Splashpower
There's a company commercializing a similar concept called splashpower. I don't work for them, although I have worked with them. It's really cool technology and, suprisingly enough, it's not vaporware.
Hopefully they'll actually have their modules out for public use sometime soon... -
Slashpads?
Isn't this kind of like Slashpads?

You need Splashpower!

Pity it's not ready yet...! -
Splashpower
Splashpower seems like another solution that may work for you. Wirelessly powers devices that you just sit on a tray. Since the recent article about wireless power that also mentioned this solution, I've thought about giving this a shot (as it seems more realistic).

Re:Tesla ALREADY did it 100 years ago ? so ?
Has no one else heard of similar technology from SplashPower http://www.splashpower.com/. I think MIT should check out the Cambridge spinoff before they go any further.

There used to be a cool Wireless transfer microwave kit on ThinkGeek.com but I can't find it anymore...
My room mate has one of those tooth brushes that charges wirelessly which it pretty cool. -
Re:Battery life
i recently read that a company had come out with a charging plate for electronic devices.

just drop your watch, your phone and your handsfree onto that at the end of they day and it will be ready for use the next morning :) -

A neat idea, not catching on though. -

Why is this modded funny? It's getting there.

very old newssplashpower demonstrated their new product three years ago on mainstream british TV on "Tomorrow's World".
their latest news page http://www.splashpower.com/news/latest_news.html shows they announced product in October 28, 2002: "Splashpower Announces Universal Wireless Recharging"
I would guess that their problem has been signing up the manufacturers of PDAs and cellphones to actually build-in their product, and to protect their intellectual property as it seems to be an obvious solution (just like many of the best inventions).
I once worked for one of the company's senior staff, John Halfpenny; he's a very smart guy, widely respected round Cambridge, a good businessman and knows his technology, so I've been following this product with interest.

Re:So stop whining and go upgrade your system
Of course, even if ou do go wireless to the tower, you still have to have wires for power, or battries. You can't transmit enough power through the air to power a device efficiently, and physics is the problem there, no amount of innovation will solve it.
I'm not disputing your point, but what if you plugged in your desk and had something like this built into it? -
Re:Wireless power!
This, perhaps?
(Yes, I know, it's very short range, but it's a step in the right direction, certainly.) -
Re:There goes that...
Not sure if this is related to what you were looking for, but SplashPower are making 'charging pads' that charge any (electrical) device as long as the battery is fitted with a kind of reciever. Unavailable in shops at the moment though, although apparently they're working with some unnamed companies for launch in 2005.

What ever happened to the cell phone charge pad?
I remember these were being touted a couple of years ago by Splashpower: link
My guess is these just take too long to charge your phone... or is there another reason these never caught on? -
A pointer to a generic solution...
SplashPower who seem to be making a more cross-device version of this.

Re:Rant.
And more semi-wireless power - splashpower

Re:Wireless Power is Ready
OK, maybe the computer itself is a little further down the road, and the LCD monitor is somewhere in between, but perhaps you'd like to place a wager on the rest:
A minute on Google shows it's available now: http://splashpower.com/
Surely a desk built around this technology isn't far off (or far out). End tables could even recharge wireless clocks, watches, and remote controls.
I even see them use the words "safe" and "efficient" repeatedly on the site. -
Re:SplashPad?
Check out the news section of their homepage. They've just secured $5.8 million in financing. Here's the Google provided HTML version of the PDF news release.

When *they* create wireless power, I'm definitely investing in their business.
