mirrored on Coral
the article
another article killed by slashdot instead of linking to the coral version, or creating their own mirror.
how many more times does this have to happen?
Am I the only one who thinks this is crazy that this site built a backbone for itself and then uses its traffic to kill sites it links to?

Re:More than just copyright violation...
what about this site:
the site
This must be a similar violation? -
OT Question about the link.
The link in the article seems to be a DNS nightmare. I'm not talking about the port(thanks anyway AC), I'm referring to the use of a pseudo IP address in the DNS name which then resolves to a series of equally strange aliases. Observe:
[nobody@sys1 ~]$ host 64.252.62.40.nyud.net
nyud.net DNAME http.l2.l1.l0.nyucd.net.
64.252.62.40.nyud.net is an alias for 64.252.62.40.http.l2.l1.l0.nyucd.net.
64.252.62.4 0.http.l2.l1.l0.nyucd.net is an alias for http.l2.l1.l0.nyucd.net.
http.l2.l1.l0.nyucd.net has address 128.143.137.250
http.l2.l1.l0.nyucd.net has address 128.59.67.201
http.l2.l1.l0.nyucd.net has address 128.59.67.202
Can anyone explain to me the reason/advantage of such a complex and convoluted hostnaming scheme? What admin would willingly do this to himself?

Re:Slicing the rocksThe problem with the brute force methods of slicing rocks is that you tend to spin in the opposite direction unless you have a decent anchor, such as gravity. And as for Nobel's invention, blowing it up is probably going to piss off a large number of other space users...
A better way would be to get some of those green "weapon grade" lasers

People are working on the principles underlying such a concept. Some links:
- ShareCam, ALPHA Lab, University of California, Berkeley.
- Info on observer.berkeley.edu and its FAQ.
- "The co-opticon (a.k.a. the ShareCam) is a machine for democratic optics, allowing a network of participants to cooperatively control the viewpoint of a shared video camera. The co-opticon combines a networked robotic video camera with a graphical user interface that allows many internet-based viewers to share simultaneous control of the camera by specifying desired viewing frames. Algorithms compute the optimal camera frame based on all requests, and position the camera accordingly."
- demonstrate.berkeley.edu. The installation combines the world's most advanced networked robotic camera, a visual database, and a mathematical model of socio-ocular camera control.

P.S. Coral cache acting weird from here. Couldn't coralize all the links.

cellularSeriously, what kind of commentary is this, especially with the FCC giving unprecedented amounts of frequency bandwidth back to the public?
If it can tune in cellular frequencies, sorry, it's already illegal in the US and pretty much any other developed nation. Various dictatorship-countries would probably instantly declare anyone they found owning this kind of thing to be a 'spy'.
I imagine this scares the crap out of the FCC. , because prior to this the only thing that stood between your phone call and...well..anyone...was that they had a leash on all the companies that could make such devices.

Re:Proof that a group
I really don't understand what's up with you artsy types. Coders spend a zillion hours of their free time to make a free open source game just so others can enjoy it but you can't do the same for a bunch of notes? Sure, dream on that one day you'll be famous and you can sell the rights for some disgustingly large sum of money.
You missed the parent's point completely.
Coders give PlaneShift their work under the GPL. "Artsy types" give their work under PSL (the PlaneShift Lisence). From that link:
You may not copy, modify, publish, transmit, sell, participate in the transfer or sale or reproduce, create Derivative Works from, distribute, perform, display or in any way exploit any of the Material released under this License unless expressly permitted by the PlaneShift Team.
This is what the parent referred to as "relicensing". Also, since they are donating their work (as in not being paid for it), AFAIK, it's actually impossible for them to give up copyright under US Law... In other words, the PSL would never stand up in court, so stop pretending to be lawyers (people go to school for a long time for that), shove your PSL up your ass, and publish the stuff under some sort of CCL. -

It's because it's using the Intel 263 Codec... a brief Google search shows that you can download it from this webpage...
Here are coral cache links to the actual codec downloads:

Coralized link of the DRM'ed T2 Extreme DVDQuick summary for all those too lazy to read the article:
Content needed WMP9 with InterActual Player, which required a license, which could only be retrieved if you connected from US or Canada. And, the content could only be played for 5 days. Author concludes "Shame on you Artisan Home Entertainment Inc. and may this serve as a prime example of DRM at its worst." -

Interesting stats
Here's a link for the central internet exchange for Finnish ISP's to link together. Coralized FICIX stats.
Compare the stats from week ago, and today. Guess what changed?
Most telling is the last graph indicating traffic for the whole year.
The largest Finnish torrent site, Finreactor got busted by Keskusrikospoliisi (roughly the same as FBI of USA).
I guess they weren't sharing just Linux images ;P -
Animated GIF of what's happening....
There's some brilliant web coverage of this topic available. Just look at the animated GIF (via CORALIZED link) at
the site http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov.nyud.net:8090
to see how dramatic this is. For more, including the GIF, see:
http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov.nyud.net:8090
(For those who don't know: The above links to an automatically cached version of the pages, as described here. If for some reason the coralized links are don't work, you can try the orignal by changing the link from http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov.nyud.net:8090/something. .. to http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/something..., but this is so well presented they don't deserve a /.'ing, so try the cached version first.)
