Re:wikipedia: List of mechanical keyboards
You might like the VE.A keyboard ( https://www.massdrop.com/buy/v... but at this point you're looking at second hand) or the clone that is readily available (if you're slightly adventurous) on TaoBao ( https://item.taobao.com/item.h... ) -- It was the first mechanical keyboard I moved to after years using MS Natural keyboards. I have since moved on to using a self-made ReDox keyboard https://github.com/mattdibi/re... but that might be a step too far for you at this stage.

Re:US NEXT? HAHAHAHAHHA
Three thousand to six thousand bucks for a fucking bicycle?
I know that these bikes exist and you are not exaggerating, but that's not the price they are paying on these bikes.
Taobao is a Chinese eBay, here is a search for electric bycicles. Have a look on what they have for less than 300USD (~2000CNY).
More than a grand really is fucking ridiculous, common Chinese people would not afford it. The problem in the US is that these bikes are being targeted at smugs. Sell bikes for $150 and decent scooters for $300 like in China and you'll see a lot of people buying just to give it a try. -
Missing Something
So I see the copter starting to land infront of the apartment building in the video and then it cuts to her drinking the tea. How long does the copter wait before taking off again? Does it or somebody notify her that its waiting outside? How can they be so trusting to land it in that location without visual? Hitting a tree seems inevitable.

Re:So you can reuse the PC board?
Well, what's the point when you have this:
http://item.taobao.com/item.ht...quad core, 8GB of RAM, HDMI, etc. All you need for
... 35 USD! -
TL-WR703N
Why wouldn't you just buy a TL-WR703N that runs OpenWRT, is cheaper, available now and includes a case and PSU? http://item.taobao.com/item.ht...

Re:Seriously?
Alibaba? That's for foreigners who want to pay too much! The locals use Taobao. Some listings are likely to be bogus but the $400 was the local street price, online there are some real cheap deals. The USD buys 6.13 RMB so you can see a bicycle form factor for under $200 at http://item.taobao.com/item.ht... or this more scooter style one starting from $85 http://item.taobao.com/item.ht... but there is probably a catch with that second one.
My original post was referring to the more popular traditional scooter style that appear to listed for $200 to $360 typified by this on http://item.taobao.com/item.ht.... These things are everywhere and are a lot of fun to ride, just too slow for my taste.
Can't afford a Tesla and don't want to wait for the cheaper model then this electric car can be yours for $1750 http://item.taobao.com/item.ht.... Note the fan on the dash, it includes air-con! Shame it is probably illegal in most countries. They are not common here as most people step from the e-bikes to a conventional car. Personally I drive the petrol BYD F0 which was so very cheap for a quality car and I have seen the BYD E6 which is a serious electric car that should make the Japanese manufactures nervous. -

Available on Taobao
A quick search on Taobao (the number one Chinese online market place) yields more than 60000 results for 'xbox':
http://s.taobao.com/search?q=xbox&commend=all&ssid=s5-e&search_type=item&sourceId=tb.index&spm=1.6659421.754896237.1&initiative_id=tbindexz_20140108People that want one can easily get one. Same for satellite dishes, which are illegal in China, but nevertheless easily seen on most apartment buildings in Beijing.

Re:Avoiding Amazon
Enter the numerous Chinese online retailers. End consumers cannot shop at alibaba.com, but anyone can buy those large minimum orders and resell on ebay.
Alibaba is not a shopping site. It's a business to business trade site, that's very different. You don't place orders over Alibaba, you search for suitable suppliers there, then contact them directly, and negotiate a deal with them. After the first contact, Alibaba is usually out of the equation. They make their money with listing fees, not by sales commission like ebay does.
If you are looking for a Chinese alternative to ebay, try taobao. You will have to be able to read Chinese of course, but that's where the Chinese go for online shopping, and where Chinese individual retailers put their goods up for sale.
-
Re:this is the reason - idiotic story
Go there. That's owned and operated by AliBaba. It's Amazon on steroids.
What if you don't speak Chinese?

Re:$50 for 8 gig is a terrible deal
Frankly, mod parent up. A simple check on taobao shows that the first price for a 8GB USB key is around 25 Yuan, or about 4 USD, which is 10 times less than the 50 USD difference. So yes, $50 for 8GB really is a terrible deal.

Re:I'm surprised it's such a problemUh...you know how a flashlight beam spreads out when you turn it on? Like, the opening of the flashlight is an inch wide but you shine it on the wall and it's two feet wide? Yeah, that. A laser is just a flashlight. When you shine it on an aircraft, the beam spreads out and can easily blind the pilots. You don't need to aim accurately, and if you did, taping the laser to the side of a hunting rifle and using the scope would work great.
I'm actually surprised there hasn't been more of this, seeing how easy it is. Not just on airplanes, but on the road as well. I can see some gangsters making cars crash for their gang initiations. It's a matter of time, I suppose, it'll happen eventually. US import restrictions help, but on Taobao, the Chinese eBay, you can get a 10000mw handheld laser for a few hundred bucks. The whole world knows US border security is a joke, anyway.

