Re:no no no
Until we know absolutely everything, we might as well do absolutely nothing. Just because all of our lab experiments lead to the conclusion that carbon dioxide makes warming worse, and we pump huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the environment, we should still do nothing. Humans changing our habits wouldn't fix all the problems, everywhere, forever, so we should still do nothing.
I know this gets brought up all the time, but it's an important point. Just a decade or so ago, we were supposed to act now and change our habits in order to forestall global cooling. This odd hysteria and compulsion to act now and change our habits seems to be mostly political, not scientific. Carbon-trading isn't going to stave off global warming. Assuming it is actually implemented in an enforceable way, it will simply open a new avenue for corruption. Of course, nothing is quite so patently condescending as a rich shitpoke trading carbon credits with poverty-stricken fuckers in some hellhole, so it will probably become huge, condescension being a very popular hobby.

Stupid nationalism
Seriously, people... Who cares what country they come from? Space exploration is ultimately the achievement of the people who are involved with it, not most Slashdotters, politicians, or others who just happen to be from the same arbitrary zone of political union.
If the only things you can be proud of are things that you in no way actually caused, then you need to re-evaluate your self-worth.

Re:A few points
These points are gold. I am not actually sure why I am still even hearing about the Segway. To me personally, it looks inconvienient and a bit of a pain in the ass. My bike/public transit/feet combo works much better for a lot less. In fact I would prefer one of those scooters with a motor over the segway and they are considerably cheaper, and by saying I would prefer I still mean that I wouldn't actually want one. Even if the thing was less than a hundred bucks, I still think it would gather dust in my apartment.
Besides, for all their engineering triumphs, this sums up a better design that would have lower costs http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=se gway_more_complicated_than_it_needs_to_be -

Roommates
My roommates are vegetarians. As soon as they catch wind of this they'll be up in arms about cloning being unethical as well, bah. I eat meat in front of them just out of spite. We've been omnivores since the beginning of time, what's the big deal? I don't see predators in the wild choosing a lovely head of lettuce over a lovely head of human.

Re:My views on Idaho Falls and Alabama in general
Have you ever read Maddox's Idaho Rant?
Incidentally, I've seen single cigs for sale at little dollar tiendas and liquor stores here in Los Angeles. I live in a pretty ethnic neighborhood, though. Mostly Latino.
Don't get me wrong about needing a huge city. If a town has enough of a cosmopolitan or cultural atmosphere, perhaps if it has one or more decent universities, I'm cool. There's a town in Mexico I really like: Guanajuato. It's got a population of around 78,000. It's also the site of a famous (famous in the Latin world) University and is the state capital. It's an old silver mining town, founded in 1554. Here's the Wikipedia article on it where I just grabbed those facts, if you care to learn anymore.
The reason I'm especially interested in Guanajuato is because a movie studio is being built in nearby San Miguel de Allende, and I happen to work in the movie business. I say, "is being built", I should say "is being planned". The land has been purchased, investors brought onboard (including Antonio Banderas, who is sort of the figurehead of this project), but I haven't heard anything further in a while. I was there for almost two months a couple of years ago and I loved it.
I'm also thinking about Mexico City (more commonly known as D.F. or "Day Effay"). Talk about a big city! It's bigger than New York! I've been offered work there by a guy that can get me into one of the Mexican set technicians' unions. I'm not sure if that's the way I want to go (been there, done that already). -
Re:Ethics
Ethics? Who needs ethics?
I know the above link is OT and disturbing (even by my standards), but if the parts of an animal or a human can benefit the rest of the world, then why not use them? It's like nature (or God, if you prefer) handing us a cherished gift and throwing it in the dumpster because we think it disgraces us morally/ethically. What a load of crap. It's just a blob of molecules arranged in a certain way. Get over it. -

Faces say a lot.A reliable source has also noted that it's easy for anyone to spot a pedophile. The abstract outlines its scienticfic validity:
Ever see a guy at work or school who sends off creepy vibes, and you say to yourself "man, I know that guy rapes children"? Some mental health doctors claim that there's no way to tell a pedophile apart from anyone else just by looks alone. Wrong. I scoured the FBI's most wanted list and found some examples that confirmed my theory.

