Re:One *little* thing
I think nobody here will deny that military care during active duty is one of the finest. But once you leave service, you are worse off than other civilians without medical history. If you compare figures for homelessnes, poverty, suicide rates you'll see that veterans are underprivileged in the very society that used to praise them. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/22/us/22suicide.html?_r=1&ref=us&oref=slogin This is a NY Times article talking about suicide prevention, that is still in natal phase as far as efficiency is concerned. I'm afraid you have to login to read, but if you perform a web search, you'll find a lot of references. Also, there is a class action lawsuit out there, that has to do with lack of care for veterans. It's mentioned in the article, but there should be plenty references elsewhere, too. I've been following american wars closely and military is quite eager to heal physical wounds, that are visible and grueling. Your parent post was dead on, when it mentioned mental disorders. Those are the most dangerous and not taken care of sufficiently.

Re:They are unpleasant already
Doh! I'm not quite sure how that happened, as the post where I looked up the metacognition article for came afterwards... but either way, here's the article I meant to link: Rethinking the Meat Guzzler.

An advocate in government?New York's new governor, David Patterson, is legally blind! This interesting article explains: As one of his first acts as governor, he added instructions to his official state Web site on how to enlarge the type on the screen.
"It's just being more sensitive to people who feel that government and institutions ignore them," he said. A pretty small first step... but perhaps having a blind person in a prominent position like this will allow him to call attention to issues of web accessibility for blind people? -
Re:yesOkay, here goes:
Define unnecessary suffering? Did you define it based on human standards or the animals.
I meant this as avoiding causing animals to suffer, if it can be reasonably avoided. Like all ethical calculations, there's no one absolute obvious answer to all situations. If I can punch a cow in the face in order to save 10 people's lives, it seems reasonable to cause that one cow to suffer. There are other situations where it may not be as clear. This is inherent to all ethical dilemmas.
Do you want everyone to be Vegan?
Sure, that would be nice.
Do you want the extinction of whole swaths of animals?
Generally speaking, no. However, you seem to be implying that extinction carries an ethical weight; that it's something inherently bad that should be avoided. Why do you think that, exactly?
Do you use any parts of dead animals?
Everybody in modern developed societies does. I try to limit it as much as possible. I don't eat meat, I don't wear fur or leather, I try to push myself to avoid buying things that have explicit dead animal parts in them.
Unfertilized eggs?
I don't buy them, no. Not because I think the genetic code in the eggs deserves not to be eaten, but because the industry that produced the egg is probably causing chickens to suffer.
If a human life is saved from Animal Research, was it worth it?
This is certainly a more interesting question than whether it's worth it to kill an animal because someone wants to eat it instead of some tofu. It depends on the circumstances. If you'd say "yes", would you say that it's worth it if the research causes one million primates to suffer unbearable torture? It's an ethical calculation. All I'd argue for is that we consider the suffering of animals and not just add it into the equation as a big fat zero.
Are you a diabetic, if so be sure to refuse all the medicine since that came from research that caused animal suffering.
Nope, but I would not exist if it weren't for animal testing on Rhesus Monkeys (see here for details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhesus_blood_group_system ). Does that mean I should just accept that all animal testing is okay? I'm not sure what you're arguing here.
Are you, as a human an animal? If so (I would hope you say yes) shouldn't you be trying to end human suffering first.
You seem to be assuming that all animals have some obligation to first end intraspecies suffering, before considering interspecies suffering. I don't think this makes much sense. But, of course, I do value the eradication of human suffering. Do you? Does that mean everyone has go work to end human suffering before considering other causes?
I personally have nothing against a Vegetarian diet. But Veganism will always lead to trouble. It is not healthy (i'm not talking diet, i'm talking civilization here.) I want you to be honest with yourself. Why should you change the order of nature that has existed for millions of years, just because you can suddenly afford it. Does it make you feel superior that you can survive a Vegan lifestyle while poorer people in other nations can not. What about the 2 kids this past year in SF who were forced a Vegan lifestyle from birth and ended up suffering from mal-nutrition rarely ever seen in modern society. If they were simply allowed milk would their bones not have broken so easily. Their mothers milk was useless.
Those people were crazy, not vegan. Repeat: they were crazy and not vegan. Technically, they were both, but let's be clear about which one comes first. You'd do better to read the letters to the editor that were published in response to the NYT article about that story--they include a letter from someone who testified for the pr

