160 GB
IANAAFB (I am not an Apple fanboy), but the 160 GB iPod Classic is sweet, even if the Archos 605 was the first to that memory density. Time to upgrade! I looked at the gallery at Apple.com and there were no pics of the op or bottom of the Classic - is the headphone jack on bottom as the rumors claim?

Gifts?
I am curious how this would affect the MMOG I play, Guild Wars. they give out random gifts for each year of character existence, as well as rewards for completing tasks in-game. Would these be taxable items, if they ever exceeded the $25,000 threshold? What is the limit for personal transactions between individuals before the income becomes taxable? $500? $800?

Vox Populi killed the bill
Anyone who has been following this issue for the past six weeks knows good and well that the audacity of the elected officials to ignore, debase, and belittle their constituents created the massive ground swell of dissenting voters. To claim that the Nation ID idea caused the defeat of this bill is ludicrous. But if the blurb had commented on talk radio and conservatives, this wouldn't be Slashdot, now would it?
Conservative, liberal, and moderate voters all thought this was a poor idea - not some minor amendment to this stinking legislation.

VM performance comparison
Has anyone done a recent true apples to apples comparison with Vmware, Virtual Server, and maybe Sen on the same exact hardware running the same guest VMs? Obviously it would have to have Windows as the host OS due to Virtual Server being Windows only but I would like to see how the various solutions stack up in different scenarios. Such as IO heavy, CPU heavy, sheer number of VMs that can be hosted, etc.

Slashdot readers come out in force
After reading through approximately 60 posts out of 150 posted, it is obvious that since the program being criticized was of the conservative view, Spork/Sprock/Whatever was justified in his presentations to Visa and other sponsors. If someone wants to complaint to a corporation about the content of a show that company sponsors, more power to them. I will be hard-pressed to contain my humor, however, when some conservative goes to a company for advertising on a show like "Will and Grace", for example, and Slashdot readers will be sure to criticize that corporation for withdrawing ad dollars. Content is content. Some people will like it; some will be upset by it. However, one must be consistent in their stance on this issue. Is it acceptable for a corporation to withdraw advertising revenue after political heat is applied, or is it not? As for the commentators, anonymous and otherwise, people are not sheeple. Using that word only makes you appear elitist and condescending. I give the flamebait/troll tag ten minutes on the over/under.

Yeah, I must have missed all the National Security Leaks by the NY Times during Clinton's presidency. Funny how you cite the lame PlameGate, but mention nothing about the banking investigations, the approved and legal wiretapping for foreign nationals, ect. ect.

I also applaud the mitigation of purjury; 'it was only a blowjob'.

Re:A suggestion:
That sucks.
Years ago, I took English Lit II as part of a 18+ credit load. It was at 7:30am, I was habitually late or absent, but I made a point of stopping in during office hours. The prof knew me, knew I knew what I was talking about, knew I read up, and did well on the tests. I'm sure I got at least a B. Maybe an A. And with the six-and-fail rule, I'd have an F.
Years later but years ago, I took a DB class. The prof, outside of class, was pretty OK. I've dealt with some of the organizations he's worked with before getting his Ph.D. and they still think highly of him. But that class was worthless. I knew less about databases at the end of it than at the beginning. I learned more about databases in a short course on Oracle set up for staff. Literally, he gave the same lecture (about how he wrote databases for a hospital in Indianapolis) at least four times during the semester. Perhaps more. Required class, though, so there was a group of people I took classes with, and they were all in it with me, and they all started skipping with me. We passed. We went on to the next classes. And with a six-and-fail rule, we'd all have Fs.

Wow. How rough you must have it.
I find the entire attitude of the poster's blurb a perfect summary of the prevailing attitude here at
/. "I'm inconvenienced" "I have to buy toilettries everytime I take a trip" "Another anal probe" "My rights of Do-What-I-Please are being trampled on" Amazing that when something is done about a possible attack, people find a way to complain. Suck it up, or find another means of travel. Why do you need /. to ask this question? Can you not take any personal responsibility to determine the best course of action after analyzing the options? What next? "Dear /. - should I wear the black Hope 2006 t-shirt today or the Lara Croft: Revelations E3 limited collector's shirt? Take control of your life and your reactions to misfortunes or other occurences. Tocome on /. and complain with a thinly-veiled question that masks your discomfort becasue some people's lives may have been saved is sad and pathetic.

Obligatory Mitch Hedberg Quote
I rent a lot of cars, 'cause I go on the road, and when I drive a rental car, I don't know what's going on with them, right. So a lot of times I'll drive for like ten miles with the emergency brake on. That doesn't say a lot for me, but it really doesn't say a lot for the emergency brake. It's really not an emergency brake, it's an emergency 'make the car smell funny' lever.

Re:code.google.com
...the value they get from OSS is far more than anything they contribute.
And how do you expect it to be any different? You can't survive as a buisness if your policy is to give away more than you recieve. It seems to me that you've forgotten what OSS is about. It is free, and written to be useful to everyone, not as a means to make other people write code for you. Google is taking advantage of this the way it's expected to.
Think of how normal people use OSS. I myself have a full operating system with an awesome desktop environment, and I use software that's the best of the best. But have I written a full window manager with a widget system, a web browser, an instant messaging client, a first-person shooter, and countless other apps to contribute back? No, I've made a small bugfix to the Greasemonkey script I use for my signatures and a small hack to better integrate a plugin in a content management system. Once I wrote a breakout clone in Java that nobody wanted. That's about it, and it's okay, because that little bit still adds to the whole. I think Google's contributions are more than equivilant.

Re:Warp drive?
In this article, it says that the original Orion design was large enough for 150 people but would have used less than 2,000 bombs to reach escape velocity. If they used fusion bombs instead of fission bombs, there would be much less radioactive waste and much higher yield per explosion. It also mentions that the testing proccess for the entire project, despite using thousands of bombs, would increase the total atmospheric contamination by less than 1%.

Re:Can IM/RSS clients download automatically?
Most IM clients require the user to manually accept an image or file embedded into the message, or enter a special mode that the other user has to confirm. Avatars are loaded automatically, though - but it might not be possible to set this image as an avatar (dimensions/length/format constraints, or something)
RSS and similar feeds do not use HTML by their very nature (they are a language of their own), though it is entirely possible to send HTML code as the content. It probably will not be parsed, though. Also, some feed formats support an avatar for users mentioned in the feed, so that could be another mode of transmission.
