The SIGIO comparison is somewhat fair, but keep in mind that implementing a program with SIGIO requires multiplexing I/O asynchronously, which radically alters program design. Linux 2.4 lacks a synchronous, stateful interface for I/O mulitplexing. Programs that implement synchronous I/O multiplexing can easily transition to a library for their main loop to immediately take advantage of high performance multiplexing/events mechanisms. The 'cutter' program introduced in the article sounds suspiciously similar to Dug Song's tcpkill program (a member of his dsniff network utilities). In fact, tcpkill appears to be superior because it matches packets via tcpdump expressions, and hence is more versatile.

downloaded Ethereal, a packet sniffer, and it has built in filters for extracting AIM messages out of the packets AIM sends. And in an environment such as a college dorm where there might be plenty of people connected via hubs (i.e. anyone on the hub can snoop everyone else's packets), this is a good thing to have... not that I would know anything about that...

Also, your first link, to "google.com", doesn't work. This corrected link works, but it doesn't support your claim of "that whole crashing thing" -- the reviewer only had YDL crash on him once, due to its energy-saving behavior on laptops. I can't check your other 2 links to see whether they add more evidence of laptop crashing, since neither of the sites resolve (in Mozilla 1.1).

In any case, the tone of the first review is generally positive; he ends by saying "[YDL] is still the best Linux distro for the Mac I have come across to date, and I'll certainly be keeping it around, and tracking upgrades with interest."

Chapter 1 opens with four paragraphs of pure backstory. There is little need to read much further. Even if the author has good ideas, he doesn't bother to present them with any artistry. I don't want to read his notes and outlines; I thought this was supposed to be a novel.

You were locked out of access to computers and the internet for a long time (internet time anyways) after doing things you agree were wrong. You are now working on a consulting business to utilize your hard learned knowledge in a productive manner. You seem to have been 'reformed' by the prison/legal system. In the meanwhile, I suggest that you run all your untrusted software in a sandbox like Systrace which is available for the BSDs and Linux.

This screenshot shows Dug Song detecting the trojan in the Fragroute distribution. Systrace allows you to run completely untrusted applications in a sandbox. The security policy is created on the fly with the user deciding what an application is allowed to do.

We need to be much more careful about the software that we run.

Sure, it's better than nothing, but Dug Song's work on Dsniff (and the resulting controversy) clearly revealed that SSH is not a panacea to sniffing and/or session hijacking. In fact, with a compromised network host doing ARP spoofing it's probably nowhere near as secure as you think, especially if the clients and servers aren't set up with appropriate configurations. (i.e. only allow SSH2, don't allow log in as root, perhaps even use skey if necessary, etc.

Also, if you use Windows, don't let WinSCP save your password in the registry. (as it tends to want to do so by default). WinSCP (and perhaps PuTTY?) also saves copies (unencrypted!) of any files you transfer in plain sight, right in your Windows temp folder! argh!)

I'm not saying it's futile - SSH is a good step in the right direction, obviously miles ahead of Telnet or FTP, but it's not the cure-all some people seem to think it is. So, you might want to think twice about how "secure" your little SSH session is before bragging about it on /.

Otherwise, you're just drawing attention to yourself. (shh! the feds might hear us. ;-)

I don't necessarily trust CVS for accuracy, but "cvs.openbsd.org" is not the only reference copy of the OpenBSD sources. "Inserting root holes in OpenBSD kernel" is like inserting holes in the old testament of the bible... you can change one copy at one site, but people are going to notice and figure out when/what was changed in short order.