Re:HTML
Speaking of HTML, it's amazing how many high-profile sites fail validation. For example, I just ran http://www.nytimes.com/ through http://validator.w3.org/ with a result of "Failed validation, 454 Errors." "Something like HTML that browsers can more-or-less read" is not actual HTML. When I redid a local newspaper's site, I did it by hand (in nicely formatted, human-readable HTML) and made sure that every page passed validation before it went live.

Inanity
Due respect, you mostly highlight your own ignorance with this shallow post. I am not certain by what mechanism easting large quantities of meat would allow "rapid evolution." But industrial-scale meat production is a huge factor for global warming and other environmental destruction, not to mention large-scale systemically-enforced economic inequality. There are health problems too, (hormones and antibiotics and other icky stuff) although they aren't as big as some people like to think. But seriously -- read something: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/27/weekinreview/27bittman.html?scp=1&sq=meat-guzzler&st=nyt And this ignores the apparently irrelevant notion of animal suffering, which if mentioned gets you immediately written of as a hopeless crank. The funny thing is that slashdotters are such a smart group, and yet people immediately swim to the shallow end of the intellectual pool when this issue comes up. 98 percent of the time I am content to make the "mmm... meat is tasty" jokes right along with everyone else, despite being vegan. Mostly so I don't get stuck with that "humorless vegan weirdo" label. Such is the power of social pressure. But it is an intellectually bankrupt position. I figured with all of the philosophy-major/hobbyist types lurking around here someone would have figured that out by now. Being concerned with animal welfare is just like being an atheist (I am) surrounded by christians (I have been). You get all of these stupid, stupid, scripted responses and you just smile blankly and nod in response at how obviously you hadn't realized Stalinism was attributable to atheism, and of course! where did the universe come from -- you know -- before the big bang? Because the alternative is to slowly and painfully start from first principles and explain physics and evolution and of course when you're done you won't have changed anyone's mind anyway, except to convince them that you're hopelessly alien and misguided... Well, animal rights is the same thing. You immediately get the: you people care more about animals than people; we're supposed to eat meat -- it's like, natural, man; blah blah blah. God, just looking at all of the stupid, stupid posts here is exhausting -- it is like reading a right-wing politics board -- you don't even know where to begin. This ridiculous (on it's face, after, like
.5 seconds of thinking about it you supposed mensa geeks, you) notion that vegetarian and vegan identity begins and ends with being into animal welfare. Usually expressed as: "we care more about animals than we do about people." Like we wake up in the morning and just sit around being vegan. Maybe stroking a cat and cutting up pictures of our families to use as kitty litter. Most vegan and vegetarians I know are intensely ethical people, whose avoidance of meat-products stems from a deep concern with issues of justice, sustainability and empathy. Most vegans and vegetarians I know are vastly more committed to working for positive (left-leaning obviously) social change than most of the meat-eaters I know. Not everyone, of course -- being an activist isn't a requirement for being a vegan. But what I find ironic are all of the people running around, wringing their hands because of global warming and dutifully re-using their shopping bags. Like many if not most slashdotters, I imagine. Because I am doing more to fight global warming by just sitting on my ass being vegan (and riding a lot of public transportation) than you are going to do in a year with all of your angry tirades about the Bush Administration and "buying local" and deciding to spend a little more for the "Rainforest Crunch" Ben & Jerry's. Half the people in bus with me on the way to the anti-torture protest where we so outnumbered the police they couldn't even arrest us were vegetarians. Most of you meat eaters weren't even there, even though you care soooo much more about human than animal rights. Really, -
Re:The comments here indicate the movie was a succI don't see the analogy.
Intelligent Design hasn't produced anything even remotely approaching a "very, very solid study".
The Templeton Foundation doesn't even touch the Intelligent Design people. The Templeton Foundation, a major supporter of projects seeking to reconcile science and religion, says that after providing a few grants for conferences and courses to debate intelligent design, they asked proponents to submit proposals for actual research.
"They never came in," said Charles L. Harper Jr., senior vice president at the Templeton Foundation, who said that while he was skeptical from the beginning, other foundation officials were initially intrigued and later grew disillusioned.
Intelligent Design is a political movement founded in religious belief. Anything that presents it as doing anything but donning the trappings of science is a lie, pure and simple. -

