Re:The Simpsons did it best...

Re:The Simpsons?
You also notice some very interesting things that changed real quick. Like Smither's skin color changing after 1 episode =]
Actually, that was a colouring mistake. If you read the episode capsule for Homer's Odyssey at snpp.com, you'll find:
By now, most people have noticed that Smithers
is black in this episode. According to David
Silverman, Gyorgi Peluci, the person who did
the color styling randomly decided the
ethnicity of various characters, which usually
wasn't much of a a problem, but it sort of
ruined the ``white sycophant'' persona for
Smithers. Budget constraints precluded
recoloring, so they left it the way it was. If
it really bothers you, just imagine that he has
a ``Caribbean suntan.'' -
Gratutious Simpsons quotation.
TI recently announced the development of a new calculator, known as the Voyage 200, to replace the TI-92+. The software changes are rather minor, [...] though the addition of a clock makes the Voyage more functional for some.
Guess TI learned from Homer:
"People are afraid of new things. You should have just taken an existing product and put a clock in it or something."
-- Homer Simpson, on the revolutionary baby translator of which he is presented with a prototype, which makes Maggie's baby-talk intelligible.

Do want a happy God or a vengeful God?
One of my favorite moments in the Simpsons is Espisode 8F11 where Bart has a microphone that broadcasts over the radio to a gullible Rod and Todd.
Bart: [over the radio] Rod! Todd! This is God!
Rod: How did you get on the radio?io?
Bart: Whaddya mean, how did I get on the radio? I created the universe! Stupid kid.
Todd+Rod: [fall to their knees and clasp their hands]
Todd: Forgive my brother. We believe you.
Bart: Talk is cheap. Perhaps I'll test a guy's faith. Walk through the wall! I will remove it for you.
Rod: [walks into the wall] [thud]
Bart: Ha ha ha.
Todd+Rod: [return to their knees in prayer]
Todd: What do you want from us?
Bart: I got a job for you. Bring forth all the cookies from your kitchen and leave them on the Simpsons' porch.
Rod: But those cookies belong to our parents.
Bart: Ugh! Look, do you want a happy God or a vengeful God?
Todd: [quickly] Happy God. Happy God.
Bart: Then quit flapping your lip and make with the cookies!
Todd+Rod: Yes, sir! While searching for this episode, I ran across an article, "God and The Simpsons: The Religious Life of an Animated Sitcom" by Gerry Bowler, written in 1996.

The Simpson Files was the episode. Additionally The Simpsons is the only time I've heard/seen Ganesh, Gore Vidal, Haig, used in a comedy program.

Re:I really liked Futurama until...... I watched the Lucy Liu episode, which has some heavy RIAA-aligned propaganda against P2P file sharing. It was somewhat disturbing to see that in such a cool show.
I don't think it was heavy-handed - I think it was hilariously funny. Sure, they portrayed us "computer geeks" in a manner similar to The Simpson's episode Homer Goes to College, but if I can't take some ribbing about my friends then I've lost my sense of perspective. And the portrayal of "nappster.com" in the Futurama Episode you're talking about I Dated a Robot shows how those in the entertainment industry really do feel about the "threat" of file-sharing services. (Hint: Most of the real world doesn't recognize any particular right to share arbitrary streams of bytes.)

Re:Futurama?
Indeed they did, but Diznee did not have Matt Groening, so of course it would have to be a lousy onesided PC story. Would not surprice me if it ended with the words ",and DON'T do drugs!".
Remember he also did The Cartridge Family where Homer buys a gun to protect his family and joins NRA, driving Marge and the kids away from home whith his careless use of firearms :-)
(note that Matt is not against NRA, he is a member)
That show was not shown in some countries even though it in the end displays that the local members of the NRA in Springfield,?? are not a bunch of trigger happy dudes but cancels Homers membership.
This only shows the difference between the two series, where (in my opinion) "Proud Family" is nothing more than a money making scheme, The Simpsons has a lot more substance even though they got hit pretty bad by the PC wave.
No more will we see lines like this from Selma's Choice:

aluminum it would take five men to lift it. Twenty-two immigrant
laborers died during its construction.
Selma: Eh, there's plenty more where that came from.
-[ANTI_LAMENES_FILTER_INSTEAD OF NICE CLEAN SEPERATOR STRING HERE]-
Oh, I guess I got a bit carried away here. What I am trying to say here is that don't forget where the series are coming for and what do expect. C'mon Disney. The alltime fluffy feelgod company? The rewrote the ending of "The Little Mermaid", they would never have made true to the story of Hans Christian Andersen where she dies.
(on a totally unrelated note: everytime I sit down and try to write something serious /. craps out on me and have to wait for ages to log in again.
I have made it a habbit to cut'n'paste it before I press Submit or preview) -

