Re:...overkill...?
Doubt it. Sales of LCD TVs dropped for the first time. And average selling price is too low for anyone to be making serious coin.
Pretty much. And since 3D is widely recognized to be a big disappointment, that means they're going to be desperate to come up with something that's going to get us to all run out and replace our perfectly good flatscreens.
I think they were hoping that smart TV's were going to take off, but most people I know don't want all that bullshit built into their TV and would prefer a separate box and those sales are pretty lackluster from what I've read also. That leaves the 4K displays.

Re:Yeah go with a tablet - iPad is a good choice
If if is going to be permanently in one location, than a goofy little partly functional device makes no sense at all.
You are really looking at something more along these lines http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Reviews/Home_Office/G3X2A9D4.
So an all in one computer mounted to say a cabinet door with a slide out and tilt forward keyboard mounted underneath that cabinet, mains powered.
If you can afford to spend more, why stuff about with a dinky little toy. Here's another http://www.pcworld.com/article/185061/windows_7_allinone_pcs_big_touchscreens_for_all_budgets.html. Basically what they are looking at, is what ever is left in the all in one PC with touch screen market, with a 20 inch or bigger screen.

Re:Since when is copying innovation?
I'm sorry but the attitude on
/. here is that whatever not Apple would do it's ALWAYS wrong. Imagine if tables were reversed and how the reaction would be towards Samsung if there would be a reaction at all!http://www.eetimes.com/electronics-news/4058472/Samsung-set-to-sue-Asian-phone-makers-says-report - http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Content_And_Downloads/Industry/X8M9G5T9 - http://consumerist.com/2010/05/samsung-sues-journalist-for-satirically-pointing-out-that-its-chairman-keeps-getting-convicted-of-cr.html - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/12/07/samsung_sues_matsushita/ - http://www.crn.com.au/News/114322,samsung-sues-polaroid-and-westinghouse-over-patent-infringement.aspx - http://www.cn-c114.net/578/a294176.html

Re:Also CF Card
Archival DVD rated at 300 years. It might not last 300 years, but hopefully it'd last long enough for this time capsule.

Re:New?
I prefer the new 3D LCD monitors that don't require glasses at all - one of my customers bought one earlier this year (or had it sent to them for research?) in any case - I got to play on it a while - the 3D was viewable from a pretty good wide angle, and it was almost bizarre seeing it with no glasses on... the image really popped out of the screen and looked like it had true depth.

As well Microsoft has announced about 100$ for each xbox 360 sold thus far($1 billion dollars). Which would be warranty repair costs and replacements costs for 1/3 of it's units if each replacement costs the same price as a new one in product costs and handling costs. Some say they may just be overly cautious but no manufacturer would announce such a huge warranty budget and risk extremely bad PR if there wasn't a problem. Given the next revision (falcon) will utilize the 65nm chip fab for the CPU it's less likely those will fail thus that billion is likely for machines already sold. Those new boxes aren't in the retail channels yet either. -
Re:So what you're saying is...
I'd say the hype is all in articles talking about decent players being given away at pennies on the dollar, when you've got a similar player that can't be given away, hype is your best friend.
You got that right. There was an article on SmartHouse a while back, when Apple's accessory licensing program was less than ideal for accessory makers. Apple had just decided to charge them 10%, up from 1.5% for each accessory they made that connected to the iPod. Apple relented and decided to only charge $4 per accessory with a dock connector. Good for the over $100 market, not as good for the under.
But at any rate, manufacturers were begrudgingly quoted saying that Apple had gotten it right, but creating a universal dock connector across all iPods. If the rest of the industry could have just decided on one connector (or even mostly one) as well, they'd have more accessories piling their way.
Bose said: "What we need is for the MP3 vendors running the Microsoft operating system to get together and deliver a common port across all MP3 devices. We also need a common docking design so that people like Bose can develop common accessories. Currently Apple is the only one with a common port as a result accessory manufacturers are designing for the iPod Apple platform"
So, now Apple, advantaged by the numbers, makes out like a bandit with a huge marketshare and universal iPod accessories. This is why iPhone is going to benefit tremendously too. I don't know of any phone that will be entering the market with so many people with existing accessories they'll be connecting to it. Even funnier... some of those accessories are their cars.
Accessory makers with 7" screen extenders without enough headroom for the extra
.5 inch are kicking themselves though. :-)At the end of the day, that's not just HYPE. I'm still angry my Motorola phones keep getting NEW adapter designs everytime I get a new phone... and they ALL SUCK. When I head to the iPhone promise land, I won't be looking back. It won't really be the hype that keeps me... but the experience of not being jerked around and wasting investments on accessories that serve no other purpose and have little resale value.

Re:Could somebody please enlighten me?
Depending on how a fidelity recording you want to make, a usb turntable is a viable option. It even uses Audacity as it's software side, which includes good plugins for removing clicks/hiss.

Alternatively, you can buy a nice sound card something with a 24-bit 96khz input and use a turntable with appropriate cabling to connect to the jack.

Re:Please Don't Interpret this Incorrectly
Then why are they shuffling all the vista team honchos out and pulling the XBOX team from XBOX and reassigninging them to the vista project.

Articles that say the opposite of this one
The submissions says pornographers are staying away, but I've been reading the opposite conclusion in the past few weeks:
iPod Porn Now Available
Apple iPod delivers "iPorno" revolution
I think it's silly to think pornographers won't be taking advantage of the iPod. Millions of people have them, and millions would love to have porn on them. It's easy business. -
