Re:Network Solutions and one-letter domains
From what I gather, if they don't have access to the Network Solutions account that the domain name is connected to, they also can't look it up using Network Solutions' domain search (http://www.networksolutions.com/domain-name-registration/index.jsp) because it doesn't allow less than three letters in a domain name. So they can't buy more time by paying for the renewal from outside...
That's for looking up new names.
try https://www.networksolutions.c... instead. It has no trouble finding x.org. -
Re:Easiest way to do this.
Am I the only one who finds it funny as hell that the only ones praising Windows 10 are Apple guys while all the Windows and Linux guys think its trash? Why do you think that is?
I have my own personal theory, its that Apple guys are so used to being wallet raped by Apple that ONLY having to give up their privacy? Sheeeit, that is better than paying out the ass for Apple RAM, Apple NAND, paying current gen prices for last gen's Intel chips, etc. Compared to that level of wallet drain just letting corporate spy on them like an old pervert must feel like a breath of fresh air!
Of course it may be that they simply haven't tried the niceness that is Windows 7, the last truly good and decent OS it appears that MSFT will ever make. No spying, no crappstore, no worthless Metro crapps that spend more time crashing or phoning home than they actual do their intended function, nope just a nice simple clean OS that does what you tell it to and nothing else...aaaahhhh, like a little slice of heaven it is.
Oh and just an FYI, if you think those privacy settings will stop MSFT from spying on you and selling your data to anybody with a dollar? Well guess again, in fact somebody did a traffic analysis of Windows 10 and you want to guess who one of the very first recipients of your data is? Well we do a WHOIS of nsatc.net and wadda ya know, its markmonitor the copyright trolls! So yes Virginia the old saying is true, if you aren't paying for the product? Then you ARE the product.

Re:Renewing the domain name? No
You can renew for 10 years, and some registers will allow you to leave a credit in the account and set auto-renew. That should last until the register business goes tits-up at least.
10 years? Bah... Network solutions offers 100 years: http://www.networksolutions.co...
Now whether they'll be around that long is a completely different question.
-
Re:Renewing the domain name? No
How would the domain be renewed if the estate cancels the credit cards?
Why renew? Just prepay for 100 years: http://www.networksolutions.co...

Yeah, but if you register with them for 100 years, their prices are only $9.99 per year.

Re:Black hole?
Unless you transfer it. They renew it yearly 100 times, they don't give you a 100-year registration period. They also have "domain protection" for $9.99/domain/year. For that price, you could just register the domain for two years. https://www.networksolutions.c...

Re:Black hole?
Network Solutions offers kinda-sorta-100 year registration. Technically it's just a ten year registration that they automatically renew for you every ten years, but it still would've saved Sony a lot of trouble in this case.
20 and 100 Year Domain Registration Service - If the domain name registry of a particular third level domain does not provide for an initial registration term of 20 or 100 years, then Network Solutions will register your domain name on your behalf for the maximum term available at the respective registry, and as long as your domain name is registered with us, we will continue to add additional years to your registration on an annual basis up to the total of 20 or 100 years, depending upon the term you select from the date of purchase.

Re:Did he misread the email?Confirmed: Brent didn't misread the email. The latest post regarding Web Lock on Network Solutions' blog says,
Any customers who may happen to enroll, who do not recognize value, or do not wish to take advantage of this new security, will continue to be allowed to opt out of the program. More importantly, as one of the world’s largest domain registrars and global Internet leaders, we believe that we have a responsibility to “push” our customers—to help inform, educate, and protect them against would-be threats. [emphasis mine]
Could someone please explain how anyone could "happen" to enroll? At least they "allow" opt out. How wonderfully generous.

Re:I can't find this feature
I googled network solutions "weblock" and got their service agreement which refers to a service by that name.
From the ToS:
Although WebLock shall provide for additional domain protection, you acknowledge and agree that the Service is not a guarantee or policy of insurance of any kind, and in no way will the use of or enrollment in the WebLock Service diminish or otherwise alter the other sections of this Agreement, including but not limited to, Section 7 (Exclusive Remedy) and Section 8 (Disclaimers of Warranties) above, which shall continue in full force and effect.
Can't be the only one here wondering...For $1850, just exactly what in the fuck are you getting then...

