Context: Why pay $500 for the next Xbox when you can use a gaming PC instead? Controller-friendly games.)
Yes, we've already dealt with that. PC is just as good for that as any console.
How would a platformer like Mega Man series work with a keyboard and mouse?
Never played Mega Man specifically, but I've played plenty of other platforms with keyboard and mouse, and they all worked just as well, or better. Which of course didn't matter, because if I'd preferred to play them with a gamepad, I have a good Logitech USB gamepad that I prefer to anything for any current console.
Or a racing game?
Works great on a keyboard, and - for me at least - better than with a gamepad. Not as well as with a wheel and pedals, but that's not what the discussion is about.
Better yet, how would cooperative platformers such as Contra or Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers or The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon work?
These days, exactly the same as on any console. Hook your PC up to your TV, plug in a couple controllers and pick your seat of choice. Or if you need some extended range to get to the sofa, get a couple wireless controllers. http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/p/xbox-360-wireless-controller-for-windows
As I see it, each player would have to buy a separate PC and a separate copy.
Again, that's entirely on the developer and/or publisher. More and more console games are going that way too, now that they all have internet capability.
I'd love for you to show me a list of worthwhile controller-friendly PC exclusives. If you don't want to do so on Slashdot, you could always do so here [pineight.com].
Just because I can make such a list doesn't mean it's worth my time to do so. If you think I'm trying to sell you on the PC gaming concept, I'm not. I couldn't care less what you game on. I'm just pointing out the obvious flaws in your arguments. But I'll still be nice. If you actually care about gaming on a PC with a gamepad, here's a couple links to get you started.

Re:Bias
Why didn't Microsoft make Silverlight platform independent?
Didn't they?
http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/
"Silverlight is a powerful development tool for creating engaging, interactive user experiences for Web and mobile applications. Silverlight is a free plug-in, powered by the .NET framework and compatible with *multiple browsers, devices and operating systems*, bringing a new level of interactivity wherever the Web works."But seriously - why would they? With more than 90% of the world's computers on their OS, it doesn't make a lot of sense for them to spend any money on that kind of effort. Now that the phone (and tablet) market is kicking their ass, the tables have turned.
QuickTime, on the other hand, never had that luxury - Apple has needed to port it to other platforms to get anyone at all to use it.
If Netflix uses HTML5 DRM, I predict game over. All the other content providers will use the same thing. And by content providers, I mean folks who do not have a vested interest in their proprietary formats (Microsoft, Apple), though maybe even they will fall in line if it means more consumers of their data.

Re:Awesome enterprise tool
It would be interesting to see how that would work for them: dropbox is a total raging clusterfuck for anything that you actually need to keep secure(I once caught a user storing fucking children's medical records on a personal dropbox account. That was not a fun chat for anybody involved...); but it's hard to deny that the consumer-derived 'cloud sharing' stuff frequently beats the IT department on usability and convenience.
If I were BitTorrent, inc. a corporate play would certainly seem sensible(not too much additional development cost on top of what they already have now, reasonable argument about why they are better than dropbox and clones(more secure, plus bittorrent clients are capable of intelligently transferring from WAN, LAN, or both, so most of the chatter would stay internal)); but I'd be a trifle nervous in the mid term about what Microsoft might do.
They've been surprisingly lousy at actually exposing it in a user-friendly and well known way(see also, Volume Shadow Copy vs. Time Machine, the former being older and arguably technologically superior, the latter being kind of a janky hack; but actually useful for the relatively tech-ignorant); but Microsoft has BITS and BranchCache already written and probably liberally supplied with group policy hooks and whatnot.
Any actual competition, in the near term, would probably come from the MS consumer line, with 'Skydrive', because Microsoft's track record on turning potentially-interesting-but-enterprisey technologies into consumer goods isn't so hot, much less doing so fast; but they've actually done some work on a very similar class of problems, and do have the technology available, just not terribly visible.

Re:Wrong platform
Those two requirements are mutually exclusive. Unless they think there is an audit trail of everyone who has ever seen Windows source code (and given that there is an enterprise source license, that is going to be one heck of an audit).

