I also looked at the license, looks OK. Maybe it's a practical matter, that with the old license you don't have to do anything. But with the new license you have to remember to say "This product includes..." blaa. I think this practice is already a problem, see for example this blaa blaa blaa. Since NetBSD also does that blaa, I don't think they mind XFree86 doing that too... I totally understand all projects rejecting new license, since they can spend less time on blaa blaa blaa.

As for your falacies regarding freedom and the BSD and GPL licenses, those have been dealt with thoroughly before, except to say that your attitude works well for a small project, but for a large project (especially a large, self-contained project like a whole OS), the GPL offers you the developer more freedom and protection from greedy folks than the BSD would.

Well, a small nitpick but there are large self-contained projects written under mainly the BSD license. The three examples are actually complete operating systems.
Sure companies use the code for their own products (You wouldn't believe how many hardware appliances are BSD based) but is that actually bad? I mean would you rather have all those appliances writing their own TCP/IP stack which will have lots of bugs and therefore make for shitty firewalls/routers/whatevers which companies will use anyway because it has such a pretty windows client or whatever, this will fuck up parts of the net imho.
I code under BSD myself because it makes for less stress for myself and for others. If you BSD license your code that version will allways remain open for other people to use, and thats what you want with open sourcing your app right? That people actually use it?

IMHO writing under the gpl makes it less fun to code for me because then I'd have to worry about other people using my code in a way the GPL's writers didn't intend.
GPL is fun to write an open source competitor to closed source in but I think standards will originate in BSD because if its in BSD, everybody can use it. This is one of the factors in how TCP/IP became the standard on the internet.

As for libraries compiled with a different C compiler than you're using to link with, that's a common problem between gcc and vendor UNIX C compilers. However, the vendor C compiler suites shouldn't be disregarded as they offer many advantages over gcc (take a look at some of the Solaris bugs in gcc and gdb.)

However, if you want something like /usr/ports on Solaris, check out pkgsrc. It's NetBSD's ports collection, and it has been ported to Solaris 8 and 9.

Not all versions of OpenFirmware can read ELF or hfs/hfs+ at all.The NetBSD install docs sum it up pretty well. Though that anchor doesn't mention that OF 1.x, 2.0x and 2.1x cannot boot ELF.

I assume by "not direct" you mean not booting mac OS first, and then using BootX. Only machines without OpenFirmware or that have really broken ROMs would need to do that.

OpenFirmware is a bit more than just a boot loader, lets give Apple and SUN a little more credit.

It is possible to remotely crash openbsd 3.4 if the host receives icmpv6
and there is a listening tcp port.

After switching to Linux six years ago and spending a lot of time trying to navigate Gnome's menus to find what I was looking, a friend told me about WindowMaker. I edit the menus to weed out the cruft, include things that take a lot of keystrokes to launch, and open terminals to do my other work. If I need something that I didn't put in a menu, I have a command prompt to launch it. No muss, no fuss. This, of course requires a real OS.

As for encrypted /home, take a look at NetBSD's cryptographic disk driver. I use it on my IBM T30 to encrypt /home and swap. Neato.

Considering the issues surrounding the proposed replacement of the NetBSD image, I find it very ironic that the first image showing up in a Google Image Search for NetBSD.gif was in fact the homepage of the Japan NetBSD Users' Group.

I don't know, if I was Japanese, I'd probably be offended. A lot of American soldiers killed a lot of Japanese. When it was all over there were only 250 Japanese prisoners out of the original 22,000 defenders of the island. The rest were killed. General Kuribayashi commited suicide (hari kari). The Marines lost 7,000 killed and 19,000 wounded. International conflict is not comfortable thing to talk about, and not a good idea for a world-wide logo.

Also, have you ever heard the fates of these soldiers in that famous photo? Three of the men were killed in combat within days of the flag raising. Not exactly inspiring for a logo, either.

Cross, probably. Turban? A lot of cultures have turbans. What's wrong with a turban? Keeps your hair up, head shaded from the sun, is a symbol of wisdom, and a cool place to store your cobra...! No, wait, skip the last one.

The current logo isn't just the devil, it's a picture of several devils lifting up a pitch-fork in a style like the Iwo Jima memorial. Jeez, I wonder why some people would find that offensive? Besides, it is too complicated to reproduce (all that shading) and has no color. The computers they are standing on look ugly, too.

It's not the "normal" BSD devil logo (the one one used on BSD stories on Slashdot) we are talking about, but the NetBSD logo. That logo contains a refference/connection to the Iwo Jima picture.

Beastie, although he is really a BSD thing in general, is most associated with FreeBSD.

nope. this one looks like this. it makes sense to me that they'd want to change the logo. i'm quite a fan of it, it's pretty funny and fun, but, the new logo might be even better! just hope someone is creative.