Re:Unfortunately
Why is this modded troll? He's making a perfectly valid point that PETA and Greenpeace, are actually doing more damage than they prevent by extreme Green-ism.
I, for one, agree with him. I've never seen PETA support their claims with studies, or any other form of admissable scientific data. I've not seen one shred of evidence from them that their movement would help save animals. Maddox, even though what he writes is usually flamebait, presents data, from an authority. Who's laughing now, PETA?
http://maddox.xmission.com/hatemail.cgi
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=g
r illAnd what about Greenpeace? What do they have to gain by opposing all forms of unclean power? What about the damage done to the ecosystem by hydroelectric power, as the new resevoirs drastically change local climates? How is that any better than storing a little bit of radioactive material underground, in sealed casques? If these casques are properly designed, how much of that radioactivity will ever leak out? None. Compare this to the ecological damage caused by hydroelectric power.
I would move that Greenpeace should be modded Troll.
It's okay to promote environmental ethics, but protesting nuclear power because of two accidents out of several-hundred plants is like being afraid of plane travel because a few planes out of several-thousand have crashed; Especially with what we know about engineering for safe, economical nuclear power. A lot of lives could be saved--lives that are lost due to pollution-related ilnesses--if we would only lose our fear of nuclear power. Thank you Greenpeace for undermining the one form of power that has the potential, in tandem with other technologies, to enable clean, economical transportation for our children and their children.
I would like my children to know what a tree looks like, not what it looked like.

Re:Saudi Arabia
You're right, I agree. Also, you are describing the exact immigration problem over here. The problem is building up now with the Europian Union and the Euro. I know this will probably discredit me alot, but I actually agree with maddox on this one. Sure, he's taking it to the extremes and talking more about racism, but the truth is that illegal immigration persists because there is a 'market' for it. Companies are trying to cut costs where possible and the government is playing blind in favor of corporations. So a citizen is reduced to a person with a bigger cost overhead than an immigrant. OTOH if they were to be given equal rights with citizens, the corporations would only hire them if they were actually better than citizens. If they came over here only to not be employed in the first place, they wouldn't stay. (Sure, making them citizens would raise the unemployment rate overnight, which is probably why they officially hesitate to make such a move. As you say, the problem isn't a simple one to solve.).
I'm not enamoured with my own, let alone most other governments. The difference being at least I have some say here. Not much, since most voters are lemmings. Corporations can be much much worse.
You're right. And that's the problem I only wish I had a fair answer for. -
I think Maddox puts it best:
From the Best Page in the Universe, about halfway down:
"2. Protest. I'm keeping my web site shitty as a protest against all the slick-looking, contentless web sites out there. Nobody cares about your stupid rotating icons and fading links. Mine isn't the only site on the internet that uses a simple layout, perhaps you've heard of this one?
_Picture of Google here_
Some webmasters have spent years tweaking their layout and designing their site, and very few get any traffic. This site, as shitty as it looks, gets over 1 million visits per month. I use large fonts also as a protest against all the stylish garbage you see out there. When I go to a web site, I WANT TO READ THE CONTENT. Trust me, that micro-font everyone uses isn't nearly as original as they think. ..."

in short the article was written by fps doug
here are some cliffs for those who don't want to read it all.
1. the author plays alot of street fighter and probably alot of fps games
2. the author is angry that his mad mousing skills can't help him in a rpg
3. the author doesn't understand how rpg's work
4. the author wants a rpg that is really a fps
5. the author apparently wants the ability to pull out a noob cannon and scream "boom headshot"
6. the author hasn't listened to all those l2p tells
7. the author doesn't play well with others
further more, and to steal a quote from maddox, if you're too much of an impressionable idiot to play World of Warcraft, don't. WoW isn't teaching any lessons, it's a game and it has certain rules that the player agrees to play by. -

If you're going to get in trouble for playing games at work, then don't have it be Solitaire. As Maddox said, Solitaire is a waste of time. It's a mindless boring game.
I mean, at least do something brain-building like Minesweeper -- that way if you're caught you can say that you're improving your analytical skills or something. -

Re:Trek fix??
"Denigration of people"?? Talk about overreacting. I never said people who disagree with me are idiots or something. Do you always whine at everyone who voice out their opinions without beginning every fucking sentence with "In my opinion..."?
To quote Maddox: Any time you say something sucks around someone who disagrees, they try to validate their taste in shitty music/movies/clothing by reminding you that you still only speak for yourself, as if their opinions are in jeopardy of being monopolized by your own. Everyone already knows it's my opinion by virtue of the fact that I said it, no need to restate the obvious you dopey twat.

What's the matter with kids these days
What's the matter with kids these days?!
I spent the majority of my young teenage years screwing off on IRC with no supervision whatsoever. Everyone knows you don't meet IRL until you know who you're dealing with, I mean it's the internet for christ's sake...
I guess kids just don't have enough paranoia these days. Parents, you need to instill more fear in your children.
