Meanwhile, I totally agree about the name. It is misleading: but it, and the use of chalk for that matter, were just chosen because, well, they sound cool.

As for why an icon and not a flyer - well, because iconography is inherently more understandable. Why have roadsigns that are symbols and not words? Because they're easy to understand, and to see.

They might combine them with heartbeat, breathing, eye, and electrical signals and feed it into an expert system or neural net to identify people that are unusually nervous.

In the future they'll hide incriminating images and voices all around you and check your EEG's for "P300 waves." If your brain recognizes too many of them, it'll increase the chances of you being a suspect. John Norseen, a scientist with Lockheed Martin, is often able to discern when subjects are thinking of particular numbers. He predicts that by 2005, brain mappers will be able to automatically scan the skulls of everyone going through airports to search for potential hijackers.

They'll also have probability assessments of people instead of a definite guilty or innocent. Those with a higher probability of guilt will get more agency attention.

Eventually they'll know what you're thinking. They can already wire a computer to a cat's brain and create videos of what the animal was seeing.

All that's left is to reverse the process and plant ideas into your head.

I'm still curious as to three things:

1. Why did the editors post this blurb without indicating that independent investigators concluded that admissions director LeMenager intended only to check the security of Yale's website? The implication that he intended to spy on innocent applicants who entrusted him with their personal information is irresponsible.

   Quoth the press release.

   Mr. LeMenager entered the Yale site by using the name, birth date and social security number of a Princeton applicant who he thought might also have applied to Yale, fully expecting that he would then be asked for a password or an ID number. He was surprised to learn that there was no security beyond name, birth date and social security number.

   If LeMenager was actually committing "identity fraud" for fun and profit, why on earth would he tell Yale exactly what he did at an admissions conference in May? Read the source. LeMenager made the mistake of repeating the entry to demonstrate how it was done. That hardly qualifies him for dismissal. Quoth the press release.

   While we do not in any way condone these actions, there is no evidence that there was any intention on Mr. LeMenager's part to do anything other than test, and then demonstrate, the site's security or that he used confidential information for any other purpose.

   Lest we forget, Yale sat on this story for two months before releasing it. I've no idea why.

2. Given the sheer quantity of Slashdot wailing and chest-beating about the tragic propensity for computer-security whistleblowers to get reprimanded, sacked, or prosecuted, the sarcasm of the last paragraph of the blurb is unexpected, if not downright hypocritical.

3. I can understand why the mainstream news calls this a 'hack'. But Slashdot should know better. I'm not referring to the ESR/RMS "Editor, when you say hacker, you really mean cracker" lexicographic crusade -- I'm referring to the fact that using a name/SSN pair obtained legitimately (i.e., from an applicant who mailed it to you) to access a website is not "hacking" by even the most tortured definition of the term. It is social engineering, maybe. It is illegitimate, if done with malice, sure. But it is not "hacking."

I expected better from Slashdot.

Keyboard for Those on the Move

Whenever I hear about low-carb diets, I hear "weight loss" with a smidgeon of "may help cholesterol." I'm not interested in weight loss... so what about their affect on cholesterol? How the heck to refined Carbs turn into Cholesterol? Why don't unrefined carbs do the same (or do they)? C'mon, Alton! You've got the scientific bend to do this one right!

It's about choice, people, every bit as much as the Open Source camp purports to be. Locking patented technologies out of open standards means that you cannot choose the best technology for a given task because of someone's arbitrary complant about the 'freeness' of a part of it. To me, that's as chilling as saying we must all be locked into proprietary software, and it worries me when I hear the people supposedly on this side of the argument trying to determine my rights for me.

This is software which will be used by my government. I want to be able to audit its inner workings myself, especially if it is being used to count my vote, or store my personal data including my SS account information. Since I expect my government to outlast any given software manufacturer, I consider it important that my government should be able to maintain its own software should the manufacturer fail to do so. I do not think it appropriate that my government should be beholden to any private concern to maintain its tools; necessary revisions of existing software should be available for bid , not locked into a particular company's proprietary code base.

If the tools of government are not controlled by or even available to the people, but are controlled by private and unelected parties, then the power of the people's government has been taken from the people and handed over to private parties. Therefore, no matter what other benefits a proprietary package may bring to the table, it is not the 'best' for this purpose.

You can see his point. There's an assumption that a network where audio files are shared is necessarily going to be used to illegally copy audio generated by artists and others who rely on funding from listeners to make their livings. But you don't need to have that great an imagination to realise the full potential of P2P networks is in their ability not just to transmit music but speech and other audiotic forms, from people who want their words transmitted far and wide.

