Seriously, let's say he WAS related to d_skin somehow.. if he really was looking to market these things, why would he waste effort on a one-time slashdot post buried on a page somewhere?
Even if he WAS in it for marketing, his point's still valid. I happen to own d_skins too, and they're a damn good product that have saved my ass more than once from well-meaning idiots handling my discs. It's sad how quickly you'd add someone to a foe list based on paranoid instincts they might be in it to sell something..
I found the d_skin protectors on sale for a pack of 30, and they have been nothing but a blessing. Anyone who is paranoid (like me) about scratching up their disks even slightly should definitely look into buying a pack.
It's a HELL of a lot cheaper to replace a scratched up d_skin protector than it is a $50 game.
Great idea.. apply open source methods to non-software organizations, and now Microsoft will go around trying to run hospitals and public schools out of business.
With pornography and sex related items being some of the most popular queries for search engines, why do they never seem to make it in to Google Zeitgeist?
CSS was meant to prevent unauthorized players from being manufactured and sold, not to prevent piracy. CSS never even comes into play if you are trying to pirate a DVD, as you just need to make a bit for bit copy, and the player you play them on will descramble it for you. DVD piracy hurts them, but not getting any royalties from manufacturers of millions upon millions of DVD players as the years go on.. that hurts a lot more.
That would signal a problem with our government, not Microsoft. Microsoft is just the symptom. As long as money is allowed to influence politics, you will always have another Microsoft.. or IBM.. or Big Oil.. etc.
Hm.. I will agree marketing is a shady world at best, in my opinion.. but it also reflects poorly upon the population in general, because they put up with it. If people were like you in general, less likely to buy things with prices like that, you can be guaranteed that pricing would change pretty quickly to something consumers were happy with.
Um.. they do the $0.99 because it works. Works on me, even, though I know in my head it's really just $1. I don't see how it's a sickness or disgusting.
Actually the kernel is based on Mach. Mach was a project at CMU, not a part of FreeBSD. Other OS that decided to use Mach are Encore's Multimax, Omron's Luna, DEC's OSF/1 for the DEC Alpha and IBM's OS/2 for the RS6000 based machines. Mach, and thus the OS X kernel, didn't come from FreeBSD.

I'm glad that someone's finally stepping in to warn the government about the perils of Free software in the context of government comissioned works. I personally love and support free software, and use it every chance I get, but using free software in a business and personal context is vastly different from using it in a governmental context. I, for one, don't want other countries benefitting off of what my tax dollars go to fund. You also have issues such as exposure of internal workings of government systems that should be kept private, not to mention issues of security, as chances are in most cases the government agencies that use the software will not update their binaries if the source gets patched. I am sure other fellow/.ers can list more reasons below.. but I for one am perfectly fine with governments keeping their internal software solutions a secret.
That would seem to mean that are totally giving up on hardware with proprietary hacks.
I am as happy as the next guy to see Apple supporting more standard interfaces, but I do have to point out MagSafe and the iPod Dock Connector..

Amen, brother.

I suppose that name could have a double meaning besides the release date too, heh. :)
So.. this must be how my girlfriend feels when I.. uh.. arrive ahead of schedule. :|

mozilla.org doesn't block referrers from Slashdot. You are thinking of bugzilla.mozilla.org.

Ah, ok. My bad then.

When do we get the focused sound waves beamed directly into our head?
:)
Oh, that? You can pick that up right here.
Maybe I should trademark the letter 'E'.

Actually, a properly formatted search gets you 36,500 results for Monty Python and spam.
Yeah.. I seem to run across that problem alot in many browsers.. it's unfortunate.
Of course, you, diligent Slashdot reader, have read about many of these already.
Oh man.. thanks Taco. I needed a good laugh. Pfft.. he actually thinks we read the articles.. hehe!

Never look for a job in the computer industry, if you don't understand the benefit of working on projects like these just because you can.
What is Open Source?
Open Source is patient. Open Source is kind. It does not envy.
It does not boast, it is not proud
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered
It keeps no record of wrongs
Open Source does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres
the G5 doesn't exist yet (ie, I can't purchase it).
Gosh, that's funny, because I can.
Modding then posting after you mod in the same story undos any moderation you've done in that story... 'least, it used to.