Re:Optical drive?
No people don't setup linux just to run things under WINE that would be rather stupid. They do however use WINE to run proprietary windows apps, such as MS Office (which is usually installed from a CD) and Windows Games (which often have CD based DRM). This is the whole purpose of WINE which is apparently a very popular application with a big following and which I have seen used by a number of users.
No, people don't do that. Linux users use OpenOffice. As for games, we have a different experience, but none of the people I know running Linux are interested by games using WINE (some use PS3 / Wii though... which are a much better platform if you ask me).
I don't need to repeat myself again on the ease and cost of CDs vs. Flash drives, however you would be surprised how easy it is to install an OS these days compared to knowing how to change BIOS settings. FYI I have no problem with this, but I know many users who would.
I don't know how others are getting their USB keys, but for me, I got about a dozen that have been given for me as company gifts (various conferences and all). I never saw anyone giving CDRW as gifts. Even if you didn't have it as a gift, then it's really cheap: it starts at 2 USD for a 2GB!!!
http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=12464357480 (and no, I'm not Chinese...)
So yes, continue your rant about CDs being cheaper if you like, but you're being either a fool (considering the price of the reader and the fact that CDs breaks so fast), or extremely stingy. FYI, 15 Yuan is a bit more than 2 USD.
I guess absolutely everyone using a computer holds at least one USB key anyway. These days, the smallest you will find is 1GB, which is really enough for setting-up an OS (the Debian netinst for example needs less than half of that). The only point with CD, is when you have DRM attached with it, but it's slowly fading away: if you are a company selling software and don't have the option to have your product bought online, you are 10 years in the past and will soon discover that you are loosing money fast... even worse if your competitor really is selling online. At this point I'm beginning to wonder if English is your native language as you don't seem to understand it very well, otherwise you must be trolling.
What a jerk! At this point, I have no doubt that you are an intolerant USA native.

Re:Commentary on the Dollar?
So long as it's a "hi-Phone" and clearly not an "iPhone," I don't see what your problem is, or why this is a story.
As for the "lying, theiving, completely dishonest Chinese" nobody is forcing Apple to put their manufacturing there.
Are you telling me that this is not an iPhone clone:

Better than the real article would be the real product listings. It's here somewhere:

Possible details from AppleInsider
Last month, a user posted a forum comment stating, "I am going to tell you the truth about what has been going on with your account." The anonymous user then explained, "let’s say you are a Chinese guy or girl with an iPhone or iPad and you want to get some music, movie or app. How you do you do it? You go to http://www.taobao.com/ The (by far) largest online market in the world and type iTunes in the search bar. Immediately you will be presented with a list of more than 7,000 items.
"You want to save money, so you filter the list to show only items under RMB25.00- (US $3.60) and still you have more than 3,600 offers. So you pick some one at random like, as an example, this one: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=5516054242. You open the online chat and you transfer him RMB22.00 (US $3.20). He ask you in the online chat to provide a new iTunes account name and password, and you comply: User: qiuwge3foe3333@yahoo.com Password: qwer34567
"He asks you to wait 10 minutes online. He has already a number of user accounts under surveillance, so he enters in the iTunes account of his victim, change his/her username and password to the one you provided, and come back to ask you try it and approve the transaction so Taobao.com releases his money. Even if you cant read Chinese you can see very clearly in his item description that this account will not last more than 24 hours (the time for his victim to see the charges mounting and then cancel the credit card).
"He claims that he selects 'his' accounts so you can drain at least US $250.00 from them before they get cancelled. He urges you to be fast and buy and download as fast as you can. Start immediately! Keep the download going on for the full 24 hours! There is no warranties on how long it will last! Because he already changed the username and password, the victim can’t stop you.More details here though so far there's no explanation of how the accounts are getting hacked.

Video in action
Video of cengwang ka in action here. Someone whose mandarin is better than mine will have to provide a translation. "Mee-ma" means password. Heck, I might get one just to use it in airports and other places where jerks charge for internet. Evidently they are illegal as taobao.com (the Chinese ebay) doesn't list them while a simple google search turns up dozens of vendors. I'll have to check on these next time I go to the computer market.
Another notable aspect of this story is that it's actually accurate. China is a blank slate to most Westerners and I have seen journalists fabricate the most outrageous lies simply because it "fits the narrative" (narrative=preconceived ideas). No surprise the guy who wrote this was in Beijing, it's like the world ends for journalists outside the fifth ring road.

Re:Capitalistic open source super cool
+2 insightful? WTF? Shanzhai manufacturing is RIPPING OFF OTHER PEOPLE'S IDEAS, it has nothing to do with innovation, open source, etc. You think a Shanzhai manufacturer is going to let me into his factory and inspect his line? Maybe he'll post his CAD drawings and mold milling specifications on the web? Make a forum post where he reveals the specific material he uses, his suppliers, and the prices and contract terms he got from them? You want to see what shanzhai manufacturing makes? Crapity-crap like this janky fake Wii. I guarantee there's no way it will last more than six months, guarantee it. It's not open source at all, free flow of ideas? If by free flow, you mean one-way flow - to the shanzhai guy and not the other way around. It's "let me rip you off, make a cheap crap copy, add a couple of features from OTHER people's work (features that are probably not well-thought-out, nor integrated well with existing features) and sell it at a discount by disobeying all environmental regulations (China DOES have them), and forcing my workers to work overtime for free otherwise I'll fire them and have them beaten by thugs if they complain. I know more manufacturers than you do, buddy.

Re:"Land of the Free"You're an idiot. Sorry but it's true. Especially if you live in China (as I do) you really have no excuse for thinking the government's actions are on the same scale of repressive as cell phone lock-in. Anyway both China and the US give people the option of using or not using locked cell-phone contracts. It's just more prevalent in the US.
And you can get iPhones in China - they just don't do Chinese support, so it would be silly to.
