And that's precisely why Fedora is useless as a replacement for either the Red Hat Professional or Standard distributions.

It's not meant to be a replacement for them. Go read the goals over at the Fedora home page. This was my point - comparing it with other things its not is pointless. I get home every week in a Saab 340, and it goes much faster than my friend's Saab 3000. Do you draw the conclusion that if you want a Saab, you should get a 340?

The 340 is a turboprop aircraft. The 3000 is a (albeit turbocharged ;) car.

I don't think average users are meant to like Fedora. Not yet, anyway. Of course, we can debate till the bovines arrive back at their humble abodes the exact definition of an "average" user and get nowhere. Instead, lets take a step back and look at the issue of advocating Linux to your company. AFAIC there are simply 2 factors which matter when deciding what Linux setup to use - the business goals, and the experience of the IT guys who have to administer these things. Joe User has a place in driving the business goals, they don't have a place in administrating the systems. If Joe User requires an office suite, guess what? It matters SFA whether their desktop is Redhat, SuSE, Mandrake, Debian, or George the Company Sysadmin's Hacked Together From Scratch Custom Distro For FooBar Inc - OpenOffice will likely meet the business goals on all of them.

Recommendations based solely on brand name is how we end up with huge companies like Mcdonalds, Microsoft, and Coca-Cola. And where does it get us? Cruddy food, cruddier software, and awesome softdrinks ;)

In the grand scheme of things, who honestly gives a crap what Linux distribution their company runs? Let the sysadmins decide. It's their problem. They know what's best for them. It's their job to make it work for you. If you want to see Linux on your desktop, advocate Linux. Advocate hamburgers. Cola. Software that works. Don't limit yourself to Brand A Linux, you're simply imposing a pointless glass ceiling.

I don't think this is quite true... the "enterprise" includes desktops.

As a "enterprise" user I can say that RedHat isn't targeting us. A few weeks ago, looking forward, I would have liked to tell our IT guys that we could migrate off our dog slow HP and Sun boxes to new faster commodity hardware running RH. They might have bought into it for the $50/year or so that the personal "non-enterprise" RH editions cost, but not anymore. RH doesn't have personal editions anymore, it has "enterprise" with a bunch of server crap that we don't need or want (no we don't need 500 workstations each running an apache server, we just need a base workstation OS).

Sure RH has a workstation enterprise edition, but on the new 64-bit AMD hardware it rings in at $792/box!! Check it out

Sorry but at $792/box we are not even going to touch it. At $50/box/year mabye, over that - forget it. Not only that I wouldn't want to touch RH given the rate they EOL their OSes. Heck, I thought I was relatively ok with the 7.2 box I was testing stuff on. Like a blur here comes RH8 (which was a radical change), then RH9, then whoops EOL, sorry you missed it...

Fedora's leadership page clearly lists redhat employees as technical lead, and taking up all the positions on the technical committee. Just because the slashtrolls say redhat's ditched it doesn't mean it's true.

Forgive me if this has been posted before, but Fedora will still be available free from Red Hat if you prefer their distro.
Granted, it is not exactly the same as their corporate distribution, and you can't get support for it. Which is pretty much how RH has operated for the past several years since the inception of their Enterprise product line.

Look at RedHat's price structure (sorry, can't find a good URL) and offerings. It sure has some similarities with MSWindows, and I'm sure it's not an accidental coincidence. They seem to agree with Microsoft that dividing the OS into segments and having a tiered price model is a viable strategy. I tend to think that Fedora is just an 'appeasement' effort and that dropping the Pro line from the consumer channel (i.e. Fry's, Best Buy) is a serious mistake, but we'll see how well this all works.

Actually, as some people say, "What makes GNU so great is that there are so many distros I can choose Debian from." I think it makes sense. From every GNU distro (RedHat, Mandrake, SuSE, Caldera---you name it) Debian is the only one which is truely kernel-independent, the only one with social contract making it free as in freedom and the only one not Intel-centric, so in other words, if there is any single distro which is better than any one else, it can be only Debian. I'm proud to say that once again I can fully agree which Bruce Perens.

ryanw, Redhat is free to charge for the support service they provide. That's what they can charge for. That's what you are paying for when you get a Redhat Enterprise Linux package. Their support. You misunderstand what Free Software is. Free Software is software libre, not merely freeware.

RHL hasn't gone away. It has, in fact, become "freer" by becoming Fedora Linux, a more community-based distro. That distro will continue to serve as the basis for the officially trademarked Redhat Enterprise Linux.

Go to http://fedora.redhat.com and educate yourself. Don't start a troll. We don't need anymore trolls on Redhat's decision to limit their official support to the stuff that actually makes them money. I would think that the reasons would be obvious, but you can certainly get a real answer to your questions if that is what you really want. If you question was merely rhetorical, then all I can say is "let's stay on topic" and avoid beating the same dead horse again.

Me: mum, dad, your computer's OS (W98) is old. You remember when my brother spent *SIX HOURS* messing with windows to get that new printer installed? Thet's gonna be the same for every new hardware or software you buy

1) Rely on us to fix it whenever we can
2) Go and buy a retail new Win OS (that'll cost you 100GBP-ish)
3) go and buy a nice new machine from pcworld or dixons for ~ 500 GBP

So, being cheapskates, they went for option 4.

