Re:Does it have....
... centrino wireless networking drivers? ... NTFS drivers (read only ok) ... Mono/ASP.NET? ... an X config that supports 1920x1200 displaysAccording to the new features page it supports centrino and mono. NTFS (read only) was supported in 9.1. I'm not sure about the large display size. Did you have issues with that display setting in other versions/flavors?
Does anyone know the differences between the boxed retail version and th e ftp install version?
-
Re:huh?
Maybe it is the only one that has a 2.6 kernel that doesn't leave your box open to attack? You need 2.6.8 or later, as IP Tables in earlier versions is broken. Better yet, only use an OS that has pf ported to it if you are going to expose your box to the Internet.
I don't do Linux, so I wouldn't know which distros have it. -
Re:SuSE
well then ur a fucktard cuz you can get the iso here, here, and here. And if you'd like, you can even look at this HTML page on Suse's website which shows you the same links.
maybe you should become better informed before you start bitching about something that is clearly the result of your stupidity. loser. -
Re:Mmmmmm...
Hmm.
I wasn't aware of that. By checking here, it'd indeed seem there's something of the sort goingon. But there is no mention of SUSE moving to States... so one could assume the programmers etc are still german?
In the end, who knows - after all, I don't think there are (m)any companies left out there which could be considered exclusively one-nation-owned? -
no personal any more
there is no more personal build for 9.2 and above.

SUSE 9.2 Personal?
Does anybody know if they're going to release a Personal version for download, just like they did for 9.1? Also, is it actually necessary to purchase 9.2, or could I just download the new RPMs for my 9.1?

THE NEXT STORY ROCKS!
Posted by michael in The Mysterious Future!
from the if-you-love-something-let-it-go dept.
InnerPhalanx writes "Today, SuSE 9.2 Professional Edition has been released. SuSE writes: 'It combines a fast, secure operating system and more than 1,000 popular open source applications. It is the first complete Linux package to harness both the improved Linux kernel 2.6 and the recently enhanced GNOME 2.6 and KDE 3.3 user desktop environments. Ideal for Linux enthusiasts and developers, SUSE LINUX Professional 9.2 improves support for mobile users and delivers a host of essential tools.' More information at the SuSE website. The price is $89.95. The update version is $59.95. A live DVD image is also available on the SuSE website, for use by DVD. Have fun, SuSE Pro users!" Reader tannhaus submits an early review. -
Re:Future partnerships...
Suse certainly seem to be gaining ground quickly and I think one of the main reasons may be the complete range of products from Suse Personal through to Enterprise
Don't think that Suse won't turn their back on the little guy. In fact the free Suse Personal is no more. This effectively means I likely won't ever have Suse on a desktop or server ever again since I'm not going to buy before I try. Now there's no way to try without paying. -
Re:Future partnerships...
But, if I'm not mistaken, Suse Enterprise Server 9 requires a license to use YOU (YaST Online Update) to download updates and patches.
And that's not free ( nor cheap for me... but of course, it's an "enterprise" "server").
I wonder what are the terms of the license in this (Dell) case. -

works for me!
Just downloaded it by adding this as a resource to SuSE's YaST. It got rid of some really annoying bugs in KDE 3.3.0 as far as I can see so far. Also the beginnings of GMail support are there (thanks David Faure) although this is not complete.
I'm using KDE for a couple of years now and it's really the best!

Several supported Linuxes run on Macs. Yellow Dog Linux 4.0 just shipped.
Ubuntu is shipping PPC in its upcoming 4.1 release, and has PPC ISOs as recent as last month.
Mandrake and Suse have downlevel versions for PPC.

This suse website says the the minimum specs for SuSE 9.2 will be:- Pentium 1
- 128 MB RAM
- 500 MB HD

Re:WirelessBollocks. Read the effing article first, my friend. SuSE 9.2 requires 128Mb of main memory. 256Mb is recommended.

Re:Exchange ?Since this happens to be an article about SUSE, I thought it might be on topic to point to their OpenExchange Mail Server. I haven't used it personally, but the site claims you can use Outlook against it. http://www.suse.com/us/business/products/openexch
a nge/index.htmlSUSE LINUX Openexchange Server 4.1 is the trend-setting groupware and communication solution that helps your company to progress - with superior technical features, far-reaching hardware independence, smooth migration, and a wide range of supported clients including Outlook clients from Outlook 98 and various web browsers. For All Requirements On the basis of standardized protocols and Open Source components, SUSE LINUX Openexchange Server offers everything modern enterprises and organizations need for communication: e-mail server, web server, groupware, collaboration, and messaging. Thanks to its modular architecture, SUSE LINUX Openexchange Server can be customized for diverse needs. Depending on the customer requirements (number of users, way of utilization, deployed hardware, etc.), SUSE LINUX Openexchange Server can be deployed in environments ranging from 10 to 2,500 users.
... and All Budgets A fair license policy is a hallmark of SUSE LINUX. Thus, the e-mail core functions of Openexchange Server are free of license fees, and the license fee for the groupware is lower than that of most competitor products, as numerous independent studies show. -
Re:Which version of 2.6???
No, not that version.
Distribution kernels typically add a number of patches to the vanilla version in order to better meet the needs of their users. This includes features like lkcd or external filesystems, but more importantly, it means that it has critical bug fixes that weren't released into a vanilla release kernel.
The SUSE Linux 9.2 kernel carries the version number of 2.6.8, but is actually based on 2.6.9-rc2, with critical bug fixes beyond that. Since 2.6.9 isn't yet released, it would be inaccurate to call the kernel 2.6.9, but it's hardly vanilla 2.6.8.
You can see just what's in the kernel by checking out SUSE Kernel of the Day, which is built from the CVS tree, and picking the appropriate subdirectory under there. -
You're making stuff up...
From the SuSE site:
Main memory: At least 128 MB; 256 MB recommended
And that's probably for the default kde desktop install. If you use something lighter you should be ok with less memory.
And, of course, it will probably install even if you're running on much less than the minimum req. -
Re:X.org
Yes indeedy. They have early RPM packages posted on their FTP server which I've used, and the extensions are present. I haven't tested XDamage, but Composite works.