Fisker Coachbuild, fraudulently agreed to take on Tesla's $875,000 design contract to gain access to confidential design information and trade secrets, then announced a competing vehicle. Tesla Motors Files Suit
7/8 of a million just doesn't seem like a lot of money for what they were hired to do, I suspect that if the contracts had real NDA's and non-compete clauses the costs would have been substantially more. Even more likely the "trade secret" was that there were no trade secrets and any joe snuffy can hire an engineer or two and build one of these things using predominately off the shelf harware if he has enough mad-cash to get it going. -

What's next guys, raping a nun?Every day these guys sink to new lows. It's a shame that Lou Dobbs or some other "crusader" type TV pundit hasn't jumped on this saga yet. The RIAA would give a lot of ammo to any pundit looking to rant about something outrageous every day.
The sad thing is, there are real legal issues here. The RIAA is using the American court system as an vehicle of intimidation, and to give a mask of legality very illegal activities (like investigating people with unlicensed private investigators, shotgun lawsuits that target innocent people, organized extortion, etc.). Meanwhile, the courts seem all too willing to just sit back and let them do it, with no acknowledgement that this is part of an organized campaign. I guess the Supreme Court has more important things to deal with.

Re:US airport security theory:
This service only exists between Boston and DC, and is extremely expensive to travel on. Most other routes are considerably worse.
As has been recently reported, outside of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, their national on-time rate in 2007 was 42%. FORTY TWO FRICKIN PERCENT. However, Acela's on-time rate is around 86%. The main difference seems to be prioritization of traffic on the rails: on Acela, Amtrak owns the tracks and can make the traffic move smoothly, while throughout most of the rest of the country, Amtrak rents track usage from freight lines, who don't give a rat's ass about passenger rail, and this has cost millions of dollars for Amtrak (and by extension, taxpayers).

Torture Victim Had No Terror Link, Canada Told U.S.
By SCOTT SHANE
Published: September 25, 2006
WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 â" When the United States sent Maher Arar to Syria, where he was tortured for months, the deportation order stated unequivocally that Mr. Arar, a Canadian software engineer, was a member of Al Qaeda. But a few days earlier, Canadian investigators had told the F.B.I. that they had not been able to link him to the terrorist group.
That is one of the disclosures in the 1,200-page report released last week after a two-year Canadian investigation of Mr. Ararâ(TM)s case found him to be innocent of any terrorist ties. The report urges the Canadian government to formally protest the American treatment of Mr. Arar, a recommendation Canadian officials are considering. -