Re:On Afghanistan
- Frankly, I think all this military buildup was indented primarily to scare Taliban into submission
I agree. I certainly hope that's all it is, anyway.
- This way you can have [the Afghan Northern Alliance] running show there, making sure that no terrorist camps are on their soil
And then we release wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards^W Northern Alliance. (Simpsons reference)
Actually, it's more likely (based on precedent) that we'll support the Northern Alliance until they have about half the country, then switch back to supplying the Taliban again for a while.
Anyone got info on this Northern Alliance? What are their principles? And what do they actually call themselves? "Northern Alliance" sounds suspiciously spin doctory. ("World War 2 Allies" / "Rebel Alliance")

Re:Bleh
Scott seems to have stolen the hammock idea too...
Hank: Uh, hi, Homer. What can I do for you?
Homer: Sir, I need to know where I can get some business hammocks.
Hank: Hammocks? My goodness, what an idea. Why didn't I think of that? Hammocks! Homer, there's four places. There's the Hammock Hut, that's on third.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Hank: There's Hammocks-R-Us, that's on third too. You got Put-Your-Butt-There?
Homer: Mm-Hmm.
Hank: That's on third. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot... Matter of fact, they're all in the same complex; it's the hammock complex on third.
Homer: Oh, the hammock district.
Hank: That's right.

Re:Secure EnvironmentHomer: Bart, you're coming home.
Bart: I want to stay here with Mr. Burns.
Burns: I suggest you leave immediately.
Homer: Or what? You'll release the dogs, or the bees, or the dogs with bees in their mouths and when they bark they shoot bees at you? Well, go ahead -- do your worst! [Burns slams the door and locks it] [disbelieving] He locked the door! I'll show him -- [rings the doorbell and runs away] -

You Go Now!
Whaaa? Man, how can someone screw up such a classic line!?
FIRST of all, its not Smokey the Bear, its Hosey the Bear.
And second, as you can clearly read here, the line truly is:
Hosey: You're not going to start any fires, are you?
Ralph: At my house, we call them, "uh-ohs."
Why oh why don't they avoid this by teaching Simpsons in school? -
Deep Space Homer
Solution is documented here.

Re:get ready to watch it...Might as well down your beers now. According to the article on IndiaWorld:
For a common man there is no need to worry. The next shower of comets is millions of years away. Before they cause mass extinction, mankind will destroy itself by pollution, rising sea levels, wars and possibly nuclear weapons.
Besides, as Homer said:It'll burn up in our atmosphere and what's ever left will be no bigger than a chihuahua's head.

Seppo? SEPPO? HOW DARE YOU INSULT US AMERICANS!(Ob-Simpsons reference)
*To an Aussie, a "Yank" (or "Seppo", the derivation of which is kind of amusing but a little difficult to explain) is a citizen of the US. While it's often prefixed with "crazy", "loony" or a variety of epithets, we're casting slurs on all US citizens rather than a subset
:)I'm sick of the way you Austrailians stereotype Americans! It's horrid! Let's give 'em the BOOT!

Re: In (spelling)See the relevant q and a in the Simpsons FAQ <http://www.snpp.com/guides/lisa-2.html#Q16> .
I could be mistaken, but I swear there was an episode in the last three seasons or so where somebody actually starts writing out the "Annoyed Grunt," and the spelling is definitely "D'oh." I'm not having any luck finding a reference for it, though.
Also, the OED is including the word, but I've seen nothing about the OED actually making mention of the Simpsons with respect to the word. I couldn't find the new words list at the OED web site.

Re:the first season was terrible
I agree, while the Simpsons became an excellent show later on in it's life, the early shows were pretty bad! But it still would be nice to have the entire library of shows at your disposal.
In related news, I noticed over at The Simpsons Archive a while ago that a Simpsons spin-off show is in the works. I'm hoping the focus is on the Wiggums. An entire show related to Clancy and Ralph would be great! -
Re:I'll believe it when I see itBush has already announced his intent to drill the fuck out of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.
No kidding. Personally, I think they should set up an offshore rig and hire Burns Slant Drilling Co. to get at the oil. Then the pretty animals can run around freely, and we get our oil! It's win-win!

