Re:What do you buy from Redhat?
If you feel that the Club is not worth the money, then that is your opinion. That does not negate the fact that it is a service.
Yes, the club is not worth the money because Mandrake has the financial sense of an autistic 11 year old hyped on crack. Their firewall server? Give me a break. Any company that begs for money shouldn't be a company, period. That is exactly what I said, right?
You are a troll for attacking Mandrake and spreading misinformation about them.
I'm not attacking Mandrake, and you are a troll for saying I did. What I'm saying is that likely my donation (That's what it is, Club Mandrake is not a service, it's a donation. Tell me what I get with my Club Mandrake subscription that is of value in a corporate environment.) doesn't do anything, because they'll shut down and it will be a bad investment. You get more service from joining "Club PA" than from Mandrake.
What Mandrake is asking is that you buy from them.
Buy what? Tech support? Sorry, most companies don't deploy linux without experiences admins. Bad tangible good to provide. Oh, my very own local access to RPMS... er... wait, I can get that off the mirrors.
Mandrake is asking that you donate money, and they provide you with virtually nothing in return other than your name on a webpage and install screens.
Sunday, Sunday, Sunday! A deal so hot you can't afford not to BUY! . Or something. -

Re:They Have TooThen why even bother with XML? Why pretend that it's some kind of an open format? Why not just stick with the proprietary format they have now?
INFIDEL! XML is newer, faster, smarter - XML is better.
Allow me to introduce you to my supervisor.

They also buy Monster Power supplies.

There are huge fucking spiders in Seattle. That sucks.

BingoThe only problem with Nintendo's games is the perception that they are "lame" because they are "for kids." I don't think this is really a big problem, though. Yes, it will alienate the image concious male teens, but they'll come back in a few years. Of course, as always, Penny-Arcade says it best.
Personally, I take some degree of offense to the implication in the article that the puzzles in Miyamoto's games are simplistic. How many people here have found every secret in a Mario game without the help of a hint guide? I'm sure a few of you have, but how long did it take? Sure, the main goal of beating Bowzer is pretty easy, but that's one of the geniuses of these games, there are different goals, of varying difficulty, so that all ages can enjoy the game.

Re:Well, I work in a major UK Game store and...
# Halo
# Colin McRae Rally 3 - Great looking rally game, not being released on PC any time soon because they want to capitalise on console sales.
I think Halo is due during the spring of 03 or something like that. From what I've heard they are going to redo some levels in order to make them more interesting.
And Colin 3 is due in January I believe. (A game which I'm eagerly anticipating.)
A third game which has gotten good reviews for consoles is Splinter Cell. It's also due for PC sometime early next year. (It's similar to MGS in gameplay.) -

This is hardly news. Or stuff that matters. Why beat a dead horse? -
Re:In other news...

PARENT IS PLAGUERISM(sp)
The problem is that most people who review things are the very people who seem to have the most hang ups about that thing. This makes their reviews worthless to the rest of us who simply enjoy watching movies or reading books. So Mr. Moviereviewerman, you think Equilibrium had a "derivative, punch-the-keyboard plot." You think it was "crude, but occasionally laugh-out-loud funny, merely for its sheer ridiculousness." You think that a movie like Equilibrium is just too far below your standards. Well I bet you twenty bucks you have a painting in your house that you bought because it matched your couch, how fucking pedestrian.
That little blurb was taken from here. Mod this lamer down, please. -
You Fucking Cut and Paste Hack
yeah, I think that Tycho said something like this yesterday, sans the Nemesis wording. He was talking about Equilibrium. At least give the author credit when stealing his work. You fucking cut and paste karma whore.

The real solution? A clean layout that showcases the ad well, delivering your ad to an audience who is actually interested, and not insulting the viewer with cheap tricks like animating nausea-inducing flashing colors. Penny Arcade has done this with its layout, and even with a smaller reader base they outperform ads from sites like IGN. To quote:
Here is another little behind the scenes look at the way advertising works on the internet. Game companies want animation. They want a fucking guy to parachute down from the top of your screen and land on the article you're trying to read. They want you to have to interact with their advertisement just so you can see the content you came for. Everyone who uses the internet knows that this kind of shit is just frustrating. Look at sites like IGN, Gamespot, or Gamespy. You can't read an article there without an animated bug crawling across your screen or some flash ad blaring shitty music. When we decided to do advertising we decided that we wouldn't ever run any kind of animated add. Some companies won't advertise with us because of it. Others, it's like pulling teeth to get a non animated ad out of them. They have this idea in their head that the only way their ads will be effective is if they are annoying as fuck.
Some of them are actually shocked when ads at PA out perform animated versions at other sites like IGN. Here we are just a little comic site and we kick their fucking ass. We tell them that if you don't insult people with shitty flash ads, they are much more likely to actually check out your game. I have never once clicked on a flash ad except to mute it or close it and I have a feeling you guys are pretty much the same. They just can't get it through their heads that people don't like to be annoyed by advertising.
I feel like we have a pretty good relationship you and I. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like we treat you guys pretty well and I think that's why you treat us so well in return. You click on our ads and buy our stuff at an unbelievable rate. Those new Wang Fu shirts sold out in one fucking day. I mean that is some crazy shit. Tycho and I just want to say thanks. We have the best job in the world and we have it because of you guys. It seems like we should hug or something now.
End quote
To me, at least, it seems like current ad companies are ramming their head against this big wall of how to make effective advertising, and their solution seems to be to just ram their head harder against that same wall. -

Interesting viewpoint.I think that format of the ad is not the problem. It's the content. Displaying a huge ad on a website that gets readers who don't care about the product won't get clicked on.
Furthermore, if you annoy your reader/viewer then they won't be inclined to find out more about the product you've got to sell. That's why animated ad, popups, flash ads, etc never, ever get clicked on. At least, not by me.
Gabe from Penny Arcade said in a recent rant/news bulliten something that sums it up nicely:

But does anyone else here feel that the kind of people you meet in places like Everquest aren't really worth interacting with?
Yes. Incidentally, Penny Arcade posted an article today regarding people in MMO games. -

Fastest. Slashdotting. Ever.
maybe they're running their websever on one of those tablets...
Incidentally, they had a demo at my school (University of Michigan) last month, and I must say that the detail captured by the touchscreen is pretty amazing. Gabe from Penny-Arcade has been using it instead of a sketchbook, and the picture speaks for itself. Now, whether it's worth $2300 is a different story.
IMHO, this is yet another technology that could be very cool and convienant, and all it needs a killer app and a critical mass in the marketplace, but it doesn't look likely -
