YES THEY ARE.
I went to the bloody Microsoft forums to discuss some of the shortcomings of Windows 7.
I told them X and Y and Z and mentioned why I don't like this and that.
The response from the MVP's on the site was basically pedantic stupidity. Most of the features I complained about were actually introduced in Windows Vista and have remained in 7.
So because I was saying "I prefer it the old way" they were correcting me because "but it was like this in the old way, are you talking about XP?" as if XP users don't exist?!I mean really, let's be serious now, Windows 7 is an attempt to convince the XP holdouts to switch to the new tech, Vista sheep have already been convinced it's all fine.
So here I am saying "look I'm fine with breadcrumbs on as long as there's an option to turn the things off" instead you find 15 responses telling me how good the breadcrumbs are.
I don't give a shit if you like them pal and I'm happy for you but don't go telling me I'm 'wrong' because I don't find them innovative, what HARM is there in having them turned off for me? Jesus the internet kills me this week!I figure slashdot is the most likely place on the internet where the Windows users (if any) think in folders and paths - having the display broken up with stupid downarrows is annoying!
Eventually the MVP's told me to bundle my posts up and post them in to a single giant 400 page thread that the developers go through from time to time.
What?!
I want to debate and discuss the intracacies of UI design, if a single topic like breadcrumbs takes 3 pages to hash out a good solution so be it, not a single whiny post from me going "Hurr I don't like breadcrumbs" - what will the dev team think of that post?I am a pedantic, whiny prick but I firmly believe I'm right (surprise surprise) and furthermore options are always good for the end user.
I've made some massive Vista whine posts on slashdot and my general issue to this day remains, the core explorer and user interface is an abomination, XP isn't flawless but Vista is worse and frankly that's not good enough.I can think of 2 positive things added in Win 7, one is superior to Vista, the other is superior to even XP.
1.
If I hit Win & R (run) type in c:\windows\system32 and hit enter, the results are different on XP, Vista and Win7.
Windows 7 now has without doubt the best result, it opens a 'full' explorer (with tree) interface and the tree on the left is expanded to the folder you are in (if you enable an option) under Windows XP you had to click 'folders' button (but it was still good) under Vista, it was an abortion2.
The default 'full explorer' the "name / size / type / modified" bar at the top, Windows XP is basic, simple, clean
Windows Vista is an abortion a filthy disgusting abortion of cluttered UI and hatred, it drives me insane!
(See this picture from my previous /. posts http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/whywhy02.jpg )
Finally the 'full explorer' in Windows 7 is a hybrid of XP and Vista and the dopey little intrusive downarrows are gone on those fields but do appear on a mouseover - absoloutely lovely.I know these 2 points are so damned minor but for goodness sakes, most of us are techs / geeks, sure I don't run linux ok, forgive me but I do still work on a Windows PC and damnit if I don't want data, in my brain QUICKLY and NEATLY and having an interface full of, well rubbish doesn't help me do what I need to do.
Check this thing out for an example of why Vista is an abortion in UI design and I didn't even circle every thing you can interact with...

