Micro$oft: Master of DeceptionI utterly despise Microsoft.
To give you an idea of how deceptive Microsoft is, I direct your attention to the recent demand, by Bill Gates, that the American government raise the cap on H-1B workers. Gates claims that there is an insufficient number of Americans who are qualified for the job of "programmer".
Professor Matloff of the University of California at Davis exploded this deception. He noted that Microsoft hires only 4% of applicants. Further, of the 50 applicants from MIT last year, only 1 was offered a job to work at Microsoft.
Frankly, I do not give a damn about Microsoft. Let us unite behind Linux and the open source movement. As a matter of principle, I refuse to use Internet Explore or Windows XP.

China is WorseThe Chinese take a two-pronged approach to stealing American military secrets. The main approach is using their network of Taiwanese immigrants in the USA. Of the people arrested for stealing American military secrets to give to Beijing, the majority are Taiwanese immigrants.
The second approach is to hack into the computers of American national laboratories. Here, Taiwanese hackers often help Beijing. Of course, there are also hackers that hail directly from mainland China.

Curtains for AOLThe fundamental question is "What does AOL provide over and above Yahoo! and Google?"
The answer is "almost nothing". Allow me to explain.
The market has two main options: (1) ISP provider and Google or Yahoo! as the launching point of your WWW experience or (2) ISP provider and AOL as the launching point of your WWW experience. Option #1 costs about $30 with DSL and $20 with dialup. Option #2 costs about $40 with DSL and $20 with dialup. In the dialup case, AOL provides the dialup.
The trouble here is that option #2 provides no significant value over option #1. If you use DSL, you must pay an additional fee to get access to the AOL portal. Yet, what does AOL provide over Google or Yahoo!? Almost nothing.
As long as Google and Yahoo! continue to innovate and hire cheap H-1B engineers (while hundreds of thousands of American engineers remain unemployed), both Google and Yahoo! will destroy AOL.
The future for America's (in every sense of the word, including a preference to hire American engineers) portal will be bleak.

NOT FUNNY: Phone Technology & Chinese MilitarThe technology that goes into cellular phones is the same technology used by the Western militaries for terrestrial-to-satellite communication. Such technology is vitality to the security of the West.
We must ensure that that this new advance (i.e. video via cellular phone) in phone technology does not fall into the hands of the Chinese. Beijing has an aggressive program to modernize its military communications system.

Deciphering Technology and the Chinese Military
SLAC should label its deciphering technology "top secret". This technology might be useful to the Chinese military, which is aggressively trying to upgrade its military know-how.

Beware Taiwanese CompaniesWe must proceed with caution because both Ralink Tech and RealTek are Taiwanese companies. Taiwanese companies (e.g. Ecoma Enterprise, Inc.) have assisted rogue nations (e.g. Iran) in improving their weapons aimed at the United States of America.
The OpenBSD folks must ensure that all Taiwanese code is carefully examined for Trojan horses and other malware that the Taiwanese deliberately planted. The best thing to do is to simply ban the use of Taiwanese code.
As well, the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition regularly assesses computer companies to determine whether they have good environment policies and respect for workers' rights. Chinese companies (including those in Taiwan) consistently fail on both counts. Why should we condone this sort of behavior by working with the Taiwanese?
Like the Chinese, the Taiwanese have long supported the occupation of Tibet.
Our conscience requires us to reciprocate by banning the Taiwanese from participation in the Open Source movement.

Try a Green SolutionThe Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition regularly assesses computer companies to determine whether they have good environment policies and respect for workers' rights. Chinese companies (including those in Taiwan) consistently fail on both counts.
Our conscience requires us to avoid buying Chinese computers and other Chinese products. As for the Linux clusters, here is one approach to creating a green clustered computer which is fast but may not be the fastest machine. We willingly sacrifice a little bit of speed in order to promote the environment and workers rights.
Buy 16 Sony desktops, of which many are actually assembled in the United States of America. Alternatively, buy 16 Fujitsu or Toshiba desktops. Sony, Fujitsu, and Toshiba are committed to protecting the environment. Another alternative is to buy 16 Siemens-Nixdorf desktop.
Then, get a copy of Linux and Beowulf, and presto (!), you have a supercomputer in your office. The total cost should run you about $10,000.