Re:Should run on Win7
Yup. The easiest is to upgrade to windows 7 Pro or Ultimate and install XP Mode
XP mode won't fix what this whole thing is about, that support for Windows XP will end next year and continuing to run it will turn into a security risk. Windows 7's XP mode is nothing else than running Windows XP in a VM, and Microsoft will officially stop support for it next year, too.

Re:Disprove my points then, Jeremy ... apk
It has come to my attention that the entire Linux community is a hotbed of so called 'alternative sexuality', which includes anything from hedonistic orgies to homosexuality to paedophilia.
What better way of demonstrating this than by looking at the hidden messages contained within the names of some of Linux's most outspoken advocates:
- Linus Torvalds is an anagram of slit anus or VD 'L,' clearly referring to himself by the first initial.
- Richard M. Stallman, spokespervert for the Gaysex's Not Unusual 'movement' is an anagram of mans cram thrill ad.
- Alan Cox is barely an anagram of anal cox which is just so filthy and unchristian it unnerves me.
I'm sure that Eric S. Raymond, composer of the satanic homosexual propaganda diatribe The Cathedral and the Bizarre, is probably an anagram of something queer, but we don't need to look that far as we know he's always shoving a gun up some poor little boy's rectum. Update: Eric S. Raymond is actually an anagram for secondary rim and cord in my arse. It just goes to show you that he is indeed queer.
Update the Second: It is also documented that Evil Sicko Gaymond is responsible for a nauseating piece of code called Fetchmail, which is obviously sinister sodomite slang for 'Felch Male' -- a disgusting practise. For those not in the know, 'felching' is the act performed by two perverts wherein one sucks their own post-coital ejaculate out of the other's rectum. In fact, it appears that the dirty Linux faggots set out to undermine the good Republican institution of e-mail, turning it into 'e-male.'
As far as Richard 'Master' Stallman goes, that filthy fudge-packer was actually quoted on leftist commie propaganda site Salon.com as saying the following: 'I've been resistant to the pressure to conform in any circumstance,' he says. 'It's about being able to question conventional wisdom,' he asserts. 'I believe in love, but not monogamy,' he says plainly.
And this isn't a made up troll bullshit either! He actually stated this tripe, which makes it obvious that he is trying to politely say that he's a flaming homo slut!
Speaking about 'flaming,' who better to point out as a filthy chutney ferret than Slashdot's very own self-confessed pederast Jon Katz. Although an obvious deviant anagram cannot be found from his name, he has already confessed, nay boasted of the homosexual perversion of corrupting the innocence of young children. To quote from the article linked:
'I've got a rare kidney disease,' I told her. 'I have to go to the bathroom a lot. You can come with me if you want, but it takes a while. Is that okay with you? Do you want a note from my doctor?'
Is this why you were touching your penis in the cinema, Jon? And letting the other boys touch it too?
We should also point out that Jon Katz refers to himself as 'Slashdot's resident Gasbag.' Is there any more doubt? For those fortunate few who aren't aware of the list of homosexual terminology found inside the Linux 'Sauce Code,' a 'Gasbag' is a pervert who gains sexual gratification from having a thin straw inserted into his urethra (or to use the common parlance, 'piss-pipe'), then his homosexual lover blows firmly down the straw to inflate his scrotum. This is, of course, when he's not busy violating the dignity and c

