Re:Unusually +ve but what's in it for refusniks?
I'm still sticking with Win7.
If you couldn't justifying the technical improvements of Windows 10 over Windows 7 what made you think that a small service pack would change that? Also a gentle reminder that your telemetry is back-ported and you're not playing a game of Windows Update roulette using your old system, babying it as you do. What a horrible way to use an OS.
My laptop doesn't need to be confused with a phone
If this is likely to happen to you then you're holding it wrong.

Re:Ugh
I assume the Slashdot editors are just doing their part to remain vigilant against a resurgence of sidetalking.
It's a serious matter and everyone must do their part! -
Re:well duh
It's just not the same level of craptacularness now that they've gotten rid of the sidetalkin' feature.

Obligatory Sidetalkin' link

Irony
the best thing about the first N-Gage is that Nokia PR said something along the lines that you wouldn't want to be caught dead pulling out a GBA in public because it's so uncool.
I can't make that shit up. -
Re:It's not a Gameboy that doubles as phone....
The new models might be good phones, I don't know. But the first model was the only phone with the only feature that matters:
Sidetalkin'. -
Re:must be more zero tolerance
It's a very valuable page. No wonder the school and police were after this fellow. He wasn't just taking some lousy page that no one read in the last 3 months temporarily out of service, he was trying to stop students from "achiev[ing] their full potential for intellectual and personal growth". Clearly, he had to be stopped before he went on to more illustrious crimes like overwhelming the server that powers the site about sidetalking.

Re:No Way!
Hard to believe, since it left out the most important feature: SIDETALKING.

Re:The Playstation 3 is not a game machine...
The only thing more priceless than Kutaragi's pose is the hilariously (and probably intenionally) bad photoshopping!
Not since sidetalking.com has the world seen a better site mocking the shape of a console. -
Side Talkin!
Why quit now, when users look so cool talking on an N-Gage?

Re:Chat... but what about phone?
The real question is...will it support sidetalking?
-
There's also mention of a headset
What!?!? No side talking?!?!
-
Ngage!
How could they possibly be doing poorly when they invented the wonder of sidetalking?

Re:It's a ShameYeah, PocketPC sucks but it's "oK' for tiny devices. I actually ignored PocketPC for about two years and a coworker showed me his new HP. Very nice, interface sucks. It took him 10 minutes of fiddling with it and an extra five of mine to figure out where the MAC address for the wireless card is.
This thing first and foremost is a telephone, I could at least see holding this thing up to my head to make a phone call. I'd hate to have to pull my Libretto L5* out and hold it up to my head like a Nokia N-gage. (just kidding, had to make the joke) Seriously, you would have to get a Bluetooth headset and either a BT laptop or a USB dongle for it or get a corded headset and at that point it's just a big pain in the ass.
I have a Motorola V400 and I consider it to be a bit on the biggish side.
*I don't own one but wouldn't mind one at all.

Mourning the death of the best feature
The original Sidetalking! website has started a petition to bring back the most hilariously awful feature in their phones yet.
R.I.P. sidetalking... -
Re:Nokia's day has gone...
I absolutely love my Nokia 3310, but it's "just" a phone of course.
Most of my friends doing the Smart Phone thing have indeed opted for other brands lately (except for one guy who swears by Nokia and doesn't mind a little sidetalkin').
But now I'm working for a startup that wants its website to eventually be Smart Phone compatible, and so I've started looking into what I should have them get me.
And the new Nokias look very promising.
So - our Finnish friends have definitely heard the criticism, and I'm very curious how the new lineup is going to change things.
Competition is Good.

Re:Palm Desktop worth a look
I would agree, and add that the Palm Pilot itself has proven a wonderfully valuable tool for me. As a full-time software engineer, part-time youth pastor, father of two, member of several committees, I would lose my mind without the ability to track my various to do items (which are usually well over 50).
I use Palm Desktop in w1ndows, and JPilot in Linux. I have found JPilot the most useful analog to Palm Desktop in Linux, as it is the only one I have found to preserve my to-do list categories and priorities (c.f. Evolution). I have a very low-end palm m100, but having uplink cables at home and with my laptop at work, and the optional keyboard has greatly increased my ability to juggle. I regularly take meeting notes with the keyboard, and can shove them right into any application via cut-and-paste. Very handy, and worth the low entry-level cost, especially if you aren't interested in bells, whistles, and convergence

Hmm...
I was under the impression that this was something already available as evidence by this:

Seriously though, why not make better phones instead of some half-assed jack of all trades? -
Re:N-GAGE anyone?
The new QD does seem to resolve allot of problems.
Namely the hotwasp and the now famous side talking anti-feature.
They'll probably get it right eventually, but it's heavilly dependent on the likes of EA and Activision to develop the "right kind" of games for N-GAGE.
P.S. I don't know how they're going to solve the size issue, maybe a side panel format like the new 6260 is the solution. -
Re:PDA:s are semi-obsoleteIt's a strategic decision really -- only time will tell if PalmOne took the right decision.
I've seen all the newest smartphones pass by my desk, Nokia 6600, SonyEricsson P900, Siemens SX1 -- they are just not PDA's. They are phones, trying to do too much -- so you end up with a wierd hybrid of a phone, PDA, mp3player that doesn't do anything good and is not even usable as a phone anymore.
Screens on all these phones are no match for the new crispy Palm screens, and the sheer number of applications I can download for the Palm makes all the difference.

Missing the point again
The main problem with the N-Gage is not its features, interface, cost, the fact that you have to take the battery off to switch them out or any number of other things. The main problem with it is that it's not a very good game console. If it wasn't a phone at all and just a GBA competitor people still wouldn't like it. The framerates in the 3D titles is choppy, the control surface is poor, the screen is oriented the wrong way and the color is too washed out [ever tried Puzzle Bobble?]. If it was a great game system then yes, people would put up with some quirks.
I first tried it out at the GDC last year and thought it was a joke. That's before I know about the game-switching antics, the sidetalking or the exorbitant cost.
Someone at Nokia needs to read The Inmates Are Running the Asylumn. -
Sidetalkin'
Hmmz, I guess I really hate spamming my own posts, but I tend to post then remember some other stuff...

Obligatory Sidetalkin' link.

Re:Looks cool? No, sarcasm is not lost on me at all. The term "sidetalking" without a link to the URL is meaningless (unless you really have so much time on your hands that looking for dorky web sites is how you spend it).
Now if it said sidetalking then that would have been sarcastic.
Now, if one were referring to sidetalking as speaking as if in an aside, let me say to the rest of the readers, "Is this guy a dick or what?"
-
Hey
Hey! I love sidetalking
-
Re:Looks cool?
No, it's so uncool that it makes sidetalking look cool by comparison.