Re:ATI DriversEven though my general experience is that ATI drivers have traditionally been a little dodgy, I've gone with SuSE because they have their own special fglrx drivers and instructions which don't involve quite as many steps as the normal methods of installation... plus you don't have to recompile the whole thing. My experience with games on ATI is as follows:
- FLGRX 3.7: Screensavers work fine, but that's about it.
- FLGRX 3.9: Winex still crashes, UT2004 still crashes, but Neverwinter Nights runs fine, with a few bugs.
- FLGRX 3.11 (what I use currently with a mobility FireGL T2): NWN runs beautifully with all the bells and whistles (1024x768 at 32 bit). UT2004 runs okay at 1024x768x32 with some high quality textures and dynamic lighting @ ~28 FPS (UT2004 used to crash a lot on my ATI-based setups, but it seemed to stabilize with the UT2004 3323 patch). Winex still barfs on me
- FLGRX 3.14.1: This is the latest and greatest(?) driver you can get for SuSE. Prelminary testing shows Alien Swarm runs decent now, but Winex still barfs on me. I will try the Doom installer later today, and respond with my own benchmarks on a 2GHz T42 Thinkpad with 2G and a 128MB Mobility FireGL T2.
If you just follow SuSE's instructions at the link I provided, you should be fine.

Re:Totally off-topic, but need Linux advice....
For the least painless install possible, try MandrakeLinux. It also is very stable once set up. However, it does many things for the user (eg, partitions), so may find you'd like to be more hands-on. SuSE is a good distro to start on too, as it also has a pretty painless install.
Also, if you plan to dual-boot (Linux/Windows), PartitionMagic is a must. -
The ATI drivers are bad, but not *that* bad
I gathered some experience with the ATI drivers on Suse 9.1 recently and i too think that they're bad, but it got a little better lately.
While there *is* an "auto-installing" driver-package from ATI you'd better avoid that (unless they fixed a good number of bugs). Just running the package resulted in an error for me, googling around i found some hints and managed to install them: run the package in extract-mode, make manually, ignore error, make install accompanied by some messing with /usr/src/linux/.config.
there is also (for Suse 9.1) an rpm-package. Following the README in that path closely will get the video driver installed. Like nvidia ATIs driver combo too consists of a kernel driver and a n X-driver, and as usual the kernel-driver is a little fiddly to install. There is *no* (longer?) need to compile a custom kernel, you need to install the kernel source though (and really, read the README!).
Be careful though when configuring the XF86config. fglrxconfig is *not* a good idea since it asks you about mouse settings, monitor modes and whatnot, things that are running perfectly well and shouldn't be touched anyway. NVIDIA does a much better job just telling you the few lines you have to change in the config, fglrxconfig produces an XF86config-4 that is mostly useless and contains heaps of garbage.
To make the kernelmodule load automatically add two lines to the "modprobe.conf.local" (i think the first is unnecessary):
install fglrx /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install fglrx && { /sbin /modprobe nvidia_agp; /bin/true; } alias char-major-226-0 fglrx
In XF86config load "glx" and "dri" in the Modules sections and put
Driver "fglrx"
Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no"
in the device section. If you've got access problems put:
Section "DRI"
Group "video"
Mode 0666
EndSection
After restarting the X-server (twice to be sure, and check if the kernel module loaded) "fglrxinfo" should tell you something about ATI (and not Mesa), if that works do a "sync" for good measure and try tuxracer.
In my experience the nvidia-drivers are definitely easier to install, but it's really not impossible to get the ATI-stuff running. -
Re:ID 10 T Problem
Yes, IMO the short supply of qualified linux admins is the real problem. This underscores the need for a widely recognized certification in linux. I deride MCSE's as McSoftware Engineers, but that certificate does require a certain level of competance with that given software: a company hiring an MSCE guy can be assured that he can do basic MSCE stuff with Windows. To MS's credit, this is a good thing. I realize that there are linux certifications available (e.g. http://www.redhat.com/training/rhce/courses/, http://www.suse.com/us/business/services/training
/ certification/index.html, http://www.lpi.org/), and that's great. Businesses should be aware of this, and should require some level of certification in linux--otherwise, it's like the wild west. -
Re:Sun vs. EverybodyOf course, SuSE has the similar problems in putting proprietary programs into its distribution.
<Sigh>
Here we go again.
It seems that every time someone mentions SuSE on Slashdot, we hear the same 2 reasons why it's a Bad Distro (TM). The first is that it's not totally *free*. And, while I'm at this, I'll just head off the second: that there's no downloadable ISO image.
As to the first, Novell released YaST under the GPL almost as soon as they bought SuSE. You can read about that here. As to the second, you can download the personal edition here.