Robotic Technology and the Chinese MilitaryStanford University and DARPA should designate this contest (of robotic technology) as "top secret". This technology would be a boon for the Chinese military, which has been aggressively trying to create a robotic soldier.
The Chinese aim to use robots to project the Chinese cruelty to all corners of the globe.

Not surprisingly, Indonesia also has a high piracy rate. Indonesia does have a large Chinese population and is heavily influenced by Chinese culture.

China in SW II just finished watching "Star Wars I" as a rerun on TV. What is unusual about this movie, besides the fact that the dialogue and acting are atrociously done, is that the 2 main villains speak with English that has a Chinese accent. If you do not believe me, then listen carefully to the English spoken by people from Hong Kong or Guangdong, China.
Lucas should explore this theme further by framing SW VII, VIII, and IX as a metaphor on the struggle between Tibet and China. The rescuers will be the Australians. They will be the rebel force.
The leader of this band is the daughter of Princess Leia.

Not Funny: Western Technology & Chinese MilitThe Chinese military is engaged in an agressive campaign to collect vital information about critical Western technologies. The robotic technology being showcased at this conference in Europe would help the Chinese in their plans to build mechanized soldiers for occupying foreign lands and torturing the natives.
The Chinese are currently torturing hundreds of Tibetans and Uighurs.

Caution: Chinese Weaponization of SpaceWe must proceed with caution by ceasing these speed-of-light simulations. The Chinese would surely use them to advance their space-weaponization program.
Note that the Chinese space program is completely under the auspices of the Chinese department of war. By contrast, in the USA, NASA is an entirely civilian effort.
-
Chinese Military vs. NASAWe had best keep NASA's plans totally secret. The Chinese have an aggressive program to weaponize space and will attempt to glean any technological tidbit out of NASA's future space plans.
I totally support the civilian space effort of NASA, but we must be wary of the Chinese military. Beijing's space program is an exclusively military effort. China has no civilian space program.

Zhou Enlai and Nixon: All Over AgainThis collaboration between Microsoft reminds me of the meeting between President Nixon of the USA and President Zhou Enlai of the People's Republic of China in 1972. Here, McNealy would be Zhou since McNealy is a major promoter of hiring Chinese (which includes Taiwanese) H-1Bs, and Ballmer would be Nixon since Ballmer never overlooks at opportunity to take a Machiavellian stab at a competitor.
The big loser in this nefarious collaboration is the consumer.

Suggestion for a Story LineBattleStar Galactica (BG) is succeeding due to the excellent writers that the show employs. An example of really bad writing is the final two episodes of "Enterprise", which I regrettably saw.
If the producers of BG expect to maintain their momentum, they should occasionally embed references to issues confronting mankind today. The original "Star Trek" did so and became hugely popular even though the special effects were crappy.
One suggestion for a good story line is to explore the issue of Tibet, which Beijing is brutally occupying.

How about the Benefit to Society? The assumption is that Star Wars will only cost society because people are taking a sick day. Has anyone thought that, just maybe, Star Wars contributes value to society? You ask, "How?".
Well, here's how. Star Wars IV taught good values. Star Wars VI taught that good can triumph over evil and that people are stronger when they do not give into hate. Star Wars' moral values are so close to Tibetan Buddhism that one wonders whether the correspondence is a mere coincidence.
"Right again, you are. Together defeat China, we will. At hand is the day of liberation for Tibet!" exclaims Yoda.
-
Google: Horrible Corporate CitizenryGoogle is an example of horrible corporate citizenry. Google employs a large number of H-1B workers from China. Since most of them support the policies of Beijing, Google is merely reflecting its workforce when its management supports the policies of Beijing.
The management of Google has never condemned the Chinese atrocities against the Tibetans despite the fact that one of Google's founders is the son of a Russian immigrant who had fled Soviet tyranny. Anyone smell a hypocrite here?
-
"It is just as I have forseen 'it'."Back on May 1, I wrote an article on SlashDot, and in the article, I predicted that "Star Wars III" would be a successful. You laughed, but I was right.
"Star Wars III" is really a metaphor about the evil of today. The Chinese have tortured and murdered hundreds of Tibetans and Uighurs. Who will save them? The Western rebels: USA, Japan, etc. The Westerners are a minority on the planet, but they are committed to their cause of freedom and justice.
"Great truth, you speak. Rise again to fight tyranny, the West shall!" exclaims Yoda.
"At the opening on May 18, see you. A pro-Tibet shirt, you must wear. A Tibetan monk, my teacher was!" exalts Yoda.