Re:Has she been outed yet?
Hm, that's the 2nd best convincing possibility I'm aware of. Everyone else either never had a DOB listed in IMDb, has publicly stated their true age somewhere at some point, etc.
Bai Ling. The IMDb DOB change matches up with the timeline. And the website being hosted in TX would fit, except that hardly proves anything since it's done over the internet anyway. The physical host could be anywhere. In fact, the contact info for the domain bai-ling.org is listed in la Rioja, Spain. Although, as you said, not an obviously anglicized name. However, truth be told I don't think she pulls off the youthful look as well as she wishes she could. She looks old. At least old enough that it'd be just as easy for her to pull off a 40-year-old part if she wanted to.
Junie Hoang. The "-ie" is obviously an anglicization, so that fits well enough. Her birthdate was also changed in IMDb somewhere around the dates known from the lawsuit. Her Facebook and website's contact info list her residence in LA, but her voicemail is in Texas and the contact info for her website's domain, juniehoang.com, is in Ft. Worth, TX. Furthermore, she could have been fibbing a bit when the lawsuit said she lives in Texas, in reality spending most of her time in LA. She's from Texas, anyway, and she probably has someone back home whose address she can use on the papers even though she doesn't really live there anymore. And lastly, I'd say she looks a lot younger than Bai Ling.
I'd say either has their pros and cons that would or wouldn't support their being the Jane Doe in this lawsuit, but I think Junie Hoang still has my bet.
I do think it's amusing, though, that the publicity over this seems to be backfiring and hitting numerous actresses who've tried unsuccessfully to hide their real age, not just the one who filed the suit.

It's ironic that you cite co2science.org after raising doubts about using Wikipedia as a source. First, co2science evidently wants to hide who's behind them:

Re:Network Solutions as Judge, Jury, and Execution
Maybe you haven't looked at their site lately (I wouldn't blame you); NetSol has been providing hosting for years: http://www.networksolutions.com/web-hosting/index.jsp
That is true, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the website is also hosted at NetSol. There are plenty of people who (are stupid enough to) use NetSol as a domain registrar, paying their ridiculous fees and then host the site on another provider.

True, but the GP's fundamental point is still valid:
The DCMA required only the contested content be removed in any case. Network Solutions removing access to [the] entire web site is very troubling. And it may even have opened them up to a lawsuit themselves.
[Emphasis mine]
They've actually made the domain unavailable, which is more troubling, because it means that email and other services will fail, too. Regardless, NetSol is out of line.

Blame Microsoft
Not exactly a well researched or even factual story this, even for
/.
A quick check of the domain registry shows that the site isn't owned by either Microsoft or Asus. In fact it appears to be some kind of ad agency, probably hired to increase sales of Asus equipment for a third party.
Don't let me stop the conspiracy theories though. I suppose the site is badly designed, looks awful and doesn't actually do anything useful deliberately? Perhaps to instil doubt as to whether such a large and evil corporation would actually publish a web page as crap as this? Microsoft do a lot of stupid crap but I don't think you can blame this on them. I'm sure plenty will continue to do so though. -

Network Solutions started with Pidgin for internal chat and a chatroom, then moved to Spark.
Meets all your requirements: does not support outside protocols such as AIM, MSN, Yahoo, runs on XP, scalable and free.
Best thing about it was that it saved the chatroom conversation for the last few hours, so you could login and see what was discussed earlier that day. -

e-Gold...teh new flooze?
*sigh* Why oh WHY was this blatant shit posted by timothy? His comments are - at best - a string of facile observations.
On top of that, I think most of you are aware of the controversy surrounding regular Slashdot article submitter D Ninja (aka Roland Piquepaille).
For those of you who don't know, please allow me to bring forth all the facts. Roland Piquepaille has an online journal (I refuse to use the word "blog") located at www.primidi.com. It is titled "Roland Piquepaille's Technology Trends". It consists almost entirely of content, both text and pictures, taken from reputable news websites and online technical journals. He does give credit to the other websites, but it wasn't always so. Only after many complaints were raised by the Slashdot readership did he start giving credit where credit was due. However, this is not what the controversy is about.
Roland Piquepaille's Technology Trends serves online advertisements through a service called Blogads, located at www.blogads.com. Blogads is not your traditional online advertiser; rather than base payments on click-throughs, Blogads pays a flat fee based on the level of traffic your online journal generates. This way Blogads can guarantee that an advertisement on a particular online journal will reach a particular number of users. So advertisements on high traffic online journals are appropriately more expensive to buy, but the advertisement is guaranteed to be seen by a large amount of people. This, in turn, encourages people like Roland Piquepaille to try their best to increase traffic to their journals in order to increase the going rates for advertisements on their web pages. But advertisers do have some flexibility. Blogads serves two classes of advertisements. The premium ad space that is seen at the top of the web page by all viewers is reserved for "Special Advertisers"; it holds only one advertisement. The secondary ad space is located near the bottom half of the page, so that the user must scroll down the window to see it. This space can contain up to four advertisements and is reserved for regular advertisers, or just "Advertisers". Visit Roland Piquepaille's Technology Trends (www.primidi.com) to see it for yourself.
Before we talk about money, let's talk about the service that Roland Piquepaille provides in his journal. He goes out and looks for interesting articles about new and emerging technologies. He provides a very brief overview of the articles, then copies a few choice paragraphs and the occasional picture from each article and puts them up on his web page. Finally, he adds a minimal amount of original content between the copied-and-pasted text in an effort to make the journal entry coherent and appear to add value to the original articles. Nothing more, nothing less.
Now let's talk about money. Visit http://www.blogads.com/order_html?adstrip_category =tech&politics= to check the following facts for yourself. As of today, December XX 2004, the going rate for the premium advertisement space on Roland Piquepaille's Technology Trends is $375 for one month. One of the four standard advertisements costs $150 for one month. So, the maximum advertising space brings in $375 x 1 + $150 x 4 = $975 for one month. Obviously not all $975 will go directly to Roland Piquepaille, as Blogads gets a portion of that as a service fee, but he will receive the majority of it. According to the FAQ [blogads.com], Blogads takes 20%. So Roland Piquepaille gets 80% of $975, a maximum of $780 each month. www.primidi.com is hosted by clara.net (look it up at http://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/whois/index. jhtml). Browsing clara.net's hosting solutions, the most expensive hosting service is their Clarahost Advanced (http://www.uk.clara.net/clarahost/advanced.php [clara.net]) priced at £69.99 GBP. This is roughly, at the time of this writing, $130 USD. Assuming Roland Piquepaille pays for the