Ultimate TVI can just see fat, bearded guys with ponytails across the world returning to places of purchase saying, "Yes, finally. I would like to return your quote unquote, Ultimate TV."
And being met with lines like, "Whoa, whoa. A fat, sarcastic Linux fan. You must be a devil with the ladies."
Thanks be to Matt Groening and the people at SNPP.

Startling revelation.
[Ballmer] calls Linux "a cancer that attaches itself in an intellectual property sense to everything it touches."
As usual, The Simpsons prophesied this long ago:
Chief Wiggum: Fat Tony is a cancer on this fair city. He is the cancer and I am the...uh...what cures cancer?
What's the significance? Does this mean Tux is an underground mafioso? Is Ballmer really a bumbling (and vain) enforcer of the old-world politics? Will Government eventually "triumph" in the face of Good Innovation (TM) [most horrible!], in a Fahrenheit 451 way, just as we will inevitably find a cure for cancer? Draw your own conclusions.
Mod only after you've thought about it.
Peace.
PS.
Note: Neither tea-leaves, the Qur'an, nor The Simpsons have been conclusively shown to predict the future in any prescient way, although frequently "predictions" are discovered after the fact in all three.
All time Simpson's quote: (From an episode):
Homer: These candidates make me want to vomit in terror!
And:
___: It makes no difference which one of us you vote for. Either way, your planet is doomed... DOOMED!
Brockman: [brightly] Well, a refreshingly frank response there, from Senator ___.

Who gives a shit about TiVo seriously? Come on now, really if this was "Beergut: News for Couch Potatoes" maybe this would be on topic.
It's on topic because:
- TiVo runs Linux. All Linux related news be posted even if the only Linux related part of the story is that the author bought Linus a beer in Cupertino five years ago.
- It's an intellectual property issue. All IP issues are on topic.
- Because Hemos said so.
- Because TiVo is hackable.
- Because a lot of nerds love Buffy, Star Trek, and The Simpsons.

FYI, Groenig is the guy who gave us the first couple seasons of "don't have a cow, man" and heads that throb when choked.
The genius behind the simpsons is George Meyer, a writer who was considered so good they kept him in the editing room practically full time so that he very rarely got actual writing credit for a show. Most of the good, unexpected gags are his.
Meyer and some of the other good comedy writers that made it good are no longer there. -

Re:Homer eats the fugu...
More info on Homer's close brush with death can be obtained from the transcript of this episode of The Simpsons.
-
More about the puffer......ripped from the link I posted just a couple of minutes ago.
It is fugu, a blow fish, that has the deadly nerve toxin in one of the internal organs (either the liver of gall bladder, I forget which). There are fugu restaurants in Japan, where the thrill of risking death by eating even a slightly tainted sliver of meat is the whole point of the experience.
You must be a licensed fugu chef to work at such a restaurant, but there are a number of "black market" fugu stands around, too.
However, fugu usually kills you within 15 minutes, not 24 hours. It starts with a tingling in the fingers, and works its way up your arms and legs, until you are completely paralyzed, and you die when it reaches your heart.
I'd guess that the fugu chef, and the doctor, were having a little fun at Homer's expense.
Spage Yee {sy}: This fish is poisonous because its innards contain tetratodoxin (TTX) which is a neurotoxin, which blocks either the sodium or potassium (one or the other it's been a while since I studied neurobiology) channels in your nervous system.
Michael T. Itamura refers the interested reader to the August 1984 issue of National Geographic. Stories and photographs of the leopard puffer. (Even a story about a famed Kabuki actor who ate the liver of the puffer and paid for it with his life). Quite interesting.
***
I'm actually watching tonight's episode (6:00p.m. where I live), 5F11, where the model UN gets stuck on the island - and Bart goes snorkeling to retrieve a cooler of food. There's a puffer fish waiting for him in the sunken school bus.

Ottawa/Hull (Quebec and Ontario) have distinct area codes (613,819) but we are NOT required to dial the area code -- undocumented feature; it's ok if we do. So dialing 613 555-2222 is just the same as 555-2222 on any side of the river. I expect we'll be told to add the area code soon...See here for more issues on Area Code splitting.