Re:I have a question for Microsoft.
-
Bring it on.Seriously, I hope MS checks every copy of XP and shuts down every pirated version. Maybe then people might realize that they have a choice when it comes to operating systems that don't cost a lot of money.
I really wonder if MS would so have such a lax attitude towards piracy if GNU/Linux wasn't around? I'm guessing no. To many, an easily obtained, free pirated copy of XP is better than a truly free copy of GNU/Linux. Something MS is banking on since they are better off keeping eveyone possible away from GNU/Linux even if it digs into the short term bottom line.

Re:Conservative and don't like Debian?
You might be able to convince them based on the licensing and service costs. Try making it a business case, exposing how much would it cost to have inhouse support for Debian vs Novell support for Suse. Be realistic, don't be quick at dismissing the costs of inhouse support for Debian. If you can, get some of the folks at IBM to back the feasability of the case, telling that, though unsupported, they dont forsee any trouble.
Depending on how critical the production end of your environment, you might be able to pull it off. Always bear in mind if for any reason the tested scripts will not run on the production end, the excrement will be flying your way. This decision might come to haunt you later if you keep your current employer.

It looks like the total updates would be about half of that CD. And that would be full replacement RPMS. The patches seem to be only slighty smaller. And these are replacements RPMS for ALL possible installed packeges. Suse like most distros ships everything in rpms, but none installs all of them. I mean how many people install every Database, Every Development toolchain (that gnu ada compiler rocken your world?), Every desktop gui.. no one. Just as most people you have taken a small data point and whipped it into a full misunderstading. Statistics Lie, and Liers use Statistics. My Stat proff told me that, still true. -

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Please show your support for Ceren in this poll of Geek Babes!
Is it any wonder people think Linux users are a bunch of flaming homosexuals when its fronted by obviously gay losers like these?! BSD has a mascot who leaves us in no doubt that this is the OS for real men! If Linux had more hot chicks and gorgeous babes then maybe it would be able to compete with BSD! Hell this girl should be a model!
Linux is a joke as long as it continues to lack sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. Don't you wish the guy in this pic was you? Are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?! Wouldn't this just make your Christmas?! Yes doctor, this uber babe definitely gets my pulse racing! Oh how I envy the lucky girl in this shot! Linux has nothing that can possibly compete. Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Wouldn't this be more liklely to influence your choice of OS?
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!

Re:$50 for a keyboard
According to this, it also ships with a copy of SuSE Linux 9.1.
If it's a boxed version, which I assume it would be, Personal retails for $29.95 US, and Professional for $89.95 US.
That means you either get the keyboard for $20 US, and a copy of SuSE 9.1 personal, or $40 US off the price of 9.1 Pro, with a keyboard thrown in for free. I'm betting on the first one, personally.... -
Re:Fedora ??!!??
Under these conditions, you want a distribution that can be freely downloaded, burned and redistributed without restrictions or problems. Fedora fits that bill and is targeted towards the desktop.
As is SUSE. Therre is a Personal edition that is targeted purely as a desktop. It does not have any servers or 'make' on it. It is targeted at those who want to run Linux with as much ease as possible.
I know that most people here will want to have 'make' and servers on their machines. Most people here are also not in need of the said explanation on how to run and are not likely called 'Joe-consumer'when it comes to computer use.
Naturaly SUSE offers also other means of instalation and if the enduser wants it it can provide a boxed set with nice manuals in them. -

Re:Uh... Fedora?
i switched to suse linux from windows, without any prior exprience in linux. i just picked up a copy from a best buy near me (an older one, but still...) for $10. there's lots of software built for it in
.rpm's and it doesn't have a website-based update! you can get an .iso from here. have a lot of fun! -

Re:This might be nice...Successfully upgraded my SuSE 9.1 Pro desktop from KDE 3.2.1 to 3.3 with the suse-rolled RPMs released today.
I guess now I'm supposed to feel guilty and unl33t when hairy upgrades like this are made so damn easy.

Re:How can MS keep a straight face when it says th
Because:
1) they are talking about Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), not the price of the software. TCO is hard to measure. It includes hiring flunkies and MS flunkies are cheaper than Linux flunkies. Of course, you need fewer.
2) you need more than the server OS, you need database, groupware, developer tools and workstations. While Linux is free, Oracle isn't.
3) supported Linux distros aren't free.
