I like Maddox's reason...
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=f
a q "I've chosen a black background for most of my text because it's easier on the eyes than staring at a white screen. Think about it: your monitor is not a piece of paper, no matter how hard you try to make it one. Staring at a white background while you read is like staring at a light bulb (don't believe me? Try turning off the lights next time you use a word processor). Would you stare at a light bulb for hours at a time? Not if you want to keep your vision." -
Re:Featuritis
Let's play with European phones now, Nokia E61i:
E61 - iPhone
Expandable memory - No
Phone Numbers from Webpages - Yes
Full alphabetical keyboard - On-screen
Choice of Opera or Apple browser - Safari
Support for standard, instant E-Mail notification - No
Search and dial from Google Maps - Sure.
3rd party J2ME, native programs - No.
Macromedia Flash - So I hear.
RIM Blackberry - No.
GPS tools - Not that I know of?
I don't even understand what this one means: On-Screen Conferencing options - Play on-hold games with the phone
I couldn't stand the Japanese phone market, even more than the American one. The E61 (and E61i) is a great tool. The dedicated standard keyboard makes both remote administration (ssh) and chat (Jabber, IRC, e-mail) easy. It's no more cumbersome than Apple's iPhone (slightly wider?), and is infinitely more extensible. The lack of IDLE support on the iPhone alone ruled it out for me.
While I can appreciate "Visual Voicemail" as an improvement over the standard mobile offering, I can't imagine that it makes-up for the phones other deficiencies. My voicemail system as it is sends me e-mail with the voice mail as an attachment (with Caller ID info, date, all that jazz), which (because of the IDLE support) instantly notifies me of the new voice mail, and lets me decide if I want to listen to it (download and play the attachment, or dial the voicemail number).
On the other hand, Apple has the mainstream hype. -
Re:An Explanation
some actual facts on the iphone.
* has no instant messaging
* no mms picture messaging
* can't customize your ring tones
* can't record voice
* has no voice dialing features
* can't record video
* $80 US service fee for a dead battery (this is exclusive to apple)
There are tons of phones that are light years ahead of this and cost much less.
Just take a look at the nokia website. All major phone manufacturers have lines of smart phones with specs that surpass the iphone by far. Some even have upto 3.2 megpixel cameras and GASP! actaully let you deveolpe software for them.

Stereo bluetooth
Maybe someone will write drivers so the iPhone can do wireless stereo bluetooth like my Treo.

Maybe someone will write drivers so you could use a bluetooth or IR keyboard.
Maybe someone will write drivers so the iPhone can add some storage, like an SD card. May require soldering.

fat fingers work with buttons
I personally like tactile feedback. Maybe I have fat fingers, but the iPhone just did not work for me.
Right click can be useful too. Maybe even center and scroll. Call me nutty, but form follows function.

Alternate KeypadFunny Jobs hates buttons. Because you know what I hate? Alternate Keypads.
From the Best Site in the Universe:
On an iPhone, you have to press an additional button that opens up an alternate keypad that will allow you to type numbers and punctuation. So typing something as simple as elipses (...) requires you to tap your finger 9 times. Enjoy your phone, losers! People like me who have shit to do will stick to a keyboard that doesn't have its lips wrapped firmly to the user-interface equivalent of a throbbing dong -

Quick Etymology
For those of you wondering, the word "blog" is literally shorthand for "boring."
If tech sites are sucking, they're doing it on their own. -
Re:Isn't that at obvious?
There are a lot of things you can cite as examples of litigious shitholes. Some recent ones from Fark include that cunt who sued a drycleaner for $57 Million over their losing a pair of pants and the dipshit parents who sued so their children who failed school could still walk on graduation day. Then there's the bullshit we saw over the other Hot Coffee incident. But the McDonalds hot coffee case is not bull:
The coffee was not just hot, it was stored 10*c short of boiling. This is mainly because their coffee loses it's taste when stored at a more sane temperature. When it was spilled, the woman received second and third degree burns on her legs and needed skin grafts to heal. She originally sued McDonalds to have them cover her $20,000 of medical bills. Evidently their lawyers were unrepentant pricks (as those representing large corporations tend to be) and pissed off the jury, so the jury instead awarded her millions. Then everyone saw "Jury awards millions.." and went to get out their "Leap to Conclusions" mat. -

Fanboys do marketing huh...
Combine their need to do marketing on behalf of their adopted companies and their products with the passion to make others see things their way, and you have a powerful group of people.
Right, here's the kind of reactions the marketing of a group of unstoppable fanboys achieve.
I too am someone who witnessed the sad transformation of a Windows/Linux guy into a Mac fanboy. Now every little problem I have on my computer, be it slow connection, or program hang, or WHATEVER, serves as a reason that I should be constantly reminded "how much I need a Mac".
"Man, you SO need a Mac!"
"Shit, dude, you gotta get a Mac."
"Macs are sooo cool, let's find you a Mac."
Everything on a Mac is godly and I apparently and struggling to survive without that on my Windows system. Even shadows! How the heck can I work without shadows behind my windows?! Impossible.
I'm suspecting that when you sum up the total of positive and negative effects of rabid fanboys defending their limited view on the world, the picture isn't nice. I'm sure there are people who will despise Mac and Linux without ever seen them, just because of the overly zealous fanboys that nagged them incessantly. -

