Biometrics
Biometrics do seem to be the solution to this problem. The problem in itself is PATHETIC, people who put no password or easy ones deserve to be hacked, or deserve to be fired, or whatever happens. It's not THAT big of a hassle.
Anywho, there are already some biometrics hardware out for people to buy, if no one has seen it yet: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/input/keyboards /5f11/ plus ThinkGeek has an iris recognition camera, and a stand-alone fingerprint authenticator. The only real problem is that they're all $100+, and I'm not quite sure if all of those people are willing to pay that much money to rid themselves of a problem that can be so easily fixed for free.
I can't say I'd mind biometrics getting cheaper and then doing that, though... heh. -

LED flashlight
am I the only one who has gotten a LOT of ads for the LED Flashlight at the top of
/. since this article first posted? -
Can anybody say prior art?
One situation to watch: Apple Computer recently filed a patent application for a computer whose exterior would change colors, apparently after Color Kinetics had demonstrated their technology to Apple. "It covers a lot of our technology and a lot of patents we hold," Mueller says.
Check out thinkgeek's Ambient Orb. -
Re:The question is...
Earl grey tea may not be sold there, explicitly, but they've got an odd tendency to take photographs of it inside of things that they are selling. Sort of like the Sears catalog and nipples.
-
The question is...
what the hell passes as "News for nerds"? I know earl grey is caffeinated, but if its not sold hereit won't keep ya awake.

Re:My Favorite Screenshot....
It looks to me like its more of a usb storage device, like those 128mb keychains you can get.

My ideal computer desk
If all goes well, I'll have my ideal desk shortly, and for free, too!
It's a 1950's era Steelcase desk. Weighs a ton and has a desk surface area approximately that of a small aircraft carrier.
What makes it idea is that it has a swingaway typewriter platform on the left side. Pull out and push down and the scanner will disappear inside the desk, behind a door. That's where the scanner will live and if there's enough clearance when the scanner is stowed, the 10 GB external SCSI drive will be stashed there as well.
On the desktop, there will be more than enough room for the PowerMac 5400/200, modem, speakers, mouse, telephone, LaserWriter, Palm cradle, Hello Kitty USB hub, CD rack, plastic file folder holders, red stapler, mug full of pens, coaster for the can of Red Bull, slide rule, calculators, diverse reference books and manuals, diverse desk tools, Initech mouse pad, et al, etc.
Now, to find a used Aeron chair for sale in the Boston area for US$150 or so.
-
Doesn't even come with a chair!
I'd rather get the Datasurfer PC Workstation
-
wow
If it was produced, he expects it would have a price tag of about 400 to 500 ($600 to $800)
That's probably the price for futuristic furniture today, but i doubt if it's really worth it for geeks today when you can get much more stuff for that money that actually serves a purpose in geekterms from Think Geek. Admit it, who needs sharp desktopdesign when your basic needs are pizza, smokes, and coke. -

We'll have to wait for a dupe until ThinkGeek starts selling it..
-
My only question is...
And electrons trapped in the middle layer were excited by light to create a quantum logical gate with four states. "
Does this mean I won't be able to use my LED Light Sticks?
Similarly, do i get extra mod points for linking to Thinkgeek?

Re:Pricing...and cost
There is a considerable amount of up-front costs for developing, testing and packaging a game. Nearly all of the developer's costs occur before the release of the game and a good portion of the publisher's expenses as well. With that in mind, both need a large infusion of cash to cover the costs of the release and to pour funds back into other projects.
It is also interesting that retailers like Best Buy and Walmart don't seem to be using games as lost leaders in the same way that they do for music and movies. My guess is that MAP agreements and hefty amounts of co-op keep the retailers at the initial price. -
It is finally working...

Re:/. parrotting Micro$oft product announcements?
How long before I get a trackball embedded in my mouse?
I'm surprised it wasn't done years ago.
You mean kind of like this one?
That's the first thing I thought of when I saw this article. Personally, I don't see many people using horizontal scrolling that much. Graphics and spreadsheets might be good uses, but other than that, it would probably be yet another feature that half the planet doesn't even know how to use, like keyboard shortcut keys. -
IOGear mouse at ThinkGeek.com does thisThey've had it for a while at thinkgeek I bought it and it works ok. The horizontal scrolling tends to not work as well as it should though. For instance, when scrolling through my mp3 folder if I scroll up and down MS interprets it as side to side scrolling which works fine (view set as list) but if I scroll horizontal it scrolls 5-6 lines at a time even though it's set at 2 in the IOGear s/w. Works great in Opera though.
-
Thinkgeek's got one
This is nothing new, there's one at ThinkGeek for $17.99 from IOGear. I have it and it works fairly well, except for the fact that no Linux application recognizes horizontal scrollage. Fortunately, I still get use out of the trackball, since the mouse can switch in hardware to 'trackball' mode, where the trackball and the mouse proper switch roles. Moving the mouse up and down to scroll is a lot easier than twiddling a roller or a ball.
-
I saw this on thinkgeek just today.
I was browsing thinkgeek and ran across this mouse. Sounds like this is old news.

Re:The obvious answer...
Won't fit in 32Meg, but I found one that runs around 100Meg called runt. I put it on my Laks watch and was able to boot from it on a computer that supported USB booting. With a boot floppy, I was able to boot other systems that did not support USB booting.

Re:Wallpaper of the Penguin smashing the SCO LogoWe need some logo and/or wallpaper that we can use to express our displeasure with SCO.
Nothing says fsck you to SCO better than this.

Re:woohooWell, only if your hitting on Elvish women!
Otherwise you might as well just wear an "I'm a big geek" T-shirt. Like, say, this one.

Some Interesting New Products...This is fantastic stuff! Pretty soon we'll see places like ThinkGeek selling stuff to boost your glucose levels. I can see the reviews from OverclockedCafe 50 years from now -- "HowTo: Speed up your pacemaker with Glucose!" Plus, with the embedded chips coming our way, we'll probably be tapping our circulatory systems to power in-built PDAs or to watch movies in the palms of our hands on a flexible OLED screen.

fp btw.
