Re:I wonderSounds great for a jailhouse lawyer but remember the distinguishing feature of jailhouse lawyers is that they're in jail. If you try that in an actual court you'll be laughed out of the room. You'll also find that using any device to cause a cash-register to undercharge an item is, in itself, a crime in many states (Illinois being one of them). The crime is theft, incidentally ("A person commits the offense of retail theft when he or she knowingly:
... Alters, transfers, or removes any label, price tag, marking, indicia of value or any other markings which aid in determining value affixed to any merchandise displayed, held, stored or offered for sale, in a retail mercantile establishment and attempts to purchase such merchandise personally or in consort with another at less than the full retail value with the intention of depriving the merchant of the full retail value of such merchandise; ..." -- See the details here, sec 16A-3.b).#insert

NYTimes' take...Here's a New York Times article from yesterday. Fun quote:
In Mr. Stallman's view, proprietary software is an unwarranted restriction on the freedom of information. The revision of the G.P.L., he said, is "part of something bigger - part of the long-term effort to liberate cyberspace." Software patents, he said, are "utterly insane."
For Microsoft's part, Steven A. Ballmer, its chief executive, has called the G.P.L. a "cancer."
Yet in his way, Mr. Stallman is also quite pragmatic. Proprietary software applications can run on Linux without restrictions, which is important for the survival of Linux as a viable alternative to commercial operating systems. -
Basic findings from a user standpoint
I have spent quite a bit of time on Glide Effortless, and have released a review on the day of its release 48 hours ago. I have received a 1.5 hrs live demo from them and have audio interviewed Donald Leka CEO of the company. As I have extensively written in my own article at http://tinyurl.com/e3g2z, this is really just an overly ambitious project, with, in my opinion, little solid foundation in terms of true seamless integration, true benefits for the final user, and more than anything with a failed understanding of how an online product must be marketed and sold today. Yes, I do acknowledge that their buzz campaign has been phenomenal, to the point that my trust and respect for both the New York Times and Slashdot, which has covered twice this story, has fastly decreased. With all the real good work out there, I really wonder what kind of friends and contacts this Transmedia corporation has to get all of this coverage for a tool that if you had to use today, would fall short on most any front.

Re:I also live in Hurricane country.
(Regardless of party) I remember seeing a mayor of one town|city who was notified his house was a pancake. He got a ride there, looked at it, then went back to work. He said his personal interests were secondary to the job he'd been hired to perform and he'd return to deal with his house & possessions when everyone else was taken care of.
I really don't care which party chooses to assign those qualities to their members, having someone like that taking care of their constituents is enough to make everyone wait in line to vote for hours if there's a single voting machine just to make sure they remain in office.
Aside from a few exceptions and having connections with people who have been elevated to the federal level, most party affiliations have little to do with one's abilities and outlook, let alone what kind of job they do until they get to at least the state level (Governor or State Legislature, regardless of which House).
What I do have concerns about is paying for people who live in Hurricane Alley and want someone [else] to pay to rebuild, pay to rebuild, pay to rebuild, pay to rebuild, pay to rebuild...pivot! pivot! pivot! (Friends) the news keeps referring to insurance companies or the Federal Gov't. Either way, it's everyone else paying. Individuals pay the insurance premiums which are used to cover other people and the Federal Gov't is funded by individuals paying taxes. I live in an area which is a reasonably large magnet for tornadoes. If my house is flattened more than once, I think I'm going to get the hint it's time to reexamine my living situation. The attitude of, "This is where I want to live and if it's interrupted for any reason, someone's going to pay to restore it so I'm happy." is a bit more than I can stomach and I don't know that the family-sized bottle of Pepto is going to alleviate that. I also live in an area where prior to purchasing a house, you are required to check to see if you live in a flood plane and you're made aware of where you stand financially (insurance-wise) as a result. I've got news for the people of the South: you live in a flood plane. If your insurance premiums were made to properly reflect this, kwitcherbitchin'. It's the price you pay for living in a warm place year 'round. I live in a place which has four seasons each year. And there's a price to be paid for that and I pay it.
Last night, the NBC National News said some of the larger insurance companies are dropping people who live in areas affected by certain types of weather - I believe they were referring to locations where make sure you've got hip waders handy four or five times each year. The only problem with that is the gov't is then expected to bail them out. Either way, someone else pays for their lifestyle.
As far as the poor who are suffering, a lot of people have been presented with opportunities to live in other locations with a decent period (multiple months) of rent or mortgage amnesty to permit them to set their lives up with the donations of goods and permit them to find a job.
This may be apocryphal, but it's been said one guy was shown a trailer for temporary housing and when he asked where the tv was, he was told there wasn't one, so he refused the housing. That sounds a little too fishy to be true, but if it is [true], then someone (him) needs to wait in line for an attitude adjustment with a 2x4.

