Re:And yet...
>More to the point, the only way you can achieve a 50/50 split is to leave more than two-thirds of all computer science grads completely idle, and about 81% of all male CS grads unemployed.
Who knows? Maybe this is the direction in which we're heading. The latest draft of the ACM's code of ethics has made social justice and diversity hires a positive obligation of all computing professionals.
"Computing professionals should strive to build diverse teams and create safe, inclusive spaces for all people, including those of underrepresented backgrounds."
Also: "Computing professionals should consider whether the results of their efforts respect diversity, will be used in socially responsible ways, will meet social needs, and will be broadly accessible. They are
encouraged to actively contribute to society by engaging in pro bono or volunteer work. When the interests of multiple groups conflict, the needs of the least advantaged should be given increased attention and priority."More troubling: "leaders should encourage and reward compliance with those policies, and take appropriate action when policies are violated."
This is exactly what Google did. They awarded bonuses to people who criticized Damore on their internal fora.

Re: Normal
Studies are done on a population of billions with only a few hundred participants with an acceptable margin of error (385 participants nets a margin of error of 5% and a confidence level of 95% in a population of 3 billion); when you're only considering millions, a sampling of even a couple dozen will result in a statistically acceptable margin of error and confidence level.
To my point, a sample size of only 97 grants us a 10% margin of error given your proposed population of 160 million; my sample size is easily larger than that and my margin of error is nearer to 9% with a confidence level of 95%. That's pretty damn statistically significant.
Don't take my word for it; the math is well known and relatively simple, but there are also sample size calculators that can do the work for you. -

You should have shorted it right after you installed the app and say it was garbage. It's a real stretch to even call it a game. The user base is already declining.

Re:Where is the opinion survey ?
Here's our official survey. Thanks for contributing.
Will you be sharing the raw results of the survey, in, say, a week's time? I'd really like to see, for example, the percentage of people who prefer the new layout. I hope we don't just get a bland "we are using your feedback from our survey to make further enhancements to the UX".

Beta Feedback
I don't like the beta either and hopefully every story being full of complaints will help but don't forget to complain on the survey and answer the request for email based feedback too.
Survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/sdredesign
mailto:feedback@slashdot.org?subject=beta_feedback
Add comments to http://beta.slashdot.org/journal/634763/update-on-the-march-of-progress-how-slashdots-new-look-is-shaping-up -
Re:Beta Sucks!
I find the article interesting. But my interest in the article is eclipsed by my disdain for Beta.
The comments are harder to follow
The overall layout is not only ugly, but lacks the feel of /.
Pictures that are unneeded hog too much of the screen (though you can change on the front page, but are still forced to view the pics if you want to read comments or expand a story)
The default font size is too large
They didn't even use the same green as classic /.
there are more issues, but I don't want to go on...Please go to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/... which apparently was set up by slashdot to gather feedback on beta.
Let your voice be heard there too -
Survey response
The survey asks:
What do you like the most about Slashdot Beta?
My response: "It encourages me to find and read new sites."

Oh yes, with such unbiased options as:
How do you like the look and feel of Slashdot Redesign compared with the classic Slashdot site (www.slashdot.org)?
Significantly better
Better
About the same
Not as good.Which leads to "Well many [2] of our readers thought the site was significantly better, but the worst response was it wasn't quite as good as the old one"

Re:violation of trust
There is a diverse range of companies. Alternatives include Microsoft or Yahoo.
Yeah I'm sticking to Google too. Nothing prevents the alternatives from being worse.
Actually Google has pretty fierce competition these days from Bing, the caliber of Bings competitiveness is simply not acknowledged on Slashdot for religions reasons. While several recent studies have refuted Microsoft's BingItOn claim of two thirds of users preferring Bing results. Interestingly enough blind studies also suggest that that Bing actually delivers superior results to Google 41% of the time and 6% of the time they tied. Furthermore a lot of Bing's inferiority is largely perceived (i.e a 'halo' effect of the Google brand), people actually pick Bing results over Google results much of the time when you swap the brands on the search results. Myself I prefer Bing image results to Googles much of the time, the image search results from Bing often contain less noise.
That last link seems pretty negative at first but it also concludes:
There are two potential, contradictory reactions to the Ayers study:
It either conclusively or largely disproves the Bing preference claims;
* Putting aside the Bing advertising claims, the search engine performed relatively well vs. Google.
* Google won 53 percent of the time and Bing won 41 percent of the query tests, with a tie in 6 percent of instances. That suggests that Bing has the capacity to gain much more market share than it currently has (67 percent vs. 18 percent).Ayers points out that the more assertive "prefer Bing 2:1 claim has been replaced on the Bing It On website with the more limited claim that "people prefer Bing."
I remember when Bing's market share was far down in the sub 10% range not that long ago.

Google has this problem with their forms, too.
It's not just JotForms. Google is now the leading site being exploited to host phishing pages. Google has reasonable defenses against phishing for their "sites" product. However, Google doesn't seem to have those protections on their document and spreadsheet products. Here's a fake login form hosted by Google. That's been up since 2010. Here's a fake login page hosted as a Google spreadsheet. Google allows unlimited HTML in a spreadsheet, which means it can be abused in this way. We have a full list, if anyone is interested.
"formbuddy.com" and "surveymonkey.com" can also be abused in this way. Formbuddy seems to kick phishing pages off quickly. Surveymonkey, not so good at this.
If you offer free hosting, and don't have aggressive anti-phishing controls in place, you will be pwned.