Not Funny: Stem Cells and Medical ExperimentsWe must ensure that Chinese nationals are banned from accessing the new stem-cell headquarter in San Francisco. Beijing currently funds human medical experiments on prisoners. Access to the technology of the stem-cell research center will enable the Chinese to perform ghastly experiments in cloning and creating human-animal hybrids.
In fact, Slashdot has reported on a rabbit-human hybrid created in a Beijing laboratory. Buddha help us when the Chinese control the world.

Spintronics and the Chinese Threat
We Americans should keep this technology secret. It could prove a boon to military communications. If the Chinese had access to this technology, they would quickly integrate it into their space-born weapons systems.
-
Rape of TibetLet's not be so gung ho about how the Chinese are embracing high technology. Being a high-quality society requires much more than technology.
A key element of Western society, the finest in the world, is compassion. Consider what the Chinese are doing in Tibet. They are raping and killing women and children. This barbarism approaches the Nazi medical experiments of World War II.
-
"Star Wars III" vs. "Enterprise"The failure of "Enterprise" is not due to the fact that "Star Trek" re-runs are competing against it. Given the option of watching a good episode of a "Star Trek" re-run and a good episode of a new "Star Trek" show, most people would prefer the latter. Since they have already seen the re-run, they would prefer to see something new.
The problem here is that most episodes of "Enterprise" suck. The writing, the directing, and the acting is horrible.
Here is proof of the accuracy of my analysis. Consider "Star Wars". You could argue that our society has been saturated by "Star Wars" themes: action figures, late night jokes, the 2 sucky pre-quels, etc. Yet, why will "Star Wars III" rival the the popularity of "Star Wars IV", "V", and "VI"? Good writing, directing, and acting is the answer.
"Right, you are! At the opening in May, see you!" exclaims Yoda.
For the "Enterprise" finale, the writers should use the situation in Tibet as the basis for a story. That would be an excellent basis for a story, which just might bring back some disenchanted fans.
"May the force be with you!"

Chinese Militarization of SpaceThis entire deep-space experiment should be designated "top secret" in order to prevent its results from being used by the Chinese. Aiming a space probe at a comet is similar to aiming a projectile at an incoming nuclear-tipped missile. If you can accomplish the first task, then you are a short step away from accomplishing the second task.
The Chinese are aggressively attempting to weaponize space. One of their projects is implementing a space-based anti-ICBM system.
Beware of the Chinese ogre.

Re:Military Payloads Need Reliability: Titan Deliv
especially given the emerging threat from China.
While (1) torture is certainly a bad thing and (2) China may well be considered a thread to the US, I don't really see how torture in China is a threat to the US.Maybe that's just me...
-
Military Payloads Need Reliability: Titan DeliversRockets are similar to cars. The choice is between a car that is in the 4th year of its production run and a car that has been redesigned new from the ground up. Completely new cars tend to have numerous problems, which are fed back to the engineers who then make the necessary modifications for next year's production run.
Even Hondas suffer from this problem. If I must have the most reliable vehicle, I would choose a Civic model in its last year of production over a brand new, completely redesigned Civic.
Since the Titans have been in use for a long time, the engineers have already fixed any outstanding, serious problems. The Titan is a reliable workhorse and should be the delivery vehicle for a military payload. Such payloads are vital to the national security of the United States, and we absolutely must avoid mishaps, especially given the emerging threat from China.

A Word to the WiseIn most states, companies can eavesdrop on e-mail, but they cannot eavesdrop on phone conversations. Never send personal information via e-mail from your company unless you get a thrill over the CEO reading about your sexual exploits from last night.
Only a non-Western country like China would permit a broad range of eavesdropping.

