Re:You know what I think..
Indeed, in the past Brin issued an essay commenting on the relative merit of another small series of movies, the timing of which coincided neatly with the release date of a much-anticipated prequel.

[geek]ANH is episode 4!!!!!, and electrobinoculars are electronic image enhancers, they have nothng to do with oil. fun fact: electrobinoculars were never used in the movie, but were in a cut scene, luke originally watched the battle between the Tantive IV and Devastator above tatooine, that scene should be in the ultimate edition dvd. [/geek]But i havn't read the old novelization

It's been done
LEGO themselves sell a Star Destroyer set. It's got over 3000 pieces, is 3' long when completed, and costs damn near $300.

Re:I can imagine: Zero.
Actually if you read the back story on StarWars.com you'll see that the first one to discover the force was indeed a Skywalker.

Re:Additions to, complications of "the canon"?The SW Expanded Universe (i.e., any story in a medium that's not the films: games, comics, novels, TV) has always been rather consistent with the original trilogy of films, and elements that originated in the EU were incorporated into the prequel films (the name of the Republic capital planet from the Thrawn novels, a Twi'lek Jedi from the comics, other names from places like the Droids series). The few problems have had "continuity fixes" in place for a long time now. Moreover, LucasFilm Licensing has always strived to make the EU consistent with itself, and you'll see things like novels referencing game characters (like the main character from the X-Wing PC games being a prominent general in the last New Jedi Order novel).
This series is rumored to involve the Clone Wars, and LFL held a fairly large summit last summer to plot out the war's major events and decide in which medium they'll be covered. Episode III begins with the last battle of the Clone Wars, so there's no danger of something zany happening in the next film to throw out all the events being depicted in the interim. There's already been several post-AotC EU titles announced and released showing war events:
- Galactic Battlegrounds: Clone Campaigns (game)
- Clone Wars (game)
- The New Droid Army (game)
- Boba Fett: Fight to Survive and Crossfire (children's novels)
- Republic #49 and on (comic)
- Shatterpoint (novel)
http://www.starwars.com/eu/news/2002/11/news20021
1 15.htmlSW licensed stories/etc. are different from things like Trek in that they're edited rigorously precisely to prevent continuity problems. It's all meant to be one story (whether it's a good one or not varies from audience member to audience member).

see for yourself
the jedi archives
the trinity library
similar....hmm, kinda... -
Re:other architecture, too.
To be fair, though, the Vatican library is just a vaulted room, wheras - coincidence or not - this and this (the original post) are strikingly similar, even down to the far wall, the frequency of alcoves and the shape of the moulding between floors.
-
other architecture, too.
quoting from the "begind the scenes" section of the star wars databank on the jedi archives:
The stately architecture and vaulted ceilings of the Jedi Archives Room were inspired by a variety of real-world libraries, including the Vatican and those found in old English estates. A bare minimum of the set was constructed -- only Kenobi's immediate work area and several busts were constructed. The majority of the scenery -- the rows and rows of holobooks and high ceilings -- were realized as miniatures.
so if any inspiration came from dublin, it wasn't in full... -
Yes, it does!!
Yes, it's right here.
I don't know why they are complaining so much, I thought Episode 1 TPM was much worse. -
Re:Jango's head
His head most certainly did not fall out of the helmet - I was extremely disappointed
Well according to starwars.com, it did. I'm not sure if they made this non-obvious on purpose or if it was just inevitable that the shadow could be missed, but I didn't notice it on the theater either. The other possibility, but I don't have a link to back it up, is that the shadows were only in some versions of the film. I read somewhere that Lucas continued to tinker with the film after its release and that, depending on when the date that the particular piece of celluloid was made, the film was that version. For example, if a theater got theirs a few months into the run or had to get a new version of the film, they got the "latest" version. This is why no one can agree on the exclusive scene for the digital version (the scene was included since there's less lead time on manufacturing - it was included in later celluloid prints, whatever it was) and part of the reason Lucas wanted the film to be a digitial exclusive - so he could issue "patches". We already know that the version of AOTC playing in hotel rooms has some differences (a few longer scenes) and given that the rumor is that there's been 50 slightly different versions of the film in theaters, it'll be interesting to see which one makes it to DVD.

Re:Developing ideas
Just keep those pesky imperial units away from the project
You probably meant to keep these imperial units away from the probe device. But perhaps it would be just as well to keep these imperial units away too. -
Re:i wonder...
This seems to be saying it is. Using IMAX DMR, anyway. (not sure how that's supposed to stand for Digital reMasteRing, though).
-
Re:Pretty Skimpy on the Details
Check out starwars.com.
While they have not put up a list yet, they used to have a search engine to locate theaters with digital projectors (and other showing theaters as well).
It seems likely that they will do the same once the IMAX version starts playing.