Re:Fix Slashcode
Re:What trend?
Steps for ignorant assholes that have a faint grasp on theory and zero on facts, yet like to insult others:
1. Download a popular encoder/decoder such as handbrake http://handbrake.fr/
2. Download a popular hardware monitor that does real time monitoring of various parts of your system, such as openhardwaremonitor http://openhardwaremonitor.org/
3. Download process explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
4. Get any h.264 movie. You can rip one from youtube.
5. Re-encode the video into any other popular standard, ranging from h.264 to divx. Pay attention to usage. Use openhardwaremonitor for specific CPU/GPU load monitoring and process explorer for memory footprint.
Optional if you have a decent system:
1. Go into your bios. Slow your memory/FSB down as much as you can. Overclock CPU to get same speed on the slower FSB.
2. Restart the system, try re-encoding with exact same settings.
3. Observe your own ignorance as your performance take little impact.
Optional 2: Attempt to do the same in opposite direction, or even insert faster RAM into the system. Note how your performance tanks hard in direct relation to CPU in this case.Do you know why? Because most encoder/decoder software is optimized properly and doesn't need a huge memory footprint. I like watching anime fluff on the go on my phone, so I routinely re-encode h.264 720p and 1080p video into 360p divx that my phone can run for a long while without killing the battery (it's old enough to lack proper h.264 support). As I have to re-encode routinely, I've done some actual research on how to make the process as speedy as possible. As a result, I ended up buying fastest i5 on the market that was available and essentially slowest memory it would take. Because the main things that need performance that I do are gaming and video encoding. And both are CPU and GPU bound and memory throughput is largely irrelevant as long as its "fast enough not to bottleneck the system" because of it. Criteria which the slowest available memory at the point of buying the CPU met with plenty to spare.
As for your hilarious claims in relation to the original topic of OS "memory optimizations", issue is that data portion that needs high throughput of memory when decoding/encoding is direct and largely uncacheable, meaning that OS optimizations have little to no impact and is mainly dependent on hardware. That's because it contains the actual video. And in most cases, unless you're encoding in fast GPU hardware while using slow system RAM, you'll be bottlenecked by computing power rather then by memory throughput - which is essentially always true on modern PC architechture. And even if you were limited by memory throughput, there is little to nothing that OS optimizations can do to alleviate the problem, as video encoding is largely not cacheable. It needs actual brutal throughput. Memory management in such tasks is typically best left to the application doing the decode/encode anyway as it will handle the specialized stuff much better then generalist optimizations done by the OS.
Now if you excuse me, I need to go back to "surfing for porn". Your remark reminded me that I haven't surfed for porn in years, a revelation that I found surprisingly disturbing.

Kodu
You might want to look at Kodu. There are plenty of reasons to hate on it, but it's a visual programming language aimed at making games.

Re:You know...
No, they're not. Perhaps because they have a ton of German contacts available for German customers, which actually answer (and that is what this is all about) support requests. From what I've read, that's what Google currently doesn't do.

Eleventh client needs a server
If you have at least 11 Windows PCs in your organization, you can't install MSE on more than ten of them. For that, it appears you need to upgrade to a Windows Server running System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection.
-
The eleventh PC
OTOH, MSE doesn't constantly annoy, slow your PC to a crawl or constantly ask for credit card details just to keep on running.
Unless you try to install it on an eleventh PC in an organization. Organizations with at least 11 PCs running Windows are expected to buy a Windows Server and then buy Microsoft System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection (formerly Forefront), which appears to cost $1,323 per server per 24-month period plus $22 per client per 24-month period.

Re:Microsoft Security Essentials...
Yeah, you keep readinig those glowing reviews for products that brick Windows.
You mean products like Microsoft Update?
"April 18, 2013, Microsoft is investigating behavior where systems may not recover from a restart, or applications cannot load, after security update 2823324 is applied. We recommend that customers uninstall this update."
-
Re:Microsoft Security Essentials...
Never mind MSE - which is only on a subset of Windows computers.
Microsoft have recommended uninstalling a core Windows 7 patch in the last week or so: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2839011
Face it, anything that involves changing how a computer operates - regardless of whether the process for making those changes is automated or manual - introduces risk. You just have to decide how big the risk is, weighed against the alternative.