Vista continues to be rubbish
Hi gents,
Today is my fourth attempt in 12 months to try and use Vista and I loathe it within hours of installation.
I've made several posts about Vista in the past, such as this one.
http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=364823&cid=21406737
At this point in time, I am definately not in the crowd which claims it's got poor performance or compatibility, both of these are not major issues for me.
What continues to tick me off and continues to be a problem which I firmly believe will NEVER be fixed is the classic user interface for us 'tech types' (who don't use linux) is absoloutely and utterly appalling!
As you'll see from the link up there, there's a plethora of small niggles in Vista which quite simply don't exist in XP - the much older OS.
Today I bring you another which I managed to capture, it's a small simple little bug but it's JUST PLAIN FRUSTRATING AND STUPID (sorry but it is)
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/WTF.wmv (encoded with Windows Media Encoder 9, sorry people, you'll likely need a recent version of WMP)
That movie there really summarises some of the well, dumb shit that Vista does.
Why would clicking NEAR the folder and having the folder highlight, not update the window to the right?
Before anyone says it, I agree that's a ridiculously small problem but none the less XP does this fine! it's awkward, annoying and it wastes my time.
So, looks like my desktop PC is about to get XP MCE, because I'm not putting up with Vista as my primary OS just so I can record TV shows, stuff that.
- Scott
P.S if ANYONE from MS does actually read this, message me, email me - reply to us all anonymously and explain why on earth such a simple thing was missed? Did anyone actually test this UI when developing this OS or did every moron leave the bloody aero theme on during testing? -
I hate to re-post this but,....
Please, don't mod down, just don't mod up if you don't like re-posts? How's that for a deal.
Vista's flaw isn't it's lack of a service pack it's the complete lack of THOUGHT in the design of the operating system.
The user interface is quite simply, messy - it's appalling, frustrating, confusing and slow.
Re-post below, sorry but damnit if it's not on topic and fitting (mind the language, I was pissed off when I wrote it)
(I wonder if Microsoft chumps read this site, I can post this all I want but how do I get these darn issues addressed, where do I post this to tell these idiots to wake the hell up?)
Anyhow, here goes..
First off, this post and my subsequent replies, my "general whinge with the OS"

Then in a little bit more detail
(crosspost of a post I made on a forum not more than 24 hours ago, I finally documented precisely why Vista Explorer shits me to tears)
Warning: Bad language ahead.
Why does Windows Vista insist on a startup sound, despite me disabling all sounds, they are turned off but it does one at startup, I like quiet and what if I don't want to wake people up?
I've been meaning to make this post for a while, I may have railed on Vista for performance problems, specifically in Crysis, you do need to give a new operating system a 'pass' for a while, let it settle in (it's nearly been a year though!!!)
My beef still sits with Windows Explorer, something I use daily, a lot at work and home, I need it clean, simple and easy to get data into my face as quick as possible so I can react as quickly as possible (yes, I sorry to big note but I am, *that* quick on the keyboard and when working with files)
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/argh01.jpg [shackspace.com]
Apply to all folders won't let me save the options for "Computer" (My Computer) or Desktop, this is annoying.

Those little box pluses, I like them, why take them away? It's confusing and slowing down the amount of data I can take in per 'scene' I need info and you're witholding it, just so you can pretend you're neater than you actually are.

You call this a save as dialogue box?
I hit shift tab twice (yes, I do often, try it people) to navigate quickly to where I normally would on XP.
I slap backspace like 10 times fast, this should ensure I'm at desktop, almost instantly (shift tab x2 and backspace x10 takes me 1 second)
Does it work? no, of course it doesn't you breadcrumb whores.

This is one of the best reasons WHY I can't deal, look at it -
I hate to re-post this but,....

How about Microsoft address some of this stuff!

My beef still sits with Windows Explorer, something I use daily, a lot at work and home, I need it clean, simple and easy to get data into my face as quick as possible so I can react as quickly as possible (yes, I sorry to big note but I am, *that* quick on the keyboard and when working with files)
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/argh01.jpg
Apply to all folders won't let me save the options for "Computer" (My Computer) or Desktop, this is annoying.
also, fuck the breadcrumbs bar, in the ASSSSS
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/argh02.jpg
That motherfucker 'task pane' which is taking space up from my damn explorer view.
Sure, I found some website suggesting I shrink the size of it (yay) but I can still accidentally click the bastard, plus it still looks messy.
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/argh03.jpg
Mofo! I accidentally clicked it, see explanation of why it eats babies in the JPG itself.
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/whywhy01.jpg
Those little box pluses, I like them, why take them away? It's confusing and slowing down the amount of data I can take in per 'scene' I need info and you're witholding it, just so you can pretend you're neater than you actually are.
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/whywhy02.jpg
Ahh my boxes are back, this is good, also more cluttered shit.
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/wtf01.jpg
You call this a save as dialogue box?
I hit shift tab twice (yes, I do often, try it people) to navigate quickly to where I normally would on XP.
I slap backspace like 10 times fast, this should ensure I'm at desktop, almost instantly (shift tab x2 and backspace x10 takes me 1 second)
Does it work? no, of course it doesn't you breadcrumb whores.
soooo I hit browse
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/wtf02.jpg oh oh
Hot jesus, make the fucking hurting stop!
This is one of the best reasons WHY I can't deal, look at it, just look and tell me that's simple, quick and easy to work with?
This picture alone is why osx is going to gain some serious marketshare in the next 5 years.