Not Funny: Deep Impact and Chinese Weapons
After the "Deep Impact" experiment, NASA should issue a brief press release and then designate all the experiments' findings as "top secret". The measurements from the experiment would be a boon to Beijing, for the data could be used to improve the precision of guided missiles. The Chinese want to improve their missiles so that they can more easily hit American or Japanese targets.

Freedom, Internet, Tibet, & Chinese TyrannyThe key here is "technological loophole". Most people are technological dunces and would not know how to bypass filters in places like China.
There are techniques by which anyone can bypass government control of the Internet. Consider the following. A Tibetan uses a cell phone to call into an internet service provider (ISP) in Australia. Radio Free Asia subsidizes all such accounts so that they are essentially free.
The cell phone then becomes a 56K modem. It is not fast but will do the job. The Tibetan can then freely and daily e-mail reports about Chinese brutality in and around Tibet. Moreoever, the Tibetan can receive factual information about the outside world. After all, both CNN and FoxNews have web sites.
-
Phishing & Chinese Threat to the WestIf we traced all these phishing schemes back to the country of origin, then we would soon discover that most of them originate in China, which includes Taiwan province and Hong Kong.
The result would not be surprising because China is the source of most of the ID numbers of stolen credit cards. Chinese gangs, backed by Beijing, maintain a profitable trade in stolen credit cards. The victims are usually Westerners.
-
Internet & Chinese HackersThe information-technology (IT) infrastructure of the United States is susceptible to attacks by Chinese hackers sponsored by the government of the People's Republic of China. In the past, Chinese hackers have attacked and defaced the web sites of the CIA, Foreign Ministry of Japan, etc.
During a critical moment when the American navy is thwarting the Chinese invasion of Australia, the Pentagon may rely on the Internet to send critical information to an undisclosed location in Japan. The Chinese would likely attempt to destroy the communications links: radio, satellite, fiber-optic, etc. All these links could be an integral part of the Internet.
That critical information to Japan may contain the exact time when the Japanese air force launches operation VA ("Victory in Asia") by beginning the bombardment of Beijing. Only such force will compel the Chinese to free Tibet and to stop the invasion of Australia.

Not Funny: Nanotechnology & Chinese TerrorThis nanobiotechnology has prime use in military applications: e.g., detecting antrax. We in the West would do well to not publish any papers about this technology in order to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Chinese.
Beijing has been working on biological and chemical weapons for the last 10 years. Nanobiotechnology would only add to the Chinese arsenal.
Note that Western nations (including Russia) terminated their biological and chemical weapons programs more than 20 years ago.

Not Funny: Millipede & Chinese Spy SatellitesThe millpede technology will be a boon for data storage of photos from spy satellites. Over the last 3 decades, American spy satellites have generated trillions of bytes of photos that require storage. Millipede is the perfect technology for handling such volumes of storage
We should classify millipede as a technology that is vital to national secure and should ban Chinese nationals from working on such projects. The Chinese would surely use such technology for nefarious purposes.

Infrared Technology and the Chinese ThreatLet's keep this infrared technology for webcams under wraps. The technology has useful military applications (e.g. night vision), and the Chinese would surely use the technology against Americans in any war.
Also, the Chinese could use this technology in creating better night-vision goggles. The People's Liberation Army would use such goggles to hunt down and kill Tibetans who are hiding under the cover of the night.

Internet Technology and China: the ThreatHopefully, these Japanese companies have taken into consideration the threat that China poses to the world and have taken the necessary steps to safeguard this new Internet technology. It could be handy in the event of a war initiated by the Chinese. For example, suppose that the Chinese sabotage the fiber-optic cables in Japan. The Japanese could then send their data traffic across the power lines.
The Internet was originally intended to be a communications network that the American Department of Defense (DOD) would use in the event that the Russians destroyed a significant part of the military communications network. I suspect that the DOD will find this new Japanese technology to be quite interesting.
Fortunately, the Japanese developed the technology before the Chinese. So, the Western world is safe -- for now.