Re:What numbers?
Hint: when you turn a technical correction into a personal attack, you're being an asshole. Normally I just ignore assholes on Slashdot, but since you seem to be a reasonable poster most of the time I'll address the minor point you raise.
The issue was never whether I could get a system up and running once. It's about companies who feel they can arbitrarily alter their products after purchase, such that you have to just eat whatever shit they throw at you.
Yes, there have been a variety of ways to get a running copy of Windows that require less activation hassle. I know a few versions of the activation rules that have applied over time, how to get around some of them, and how to avoid the WGA notifier client. And, yes, the activation rules for XP Pro have been reasonable at some points in time. But I assumed from XP release day that Microsoft would eventually tighten them and break some systems that were functional, under the banner of anti-piracy. And that's exactly what happened in 2006 when KB905474 was pushed as a critical update.
The exact terms and enforcement for what makes a copy of Windows "Genuine" haven't been stable, and that was the first such major change to them. Microsoft still regularly rolls out updates to the WGA validation that change the rules. The latest text on that Wikipedia page even alludes to a recent "WGA update for Windows XP Professional" that alters how that OS is treated. You just quoted some activation rule of thumb at me. But did you check an XP Pro system today? Yesterday might have been a Patch Tuesday that grabbed new WGA code you know.
If you're fine with a Microsoft system pulling down updates that can alter if your OS is functional, ones that have the very real risk of deactivating it, good for you. I didn't care whether I could activate a system or not at a given point in time. The fact that a later update might deactivate one, via rules I could not predict, that was the thing that was unacceptable. When a software company issues a security update, it's a fix to a product that was sold with a defect. It's not an invitation to install extra crap or to disable features arbitrarily on my computer. It was bullshit when Microsoft does it, it was bullshit when Sony pulled Linux support on the PS3, and it's still bullshit now.

Re:remote desktop vs windows
I haven't tried it with FreeRDP, but Microsoft's version of RDP supports something called "RemoteApp" which lets you run individual programs with network transparency. Some googling turns up what looks to be a FreeRDP version of that.
That is encouraging, but from your link and from this one, it still seems like a hack - i.e., it's not transparent. You have to jump through hoops evidently. The beauty of X11 is the network transparency. If I've got an ssh open to a remote host, all X11 apps I run on that connection on the remote host automatically appear on my own desktop without any special treatment at all.
It might grow, but there is no assurance that it will; not really even any indication.
-
Re:remote desktop vs windows
I can't answer for Wayland, but on Windows you just type "mstsc" and provide whatever options you want (typically mstsc
/v:remotehost)Once connected and logged in, you get your remote desktop (or app, as some people have said you can access just an app remotely) and you can do whatever you want as if you're running the remote computer locally.
I imagine Wayland client will be of similar complexity, especially if its a compatible protocol.

10 LET M$ = "Microsoft"
Some people claim that "M$" is childish. But stories like this are why I still use the abbreviation to fit under the 50-character limit of comment subjects. M$ unambiguously means Microsoft, recalling its beginning as a publisher of line-numbered BASIC interpreters for 8- and 16-bit microcomputers where string variable names ended with $.
On the one hand, the similarity of the names is a joke. On the other hand, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society did call Microsoft corporation of the year in 1999.

Re:It's worse than that
New protocols? A low-level protocol like like a PGM or ICMP? No, the RT sockets don't let you do that (among other things, there's hardly any value: even if you made a new low--level protocol, you'd have trouble getting internet-scale adoption (heck, even useful things like PGM have trouble, and we're never getting another ICMP again).
RT Sockets are a wrapper over WinSock (aka, Windows version of BSD sockets), but with some stuff cut out and object-orient-ified.

Visual Studio
I've personally fallen in love with Visual Studio. It's definitely the planets most feature-rich and capable IDE. It supports wide array of languages, has great debugging options and performs really well. The best thing is that Visual Studio Express is completely free.
It's also great to see Microsoft Research's latest offerings. They have always been the monolith research club of the industry. It's nice to see that Microsoft is really dedicated to support research.
That being said, I'm quite sure we will see the fruits of this research in an even better Visual Studio based product. Microsoft really cares about programmers and developers and helps all of them write efficient and clean code. Helping the debugging process is just second part of it.
I would, however, also love to see better support for debuggers like OllyDbg. It's basically assembler level debugger for programs that have been already compiled. It's binary code analysis is unmatched in the industry. Compiling these two will lead to synergies.
All in all, Microsoft Visual Studio keeps getting better! -
Re:Your kid, spending your money . . .
Why does your kid need a IPad or a IPhone? Why not buy him a computer with an OS which does not have app stores.
You did say BUY a computer but there's little sale outside these top prebundled OSs:
Ubuntu App store
MacOS X App store
Windows 8 App storeIt won't be easy finding legal Windows 7 copy without online merchants so that you can live App-free on your new computer.
Unless you plan to build your own PC and put non-Ubuntu FOSS on it, other choices call for wading into uncanny territory or buying older unsold items and used stuff
That said, I don't promote the idea of purchasing a tablet or phones for kids. There's already a living room PC and a laptop sitting around at home and kids do NOT need more room to hide their acts.

