Percent-shmercent. It's simple.
I don't know the details, but for me the problem is simple:
- if it's because of Opera's bug or lack of neccessary feature, it's Opera's fault and go complain to bugs.opera.com/wizard.
- if it's because website uses crappy code, broken browser-detection - get the damn website fixed
Market share, not being open-source or having lame name does not define whether browser can handle pages properly or not. Opera, in most cases, perfectly can.

Re:No...
Unless you are doing a lot of Ajax it isn't hard to support Opera. The only reason is because you are lazy.
I'll start with the disclaimer first: I work at Opera Software, with Web applications. Then I'll continue with an honest-to-god question, as I have more of an interest in understanding why people's sentiments are as they are:
Where does the misconception that Opera can't do "a lot of Ajax" come from? Because it clearly can, for instance, see Aida, the Ajax phone -- a rather massive Ajax framework and appplication running on top of Opera Platform (a runtime which provides access to certain aspects of the device, such as battery status, connectivity, message stores and such).

Re:Fair enough
While you are correct that the current release of FF does not pass the acid2 test, it is worth noting that the code to correct this is and achieve acid2 compliance is included in the current development branch of FF, and it will be operational in the next release.
The "development branch", the "alpha", the "beta" and the "release candidate" don't count. If you want to compare development branches, Opera, Konqueror, and Safari make Firefox look even more pathetic.

Why bother? MS should use Opera or Firefox instead
Maybe MS is somehow is benefiting from the endless cycles of MSIE-based spyware, viruses, and general security problems. If not, then it (and we) would be much better off if MS should drop MSIE completely. Where does MS come out ahead financially? MSIE is probably the largest single public relations problem as well as one of largest security and productivity problems that MS produces these days.
The Netscape/DOJ v MS has been over for years. MSIE wastes our time, it wastes MS time. There's simply no need for anyone, even MS, to be wasting resources with MSIE. The public certainly has no reason to let MS foist on them such low quality security hole masquerading as a useful application. Drop MSIE or let users uninstall it completely.
Firefox and Opera are what people are using anyway. Go with the flow and invest the resources that would have gone into trying to keep life in MSIE go somewhere they'll actually have a chance of doing good.

Re:Nokia N80 built-in browser is better
Nokia N80 built in browser=Opera Mobile licensed to Nokia. (Here is how Opera makes money)
http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/s60/
Of course it is a full feature browser since your phone has a operating system based on Symbian.
This is good for J2ME only devices while I used Mini for reading a simple article from Wikipedia on my S60 phone since it was compressed and faster. -
Re:Who's paying?
When you have a working real life solution in hand which is run on millions (if not hundreds of millions) mobile phones, you got something to say to companies while trying to sell these:
http://www.opera.com/products/devices/
Also it seems they got deal with Google which is also effective in this product (default search engine).
Did you ever wonder why MS sunk billions of dollars in IE even while they are at court for monopoly? That was done with evil agenda, Opera supported nothing but open web standards since it was founded.
So they got "karma" enough to type mini.opera.com in my K700i J2ME 2 phone wap browser right after reading this headline. -
Re:Anyone tried this on a Nokia 6600?
Best for Symbian S60 is the "real" Opera mobile, it is a real browser even includes flash support.

Re:Opera 3 on a Treo 700p is HORRIBLE
According to the Opera Mini forums (http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?i
d =168423) the problem has been identified and fixed. A new download might be in order. Now, if only Palm would pay IBM to make a new version of the JVM with less bugs... The current JVM is from 2004 IIRC, and riddled with bugs (hint: a Java app shouldn't be able to crash a phone). -
Re:Opera 3 on a Treo 700p is HORRIBLE
I had the same problem with my 700p, but, thanks to some help on the Opera forums, was able to find the link to Opera Mini 2, so you can "downgrade" until such time that the Palm-related issues are ironed out in Opera Mini 3.

Re:So ... What's next
Perhaps it might also bypassing the need to buy Opera, as it sounds like it's already built in.
Opera is free. -
So ... What's next
So
... what's next?
Will we be getting a news story about a Hacker who had installed the Wiis web-browser on his PC by going to http://www.opera.com/ ? -
Yep. Just update it.

Re:It's all about the interface
If you have a Java-capable phone, try Opera Mini. It's not perfect, but it blows most phones' built-in browsers out of the water.

Re:Biased much? From a quick googlin on Wii and Friend Code, it would appear that the system will use a Single code. and that your friends will use the same code for all games. see exerpt from N+
http://my.opera.com/Nplus/blog/show.dml/493596
According to Shinichiro Tamaki of Nintendo's Integrated R&D team;
Basically, we've designed it so that you can exchange information with your registered friends. I'll give an example of the kind of information that could be exchanged. Let's say someone buys a new game. When they switch on their console, a question could appear on the screen: "Do you want to let your friends know you have bought this game?" If you select "Yes", the message "X has bought the game Y!" will pop up on your friends' Message Boards. You can send messages like that from within the game, or you can make your own message to send to your friends. Actually, the example I just gave is still under discussion and has not been finalised yet. But I think it gives you an idea of the kinds of things that would be possible.

