Unanticipated categories of service
Now the next question is what about something for which there isn't a system support. Like a new compression algorithm. In the case the whole thing works the other way around. The new compression algorithm dynamic code installs as an extension to Finder, that is it grants Finder permission to use it as a way to compress. Then the application makes a request to Finder to use that compression algorithm.
So what about things other than compression? Does Spotlight's API allow a search program to add specific ways to specify what sort of "needle" to search for, such as regular expressions or language-specific stemming or synonym resolution mechanisms? Does Spotlight's API allow a search program to add support for searching text in specific file formats? Windows, in fact, is going the other way: Windows 8 flat out removed the concept of an "indexing service" from the operating system.
You mentioned trusted wrapper programs for archiving and search. How would an application add more categories of service that the operating system's publisher hadn't thought of, such as file comparison, the sort of continuous background file synchronization that happens using something like Dropbox, and the sort of file synchronization that happens using version control software?

Re:Who?
Ben Goldacre of Bad Science fame uses Posterous. In his words it's for "things that are too long to post on twitter and not clever enough to post on his main blog".
So Twitter aquiring and then closing it (presumable with the thought that "Oh, you don't need Posterous any more -- just use Twitter!") becomes a little bit ironic to me, as the person I know who uses Posterous uses it explicitly because Twitter doesn't work for his purposes.

Re:The obvious question here....
This makes for good reading http://lawgeeknz.posterous.com/nzs-copyright-proposal-guilty-until-you-prove
The form of an infringement notice is to be prescribed by regulation. However, the fact that the form is correctly completed is not relevant to the issue of whether or not there has been copyright infringement. So that does not explain why the mere filing of a notice should be conclusive evidence.
Merely CORRECTLY filling out a complaint notice, is deemed sufficient evidence that an offense occurred if it goes to a tribunal
To put it another way, if someone accused me of downloading X song on Y day, and i didn't, i still have yet to find anyone who can show me a way to prove i didn't
Example:"Sir, you are accused of downloading one mp3 titled 'Justin Bieber - Baby', please prove you didn't if you wish to defend yourself"
Um....

Re:Obama knows how to play politics if anything.
Second, there's already a ready group to cover student loan rates, former students with debt. No need to fund student loans when that's already covered.
Sure, that might work if tuition costs were not increasing so quickly. Tuition fees have gone up by a factor of 10 over the past 30 years! Your government needs to step in and put legal caps on tuition fees as they have in the UK; only then can you hope to make it self-sustaining.

The synonym problem
What laptop running Windows is competitive in speed, weight, and battery life with a MacBook Air and substantially cheaper?
--
...which synonym for the subject? If you followed the advice of your sig you'd have your answer.
The point of my sig is that not all web pages use the same term to refer to a given concept, which makes it more difficult to search for web pages that mention the concept. For example, "less expensive" won't match "lower price" or "cheaper". Which Google query would turn up relevant results?

Re:The results still suck
Yes, Google needs competition but Bing isn't it. Sad for MS but true.
At this point there won't be anyone else than can compete with Google either. Now a days search engines rely heavily on datamining and especially keyword data supplied by users when searching. It's also the reason why Google datamines so much. With their market share they get significantly more data than Bing, especially long tail keywords and keywords people search less often.
Google also relies on looking which result users choose and if they return back from that site. If user chooses a particular search, it means the user thinks it's relevant and could be good. But if he quickly returns back from the site, it means he didn't find the information he was looking for from that results. That is also data that Google gets much more just because they have so much more users.
So all in all, if it wasn't for Microsoft, we would only have Google. No one else can compete with them at this point. Interestingly, Google is failing in Russia, China and South Korea where local companies got the market share before Google, and they can't really do much about it. Google tried to play dirty tricks in Russia by disabling the initial search engine choice dialog and defaulting to Google instead of Yandex, but they were quickly called of it and had to stop that practice.

Google is not always my friend
There's no reason why a programmer can't learn to do his own marketing. It's not hard it just requires some work.
I'm willing to do work to learn marketing, graphics, or UI design. Where should I start? Does it require going back to college?
Google is your friend
Not always. Some concepts can be expressed using numerous distinct words. If I type a word into a search engine, the results will have those documents that contain the word, not documents that contain synonyms for that word. This phenomenon goes by "synonym problem" and numerous other names.
But you've established in previous posts that you can't afford a Mac
I can afford a Mac, but not everybody else can out of disposable income. Is it considered fallacious to argue a position that affects people other than myself?

I figure it will be 2040 before C++ removes the ass-backwards compatibility of 'long long', 'short', 'long double', etc. nonsense. Re:oh and this is where i make fun of lolbertarian
Sega pulled an earlier 3D product in the mid 90s because problems were observed in kids who used the device frequently. Took me forever to find links right now -- it used to be easy to pull up the documents about this on Google, but as of today, all the keywords point at today's announcement. This is the problem with relying upon Google to remember things for me.
:-)But I did find one article about it finally:
Search within this article for "Sega"
http://markpesce.posterous.com/split-screen-how-safe-is-3d-tv-screen-play-diThere are a number of write ups about Sega's experience, and that experience is what is spawning a lot of the concern from Sony and Nintendo.