Use cooperatives instead of the municipality. The problem with paying things through the municipality is that their bonding gets paid-for by everybody. Ask any of the towns which bonded to build railroads that didn't get built a hundred or so years ago. Re:Why Subscribe?
I'm not too worried about Comcast. The things they do (especially this and the whole guy-sleeping-on-the-job thing) would only serve to either get people moving to other (non-cable?) ISPs (if any) or revolting for fair cable-company laws; it's all shooting themselves in the foot to me.
I am far, far more sickened by my favorite evil Northeast US company, Cablevision; they do seem to provide good service (my parents get cable and my siblings get their Triple Play; I've seen no problems with service, but the "Caller ID on iO TV" spooks me a bit), at the expense of basketball teams worth rooting for (FYI, Garden owners: free food does not make up for team negligence...not that you'd care with the money you make with that Triple Play and its associated annoying ads), competing stadiums (granted, Verizon is no innocent company by any means), competing ISPs, new subway/train stations, and maybe even commuter security (Cablevision suggests otherwise, but their words are hard for me to take as told).
To answer parent comment's question, I suppose people subscribe because...well, when you get email, Colbert, VoIP and such powerful, important abilities like the ability to RickRoll others and Digg the result (ugh *vomits*), who cares about silly things like fair and lawful treatment of consumers, sports fans, and competing ISPs?
Me, I'll use DSL (Verizon, which hasn't given me much, if any, throttling problems) until there's a good free wireless network or whatever, and I've already subscribed to a different TV provider that offers HD free (I don't care that much for Olbermann). To those far from good antenna coverage: good luck, and ditch cable anyway.

-
There's more interest in this on the ad side
The use of "social networking" data for search has been discussed before in the search technology community, where it's not well thought of. "Inertia" in search, where your search history affects your later results, turns out to be a pain. Search becomes nonrepeatable, both for the individual and for others. This adds more hassle than the gain provided by "inertia".
Reading both the article and the interview with the Google VP, it's clear that the article exaggerates Google's interest in this area.
Social networking data is taken seriously on the advertising side, where using social networking data for ad selection is already being done by Myspace and their ilk. Amazon and Netflix already have rather good systems for deciding what to recommend to their customers. That's where this really works, where the seller has a big product selection and the user is already prepped to buy something. Myspace isn't doing as well, but then, as we've pointed out before, their advertisers are mostly bottom feeders. Ad rates on Myspace are very low, and it shows.
A key question is who controls the use of the social networking data for ad selection. Not the user, of course; the disagreement is between the social networking sites and the search engines. Look for a battle in that area, perhaps followed by mergers.

Re:Ever been to grad school?A million dollars? This is what happens when business people dabble in science. Artificial Intelligence grad students and professors have been studying these kinds of problems for decades.
I think that is the point - academia has been studying this for decades and has yet to produce meaningful results. I'm not saying that universities haven't contributed their fair share of technological advances through the years, but doing so in a practical and timely manner isn't exactly what they're known for. When business and/or money gets thrown into the mix, the pace of progress tends to rapidly accelerate.

According to the Netflix site there are currently 35558 contestants on 29326 teams from 170 different countries. They could have thrown any amount of money at any university and still not received the kind of effort they've seen to date. I'd say their million dollars is money well spent. -

I also think the DHS would consider that an act of terrorism and would wipe the creator of such a weed out of existence. The impact of a Round-Up ready weed on the global food supply is debatable. However, I do believe DHS would make a winning argument that it is detrimental to the food supply.
However, after some Googling (roundup ready weeds, not weed) I found that Darwin appears to be doing this for us. -
Re:Yes pleaseYou can do that today too. The problem is, we've changed what we perceive as necessary. No you can't... A job at Denny's as a bus boy will simply not pay as much as a job at "Generous Motors" did in the ol' days, despite the educational requirements being the same.
One of the custodial guys where I used to work works a day job assembling umbrellas in North Philly for a whopping $9/hour and no benefits. He then commutes out to the 'burbs by bus for 45 minutes to clean the office at the same rate. The man is lucky if he pulls in $28k/year. He doesn't have a car, and he rents a place in a crappy part of town.
I'm not saying his situation is impossible, but it's much different than having a factory income with benefits that let your wife stay home to raise the kids. it just takes proper budgeting, proper living and dedication to your job and task at hand. You are a success story, and that's great. Statistically, though, you are probably in the minority. Even you have the distinct advantage of not having to grow up in the ghetto. You were surrounded by role models who showed you what could be. You (presumably) did not have to support kids while making $8/hr. And yet there are so many who aren't. This isn't as true as it once was. Only 1 in 5 blacks live in the city anymore. Much of the blame for the dismal earnings statistics lies in demographics; blacks disproportionately live in the poor Southern states. When compared with whites in the same demographic areas, they fare quite well - actually surpassing whites in many areas. For instance, 15 years ago in Queens. no one is holding anyone down these days except themselves. That's not entirely true, but is becoming more and more true every day. I think that is why you are seeing a huge spike in the black middle class. It's not like there is something about black character that makes a black person more or less likely to be impoverished than someone descended from potato-famine Irish. And it's not like the Irish have completely shed their stereotypical image of being lazy alcoholics - even all these years later. -