This one is a lot more subtle, this is the kind of cluttered stuff that's hard for anyone to notice is cluttered unless you analyse it.

Ok so here's what a finger mouser looks like vs a palm mouser, for the few of you who are curious.
Video one, finger mousing.
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/mousing/finger-mous er1.avi
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/mousing/finger-mous er2.avi
my palm basically doesn't ever come off the surface of the desk or at least the base of my wrist doesn't - ever.
I am moving the mouse up and down with my fingers only, in and out of my hand erotically
Video two, palm mousing.
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/mousing/palm-mouser .avi
I don't even know HOW to do it, I had to re-align my hand to try and figure it out.
It may not hurt you but I find it incredibly bad for my elbow / shoulder as your whole arm seems to be used just to control a mouse.
Video three and 4.
Self explanatory.
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/mousing/HL2mp-tight %20map.avi
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/mousing/sin2-single player.avi
Video five, fucking around in Q/World.
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/mousing/quakeworld. avi
This is where my HUGE (or rather tiny) problem comes in. (FFWD to about 50 seconds in)
I do _NOT_ use airplane controls.
Now that's me doing a rocket jump.
Pull the mouse into me, fire rocket, hit jump (mouse 2) push mouse away - all VERY fast.
Problem is I absoloutely MUST be able to pull that mouse in ALL THE WAY so I'm looking at the ground, this is IMPERATIVE.
It is _impossible_ with a mouse with a fat ass or a long body - period, hence I need a small mouse - designed for finger people.
IE: NOT any of the Logi MX500/700/1000 or G series and none of the MS Explorer ones either.
Hand size, relative to a DVD :( and against a ruler.
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/mousing/handsize-re lative%20to%20dvd.jpg
http://abrasion.shackspace.com/mousing/midgetboy.j pg :( :(
NOTE: over 95% of the time the body of the mouse is _NEVER_ touching the inside of my palm - ever, fingertips only! -

IE: NOT any of the Logi MX500/700/1000 or G series and none of the MS Explorer ones either.
Hand size, relative to a DVD :( and against a ruler.

NOTE: over 95% of the time the body of the mouse is _NEVER_ touching the inside of my palm - ever, fingertips only! -

Re:Not practical?
I hadn't thought of that before. I guess it's cuz I've never owned a PDA. But other than that, the PSP's hardware seems a lot more impressive. Wouldn't the keyboard attatchment(which seems fairly light-weight though I don't know how functional it is) get rid of the need for a stylus or touch screen?

Worked for me tooI also used a throwaway email account.
I signed up with Ancestry.com when that was available, which was a free trial. I cancelled that after a week or so, so there were no charges.
I got 3 referrals from a gaming website's forums, and another 2 from my personal website.
Got my free iPod after about 6 or 7 weeks.
This was back in mid July, 2004, so I caught it relatively early.

Damn the "Fair Uses"
Fair use is soemthing else. The DMCA enshrines digital media that abolishes all unregulated use. The MPAA/RIAA want to do this because the technology allows it. What they want to do is impossible to do with traditional media.
The entire picture is distorted by the prevalence of this "us vs them" battle. These laws dictate proper use of any creative work. The DMCA itself dictates the proper use of any digital distribution, creative or not. The RIAA/MPAA make up a very, very, small portion of the subject being regulated.
Lessig's presentation. (mirror)
On the "Us Vs Them" front, the RIAA/MPAA want to monopolize the American source of Culture. This is a very lucrative proposition. The RIAA/MPAA demonstrate a flagrant irresponsibility as steward of the culture they currently control, and they want to own more. They do this by bleeding off the Unregulated areas of Copyright. The goal is to abolish The Commons, so that you must buy your heritage from Universal Music Group, et al.