Lost Revenue?
I see the figure of 17k as a particularly effective way of rebutting many of the so-called, inflated "lost revenue" figures we read/ hear.
Nothing quite says "you were never getting the money, anyway" better than offering them the chance to pay 2c, and having them pay the absolute minimum.
If you read this report and have trouble / get angry at the 17k, you're missed the point. The point is, some will NEVER pay for it. But hey, many will. They're the ones we're selling to. They're the ones suffering when we remove features / lockdown / DRM our software. I suppose it's easier to be optimistic when you're made 100k in a few days and the only opportunity cost was the realisation that a pirate is infact, a pirate though.
Personally, I wasn't interested in this game (played the demo), but I am interested in donating $2 to see that that the experience of using this model is furthered, so I'll definitely buy it, simply to show support. Much to the contradiction of popular gaming industry opinion, they haven't lost money by me not paying full price, they've gained $2 they would have never seen, otherwise.
If you scroll down to the bottom of this page and reload, you will just how quickly sales are occurring (and this represents only a fraction who take the survey, I believe). http://www.surveymonkey.com/sr.aspx?sm=MZpIFVRQn99e_2fJukiNVWR9Rm3Xg1MSQ85QQk09BNH3s_3d -

Help with a wi fi questionaire
Hey dudes and dudettes, Sorry to bother you during our long (and very wet!) summer holidays. As some of you know I am participating in the EDGE Programme 2008 and as part of the EDGE programme (http://www.scottish-enterprise.com/edge) at Glasgow University, I am researching an innovative business idea. For this, I am conducting a quick and easy 4-question survey of people's air travel habits for an exciting new service. The link for the survey is: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=3DllA5v3ecD6FQRpkhgeh_2fpg_3d_3d It takes literally 90 seconds, and would help us enormously. If you can find the time, your feedback would be great. From Sumeet University of Glasgow

Data mining headaches
This sounds like a reasonable solution. However I see some hurdles:
1. random discussions that don't provide a lot of detail or relevant data
2. discussions about historical events that generate lots of noise
3. as mentioned previously, issues of privacyIf someone is complaining about random symptoms on a discussion board, then receive a "complimentary" drug package in the mail from some big pharma company, it would just be too creepy.

Spam isnâ(TM)t just a big nuisance; itâ(TM)s big business as well. So why is spam persisting? Ferris Research estimates that spam will cost $140 billion worldwide in 2008, of which $42 billion will be in the United States alone. If you compare these numbers with Ferrisâ(TM)s 2007 estimates of $100 billion and $35 billion, youâ(TM)ll see that the cost of spam has increased substantially over 12 months. Mac Site Survey
This isn't exactly on-topic but if you're interested in this story and read Slashdot you may be the person I'm looking for below...
If you primarily use a Macintosh, work in an "information professional" capacity (this could be in a university library, a research environment, or the like), and have more than 1-2 Macs at your site, I could use your help. I work for a company whose name I can't disclose. Our development and QA staff are trying to get a feel for the Mac hardware, OS releases, office suites, and web browsers in use because our products are available for the Mac and interact with those things. I've got an unofficial survey online to help us figure out where to focus development and QA efforts to satisfy the market's needs best. Since I'm limited to a total of 100 responses, please help by only responding to the survey if your description matches what I'm asking for above. (You're welcome to forward the link to anyone who meets that description that you know at another site, but please include this message with it so I can - hopefully - only get appropriately targeted responses.)
If you could take a few seconds and complete the survey below it would be much appreciated:

Thanks in advance for your help. -

Recycle NYCThe Lower East Side Ecology Center is running an electronics recycling event today, coordinated by Manhattan Boro President Stringer, the NYC Council (City legislature), and the Upper West Side councilmember, Gale Brewer:
Electronic Recycling Drop-Off Event
Sunday, November 12th, 8am to 12:30pm
Lincoln Center - Service Road
We will accept working and non-working computers, laptops, monitors, printers, keyboards, mice, cables, TVs and VCRs(no wooden consoles only plastic case models), fax machines, cell phones and pagers.
Saturday, December 9th, 8am to 4pm at PS 321
180 7th Avenue, between 1st & 2nd Streets
Park Slope, Brooklyn
Sunday, January 7th, 2007, 8am to 4pm
4th annual 'After the Holidays' event at Union Square Park - North Plaza 17th St & Broadway
Brewer and Stringer are promoting a new City law, Intro 104, to require manufacturers to recycle products in a complete product lifecycle:Intro. 104, sponsored by Council Member Bill De Blasio, which would require manufacturers to collect discarded electronic products. Intro. 104, the Electronics Recycling and Reuse Act, would remove many of these products from landfills and incinerators currently used by the City of New York, as these products pose an environmental risk when burned, buried or recycled improperly.
The Council's Technology in Government committee is running a public feedback survey on recycling.

Re:Missing: Egan, Stross, Sterling
Agreed.
I would also add Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep.
I mentioned in an earlier comment that the poll was about as scientific as a
/. one as the survey choices had already been limited to ones suggested by readers of Jack Schofield's blog. Link to actual survey here. -
Re:What?! No J.R.R?!?!
I failed to mention in the submission that the poll was as scientific as a
/. one.In the ballot, you were limited to a pre-selected list.
-
If you look at the poll...
The results make a lot more sense if you look at the poll. Basically, this isn't a top 20 geek novels list, but a "which books have been read most often" list, picked from about 40 books chosen based on some random message board comments.
I mean, I consider Stephenson's books to be far more deserving of being labeled as a geek novel than the foundation, but I'm not going to label the foundation as being bad. -

Re:Microsoft Sends Linux SurveyI've seen official MS surveys on Survey Monkey before. It might not be the same dept. that uses the official MS site for surveys, but Survey Monkey technology has been used before.
There was a developer survey on Survey Monkey some time ago, definitely MS, but they don't want people to know about it when it's NOT on their tech, doesn't mean it's not MS. Notice similar style, where it's not explicitly MS but clearly some questions are MS oriented.