No zealatory on my part, just common sense. I told em it'd look kinda different (but my mum's still mourning the Mac Classic loss, and she said 'do whatever, if it's different I'll hate it for a week, then I'll forget I hated it')

Despite all my requests, their backup strategy (which just involved them telling me what to archive) was lame- they missed out loads of things they remembered they needed. But they lost nothing, as I archived the whole of C:/.... :)

Getting some crazy garden-design programme that my dad loved (but didn't tell me about before I put linux on!) scared me, but it runs just fine under wine.

Openoffice.org does *everything* they want (and, again, I didn't realise that my dad wanted all those crazy excel features (sort by table foo, etc) ! Whatever they are, he's found them in OO.org!)

Big problem was when their ISP's smtp went down. NOT linux's fault :)

since then, it's been great. Finally my brother and I know how to fix their machine when something goes wrong. They're running 2.6.0test9, it's WAY, WAY faster than on Win 98, and guess what? They don't give 2 hoots, as it's saved them 100GBP for the OS, 100 GBP for the office suite, god knows how much for the hardware

The worst thing is, my dad's angry cos he just bought some symantec 'firewall' and now wants to know how to get his money back :)

I kept a win partition ready for their rebound, but it all worked so well that i trashed that and gave them more space for (whatever it is parents use their computers for - huge email attachments, or whatever )

anyway, all a little OT, and sounding a little too linux zealot, but my point is, if it's set up right, linuz on the desktop is well, well there.

So, does this mean we will start seeing IBM workstations with linux on them? I personaly cant wait to get a thinpad without having to pay micro$oft 20% of the cost :P

I know there are other Distros out there, but it seems like RedHat has the most commercial support currently.

Mr. Szulik we clearly disagree. I personally have been using Linux at home for about as long as your company has existed. I vaguely recall reading that someone calling themself Red Hat had just come out with something called a "Mother's Day Release", which I tried. Per http://fedora.redhat.com/about/history/ this would have been in May '95. Back then my home desktop was multiboot with my third iteration of Slackware as primary (never did get SLS to work). I switched to Red Hat as primary with your version 2.1. Iirc around then I was also checking out Linux Universe, Yggdrasil, and Debian. Oh, and I did still have a dos partition, mainly for playing Harpoon.

Red Hat Linux is now in use at several companies because I would become frustrated with Windows, bring in my Linux cd's from home. My productivity would increase because for me Linux is much easier to use than Windows. This "infection" would spread to co-workers desktops, their home systems, the company servers, management desktops, secretaries, laptops, etc. I have also introduced it to several friends and family members, including my 87 year old grandmother (who also finds it much easier to use than Windows).

Red Hat's profit in these cases has been via off-the-shelf boxed sets and RHN subscriptions. Ditto your costs; I doubt any of them ever called or emailed you. Your enterprise offerings are too expensive for this group. They won't and/or don't want to downgrade to Windows XP. Judging from the web page Fedora will release often; security and stability are very much in question. We'll see.

I understand the business reasons for your company's decision. I hope y'all understand that by cutting the expense of the clueless consumer low end you are also effectively abandoning the SMB market. In future I expect my efforts and word of mouth advertising will go toward promoting your competitors, eg Debian and SuSE (Novell).

Red Hat has been good for FOSS since well before the acronym existed. I wish you well.

Looking at the screenies, I must ask: how is this different from RH9?

Yeah -- those screenshots really tell the whole story, don't they? ;)

All kidding aside, they've made some significant changes to the RH9 core. Check out the release notes.

The stuff that really interests me is:

• Prelinking: (search for it in the link above) From an end user perspective, it will make applications load faster, as dynamicly linked libraries will be loaded ahead of time into unused memory.
• Exec-Shield: (again, search for it in the release notes) Exec-shield purports to randomize VM addresses and make parts of applications (as well as their stack) non-executable. Think of it as "damage control" for security holes. The integrated stack protection (that the Exec-shield kernel addition replaces/includes) is very important for foiling buffer overflow attacks.
• /proc/cpufreq (again, see the notes) Maybe this has been done elsewhere, but I've neither used or seen it. Apparently, you can do CPU clock throttling. This is particularly useful for laptops where CPU speed is scaled down to conserve battery. This technology is still in its infancy (for Linux, anyway) and has a way to go, but is an excellent start nonetheless.
• Laptop mode compliments /proc/cpufreq and changes disk access to a sort of block-mode that will space apart disk accesses allow for the disk to spin down and conserve battery.
• Extended RPM/Up2Date support: Up2Date now supports APT and YUM, as well as local databases. (I read somewhere that the default package management is now APT but cannot confirm this.)

Now obviously it's still Open Source, and you can still do whatever you want with it, but they aren't aiming to keep a stable branch, and they aren't expecting people to use it for work other than developing/testing it, and they're going to be guiding the project as such, and potentially standing in the way of those that try to do otherwise, as they say on that page.

I've been looking into this and my options since I saw it announced, as I have several RedHat systems, one of which I only use as my answering machine (mgetty+voice), and I can't justify $800/yr for tasks like that just to not have them hacked. I also don't want to be constantly fixing/upgrading those kind of installations as I would with Fedora or other unstable branch distributions. It looks like I'll be converting to Debian's stable branch and selectively mixing in some things from Debian's other branches as needed. It seems to be the only option now for a stable distribution, but appears to be a pretty good one.
