Re:About those sanctions...
OK, if that was the case then wouldn't these WMDs have been found by US/UK troops upon inspecting Iraqi troops that they had captured or killed?
This colonel also claims that the WMD is still in hands of fedayeen, and that Saddam deployed secret weapons caches throughout the country to supply resistance fighters after the war. He also said that "Only when Saddam is caught will people talk about these weapons".
But tell me, just how did Iraq pre-invasion pose a threat to US national security?
Do the math:
1) Saddam has used WMD in the past
2) Saddam has large amounts of WMD that were unaccounted for by the UN
3) Saddam says he will use WMD against the US
4) Terrorists say they want to use WMD against the US
5) Terrorists have proven their ability to attack inside the US
How is that not a threat?
Almost as laughable as your statement that "nobody has tried to deny that claim" - why do you think the majority of the world's nations were opposed to the US-led invasion?
Why do you think the UN Security Counsel passed 17 Chapter 7 resolutions condemning Iraq for non-compliance on WMD? The fact that the UN doesn't have the balls to enforce their own resolutions doesn't change anything. -
Podhoretz's Column
In this morning's New York Post, John Podhoretz's column, Cell Hell, gives a good insight of what customers are facing switching from AT&T. I don't think I will be switching from T-Mobile, not because T-Mobile is a great cell phone company, its that all cell phone companies suck. I have learned to with the suckage of T-Mobile and don't want to waste my time relearning the suckage of another. It's really a sad state of affairs in the cell phone provider industry.
-
The reason why...The patent covers "A system and method for circumventing schemes that use duplication detection to detect and block unsolicited e-mail (spam.)", although it's unclear exactly what AT&T want it for.
If they cannot call you to get you to change your long distance service, maybe they are doing to "telemarket" to your inbox. The Federal 'Do Not Call List' is changing the way a lot of traditional telemarketers are doing their business. Since they are now being fined for calling you, they need another way to invade your life and bombard you with offers. Having a technology that can circumvent spam blocking would be a step up on the competition.

Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Comcast to Offer Online Music
2003-11-11 13:10:14 Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Comcast to Offer Online Music (articles, music) (rejected)
Wal-Mart will launch its own digital music download service through its Web site later this month. Not to be outdone, Best Buy will also launch an iTunes-type online music store - with the ability to buy through in-store kiosks - based on the MusicNow service (formerly FullAudio). And today Comcast announced music downloads via Real Rhapsody for its 5 million broadband Internet subscribers. The Washington Post's Cynthia L. Webb writes about the online music frenzy and the resultant advertising onslaught due to the sheer number of entrants into the music download market, while Bloomberg's Holly M. Sanders offers an analysis of Walmart's imminent entry into online music, which is significant since Wal-Mart already controls 14 percent of global CD music sales. More at the New York Times (via SeattlePI).

Re:Fox being one of the four
Your grain of salt for the article:
Fox is one of the four motion picture studios in the MPAA that do not share revenue with a major U.S. record label.
Also beware of the New York Daily News which does not share revenue with a major U.S. record label.
Beware of NY Newsday which does not share revenue with a major U.S. record label.
Beware the New York Post which does not share revenue with a major U.S. record label.
Beware of USA Today which does not share revenue with a major U.S. record label.
Beware of WNBC TV News 4 which does not share revenue with a major U.S. record label.
Beware the Jewish World Review which does not share revenue with a major U.S. record label.
Beware of the California Sacramento Bee which does not share revenue with a major U.S. record label.
According to Gogle News this story is only 12 hours old, expect the list to expand. It is absolutely SHOCKING how many news sorces do not share revenue with a major U.S. record label. SHOCKING I say! This media bias cannot be permitted to continue!

Re:That's a good one
1) He is an American who exiled himself to Britain and then subsequently exiled himself back to the US.
Sounds reasonable. I mean, it's common and rational to move to a different country everytime your (current) government pisses you off.
2) ChoicePoint was commisioned on a high-ball bid by Katherine Harris working on behalf of Jeb Bush. Remember, Katherine Harris was wearing two hats at the time. The first hat was the supreme impartial jurist of Florida election law. The second hat was the Florida campaign head for Jeb Bush's brother. Even a crackpot neo-con couldn't dismiss a conflict of interest without a chuckle. ChoicePoint was paid a FUCKLOAD of money over their $5700 competitor. You would think that someone would get something in return for that. Is it no wonder that the list came up with 50,000 registered voters who WERE NOT convicted of felonies in florida, and virtually all blacks and democrats.
Its amazing how ignorant people can be. Lets go over this again. DBT (which was later bought by ChoicePointe) was comissioned in 1998 to create the voter "purge" list. Jeb Bush was elected in November of 1998 and sworn into office in 1999. Catherine Harris was elected in 2000. I would have thought even you might have picked this up from the Salon.com Corrections. Was it magic? Did they go back in time to hire DBT?
"In the Salon Politics article "Florida's flawed 'voter-cleansing' program," it was incorrectly stated that Florida's Secretary of State Katherine Harris hired a company, ChoicePoint, to create a voter "purge" list. The company was hired in 1998 before Harris was elected to her post.
3) Greg Palast spends a fair amount of time railing against the sins of Bill Clinton and Al Gore. Blind partisans typically stick to throwing stones at the other sides like the metamorphic chameleonic Rush Limbaugh.
Just like a liberal, he spends all his time complaining about what he doesn't like but never offers any useful solution or contribution. And just to let you know (because you obviously wouldn't be listening), Rush Limbaugh has been extreemely critical of George W. Bush, particularly with regard to the amount of money he his spending. -

