Re:They changed the d/l mgr kbd shortcut
I would recommend the keyconfig extension. It allows you to change the shortcut back to Ctrl+E. After its installed, look for the preference "key_openDownloads" and change it to accel+E.

Re:IMPORTANT ! Save your bookmarks. IT DELETES!!!!
You know what would be really good? Every web browser using the same bookmark directory. Then you could switch from one to the other and they would all stay in sync. Phwoar.

Easy to do if you know how. I use this. -
Re:I miss from Mozilla...
These are keywords. If not there, I think you can find a link at Firefox Help.
There is one in the default bookmarks file with the keyword "google" (it's under Quick Searches, I think), but you may as well just change it to "g".
I used keywords for the longest time (still do for a lot of things), but in the last few months I've started using the search box for Google / Pubmed / Vivisimo. It's quite useful-just press ctrl+K and type in your query, as opposed to ctrl+L (or alt+D) for the location bar. -
Re:Adblock
I find this to be much better.

BugMeNot ExtentionDon't forget about the Firefox BugMeNot extention. Very useful.
If only sites like these were hosted on some sort of P2P network where any browser could access it, but the 'site' could distribute load across many hosts (and have differing information -- bad that it's not global and constant, but good that it's not controlled and thus can always exist -- an acceptible trade-off).

Re:Call me when they let me open an .exe file.
I'm tired of having to copy links to new drivers or utilities and paste them to IE to open them.
Check out the "open with IE" extension then.
Right clicking a link gives you the option to open it with IE, and the same goes for the page you are viewing.
While you're there, check out all the extensions, there are lots to choose from that extend the functionality of Firefox and make it exactly the browser you want. -
Re:Forgive the ignorance...
Not quite. It is only a browser, but the plugin structure and all that is different from Mozilla. Firefox is based on the Mozilla source, but it's been gutted and reworked to be leaner and meaner, and a lot of things have changed, so plugins and skins have to be Firefox-specific. However, it's tons faster than Mozilla and much smaller, too, and there are already tons of skins and plugins for it. The authoritative resource for Firefox skins/plugins is here, and more are being ported every day, so chances are, if there's a plugin or skin you love for Mozilla, you can find it for Firefox.

Re:Big dealOnly problem I see is the way firefox works in linux (KDE) vs windoze (esp the backspace key). guess, I just need to learn to use alt-arrow
Or you could just download the keyconfig extension. With it, you can assign whatever key you want for 'Back'.

Re:Downloading The Old Theme
> The old theme, Qute, is now available from Arvid Axelsson's site.
Yep, just right click this link: http://www.quadrone.org/graphics/Qute/Qute.jar and select "Copy Link Location".
Then go to http://www.texturizer.net/firefox/themes/#install, paste the link into the "Remote URL" box on the right, and click Install.
Ahh... sanity restored. -
Re:Very clean!
Take a look at Session Saver. This will save sessions states (including tabs) if the browser crashes or if you choose to (File->Save Session).

Better still...

Flash in Firefox
See the Firefox FAQ.

here's a link to the theme itself
It looks very nice!! (a work in progress, and this maybe an older version).

Re:opera vs firefox?
Extensions, my friend. For example, there's a user agent switcher that you can customize. there's also a lot more on that page of course, and for the other stuff there's the about:config mentioned in another reply.

Re:Examples of some sneakier popup methods
Ok. I figured it out. When I used a fresh profile, the mouseover does work. My profile in FireFox 0.8 had TabBrowser Extensions installed and that extension by itself prevented the mouseover popup and that is why I never saw anything when mousing over.

Re:FireFoxThere was a tweak for your user preferences listed on the site (along with some other useful tweaks) That blocked banner ads by preventing adserving pages displaying images.
It's very effective, although doesn't prevent ads being downloaded. It's rather amusing, seeing something that says "advertisement: " and then... nothing.
Once again, "FIREFOX >> YOU," adservomg piece of trash. -

Ads? What ads?
Firefox with this code blocks most ads.
-
Re:Ads on Slashdot
I don't see any ads... Whare you talking about?
Oh, you must not be using firefox and
This
Actually I can't blame anyone for taking any money for advertising. Advertising is like free money. Someone gives you cash and you give them almost nothing in return. Especially as people like me who block every ad in ever medium (I don't watch television and am stilly trying to block radio ads). Don't blame the messenger, they're just doing their job and getting a free ride. If you think about it, they're probably ripping MS off. I mean, who reads Linux Today that doesn't know that MS Sux0r? -

Re:Why?
Ugh... I think a such site shouldn't be visited at all!
;-)Anyway, with the User Agent Switcher extension for Mozilla/Firefox you are able to choose the behavior of your browser. The website will think you are IE/Opera/Netscape...
Cheers.

I wonder where I can try that out
I wonder where I can try that out... It seems that in the past few months I have adblock'ed all flashes on the sites I usually visit

Re:Gloomy... _TOO_ gloomy...Oh, really?
Granted, it doesn't have all the features of the IE version (no PageRank-o-meter, for one - although I'm not exactly crying in my beer over that one) but it's out there...