Who knows. With Ashcroft removing the illegally distributed music, perhaps a revolutionary new Napster where every voice can be heard will be the result.

it's valid nationwide. there was a article about it in the nytimes. i went and did this on tuesday out here in san francisco. after the ordeal, they give you a certificate with a code and a phone number to call to have the dvd sent to you.

The FBI's new securities fraud (pumper/dumper club) hotline also seems to be producing good tips. Barely a day after the phone line was set up (at (800) 207-7676 or http://sanfrancisco.fbi.gov), more than 20 calls and e-mails had been received. "Some of the tips we've gotten are very promising and even corroborate ongoing investigations," Black said.

Linux has ?failed? as a desktop alternative to either Microsoft's Windows or Apple's Macintosh operating system, and last year, according to a study by the International Data Corporation, Linux sales actually slumped.

Here's a flash version of your rant.

Worldcom, Imclone, Global Crossing, Enron, Adelphia, Anderson -- "a few bad apples" or a systemic problem? I think Bush saying that the American people don't care about this "stock market stuff" just shows how out of touch he is. Either that, or he simply doesn't care and he's just filling time until the next topic of the day comes along.

Here's what we know:
- George W. Bush wanted to run the government like a business
- George W. Bush has never come within 50 feet of a successful business himself. Not Harkin, not the sweetheart deal with the Texas Rangers, not even that stupid airline catering company
- Neither has Dick Cheney
- Both Cheney and Bush are so close to the oil industry that they're willing to allow companies steal money from taxpayers and business in fradulent energy schemes.

Any talk of this being a Clinton-caused recession is just willfully ignoring that the Bush's tax cut caused nearly half of the budget shortfall.

What can you do?

- Demand that the Bush Administration release information on the secret energy task force. We want to know how Enron, Haliburton, Harkin, and Unocal were involved in this
- Demand that the Bush Adminstration support an independent investigation of the goverment's actions before and after September 11. If the attacks were due to the U.S.'s quest for oil, the American people deserve to know.
- Demand that the SEC open the files on Bush's dealings with Harkin
- Demand the Justice Department come down hard on Enron
- Demand to know why Bush is so interested in attacking Iraq
- Ask yourself if you're better off now or 4 years ago. Good, now vote Democrat in November.

Oh, and ... uh ... run Linux too.

You might think that Hitler, who got elected with the financial support of big business (while in the US, Henry Ford was a major fan too), wouldn't have resorted to intellectual property to meet his need to acquire vast wealth. Not only did he earn millions in royalties from Mein Kampf, but he got a share in the proceeds from sales of photos of him by his official photographer, on whose behalf he extended the copyright law, showing that there's more than one mousey little guy with an appreciation of the value of his image!

Perhaps if Sony technology had been in place, he would have gained enough through IP control to have been satiated, and not forced take extreme measures to try to make the world a better place through his policy of regime change in neighboring lands.

Early in the film "A Beautiful Mind," the mathematician John Nash is seen sitting in a Princeton courtyard, hunched over a playing board covered with small black and white pieces that look like pebbles. He was playing Go, an ancient Asian game. Frustration at losing that game inspired the real Mr. Nash to pursue the mathematics of game theory, research for which he eventually won a Nobel Prize.

In recent years, computer experts, particularly those specializing in artificial intelligence, have felt the same fascination -- and frustration.

Programming other board games has been a relative snap. Even chess has succumbed to the power of the processor. Five years ago, a chess-playing computer called Deep Blue not only beat but thoroughly humbled Garry Kasparov, the world champion at the time. That is because chess, while highly complex, can be reduced to a matter of brute force computation.

Go is different. Deceptively easy to learn, either for a computer or a human, it is a game of such depth and complexity that it can take years for a person to become a strong player. To date, no computer has been able to achieve a skill level beyond that of the casual player.

The game is played on a board divided into a grid of 19 horizontal and 19 vertical lines. Black and white pieces called stones are placed one at a time on the grid's intersections. The object is to acquire and defend territory by surrounding it with stones.

Programmers working on Go see it as more accurate than chess in reflecting the ineffable ways in which the human mind works. The challenge of programming a computer to mimic that process goes to the core of artificial intelligence, which involves the study of learning and decision-making, strategic thinking, knowledge representation, pattern recognition and, perhaps most intriguingly, intuition.

"A good Go player could make a move and other players say, `Yes, that's a good move,' but they can't explain to you why it's a good move, or how they even know it's a good move," said Dr. John McCarthy, a professor emeritus at Stanford University and a pioneer in artificial intelligence.