Re:Reason number one.
I set up performance logging and came back 2 weeks later to see, what did I find? 45%.
... I thought "Well yeah, its a quad, surely that older dual core i built for the shop has to be ready for the pasture"...nope, biggest spikes around 70% but only when he is loading something up and after that its nothing, 20s and 30s during background tasks. So it all comes down to one simple fact...The MHz war was a bubble.
Or, maybe, your father is a relatively undemanding computer user.
It has always been the case that some people just do not stress their computers, so they are happy with what they have. Back in the 1980s, Jean-Louis Gassée bought the Apple engineers a high-end Cray supercomputer to design the next Mac, but Seymour Cray bought a Mac to design his next Cray supercomputer.
I would argue what we are seeing now is NOT "The death of the PC" anymore than the housing bubble popping meant the death of houses, its just a return to a more normal state. before laptops were getting replaced every other year and desktops around every 3
That's not what I remember. It's a major point in Cringely's book, Accidental Empires, that the PC industry comes out with new systems every 18 months. Back then, even ordinary software was so close to the limits of the hardware that we needed new hardware to run new software at acceptable speeds. This era, when basic software runs at acceptable speeds on old computers, is new.
I think the major new frontier is in responsiveness. When you're doing those measurements, with the CPU usage at 40%, how many times was the CPU usage so low because it was waiting for the hard drive? IMHO, people should not ever wait for computers, and as long as they do, then computers are not fast enough. SSDs should replace hard drives. Even without an SSD, I recently set up a Sandy Bridge i7 system, and it was so much faster at booting up and UI responsiveness than any Core 2 system that I've encountered. We should continue to upgrade, if for no other reason, then to wait less on our computers.
-
Re:It's worse than that
Typically I think computers don't fall behind, instead the applications have become more demanding. The applications aren't necessarily better but they do want more RAM or more CPU, often deciding that they want to load into memory and stay there before you even use them, just so that you get the instant-start when you do click the icon.
Yep, periodically I have to use AUTORUNS and stomp that stuff out. There is no earthly reason why a program that I run once every month or so should be constantly eating any RAM or CPU. I can live with it taking 20s more to start once a month, but I don't want it to be adding that 20s to every boot sequence.

Do a little research.
If memory serves this was also linked in the related article above. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee663275.aspx
DirectX is just becoming part of the Windows 8 SDK. Then presumably the Windows 9, etc, SDKs as well. On until death. -
That is a filthy lie
There will be a DirectX 12 just in time for Windows 9. Don't believe me? There's a great page up on MSDN that confirms DirectX is now a part of new releases of the Windows SDK starting with Win8.
As it stands this is confirmation from the GPU manufacturer that the new Xbox will not be using anything better than DX11, and that people using toasters with XP are finally getting cut loose. It's good news for gamers, too: you won't have to upgrade your DX11-compatible video card for DX11.1 or purchase future versions of Windows for DirectX support for at least another decade. We're witnessing the next generation of console games disappoint before they've even been written.

Re:GFD microsoft!
It certainly seems to happen more often than one a week. The wife of a guy I work with leaves her Window laptop in sleep mode at night and it will wake up on its own at 3AM to update, flooding the bedroom with light from the screen. I suppose that feature is this one http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979878. Fun with Windows.

Re:One driver eh?
The original knowledge base article which is linked to the fix contains the kernel mode drivers. It makes sense in the context of the linked articles, so the fault with the confusion lies with threatpost.com for not providing all the relevant information.
This link is the knowledge base article in question:
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2829996The kernel mode drivers are: ntfs.sys and win32k.sys.
I guess that's what happens when you use a summary of a bugfix to write an article.