Digital Clones Facts & Figures
According to this site, the average imax screen is 21.5m x 15.6m.
The resolution of 'Clones' was in the neighborhood of 2000x1000 (2.2 million pixels sony 24p)
We can assume it will be pan and scan (as all IMAX-conversions so far have been)--IMAX is 4:3.
Therefore, the vertical resolution will be about 1000 pixels per 15.6m, or 1.56 CM each. That's a pretty huge pixel. Ow. -

Re:NY Times needs to open up
Yeah, cheesy free stuff like this compared to the sophisticated, highly polished mass media for sale by the "professionals".
(Jesus H. Christ, the "offical" SW site is slower than the fan site run out of someone's basement!)
Face facts, "mass media", is dead. We want 20,000 indie bands, not Britney & Nsync. Hell, I'll go all futurologistical on you and say that mass production is obsolete. You heard it hear first! -

AT-AT modeled after elephant
In the Star Wars: Magic of Myth exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, I learned that the AT-AT's gate was modeled after that of an elephant. And distorted elephant noises mixed with slick highway traffic sounds were used to create the TIE Fighter sound effects.

Re:Not at allOne of the few things I believed in whatever Star Wars episode that was (New Hope?).
Return of the Jedi. Which features the impressive battle on the forest moon of endor. AT-ST were destroyed by a combined ewok and rebel alliance army. Methods used were logs, and ropes mainly. The AT-ST were tripped or smashed.
Empire Strikes Back. Battle on Hoth. Some AT-AT were destroyed by the Rebel alliance as the Empire moved in on their base. The Alliance managed to evacuate on time. Snow speeders harpooned the legs and then flew around the AT-ATs until they tripped over. Luke also destroyed one with his light saber and a grenade IIRC.

Silly submitter...
We must be careful with our Star Wars nomenclature. Both in tactical operation area (um, the woods), size, and appearance, this wood-cutting thingy most closely resembles an AT-ST, not an AT-AT. I think this may invalidate the numerous rebel grappling-hook jokes I see popping up. Unless that rope they used to trip 1 or 2 of the walkers in Return of the Jedi were grappling hooks....

Re:Peer-to-peer pioneer kills self
It's interesting watching your post get modded.
I just have two observations.
First, even though slashdot sucks, a lot of the people who post on it are truly righteous. I was very pleased to see that many people actually care about what happened to Gene Kan, and totally stunned to see the parent post get modded up to Score: 5 at one point.
Second, the administration of slashdot is totally corrupt. I watched as my three secondary posts got modded down within less than a minute. Given the traffic this topic is receiving at this hour, that is just bullshit. It's clear to me that some monkey at OSDN has unlimited mod power and that they just routinely run through the posts doing what they please.
If I want PDA ads, I'll go to ZDNet. If I want Star War spoilers, I'll go to starwars. And if I want to slum with overbooked whores who sold their collective ass for the chance to lick out any and every used condom thrown their way, I'll come to slashdot. -
Re:slashdot.org should be renamed spinroom.org
I think perhaps sheldon caught a major resentment when his mother was abducted and later murdered by a gang of Tusken Raiders, and rather than dealing with it, he has turned to the dark side...

Re:I thought she was dead.
i heard somewhere that what pushes anakin over the edge is obi-wan. anakin becomes fed up with being "underappreciated" (as he views it) and challenges his master to a duel. obi-wan knocks him into a volcano and only anakin's pure rage (and the strength it gives his dark side powers) saves him from dying, although his skin is damaged (hence the darth vader get-up). maybe i am mistaken...

How to add Padme to the original films
At the end of the third film, when she's hiding Luke and Leia, she changes her name to from Padme Armidala to Mon Mothma.
Leader of the Opposition becomes Leader of the Resistance. And there's enough similarity in appearance between the two of them to pull it off.
There you go, she's in the films, no need for CGI-Inserts, retroactive continuity or re-releasing yet another special edition to try to beat ET's all time box office record.
No wonder Lucas didn't think of it -

Re:Not 9 Movies. No, really. Just 6.As an addendum to the above post, here's a quote from the Star Wars FAQ on the official Star Wars website:
# Episode VII and Beyond
1. Wasn't Star Wars going to be nine or more parts? Will sequels be made set after Return of the Jedi?
Early on in the saga's development, some thought was given to have a trilogy set after Return of the Jedi. George Lucas has long since changed his mind, and the entire Star Wars saga will now encompass six episodes, starting with The Phantom Menace, and ending with Return of the Jedi. There will be no future Star Wars films set after Return of the Jedi.

At Seattle Cinerama, not digitally projected...
Just a small note to warn fellow Slashdotters in Seattle. I had the disappointing experience of getting up at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday to catch the 8:00 digital showing of Episode II downtown at the Cinerama, only to find that it wasn't digital. Funny, because it's on the list. Don't waste your money on this theatre expecting digital. (Sad that we don't have any other digital theatres here.)
Cheers! -
Link for accurate digital theater info.
Off-topic: I heard that AMC Empire 25 in NYC's Times Square has a digital projector. Anyone know if it's running Episode II in digital?
This page at starwars.com lists the theaters that are playing it in digital. The Wired article mentioned in the /. thread a few weeks ago was just plain wrong in many ways, so use this link instead.
Be warned, many theaters that are listed only have one digital theater but are playing AOTC on several screens, so you need to find out which times are for the digital screen.
Lastly, as you might expect, the digital ones sell out quickly. I went Friday for a noon matinee an hour and a half early only to find out all digital shows were sold out for 2 days! Bottom line you need to plan ahead or wait for the rush to subside. -
The root of the problem is obvious
I mean, really, if Supreme Chancellor Valorum had not been forced out by the Vote of No Confidence that Senator Palpatine talked Queen Amidala into calling for, the Trade Federation never would have been able to get this oppresive, freedom-crushing legislation through the Senate.
