I'll tell you, though, selling Microsoft projects is MUCH easier than selling Linux projects. The average non-technical business person has some exposure to MS and Windows. "Linux.. isn't that software that was written by a bunch of non-professional hobbists and Chinese Hackers in their spare time, and there's no support for it? What if something goes wrong? We're trying to run a mission critical application here, not some hobby system!"

And you pointed out that Linux is supported by such fly-by-night operations as IBM, Novell, Hewlett-Packard, and RedHat, right?

I doubt it. Not only have the openly sent notifications for RHEL errata, but they also provide the SRPMs in accordance with the GPL.

This is a major difference. Red Hat did not announce EOL for their 7.x and 8 versions until well after they were released. In other words, those installing 7.x when new really did not know when support would end. Many of us ASSuMEd that they would follow historical patterns and continue to receive updates for at least 2 years.

And, Red Hat 7.3 is being supported for 19 months. Not quite your 2 years, but close.

Actually, I did that - got Nvidia drivers runnning on XP in under 4 hours. That was for work.

I then installed Fedora Core 1 on another partition, got it all running and happy, and then downloaded the 2.6.0 kernel source and went to town. NVidia drivers and all. It was a riot.

Some things in life are needlessly fucking complicated and obscure - and a hell of a lot fun figuring out how to make them work. For everything else there's Windows.

Well, I know that COFF & ECOFF are pretty well known by now, COFF having been created for SVR3 to extend and replace a.out and support shared libraries but also having been used and extended by Microsoft since NT. According to this message, the format can be found in the programmer's reference manuals for SVR3. The a.out format debuted with UNIX V7.

Both are extremely well known formats, and SCO's claim pretty much has to be direct copying, because there's no way that a reimplementation could be a violation to two well-known, publicly published formats. Humorously enough, Caldera/SCO itself publishes the definitions of both COFF and ELF.

While I'm pretty sure you can copyright an interface like this, I'm positive that implementing code based on a published description (and not published source code) is not in and of itself a copyright violation, especially due to the importance that recent copyright laws have given to interoperability. Like I said, it's safe to bet that either SCO is either claiming direct copying (which could be shown to be false if it is) or they're once again invoking Chewbacca defense-like logic in defending their case like they have been in their claims about the GPL being against US copyright law.

And what's this about "no redhat desktop"? The distros that target corporate environments (except for SuSE) use Gnome. Wich is where UserLinux wants to fit in.

Redhat/Fedora has announced that the next Fedora release will ship with 2.6.

There is alrady an rpm in their development directory. But why didn't they sign it?

In related news, Redhat/Fedora has announced that the next Fedora release will ship with 2.6. They've called it a "stop-ship" feature :) Fedora Core 2 is tentatively scheduled to be released in April 04.

I just spent the last 3 days trying to get the SELinux extensions, courtesy of the NSA installed on a Fedora Core 1 system.

I eventually gave up. However, the SELinux extensions were merged into the 2.6 kernel and it's apparently the plan of Fedora/Red Hat to put it into Fedora Core 2 sometime later this spring.

I, for one, can't wait.

Mandrake is a fine distro, but every time I tried I found some little problems, submited a bug report and hopped on the next version these problems would be solved. They were, but new problems appeared. But, if you don't want to pay US$ 25 for a single system and want a vibrant community that will help you, Mandrake is the way to go. Red Hat is loosing momentum on the free software community, and Mandrake is atracting a lot of refugees.

That would be the same 'totally rock-solid' Debian project which was rooted via do_bkr() - a result found in the 'thoroughly tested' Linux kernel?

Regular filesystems on flash memory is probably not a sterling idea due to a limited number of writecycles available. I'm not sure of the merits of using FAT on flash memory other than the fact that it's widely supported (Maybe not for much longer. :-P). Still there is a filesystem available called jffs2 that is designed for flash. Support for reading jffs2 on the other desktop platforms is probably unlikely with GPL phobia and all :)

And stop bitching. It's not like RedHat is the only game in town. There's SuSE (now backed by Novell, and you can hardly say they're minor) and for the do-it-yourselfer, there's Debian, Gentoo, Slack, and even Fedora.

Fedora Core supports this - you can install via VNC. you can set a password, and you can configure it to connect to a listening VNC Viewer.

You only need the monitor to kick off the install and configure your NIC.

People all too quickly forget that it wasn't pragmatism that made the community what it is. It wasn't paying attention to pragmatism that got us an entirely Free Software operating system. It's only because that system is so remarkably useful that people think they can afford to throw away the idealistic principles of software freedom in favor of the self-contradictory goal of pragmatism.

The Free Software Foundation wrote about this self-contradiction in this essay. In short, when people have proprietary code that works better than the Open Source alternative, the Open Source movement offers users no reason to reject the proprietary program. By contrast, the Free Software movement competes on something proprietary programs can never provide--software freedom--therefore Free Software always comes out ahead in a head-to-head comparison, even if it is less practical (which, sometimes, it is).

I recently wrote about this on the Fedora Core user's mailing list hosted by Red Hat. I think what we need to do is have an easy-to-use website that helps people find hardware that works completely with Free Software (all kinds of hardware). Right now, this means recommending ATI video cards (along with a bunch of other video cards) instead of NVidia's hardware. I think once we get organized and have a site that lets a user easily construct a shopping list (even finding supportive online dealers where users can buy what they need right from the site), some manufacturers will be proud to be on the list and continue to help us. Other manufacturers will want to get on the list and be pressured to help us by shipping specs and/or Free Software drivers. Is there anything like this already? We need to stop helping organizations that hurt us.

Here is the clear comparison of various RedHat options. It seems you're getting binaries only for 349 with no dedicated tech support.

When I read about the December EOL for RH7.x (currently in use on our two large DNS & DHCP boxes) I was a bit miffed - some slightly more advanced notification would have been nice through the usual Red Hat channels.

Maybe it's what was needed for JFFS2 to see widespread use. Currently it's used in many embedded Linux systems, as a root filesystem. But using it as an exchange filesystem (e.g. on a new flahscard format) would rock - JFFS2 features compression, journalling, wear levelling, and is generally modern an well working.

You might be more interested in using Fedora than paying 25 bucks a month for RHEW. It's what I use and it seems just as stable as any of those other linux distros out there (debian, slackware, etc.) Not to mention it is more on the bleeding edge than Red Hat's enterprise products, making it ideal for desktop use. Sure, a new version comes out every 6 months, but the upgrade is free!

RHEL is only for servers and workstations that perform *mission critical* tasks and have specialized requirements.

For other institutions considering implementing their own "opencourseware" there are several open-source CMS options. At this point, MIT OCW is monitoring six: Zope, Red Hat, Midgard, OpenACS, OpenCMS, and Bricolage. By 2004, most experts agree that one CMS provider will become the clear, open-source leader in this industry sector. MIT OCW will track the progress of key open-source CMS providers during this accelerated maturation. This will contribute to MIT being able to share its experience and understanding of these CMS options with other institutions. The hope is that utilization of open-source model CMS products could lead to less expensive implementations of opencoursewares on other campuses.