Contact Yahoo!
You need to contact Yahoo! about correcting the old data they have about this IP address because I think Yahoo! may use their own whois data a. Ehh! You should check several third party systems to check if whois data has propagated to all of servers in the world properly. You can use these websites to check:
http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp
http://www.internic.net/whois.html
http://uwhois.com/
http://www.whois.net/
If you see one that is out of sync then you need to contact that registry server/db owner and tell them to update that data.
I remember I updated my whois data for my company several months ago and occasionally I find a backwater server that still has the old whois information and depending who they are I'll contact them to update their server/db. -

i'm not a big fan of them doing this, but the '59k word user agreement' is a little disingenuous. in fact, it's extremely unlikely that the entire 59k (58,521, actually) would apply to anyone. You'd have to subscribe to every service they offer, and register domains in

Here's how you you attack an infrastructure without all that "high tech" bullshit
Prerequisite: Coordinate with lots of people (using /. is acceptable)
try {
1) Find out the customer support number.
2) Set aside a couple of hours, get comfortable with a phone and a good book (or in front of the TV).
3) Dial the number in step #1
4) Read the book (or watch TV) while on hold.
5) When you get a person, ask their full name, then keep them on the line for a while complaining about the issue.
6) Ask to be transferred to a supervisor. Insist on it. Be polite but firm. Use phrases like "I am sorry but this is just not acceptable" and "Mr/Ms $full_name, are you refusing my legitimate request to escalate the issue?". Do not let the algorithm terminate at this point.
7) Repeat step #4 while on hold for supervisor.
8) When you get the next person, get their full name, then complain to them. Keep complaining even if they promise a solution. Keep them on the line as long as possible. Try to not let the algorithm terminate at this point.
9) Every once in a while inquire about the possibility of escalating your call even higher.
10) If they agree to escalate, repeat from step #7.
} catch {
10) If you were cut off, call again to complain about $full_name being rude to you and hanging up on you. Use the same tactics to waste their time and "escalate" as high as you can get.
11) If by some fluke you seem to reach somebody in the corporate structure, engage them in *polite* conversation regarding the unethical behavior of their company. Mention that you are typing a letter to your representative / the FCC / the local paper as you speak.
}
12) Repeat from step #1 until it's no longer fun.
13) Post about your experience to several fora, encourage others to play too.
14) Take a break.
15) GOTO #1 (nuts to you, Dijkstra!) -

TIny command to annoy NSI
pwgen 50 10 Have fun pasting that into their checking thing at http://www.networksolutions.com/ - it's a pity you can only 'check' 10 domains at once
:/ If anyone can wrap that into a POST request, please reply here :) Richard -
Has anyone read their "terms of use""

It doesn't seem that they obey their own terms of service if they have a bot set up to register domains whenever they are queried, but then again, I suppose they have no reason to obey them either - it's not as if they will ban themselves from access.
On a side note, they STILL haven't registered nsi_sucks_dogs_balls.com yet. I am a little disappointed, but I am sure that it will be picked up soon.