Heh heh, you know what the really funny part about your comment is?
I pulled This off of Fark earlier today.
*Subscribers & ______ laughing behind a 2-way mirror* -
Re:State law and product warrantiesThanks for the clarification of your political leanings. I am confused about your comments on precedent, though. You write, "Case law better serves situations in Federal and State Court where there is a much greater interest in consitancy." There are only two kinds of courts: state and federal. There is no separate "local" court. Perhaps you're thinking of county or district divisions of state court.
As to the benefit of local judges, you may want to think again. A local judge in the Bronx recently presided over a lawsuit in which a local jury awarded $51 million to Darryl Barnes, who was paralyzed when he drew a TEC-9 on a police officer who fired first. Bronx voters favor judges who dispense Robin Hood justice.
Similarly, local courts have made Mississippi and many other southern states "judicial hellholes" for product liability litigation according to the American Tort Reform Association. The problem here is that the voters in the court's jurisdiction tend to identify with the plaintiff. The corporations sued generally have their factories elsewhere, so it doesn't affect the local voters if jobs dry up. On the other hand, a large award can bring a lot of money to a small county. It is this abuse of discretion by local judges and juries that makes the U.S. Chamber of Commerce call for moving litigation out of local courts and into federal courts while consumer rights groups want to keep litigation in local courts.
As to your comment, "If someone has really done something so wrong that they deserve to pay out 30 billion dollars in punative damages then they should go to jail instead," I would only direct your attention to O.J. Simpson. O.J. did not go to jail (again, your beloved local justice did a fine job with him, as it did with the murderers of Emmett Till) and punitive damages were the most justice he received.
At the same time, the number of liability suits ending in bizarre awards is much smaller than most people think. Just as the press tend to exaggerate spectacular events, such as civilian casualties in Iraq, and make them seem more common than they are, they also exaggerate the frequency of liability blunders (absurd verdicts, excessive awards, etc.) and do not follow up six months later when absurd awards are thrown out on appeal.
Here are some facts, courtesy of the Center for Justice and Democracy and Public Citizen:
- 0.02% of all civil cases handled by the state courts concern product liability.
- The defendants win more than half of these cases.
- When plaintiffs do win product liability cases, more than half the awards are less than $27,000.
- Awards over $1 million are most common when the plaintiff has suffered grievous injury (paralysis, brain damage, amputation) and over half of these large awards are either reversed or reduced substantially by the trial judge or on appeal.
- Only a small fraction of a percent of all findings for the plaintiff award punitive damages. Between 1965 and 1994, there were 379 punitive damage awards in the U.S. in product liability lawsuits. Half of these awards were less than $50,000.
- According to the Consumer Federation of America, liability suits add about 0.26% to the cost of consumer goods. This number is similar to what the National Association of Insurance Commissioners found.

Re:I'll bite.On that question the U.S. is lying. They have shown no evidence.
You people have got to WAKE UP!
We're drowning in evidence. Iraq is building a reactor. For what? Why do you suppose the most oil-abundant nation in the world has been feverishly investing billions of dollars in nuclear reactors? (And Iraq's GDP in 2000 was just $6.6B.) Concerns about fossil fuel emissions? This is the madman who set oil wells on fire at the end of the Gulf War which burned for many months (years?) spewing black smoke into the atmosphere.
See the first item on this page, Iraq: Failing To Disarm
Videos, audio, pictures, slide shows, and transcripts. Featured are Secretary of State Colin Powell's 76-minute presentation to the U.N. and a "60 Minutes" interview. The first hour of Powell's presentation is about Saddam's WMD and his systematic means of deception to make fools of U.N. weapons inspectors. The last 16 minutes are devoted to Iraqi terrorist connections, which is the main kind of evidence for which you are asking. -

Story more to the point here at NY Post
Guess it is all really about lobbying.
They seem to be doing as a free promotion and get back from the decline of 9% attendence from the previous year by drawing up interest.
Anyway, this is one of those stories Slashdot posts just to pay the Mac crowd lip service. Maybe, a better post would be the usual "Gosh, OS X sure is pretty."