Running NTFS.SYS version 6.1.7601.18106
Just fine here, oddly enough, no problems on reboots etc./et al here @ all, whatsoever, on Windows 7 64-bit...
* Upon manually installing my updates for this past "Patch Tuesday" here, 1 was "rejected" as "does not apply to your operating system version" (something very along those lines was the specific err message/abend)!
(Thus, fact is, I'd wager possibly that THAT was the very one that didn't install here (luckily enough I guess)).
I.E.-> No failure to reboot properly etc. here @ all, whatsoever, with THAT particular NTFS.SYS file version in place...
APK
P.S.=> The article from Microsoft states these facts as to proper version numbers for Windows 7 64-bit near as I am able to tell from reading there cursorily @ this point @ least:
FROM -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2823324?wa=wsignin1.0
Ntfs.sys
6.1.7601.18106
1,655,656
02-Mar-2013
06:04
x64& the NTFS.SYS filesystem driver version reported here by rightclicking on the NTFS.SYS file (under %Windir%\system32\drivers) says the exact same... & just judging by that date, I never got the "updated" (downdated really) version to install, per what I noted above about 1 hotfix NOT installing here!

Re:Here's how to uninstall it..
The command in americamatrix’s post is intended for use after you’ve install the windows update(s), but before you’ve rebooted your system to fully apply them. It may also work after rebooting if the update doesn’t prevent a successful reboot, but does cause other problems (e.g. causing Kapersky to lose its license). It’s basically the same thing as using the Programs Control Panel “View Install Updates” feature to uninstall it.
Also, I’d recommend leaving off the “/quiet” flag so that you get some comforting feedback that it has actually worked. So: “wusa
/uninstall /kb:2823324 /norestart” (no need for “.exe” either, of course). If you’ve already rebooted your system and now cannot get into it because of the update (symptoms may include a false indication of file system corruption on a hard drive [Event ID 55], STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} status 0xC000003a, or “Windows failed to start Status: 0xc000000e”), there are other ways to remove it, involving either using System Restore or Boot to Command Prompt and issuing a command.
Full details at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2839011
Note that this update is apparently only applied to systems running Windows 7 pre-SP1 or SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 pre-SP1 or SP1, or Windows Server 2008 non-R2 SP2 (any edition of any of these). If you’re running Windows XP, Vista, or 8, presumably this won’t be an issue as the update would never even have been offered via Windows Update.

Re: My theory
Well, just like XP brought standardized WiFi settings (I despised the hell that was Win2k WiFi, where every vendor had their own proprietary UI), Win7 brings things like better search (especially for programs in the start menu), SSD TRIM support, better security features, and 64bit.
Umm...no. Sorry, have to disagree with you there.
The search on Windows 7 was a huge step backwards for users who actually, you know, have an idea of what they're looking for but can't *quite* remember where it is. The clear and intuitive search interface of Windows XP (once you got rid of that annoying little dog) was replaced with...a text entry box. Filtering searches now involves trying to remember some byzantine, arbitrary keywords system instead of simply checking off a list of checkboxes or radio buttons and using some (almost) universally-known wildcards (*, ?).
Want to quickly switch between searching for filenames-only or filenames-plus-contents? No quick way to do this, sorry, you have to go into the folder properties, and even then you can't disable content searching for indexed locations (and don't even get me started on how the frigging indexing hogs my system resources...). It's also slow as a spavined mule, even in supposedly indexed locations, and even when you do (finally) have a results list, selecting to sort on a different column order resets and resubmits the entire frigging search!. Oh yeah, and sometimes it won't even find the file at all, even if I know it's in there. Doesn't seem to matter if it's indexed or not, I'll wait five minutes for it to show me a list of crap files that happen to have my search term somewhere in their metadata or contents, but not the one that has the search term in the actual filename...you know, the one I was actually looking for in the first place.
No. The search on Win7 is not better, it's an order of magnitude worse than on XP. For those who feel the same, FileSearchEX is worth the cost. I got it on sale for $10 a while back, but even at $20, I'd consider it worthwhile.

Re:Like a refrigerator
what if there was a laptop shell (keyboard and screen) that I could plug my phone into?
You still would have one big problem. The applications you are using require responsive touch and don't scale up effectively to larger screen sizes. Now imagine they were designed to work with different form factors so that even this problem went away, that the application UI shifted as you changed form factor of devices.
