That's a strange way of saying someone bought them. You can't sell something unless it's any good. Have you ever sold anything APK? LOL!
These are real businesses: Sun Microsystems, DEC, Sinclair Research, CA, BellSouth. Know what they have in common? People wanted to buy them and paid big $$$. Some other businesses? Enron. The Dumont Network. APKWare LLC. Anyone bought them? No, because those businesses weren't worth buying.

And you admit CA's security department was good enough that it was BOUGHT by other companies, like a long line of VALUABLE corporations like Sun Microsystems, Sinclair Research, BellSouth, DEC, etc, etc. Has anyone tried to buy APKWare LLC? P.S => Visual BASIC 3? ROFL!!
P.P.S => For the "trolls" Big O is a measure of complexity, whereby the length of time, measured in cycles, of a looped operation is compared to the amount of data being processed. For example, a hash lookup is O(1), a search through a list is O(N) (because the number of operations is proportional, on average, to the number of items), and a bubblesort is O(n!) (I think, I can't remember, it's been a while since I did this.) The reason it's relevant to a hosts file generator is that if you use the wrong algorithms, you'll find that the length of time it takes to process your initial hosts list will increase exponentially, or worse, as you add more hosts.
P.P.P.S => That wasn't really for the "trolls", that was for you APK. I thought you might need it explaining to you.

Why isn't "ping" listed thus? It could issue a "ping of death".
No, it can't. Do you even know what the "ping of death" is?
Why isn't Spybot Search & Destroy?? It alters a HOSTS file.
Because there's nothing wrong with software modifying the HOSTS file per-se, especially in the context of actually trying to remove malware.
Your app got blacklisted because it hid running applications. And who blacklisted it? Amongst others:
CA - listed as "Any tool that might be used in planning an attack on a system, developing tools for such an attack, or performing it."

APK 24/7
It may be that the reason for APK's existence is to serve as a warning to others.
Ever done anything bad, completely unintentionally? Alexander Peter Kowalski fits the bill. He's the author of a tool, apkapp2backgrounddaemonprocessengine, considered malware by a large number of anti-malware companies and organizations. He probably wrote it in good faith, but the reality is that it's a product that can be used easily and effectively to hide spyware on a computer. So many anti-malware organizations have flagged it as majorly dangerous.

See here for an example of Kowalski going about dealing with negative material on the Internets in entirely the wrong way.
So if you read material by APK, just remember that while he apparently has a lot of degrees in computer something or other, he's not terribly smart when it comes to the whole forward thinking thing.

Spyware No-More ("Threat risk: High risk", "Advice: Remove This is a very high risk threat and should be removed immediately as to prevent harm to your computer and / or to protect your privacy")Mr Kowalski, or his admirer, got upset because someone had the audacity to link to a threat describing Kowalski's attempts to remove some embarrassing comments posted under his name. Rather than deal with it maturely, this person has been attempting to stalk said poster and those who pointed out Kowalski wasn't doing himself any favors.
So if you see these comments posted as replies to clone, squiggleslash, or Tom, now you know why they're appearing. And if you feel like joining in, making it clear to Mr Kowalski that spamming, sliming, and stalking are unacceptable, well, come on in, the water's lovely!

For those new to this, the troll is someone claiming to be a defender of a certain Alexander Peter Kowalski, the author of a tool, apkapp2backgrounddaemonprocessengine, generally considered malware by a large number of anti-malware companies and organizations.

Spyware No-More [spynomore.com] ("Threat risk: High risk", "Advice: Remove This is a very high risk threat and should be removed immediately as to prevent harm to your computer and / or to protect your privacy")There is one person involved in this conversation who has written software identified as "malware" by the security community. That person is the one promoting the idea of using a HOSTS file to block malware. That same person says that even after using HOSTS the way they claim, they're getting hit by two viruses a month, two more than the vast majority of Windows users.
Your gall is astonishing.

Re:tomhudson = malscripted site owner?
No, a good reason for putting down HOSTS as a solution to anything is when the person proposing it as a "solution" admits it doesn't work by admitting that using the scheme they get two viruses a month, which is two more than the vast majority of Windows users.
I suspect the real reason why you're proposing HOSTS is because you're desperate to prevent people giving money to the anti-malware companies. And why would that be?

Re:Anyone can mod themselves up with alternate log
LOL, very, VERY lofty claims for someone who writes SPYWARE!
Yes, that’s right, as quoted on MANY sources:

Re:Labels competitors tools as spyware too.Stop spreading FUD. MSAS clearly states that the app has legitimate uses. It only alerts the user to it's presence, in case they or their admin hasn't installed it.
Did you read the article I linked to?
According to Romanian anti-virus firm BitDefender, the first beta version of Microsoft's software wrongly detects a BitDefender ScanOnline object as being a piece of spyware called "Brilliant Digital".
It labels it as Brilliant Digital - a tracking cookie. MSAS does not state the app has legitimate uses. -
There's "game journalism"?When "Lucky, the magazine about shopping" first came out, the comment was "You mean there are magazines that aren't about shopping?" Game magazines started at that level and went down from there.
At the bottom is GameSpy, which is now a malware distributor.
"Next Generation" was worth reading, in its day.

Don't forget one of the best...
Pest Patrol belongs on this list, as in my experience it beats out Adaware and SpySweeper. It's not shareware but definitely worth the $40 I paid for it. -
Check Point Interspect and PestPatrol Corporate
I recently did an evaluation of PestPatrol Corporate Edition 5.0, which runs in a similar fashion to Symantec's Corporate Antivirus. The software is server based, connects to PestPatrol for spyware removal updates, and can run a daily scan of hard drives to remove spyware. The only thing that is actually installed on the workstations is a small app that performs the actual scans. It's not that expensive either, I think it was about $2k for a 250 user license. Check it out at http://www.pestpatrol.com/Products/PestPatrolcE/
Check Point's Interspect hardware is really interesting. It's a piece of hardware that plugs into your network backbone and protects the network from spyware, Trojans, worms, etc. It doesn't actually remove anything, but if it detects an infected computer on the network, it can either prevent that computer from accessing resources on the network, or if need be, it can actually disable that nodes port on the switch that it's plugged in to. It does a lot more too, and I can't wait to get an eval of it. Check it out here: http://www.checkpoint.com/products/interspect/inde x.html/
Hope this helps... -

Pest Patrol
Well, I would normally recommend Pest Patrol. They're located across the hall from me, I've had lunch with their CEO and co-founder, and it's an all around great product with some talented people behind it.
Oh wait...CA bought them, the new v5 sucks, and everyone who worked hard to make it great is about to lose their job.
