Re:Anyone remember Matrix II & III
Soldier, also written by Ellison for The Outer Limits, was also a prime inspiration for Terminator.

Re:Anyone remember Matrix II & III
No, you don't. She's crazy and she has no case. For starters, someone else has already sued James Cameron for plagarising the "Terminator" script: Harlan Ellison, and he won. The story he claimed Cameron ripped off, Demon with a Glass Hand, was written before Sofia Smith was born. So unless Ms. Smith is herself a time traveller, it's not very likely that she has a case.

Re:Shadow beam
Funnily enough I saw Cube just before I saw Resident Evil, so I'd seen the idea before - it's used in Cube's memorable opening sequence. Oddly enough, Paul Anderson claims to have never seen Cube - yeah right
But I have no illusions - if I were a film director, I'd be Paul Anderson. -

Hmmmm, Reminds me of a movie...In The Conquest of The Planet of the Apes,
"Apparently some astronauts actually returned from space (this time) and brought with them a strange virus which wiped out the cats and dogs. So then people decided to adopt Apes as pets instead, but the Apes began to display the ability to do more than those pets ever could so eventually man turned them into servants and then slaves of man." http://www.scifilm.org/reviews/conquestapes.html
Perhaps it should read: Some Scientists began Genetically Engineering Hypoallergenic Pets which had a side effect and brought with it a strange virus which wiped out the cats and dogs. So then people decided to adopt Apes as pets instead,... -
Re:Castle in the Sky / Laputa
I've only seen the TV trailers, but I get the distinct impression that the Miyazaki film "Castle in the Sky" served as the inspiration for the visuals. Not only in the blimp-battleships, but also those walking robots
Or they both could have been inspired by 1930's and 40's blimp battleships and robots.
The Superman Cartoons from the 40's also have giant robots who's arm are wings. Who show up, take what they came for and leave without a trace.
Tentacle arms on giant walking machines are described as far back as The War Of The Worlds, a book from the 19th century!
Not sayin' he ain't a Miyazaki fan and he did not take any inspiration from it (I don't know that), just pointing out that his inspirations definatly go farther back than the 80's.... and that you need to broaden your pop culture background : ) -

It's been done before
It's been done before, with Lee Marvin as "Battling Maxo's" owner/manager.
Ob Recap...
In the far future year of 1974, humans are no longer allowed to participate in the rugged sport of boxing. Their place has been taken by lifelike androids, who batter each other for the amusement of sports fans. Such an android is "Battling Maxo", an obsolete, creaking B2 model on the verge of falling apart completely. Maxo's manager, a tough ex-fighter named "Steel" Kelly, along with mechanic Pole, accompany the fighter to Maynard, Kansas, where Maxo is scheduled to take on a much superior model B7.

Re:"enormous suffering" and culture
So, here's my question, to which I would truly like an answer: Is there acknowledgement in Japanese culture of the Bad Things that were done by Japan (whether by the gov't, the military or the people I'll leave for later debate) in the 20th century?
If earlier centuries count as well as the 20th, then you have an obvious (and on-topic!) example in Japanese culture. Another great anime feature, "Princess Mononoke" is largely about the sad fate of Ainu/Emishi (please, let's not enter into the whole scholastics of "are Emishi Ainu?" question) people, virtually exterminated by Japanese (while some of them still live a rather poor living as an oppressed minority in Japan today). -
