Re:multiplayer id Tech 4?
Here ya go: OpenArena on id Tech 4
Just kidding! It never happened.
:P -
Re:What are the derivatives?

Re:Valve != iD I suppose
That is your parents point (unless I've missed a joke that your smiley represented). iD released the Quake 3 source code, it's been improved and modified and supports amd64. Just use your original pak files with it (they aren't included as they weren't released and are still subject to iD's copyright)
If you don't have the pak files, there is always OpenArena

Re:Other games.

Re:This is absurd
Uhhh.... OpenArena had 914 commits:

Re:Steam?
You could always play a derivative game such as the (free) Open Arena or Tremulous

Re:Alphabetical_list_of_open_source_gamesI have been playing an AWESOME open-source FPS called OpenArena. It is based on the ioquake3 engine that id3 released under GPL license.
OpenArena is a violent, sexy, multiplayer first person shooter based on the ioquake3 fork of the id tech 3 engine. It has many game types beyond deathmatch and a lot of characters. Due to violent and racy content, it may not be suitable for children under 17.
The game is absolutely free and all development is done by the community, including maps, media, and running the game servers. IMHO, it's the only game worth playing that gives me exactly what I need - less BS effects, more fast-paced action and great flexibility at customization (settings, mods, etc). Also, it has a somewhat small but very unique community of players, server admins, and of course clans + n00bs.
Direct download link for release 0.8.1: here.
Download, unzip, customize your settings, and you'll be fraggin' away! -

Why is this flamebait? See http://openarena.ws/

Right here:

Open Arena
My grandkids love Open Arena http://openarena.ws/
There are a lot of other doom/quake clones available.

Here's Some:

Freeciv is non-intuitive. Here are some others.
As much as I love playing Freeciv, I worry that it's not quite ready for people who have never played either it or some other version of Civilization. It is not at all intuitive, and it's not engaging to somebody who isn't already a known quantity at the whole getting sucked into the game thing.
How about OpenArena (a.k.a. Quake III) or Extreme Tux Racer? TetriNET/Blocktrix, a good multi-player Tetris game, is also a winner. Finally, there's a really good list of "open source" games over on Wikipedia.

Re:Battle for Wesnoth
Wesnoth is a good one.
Might also look into Teeworlds, World of Padman TORCS, Neverball and OpenArena. -
Open Source games
Open Arena totally kicks ass: http://openarena.ws/

Re:furthering the myth of expensive PCs...
I have to say that Openarena works very well on this Pentium III base PC. I reverted to this game after I bought Assassin's Creed for PC. It didn't work on my non-core duo PC. I then read the VERY VERY fine print and saw the obscene system requirements. Not to mention AC is a few years old! The nice thing with OA is that all five of us can play on our home LAN. I'll keep AC until the next upgrade

Re:What
Right, lying. Okay, well if you look at the CREDITS file for openarena. You'll see Cube's main developer and project founder right at the top as a map credit. q3dm6ish and dm4ish in OA are from him. Maybe I shouldn't have assumed they were used in Cube as well, because that may not be accurate. Well then.. OpenQuartz, I believe the void maps are from that project. The point was simply that OA does a lot of borrowing from different art styles.

Re:This is your boss speaking
I've been playing a fair bit of OpenArena:
http://openarena.ws/?about
Open sourced Quake III code with new models and textures and whatnot.
Battle for Wesnoth is a good networked turn-based strategy game, my girlfriend likes it too.
http://www.wesnoth.org/
Zombies is a fun single player game that's open source (Windows and Mac only):
http://www.codenautics.com/zombies/
For anyone who liked Tron, there's a maddeningly difficult game called Armagetron Advanced that lets you race the bikes:

There's a good list of open source games for windows here:
http://osswin.sourceforge.net/games.html
And a big list of general open source games over on wikipedia:

They're not Flash games, but they're Free. -
very nice..
that definintely looks pretty sweet.. one day I was browsing through the games in ubuntu's add/remove programs list and came across OpenArena and was thoroughly impressed.. my friends/co-workers who don't use linux or anything opensource for some weird secret reason saw me playing it one day and asked what it was.. when they heard it was free and had deathmatch capabilities, they were soon hooked and we were all doing some serious gibbing religiously once a week after the office closed.. this particular game based off the Q3 Arena engine does look pretty damn sweet for a freeware game.. i can never get tired of these damn things.. it's just fun!

Re:Open Source supporters within ATIno competitive contemporary open source 3D any more, and the quality of nVidia's binary seems to be better.
I'm not going to directly disagree with you because I'm unsure how you'd define the above. What 3D tasks do you want the card to do? Because if all you want is basic 3D acceleration good enough for e.g. TuxRacer or Open Arenaand the fun desktop effects with Compiz/Beryl then Intel has very nicely provided complete Free/OpenSource drivers for most of their integrated components (*) including the GMA X3000 integrated graphics chips. The latter chips apparently do T&L shaders and other good stuff which is actually better supported under GNU/Linux than Windows Vista.
Of course, if what you're talking about is CAD or something really GPU intensive then you may be more out of luck, but I'm interested to know exactly what that is?
* Intel are also a great bet for wireless compared to e.g. broadcom or marvell -
OpenArena
Why wasn't OpenArena mentioned? It's a Quake 3 style game, basically the same thing as the original, but with all new models, textures, sounds, everything replaced and released under the GNU GPL to make it possible to distribute a completely Free deathmatch arena game.
