Bell is definitely pervasive in Canada, but (for the Americans who don't know, but still care) thankfully you don't HAVE to go with them on a number of aspects.

You can go with alternative long-distance companies; they may or may not have to pay Bell for the "privilege," but if you're not a Bell supporter then you can at least avoid paying the whole enchilada.

Cellphone service can be provided by Rogers or Telus if you're so inclined. Personally, if I needed a cellphone, I think I'd go with Telus... any company that markets their products with squirrel monkeys can't be all that bad. :)

With satellite, you do have at least one other choice, StarChoice. You can also always go with cable, if you're willing to deal with the cable company (Rogers for me, often Shaw elsewhere or Videotron in Quebec).

ISPs, now there's a sore spot. In terms of DSL, the only alternatives are generally small, local services who still have to pay a bit to use Bell's lines. It's either that or cable (again). On the other hand, I know that at least one DSL provider in Ottawa supposedly goes without a transfer cap.

I remember seeing IBM demos trying to create development systems that anyone could drag and drop their own programs together.

It had all the normal programming stuff, plus the ability to display animations, images, play music and sound, control a LaserDisc player (that dates it) and work with dBase III files. Here is a screenshot I took with a simple program (Probably wrong since I just threw down some icons and never tried to run it.). And yet that hideous red thing at the bottom is the mouse pointer. I think it is supposed to be an A.

Seriously, with a lot of stuff coming out on DVD (Simpsons, StarTrek Next Gen, etc...), I can say that I watch less and less TV (also because of it being crap these days).

If they start doing this kinda stuff, they either:
1 - better start offering their services for free (no, I don't want to hear that 'value added service' crap)
2 - are going to loose even more viewers to the DVD compilation sales.

To me, the crappyness of Robber^H^H^H^Hgers is already making me switch, even if I can't see the newest shows *right* *now*

Besides, I'm sure Junkyard Wars & RobotWars will come to DVD eventually, I can wait.

If you look at the image here you lose the photoshop tell tails on the edges. Also look at the flash reflechtion on the screen particularly at the top where you can see a fingerprint smudge. If it is a fake there's far more work in making it look real than was necessary.

That internet access was simply unrestricted. I mean, I don't care if I have to pay twice as much for my cable modem and broadband internet access -- just don't restrict my usage!!!

I wish at work, where we have a very fat pipe I could SSH over port 22! Instead of having to run sshd off a port which can be access through our LAN firewall.

I know that at work they're paying me, whereas at home I'm paying Rogers... But why the heck can't I just use what I'm paying for the way it's designed to work... It's ludicrous that I'm not allowed to run any servers from my home PC, or that I can't utilize more than a certian amount of bandwidth -- or that I can't uncap my cable modem (which *I* purchased!). The early days of broadband where one could get away with nearly anything are long gone -- these days i'm lucky that they haven't determined that I'm running sshd off that odd port and cancelled my service!

I don't know about your provider / plan, but I live in south-eastern Ontario, I have an email-enabled cell phone from Rogers AT&T and all incoming email/SMS is free, regardless of text messaging plans. I'd say, switch if you can.

Well, the version of Notes 5 under Linux I first saw was an RPM that -- the source told me -- was created in IBM by some frustrated users, and contained Note R5 plus a limited part of Wine. (Install the one RPM, and you were gold.)

Broadband internet in Ottawa is actually the norm. I think I can name two people I know who have a dialup account (and everyone I can think of who I know right now has online access) in the area. Rogers Cablesystems provides Rogers@Home service to the area (which will change in the next little while I would imagine) and provided Rogers Wave before that. With Bell's HSE and local ISPs like Magma, Trytel, and TravelNet all providing DSL at a low cost, dialup as a connection type is silly.

I would like to mention that one of the reasons why @Home is probably dying is because of the amount of money they have to pour into support due to their horrible service. I have several friends who work for or have worked for Taima in Ottawa, a company that Rogers@Home uses to outsource support to (one of many) and apparently they have a lack of employees.

I wouldn't say Broadband is dead, just fairly mismanaged. :)

At least they don't rename their Electrical and Computer Engineering program to the local cable company!

There is an excellent CD production made at Simon Fraser University in BC, called The Prime Ministers of Canada. The website is a great example of the use of Flash and standard HTML, the CD was produced using Macromedia Director and uses some very innovative and complex Lingo programming (a friend of mine was the chief Lingo programmer on the project which why I know about it). It forms part of the Canadian Encyclopedia World Edition and can be purchased online at Chapters.ca or Indigo.ca

Fast forward a month, when it comes time to pay the bill, i get not one, but two. The first dealership just dripped with incompetance, and forgot to cancel the initial account. Ok, so i call Roger's tech support to get this corrected... only to find out that want me, personally, to go back into the incompetent dealership to make them fix the problem, despite the fact i had no contract with Rogers on that number, and that it was an internal screwup.

The point of the story... yes, while they kept putting the onus on me to fix the problem their incompetence created, I kept insisting that it was their fault, I had no contract for that number, and therefore was under no obligation to fix it. I kept increasing the asshole factor (asking to talk to the supervisor, etc.), until eventually they caved in, and the supervisor personally called the incompetent dealer that messed up, getting the problem fixed.

The lesson to be learned is that... well, put enough pressure on them when it is obviously their responcibility, and wonderful things will happen. =^)

Thanks to Rogers Digital Choice TV, I already get all the specialty channels I receive, plus all 45 PPV channels and 6 movie network channels, digitally -- and they look and sound amazing.

Call me nuts, but I think the digital revolution is already here.