Dr. Danny Hillis, a computer designer and chairman of the technology company Applied Minds, said that the depth of Go made it ripe for the kind of scientific progress that comes from studying one example in great detail. "We want the equivalent of a fruit fly to study," Dr. Hillis said. "Chess was the fruit fly for studying logic. Go may be the fruit fly for studying intuition."

Along with intuition, pattern recognition is a large part of the game. While computers are good at crunching numbers, people are naturally good at matching patterns. Humans can recognize an acquaintance at a glance, even from the back. "Every Go book is filled with advice on patterns of different kinds," Dr. McCarthy said.

Dr. Daniel Bump, a mathematics professor at Stanford, works on a program called GNU Go in his spare time. "You can very quickly look at a chess game and see if there's some major issue," he said. But to make a decision in Go, he said, players must learn to combine their pattern-matching abilities with the logic and knowledge they have accrued in years of playing.

"If you watch really strong players," Dr. Bump said, "some seem to make fairly mundane moves, but at the end of the game they're ahead. Others do spectacular things."

One measure of the challenge the game poses is the performance of Go computer programs. The last five years have yielded incremental improvements but no breakthroughs, said David Fotland, a programmer and chip designer in San Jose, Calif., who created and sells The Many Faces of Go, one of the few commercial Go programs.

Mr. Fotland's program was the winner of a tournament last weekend in Edmonton, Alberta, that pitted 14 Go-playing programs -- including several from Japan -- against one another. But even The Many Faces of Go is weak enough that most strong players could beat it handily.

Part of the challenge has to do with processing speed. The typical chess program can evaluate about 300,000 positions per second, and Deep Blue was able to evaluate some 200 million positions per second. By midgame, most Go programs can evaluate only a couple of dozen positions each second, said Anders Kierulf, who wrote a program called SmartGo.

In the course of a chess game, a player has an average of 25 to 35 moves available. In Go, on the other hand, a player can choose from an average of 240 moves. A Go-playing computer would take about 30,000 years to look as far ahead as Deep Blue can with chess in three seconds, said Michael Reiss, a computer scientist in London.

If processing power were all there was to it, the solution would be simply a matter of time, since computers are growing ever faster. But the obstacles go much deeper. Not only do Go programs have trouble evaluating positions quickly, they have trouble evaluating them correctly.

Nonetheless, the allure of computer Go increases as the difficulties it poses encourage programmers to advance basic work in artificial intelligence. Graduate students produce dissertations on the topic, and a handful of researchers around the world devote much or all of their attention to it.

The game attracts people from all fields. For example, Chen Zhixing, a retired chemistry professor in Guangzhou, China, wrote a program called Handtalk, which dominated the computer Go field for several years. Dr. Bump, 50, whose field is number theory, has been playing Go for 35 years and taught himself the C programming language four years ago so he could write Go software. Mr. Fotland, 44, the creator of The Many Faces of Go has been working on computer Go for 20 years and is chief technology officer at Ubicom, a small semiconductor company in Silicon Valley.

All are very strong Go players, and it takes a strong Go player to write even a weak Go program. Mr. Fotland, for instance, said he had written programs for checkers, Othello and chess. The algorithms are all very similar, and it is not difficult to write a reasonably strong program, he said. Each of the games took him a year or two to finish. "But when I started on Go," he said, "there was no end to it."

Mr. Fotland said that his Go programming was especially weak when he was a beginning player. "A lot of the stuff I wrote was just plain wrong because I didn't understand the game well enough," he said.

Even when skill develops, however, translating it into a program is not an obvious task. "There's a certain stream of consciousness when you're looking at positions," Dr. Bump said. "You might look at 10 variations, but you don't really know what's going on in the back of your mind. Even a strong player doesn't know how his mind works when he looks at a position."

"We think we have the basics of what we do as humans down pat," Dr. Bump said. "We get up in the morning and make breakfast, but if you tried to program a computer to do that, you'd quickly find that what's simple to you is incredibly difficult for a computer."

The same is true for Go. "When you're deciding what variations to consider, your subconscious mind is pruning," he said. "It's hard to say how much is going on in your mind to accomplish this pruning, but in a position on the board where I'd look at 10 variations, the computer has to look at thousands, maybe a million positions to come to the same conclusions, or to wrong conclusions."

Dr. Reiss, who is the author of Go4++, a previous champion that placed second in last weekend's playoff, agrees with Dr. Bump. Dr. Reiss, who is an expert in neural networks, compares a human being's ability to recognize a strong or weak position in Go with the ability to distinguish between an image of a chair and one of a bicycle. Both tasks, he said, are hugely difficult for a computer.

For that reason, Mr. Fotland said, "writing a strong Go program will teach us more about making computers think like people than writing a strong chess program."