Re:one point against Moz but few against firefoxI also don't like firefox's lack of Ctrl-Enter in new tab thing, as well as some auto-appending www /
.com thing. (try typing slashdot.org into firefox and it will try to go to http://www.slashdot.org.com/.really is a more mature product.to open a url in a new window it's ALT+ENTER.
to open a url such as "cnn" and add ".com", use CTRL+ENTER
to open a url such as "sourceforge" and add ".net", use "SHIFT+ENTER"
to open a url such as "slashdot" and add ".org", use "CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER"Feel free to criticize after you RTFM.

Re:Needs vs. Profit
Link!
I got this extension just a couple of days ago, and 'tis loads of fun. I don't know how it stacks up to , ahem, "professional" design tools like Frontpage and Dreamweaver, but compared to my design platform of choice (Emacs) it greatly speeds up the hunting of weird CSS glitches. -
Re:Speaking of the download manager
There's a nice download extension for FireFox 0.8 which shows the downloads in a status bar at the bottom of the browser. It shows Download progress and then you can either open the download folder or launch the downloaded item when done.

These preferences are easily found
using a little bit of google and the filter in about:config
to get external apps to open new tabs, follow these directions:
(granted it should be an on/off option but we're still pre-1.0)
to get links to open in a new tab even if they should open in a new window:
set: browser.tabs.opentabfor.linkclick = 'true' -
Re:Love it
yay! flashblock works under galeon 1.2.5 which happens to be my browser of choice, mainly because it supports sessions.

Re:I like the simple but expandable model
I love firefox, but the thing I find most annoying are the options. The default options is laughable in it's lack of customizablility. The Things they left out does somewhat better, but also covers some wacky settings I couldn't give 2 cents about. about:config is like my dad's garage. Sure it has everything you need to build a car/house/small government
... but try and find a screwdriver in that mess.
I complain because I wish there was better tab management. As a windows developer who uses gvim I tend to have dozens of windows open at any one time, so having one browser with multiple tabs is a godsend. What I really need, however, is to have all external links (email, trillian, url files) open in a new TAB. Not a freaking window, and not over the current tab I have open. I used Tabbrwoser Extensions for a while and loved the functionality of it. I eventually tracked a nasty bug back to it however. Once or twice a day my CPU would kick into overdrive, 99% used up by firefox. I would have to kill it to get control back and would subsequently loose all my various web pages. As a web developer I found this extremely frustrating. Alas I'm forced to disable my favorite extension and I've been unable to find another one that works properly or a property in about:config that does what I need .... [/rant] *gasp* I need a breath -

Firefox does have a google tool bar
-
Re:Google Bar
Well, yes. Firefox in it's default form is ugly. Just like IE. But why don't you look at the themes?
In the end, one of the reasons I switched was because I could make it look better. Phoenity Modern is my theme of choice, it fits into the default stylings of both Windows XP and my chosen Fluxbox theme, and it really does look better than the default IE interface, IMHO. -

You're still using Spacemonkey? I'm runing Mozilla Uberphoenix.
On a serious note, the Web Developer pluging can't be beat. It allows you to do many useful things, such as turning off CSS at a site that doesn't use it properly, plus a whole list of other useful tools for web developers. -

Use FlashBlock in Firefox to only play the Flash that you want.
-
Re:Skip flash
You might be interested in checking out the FlashBlock extension for Mozilla's Firefox browser. Instead of playing the Flash file, it puts a flash logo there. If you want to view the Flash file, click on the logo. Now you've got the best of both worlds, and it looks much nicer than "Missing plugin..."

Linux helps those who help themselves.Grandparent post names this webpage: http://texturizer.net/firefox/tips.html#beh_blank
On that page, there are about 50 links to the description of user.js
To make a long story short, the user.js file is not created by default. To create it, made a new file in your mozilla profile folder. On most systems the file would have a path as
/home/<userName>/.mozilla/<profileName>/<randomTex t>.slt/user.js
Cheers. -
Re:Great Idea!
There is a lot of 'bloat' available for FireFox right Here
The thing is, it's not required bloat, rather optional bloat. -
Re:Just run Spybot
Firefox has another great advantage that I see frequently overlooked: AdBlock
That little extension has made my web browsing pure joy. It blocks every ad I've come across, including flash ads, and it supports wildcards so I can right-click and block entire "ad" directories from servers without losing other content. It's beautiful. -

Re:why
Using Firefox:
Tools>Options
Web Features
Uncheck Java\Javascript right there. No more Java or Javascript ads.
For flash, install flashblock. It simply changes the browser so that you must click on a button before it will show the flash movie. -
Speaking of Moz Devs
Adblock is a extension for Mozilla/Firefox that can block images, javascript, and even flash, among others. Works great.
-
Re:Is this really a problem?AdBlock is the best. You just enter a regex such as *.ads.* and any content from a site in that form will be blocked. I don't see how this company thinks they will work around this. For example, say that they start to overlay an image with some ad, you just block the server where that image is coming from and your done.
Another simple trick is that many ads are common sizes, so with Mozilla and Firefox, you can do this to block images of certain sizes.