Alan Alda in QED might work......since the article leaves open that De Niro might be looking for a movie to produce and not necessarily act in.
This review, and this one, and this one all seemed to like it. But more importantly, Kip Thorne said when he saw Alda in Los Angeles that it was like spending some time with Feynman once again.
I know if QED opened within 200 miles of me, I'd go see it. Alda has done great work and Feynman's life was amazing.

Cunning plan to destroy US economy
Yeah, them terrorists are really clever. They started littering every US airport with clueless people dressed in an intimidating uniform, who boldly search you, frisk you and detain you at the drop of a hat. They forced a honest woman to drink her own breast milk, they pulled a women from a plane coming back from Vegas because of a sex toy...
Their cluelessness and hardnosedness turns even the shortest travel into a horrendous wasted-day experience, from which exhausted, humiliated passengers emerge swearing they'll drive next time.
And it's working too. Look, three US airline companies are currently under Chapter 11. The damage to the US economy is staggering. Airline losses are piling up, already amounting to tens of billions of dollars.
Oh, wait. The people who turned fast-food joint rejects into unfireable Federal agents are actually the gummint, not Muslim mujahidins. Ahem. Never mind.

Palm's PR Department Doing Its Job
Page 5 of today's NY Post (one of three major tabloids) featured as lovely a plug as Palm could hope for, leading me to wonder what may be the financial relationship between the Post and Palm.
It is in no sense "news" that Palm is releasing a new OS, and the fluff piece that they printed wouldn't be news under any circumstances. -
Now the FBI can team with new partners! To: FBI Field Offices
From: John Ashcroft
Subject: Time to make new friendsAs many of you are aware, our righteous pursuit of organized crime in Boston has led to unwarranted criticism since our agents had to become one with the Mob in order to fully develop our intelligence sources within it. We will henceforth improve our public relations posture by returning to the policy of J. Edgar 'There-Is-No-Mob-in-America' Hoover, and refocus on developing intelligence sources within the Islamic Fundamentalist, Catholic Pedophile, and Hippie Treehugging communities.
Pursuant to the new policies, deep cover may require our good agents to occassionally take part in IF and CP activities in order to go after the true heads of those nefarious movements. However, special care must be taken not to go too far.
Get busy! And remember, the sacrifices freedom requires may seem at time distasteful, but to guard the largest number of the American citizenry, we must sometimes prove our trustworthiness to our intelligence sources by aiding in the sacrifice of lesser numbers, such as those jailed and killed to protect our Boston associates. It is a small price to pay.
Remember to wipe the Crisco from your foreheads before undertaking undercover activities. We must not gloat that we are the annointed ones.

PCGo to some random college campus and see how people are treated when their views don't conform to the prevailing orthodoxy. Print the wrong thing in a student newspaper and the copies of the newspaper will be stolen or destroyed. Invite the wrong speaker to the campus and see the heckler's veto, death threats and spineless capitulation from the college administration. See how student funds are allocated to campus groups based on ideology. Watch academic freedom vanish when a professor is accused of thought crimes.
See this op-ed column to see what passes for tolerance on some campuses.

Another article
I read a similar article in the NY Post earlier today. http://www.nypost.com/business/46726.htm
Although I don't care for AOLTW, I have noticed a common theme in all the articles I've read about the subject today... they all mention explicitly, "the merger should not have happened". Seems to me like a little fishy business going on in the media, especially with such a story breaking out on a Monday morning. Just be aware that this news may be a bit orchestrated. -
Re:Black Hawk Down
The United States was repeatedly cautioned by other nations to not involve themselves in Somali affairs, as they were a mish-mash of various warlords each having armed forces and all being about as sane as a bucket of loons on a Sunday.
The United States, however, being pricked repeatedly by one particular of these warlords, decided that they, being smarter and stronger than the nations who warned them, would take care of this pesky warlord.
Their execution of this plan was fatally flawed. The soldiers were not familiar with the methods of fighting employed by the locals. They did not know how to act effectively when a crowd of civilians acted as shields for the militants. Basically, the entire effort receded into a "Cover each other and back the hell up" scenario, which just barely managed to get the bulk of US Soldiers out alive.
Heroism? Where? What was heroic? Bad orders came down based on bad policy, executed by ill-prepared soldiers. Is it heroic to survive?
I would gladly send an e-mail to the soldiers involved. Particuarly John Stebbins (name changed to John Grimes for the movie). Ewan MacGregor's character -- You know him? The one who failed in attempting to join the regular forces three times during the Gulf War, before somehow being permitted to join the Rangers? Unfortunately, he probably isn't too easy to get ahold of these days.
The movie was grossly exaggerated and removed from any meaningful context. As a result, it cannot be called "truth". It is entertainment, not a historical document.
-l
-
oh yes, what hero's!No mention in the review of the fact that the hero of Mogadishu (character name changed, played by Ewan MacGregor) is now in Leavenworth. Read about his heroism in raping and molesting children.
Elsewhere one can read about how, not suprisingly, our current mideast conflict has as much connection with oil as any in the past.