Dr. Reiss, who works on Go full time, said he would not think of devoting his time to any other problem. "It's a fundamentally interesting problem, but also it's just the right level of difficulty," he said. "If it was too easy it would have been solved already. If it was fantastically difficult, people might give up in frustration."

"I think in the long run the only way to write a strong Go program is to have it learn from its own mistakes, which is classic A.I., and no one knows how to do that yet," Mr. Fotland said. A few programs have some learning capabilities built into them.

Mr. Fotland's program, for instance, refers to a database of games played by strong players in deciding its moves, and Dr. Reiss's program employs a learning scheme for deciding which moves are interesting to look at.

Dr. Reiss said he had come up with an idea for a new Go program that would learn by analyzing professional games. But to pursue his idea would require too much work, he said, depriving him of time to continue making updates to his current program.

It seems unlikely that a computer will be programmed to drub a strong human player any time soon, Dr. Reiss said. "But it's possible to make an interesting amount of progress, and the problem stays interesting," he said. "I imagine it will be a juicy problem that people talk about for many decades to come."

Interesting article about Frances E. Allen in the NY Times yesterday. She just retired from IBM after 45 years. She joined the company in 1957. Her first job: teaching FORTRAN to skeptical IBM programmers. Up until then, everybody at Big Blue was hand coding assembly.

I care about my fair use rights to copy content for my personal use. I with all of you on that. I DO NOT care about my rights to mass distribute media to anonymous people.

But, you see, the RIAA doesn't know or care if you're making copies for personal use, making a mix CD to play at your parents' 50th wedding anniversary party, emailing your college fight song to your old roomate, or putting the new Britney Spears single up on Napster. There's no technical way to distinguish between those, because they all must take into account your intent. So if you let the RIAA/MPAA dictate what you can do with your technology, and what you can do with the media that you legally obtain, then your fair use rights will be impacted. That's why you should oppose this Congressional involvement, even if you consider everyone who uses P2P a freeloading internet pirate.

These millionaire artists can change the system ANYTIME THEY WANT, so you'll excuse me for not having a lot of sympathy for their cause. Any time they want they can start up their own record companies. But funny how new record companies start to work like old record companies, because they have subsidize 100 failures for every 1 success.

The point isn't that the artists are millionaries, or that they haven't changed the system. The point is that most reports point to the MPAA/RIAA being, at beast, a price-fixing cartel who sign gullible artists to slave-like contracts. Yes, I'm well aware that the artists sign those contracts, but even given that, Big Hollywood is about the farthest thing from a Good and Pure group as you'll find, thus the amazement that you'd use them as a contrast for P2P users who are out to "rip people off". Just different sides of the same coin.

People can be late for meetings as long as they call and say things like "I'm fifteen minutes away," and it's now more acceptable. He also talks about how you sort of plan unspecifically to meet someone for dinner after work, and you sort of home in on each other in location and time by calling their phones in the middle of a crowd or a parking lot.

I never wear a watch anymore, really. I think the days of precise time for human scheduling are starting to weaken.

Actually, ever since my class in Critical Thinking, I've pretty much assumed whoever wrote the piece has some ax to grind.
It's a fairly safe assumption.

Biden's bill is mentioned, along with the "broadcast flag" proposal and the "license to hack" proposal, in this New York Times Article.

Most U.S. newspapers are affiliated with the AP and Reuters, though a smaller number use the Agence France-Presse, which is more popular internationally. Then there's United Press International, which is practically dead, so few papers use it.

Knight Ridder and Gannett are different animals altogether. They are huge corporations which own dozens of tiny newspapers you've never heard of and a few larger papers (USA Today is Gannett's flagship paper, while the San Jose Mercury News is KR's, though KR's Miami Herald is a better paper). One of the "advantages" of these giant corporations is that they share stories with other papers in the corporation, which enables a paper in Fargo to cover an event in San Francisco without having to put up the money for a regional bureau.

Better papers (New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, etc.) maintain their own bureaus outside their hometowns (for instance, the Washington Post has about 10 bureaus in U.S. cities outside DC [Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, etc.], and about 12 bureaus in international cities [London, Tokyo, Moscow, etc.]), so they use a far higher percentage of their own content, but they still use the AP, Reuters and AFP for stories they can't afford to cover themselves or don't have the time to reach. However, you won't see a Knight Ridder story in a paper like the New York Times.

The big difference here is that aggregators/metabrowsers are computers that display headlines without discretion. Newspapers employ editors who have been trained in the art/science of news judgment. For this reason, a metabrowser will quickly become exceptionally boring and irrelevant.