Re:p4p means
ok then, lets be crystal clear about this. So your telling me that AT&T, your company's primary participator, and Internet Content Policeman did not require your company to develop a means to determine the content of a given P2P connection?
I find this very hard to believe. I do not want my protocol to notify my ISP everytime i connect to a tracker. Do you see how this is a privacy problem? -

Re:Tricky Monty
I'm surprised there is no discussion about the other problems linked in the article.
I don't want to ruin the solutions for anyone but I'll make a comment that while scanning through the "solutions" from other commenters on that page, the ones who used the word "obviously" were far more likely to be wrong (the more times they used that word, the more wrong they became). Ones who worked through the combinations were more likely to get it right. An exhaustive search rarely deceives you, these problems were designed to deceive your intuition.

Re:He's not all anti-Microsoft
We have already seen a huge shift away from laptops as the mobile computer towards dedicated devices like the Blackberry and smartphone.
Those mobile devices have serious compromises that make them all but unusuable for anything but email very simple browsing. Anything that requires a lot of screen real estate or a lot of data entry and futzing (almost most business applications) just worn't work on a small form factor device.
Just as significantly, pervasive wireless bandwidth just isn't there. I have the fastest "mobile broadband" available in Chicago, and it still is absolutely painful to visit some sites or work remotely via VPN.
The desktop is being replaced by the laptop, but I seriously doubt the laptop is going anywhere soon. Market share reports indicate the laptop is where its at.

Re:IMHO switching doors doesnt increase your odds
The article includes a a link to a simulator. Why not try your theory? Play twenty rounds where you switch, and twenty where you don't. If your theory is correct, then your average results won't change, whether you switch or not.

Neither do MBAs
Related to this story is a follow-up: http://tierneylab.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/10/the-psychology-of-getting-suckered/#more-264 In this you read "In fact, when we presented probability puzzles including a version of Monty Hall and the Mr. Smith problem to 327 MBA students who had all been trained to use such computations, they were almost seven times as likely to rely on some form of the partition-edit-count strategy than an explicit computation. Strikingly, none of the MBA students who tried to compute the answer to these puzzles arrived at a correct solution." Anyone surprised?

Article title misleading?
From an older article by the same author article:
Since she gave her [correct] answer [to the Monty Hall Problem], Ms. vos Savant estimates she has received 10,000 letters, the great majority disagreeing with her. The most vehement criticism has come from mathematicians and scientists, who have alternated between gloating at her ("You are the goat!") and lamenting the nation's innumeracy.
Since some math PhDs got it wrong too, isn't it a bit disingenuous to claim its the psychologists are the issue as the article title states? -

Dakota is not happening, yet, AFAIK. http://www.refineryreform.org/community_northdakota.htm The last refinery to be completed in the United States was in 1976, and Mr. McGinnis knows all too well that community and political opposition squashed earlier projects. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/09/business/09refinery.html Over the last quarter-century, the number of refineries in the United States dropped to 149, less than half the number in 1981. Because companies have upgraded and expanded their aging operations, refining capacity during that time period shrank only 10 percent from its peak of 18.6 million barrels a day. At the same time, gasoline consumption has risen by 45 percent. That is pretty amazing, IMO.