Re:Patch Tuesday...
In reverse order:
I'm not bitching about releasing the patch itself. My post that all the vulns weren't fixed was in response to the post about "1-day service" and "Apple > Microsoft". He later brought Patch Tuesday into this, and I felt compelled to respond.
I AM bitching about the text on the Safari home page. When you make such claims as "THE WORLD'S BEST BROWSER" you'd better follow them up. (Ah sorry, it was "BEST", not "MOST SECURE".)
This text on the page just a symptom of the absolute arrogance shown by Apple, including in their PC/Mac ads. I am totally fed up of the FUD and outright lies spread by Apple, including in those ads. Yes, I am putting them down. http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=ma cs_cant
Maynor wasn't the only one who found flaws. (He did act like a prick in the past, though.)
It means that the patch made headlines. A poster in this discussion quite appropriately called it "media control".
8+ vulnerabilities in 24 hours IS large. Some of those vulnerabilities even work on the Mac version. (not sure if they are fixed or not)
Why, no, you don't make claims like "the world's best browser" for a highly unstable beta product. -

I like maddox's take on this.
Maddox has something to say about illegal aliens. Specifically:
Get some balls people. If you're too chicken shit and you can't cut it, then maybe it's you who doesn't deserve to live in America.
I think I agree. There'd be fewer illegal aliens if the US would just let the people work here legally. It's not really so bad that they're stealing someone's shitty wal-mart job away from them, and at some point, they'll quickly see that $6 an hour goes nowhere and want more money anyways. Unlike people born here, they don't suck the life out of the country for 18 years while they get "edumacated" for free. They come here with hands ready to work right now.
Think of this: All those factory jobs the US lost to Mexico, China, etc might have stayed if you let more immigrants in. If those factories stayed you'd have a lot more people in the US with better jobs, because you can't have unskilled labour throughout the factory, quite a few skilled trades people, managers, marketers, salesmen, etc have to exist there as well. Those are good, solid, well paying jobs you let another country steal from you in the name of slowing the tide of immigration.
Nuts, I say, absolutely nuts.
Thank God I live in Canada where almost everyone is an immigrant. Immigrants are what made Canada the great country it is. And we have a lot more services for these people to "leech" from than the US, including such modern wonders as free health care and real, honest to god, welfare. -
This reminds me...of an article written about the original xbox http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=x
b ox_suckitLets see if his complaints about the X-Box apply to the Xbox360:
1. Piss-poor design. - Yep, just think "red ring of death"
2. The games suck. - Yep, there are already better games for the Wii, which has been out a shorter period of time.
3. The controller is almost as big as my nuts. - No, they did fix the controller, but it still sucks in comparison with the wiimote.
4. People who own the Xbox don't play video games.The average Xbox owner attends Microsoft SQL Server release parties, reads books on database theory and hates games like Super Mario because they're too old for "kiddie" games since everyone knows that it's graphics, not game play that makes a great game. I mean, why play a game that's actually fun when you can waste hours watching rendered, uninteractive intros instead? Ask the typical Xbox owner what other video games or consoles he likes and you'll draw a blank stare. The reason they bought an Xbox was because it's by Microsoft and they're blindly devoted to the company, not because of the games.
Yep....
5. No Soul. - Obviously, this is Microsoft, they never had a soul, nor will they ever. That's just how evil operates.
6. Shitty philosophy. - Diddo. Again, this is Microsoft we're talking about here...
7. Too expensive. - Yep, Although its cheaper than the PS3, it still costs to much.Maybe Microsoft should consider its own flaws before point out those of others. How does the saying go?
Before worrying about the splinter in another's eye, you should deal with the plank in your own.

Bob (Kumar) from HP (Bombay Telecall) doesn't care
Despite the warm smiling photos, has *anyone* here had a positive experience with customer service in any corporation, big or small, lately? http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=s
t ock_photos
What too many corporate cubicle drones forget is that if the customer isn't happy, the company loses. In theory executives are supposed to craft a 'mission statement' that reminds employees of this. Trouble is the employees are all temporaries, on contracts or outsourced (how sweet is that? Insult someone else's customers and not even have to use your or your companies real name!)
Instead, too many executives treat their customers with contempt too (Hello Vista, Hello DRM). Listen to Bill Gates speak. Has he said anything in the last 15 years that sounded genuine or empathic or like he really cared at all about Microsoft's millions of customers. We're in the situation where companies can treat their customers like crap, but we still keep buying from them, reasoning they're all the same and it's too hard to change. (me too :-(
Kudos to Apple and Jobs. It's smart business and it's not asking much, but they've realized what the likes of Microsoft, HP and eBay couldn't. Doesn't take much to stand out in the crowd these days. Good for them! -

Re:Dramatic improvements?If my points still aren't clear: Windows sucks, OS X and Linux rules. Also vi over emacs, but TextMate is the best, and etc is pronounced etcee. hehe.

Ok. I've got some for you.
* FreeBSD > Linux
* OSX is the result of Apple realizing that they couldn't write a decent OS themselves.
* Apple users need to shut the **** up.
* Using Emacs to edit a text file is like using a front end loader to put out the cat. (not my quote)
Seriously though, the serious problems with Windows that you point out are simply the cost of backward compatibility. It would interesting to see what would have happened if Microsoft had cut off, or severely crippled backward compatibility with the win9x series like Apple did with OS9. -