Re:Does it work well with Opera & FF ?
Does not work as well as one would hope. See http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id
= 165023 for more info. Some video gets squashed, cropped, double controls seen, both in Opera and FF. -
Re:3G = expensive
Hey, I'm in the happy Orange £4 a meg club too. The only thing I've found which assuages my impotent rages is the Opera mobile browser. - http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/.
It compresses the data before it gets to your phone, and YMMV but I get about 30-50% extra for the money. Sadly, it's so much better than the comedy Orange browser that I use it twice as often. -
Electronic version of the novel
"A Deepness in the Sky" is a excellent novel. If you like SF, it's a must read.
Those few Slashdot readers for whom buying a paper book would be impractical can get an electronic text on a pirate channel. <pirate> Launch an IRC chat client (Opera browser has one built in) and join the room bookz on Undernet, Europe. Once there, enter the line
!EBrarian Hugo 2000 Winner Novel - Vinge, Vernor - A Deepness in the Sky.rar
For simplicity I have skipped the search stage here, listing a file that would probably be accessible for some time. You could get a list of all files by typing e.g.
@seek Vinge Deepness Sky

Re:2.0 Good reasons to switch to Opera
Oddly enough, some of us haven't experienced any more instability in Firefox than Opera. Seriously, I use Firefox 2 about 80% of the time and Opera 9 about 20%, and they both crash at the same (low) rate.
Incidentally, I don't see any posts saying that the crasher isn't a flaw, and anyone who does say so is an idiot (no matter what their favorite browser is). Software should not crash, and assuming a stable environment, any crash is a flaw. There are arguments over terminology -- i.e. can a crash bug be properly considered a denial of service vulnerability or not. Even Opera devs are of the opinion that a crash bug isn't a security issue unless it (a) can execute arbitrary code or (b) can prevent you from restarting the browser. -

Re:In COBN3T AM3RNKA
Bush says it's a Goddam piece of paper
Why is this even being repeated? None of the major news outlets even covered it, the original author of the story claims there is a problem with the credibility of the so called witnesses. Namely two of the three weren't even in the building at the time they claimed to have heard it and the third as far as we know refuses to admit on way or another if it happened now.
DOUG THOMPSON, who's site is unreachable for some reason says that if it wasn't for the NSA wiretaps, he would have pulled the story completly instead of just posting questions about the sources. Non of the major news outlets (and believe me, some of them would have orgams pinning this on Bush) have found the story creditible enough to reprint. They apparently don't even think it is creditable enough to reprint some one else's story claiming this story is right or wrong. In short, the major news outlets think it is crap to begin with. Oh yes, when did that unsubstantiated story break? Oh yea, october of last year- just before an election. Go figure
Bush has done so much to criticize him for. Lets stop making shit up and use the ammunition he provides. -

Re:More options
Well, there are more options than Internet Explorer or Firefox. Opera for instance. I myself hate the fact that if you specify firefox to always open links in a new tab, and not a new instance, it still now and then opens up a new browserwindow.
Amaya is a browser made by the w3consortium. I haven't tried it yet, but a browser made by them, well I'd expect it to adhere all the standards :)
You've also still got Netscape but that browser hasn't been a serious competitor for a while now'but it's still available if someone'd like to try :)
I'm afraid I'm still an opera fanboy. Like the looks, like the usage, like that it's crossplatform, like that it had tabbed browsing back in 1999.
If I had the time I would've tried amaya and would have written something more like a review, but I'm afraid I'm quite short on time at the moment. -

Parent, you may trust it more than IE, but here's where Opera comes in. I'm not going to preach to you, but check it out.
-
Re:My impression
The ability to close and continue sessions later removes a major reason why many people kept their browsers open
If you want that out of the box and don't like v2 you should try Opera - it has been a standard there for years now. -
ie better than firefox and opera in xml/ xsl
firefox has a dtd bug in xml it hasn't fixed for years: it doesn't reference external entities
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69799
and opera flat out just doesn't support xsl formatting
http://www.opera.com/docs/specs/#xml
nevermind ie7, ie6 does both, just fine
in my book, as an xml/ xsl programmer, ie is light years ahead of firefox and opera -
Re:Hard to overcome inertia...
I just wish Opera would copy Firefoxs Adblock feature...
Firefox doesn't have an Adblock feature. You're talking about an extension, without which Firefox can't block anything, as it lacks blocking capabilities.
What Opera 9 does have is a built-in content blocker, which can block image and Flash content (ads), although it can't block Google text ads. A rudimentary (messing around with filter.ini) method of filtering was included in Opera 6.02, released on May 15th 2002 (Windows) and July 3rd 2002 (Linux). -

Re:Privacy concern
Tell me what they send to their server is actually a hash of the URL with a huge salt.
From the linked blog:
When you browse to a site you have not visited before, the browser sends a request for site information to our server. The requests contains the domain name of the site and a hash value of the URL. We don't send the full URL, but we need a fingerprint of the full URL in case you visit a dangerous page on a site that is otherwise harmless.
Presumably, it's because of the following:
The requests go over HTTP, but the replies will be signed by the server to make sure they are genuine. We prefer to send information between the browser and ourselves in plain text, so our users can inspect the data we send "home". -