Red Cross Got What It Deserved...After all what would you call someone who bombed a Red Cross depot ?
Smart. After the events of the last two days, the Red Cross needs to be eliminated as a criminal organization. It has taken $100 million of the $550 million donated to it for 9/11 recovery and decided that American victims of the 9/11 ATROCITY don't deserve it. Children in my neighborhood scrambled around, hitting up every person they saw for money for the Red Cross. Its sad to know their hard work and heart felt desire to help was for nothing. Now we find out that the Red Cross is going to misappropriate that money for other purposes. If you or I took $100 million and diverted it for purposes other than the intended, I think we would be in deep trouble. What is even worse, there is no guarantee that the Red Cross will use majority of the money donated for the 9/11 Atrocity will be used for the victims. Very disturbing to say the least!!!
<SARCASM> Also, painting BIG RED CROSSES on your buildings tend to make them easier to hit. </SARCASM>

Re:Other services
The RIAA is going after the FastTrack network (KaZaA, Morpheus, and Grokster) next. This is going to be the next big battle, as this network isn't centralized (at least, not as centralized as Napster was), so the RIAA will have a harder time proving that FT is responsible. Another intesting thing about the FT network is that the latest version locks out the open source client that the giFT project is developing (it worked again briefly over the weekend, but now it's broken again). While they try to get it up and running with the new FT network, they say that they're also developing and their own open source network (OpenFT).
In parallel with the FT assault, the RIAA, as of Monday, decided to go after AudioGalaxy (read about it in the NY Post over here). AudioGalaxy has filters in place, but the RIAA says they aren't good enough. -

Re:A long-term solution
Of course you're right about much of that, but nobody here wants to hear it. A large majority of U.S. citizens have *no frigging idea* what our foreign policy is, or how we might be perceived by citizens of other countries. Nor do they really seem to care.
Sadly, I don't think anyone here even wants peace. I wish I was wrong, but it seems that we are bent on revenge at any cost, even if that cost is more terrorism in the long run.
After casting the lone vote against immediately approving military action, and urging that Congress "step back for a moment and think through the implications of our action today so that it does not spiral out of control." Congresswoman Barbara Lee received death threats and is now under guard by police.
I thought she spoke wisely, but I guess that kind of talk is not welcome right now. -
Re:Economic IdeaThere are a few pieces of evidence implicating the US government, or individuals within the US government.
- On September 11, someone allegedly threatened the president with codes indicating inside knowledge of the president's whereabouts. If this story true, it means there is a traitor somewhere at a high level in the administration. If it's false, it means that the government is deliberately leaking false information, in an attempt not to make the president look bad.
-
There is some evidence that there were warnings of the attack:
Security heightened at WTC, Bin Laden warnings, State Dept. advisory
Echelon warnings
Israeli intelligence
San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown
A crazed Iranian in Germany
A US army base in New Jersey - Circumstantial evidence of the US training terrorists.
So why is it unreasonable to speculate about the US government?
-
Over the top editorials
Numerous editorials in todays NY Post have advocated ignoring the law and using racist, mob logic to correct the injustice of yesterday's attack. These frothing calls to action are not only irresponsible, they are barbarous.
"Who is responsible for yesterday's carnage? That's no great mystery."
- editorial 4006
The law of the land is innocent until proven guilty. Until there is concrete evidence pointing to the perpetrators of the terrorist attacks, there can be no action. If the US attacks without evidence, then we are terrorists as well, and would deserve all the condemnation we are piling on our - still unknown - attackers.
"To hell with Bill Clinton's 'gather the evidence and proceed to court' approach."
- editorial 4022
"The response ... should be as simple as it is swift - kill the bastards. No, I don't mean hunt them, arrest them, extradite them and prosecute them in a court of law. I mean a far quicker and neater form of retribution for this cabal of cowards. A gunshot between the eyes, blow them to smithereens, poison them if you have to."
- Steve Dunleavy editorial 3999
Both of these editorialists call for dismissing the due process on which our justice system is based. They call for the removal of equal treatment under the law. These demands for extreme measures are demands for the creation of a dictatorship, of a police state. Assassinations, executions without trials, condemnation without evidence - these are the hallmarks of regimes like Stalin's Soviet Union, Mao Tse Tung's China and Hitler's Germany.
Consistent and reasoned responses are imperitive in civilized society. Everything else is barbarism.