We always choose Door #2: Wrong Engine!Fuel-In > Poop-Out Engines need to go! A real engine runs in circles

To make an efficient engine a certain amount of dieseling is healthy.
Instead of controlling an engine, purposely design it to Run Out of Control then figure ways to hold it back. Also, if transmissions/clutches or drive shafts was designed to slip when going downhill we wouldn't be in this mess now. A car or truck's weight should be doing Work from being acted on by gravity. As it is, the engine is being used to hold the vehicle back instead of
IDLING-DOWN WHILE DRIFTING DOWNHILL!
Even a hybrid would get better mileage with a drifting-&-brake regeneration system. My 2003 steam-air engine LN2000 combination solution accomplishes sonufusion (defined by Dr. Taleyarkhan of Purdue University in 2002). Links to his News announcements are on the enginewow page. Read what he said then compare it to what I did without his help. He said a desktop-sized power source was probable. Well, I made two engines to work like that. He called it a type of fusion. My engines don't combust any fuel so no by-product pollution, not even water. The reason no pollution is because there isn't any wasted energy! The United States shells out $17,000,000,000,000.00 annually medicating, doctoring, hospitalizing, triaging & surgerying people poisoned to death by our own engines

Tell me we can't afford industrial retooling. Tell me 48,000,000 Americans can't have plenty health/dental care @reasonable cost. Changing the engines makes Americans healthier, naturally reducing the Cost of Medical & Hospital Care. We send $55,000,000,000.00 out of American's pockets each year to purchase crude oil (another $1,100,000,000,000.00). Why, wouldn't that mean a lowcost home for every American family? I cry BS on this supposed CSR process
I've played city of heroes for about 6 - 7 months now, gotten a character to level 43 of 50, another to 18 and a few more low level alternate characters.
From the time I joined, in each and every issue they have been reducing the power of the Heroes. Issue 5 was perhaps the largest single reduction in power in a game beside SWG. Defense for heroes were reduced by as much as 60% in some cases.Issue 5 altered the playstyle of the entire game, and we as players were told that
1) It was better for us
2) It was how the game was always meant to be played by the development team
3) There would be no more power changes after Issue 5, they were happy with the way things were.
Then came Issue 6.
Previously you could slot 6 enhancements in a power, and boost your power by near 200%. So you could get say 200% more damage, enabling you to tackle higher level opponents in the case of stronger character classes,or enable you to survive in a group facing +2 level opponents in the case of weaker character classes. The system was altered in Issue 6 so that you could not use more than 3 enhancements of the same type in a power. So the boost was cut from 200% to 95%. Understand, this affected EVERY single power in the game. If your 6 slotted heal was healing for 3000 before, your 3 slotted heal now heals for 1950 now. THe monsters have stayed the same, or in some cases made more difficult.
Now recall the points above, the final statement issued by develoers/CSR was that There would be no more power changes After Issue 5. Issue 6 introduced this "Enhancement Diversification" which had the final result of reducing all powers, again.
The words from the developers were that they had this working since May 2005, and were just waiting on the right time to introduce it, that Issue 5 had been totally balanced with this change in mind.
And this was the way the game was meant to be played.
Questions by an incredulous player population as to why it took over a year and a half after its release for the game to be changed to 'how it was meant to be played' have not been answered by the CSRs.Of course it also means that those game journalists that gave the game stunning reviews were actually not playing the game 'The way it was meant to be played'.
There was an outcry over Issue 5 (Though most were able to adapt and enjoy it) and now Issue 6. There have been long threads on the official message forums, some of which have never gotten a developer response. You would expect, if you believe the spin from this interview with the NCSoft CSR, that we the paying customers would get a response, even if someone responds with a Negative, "We hear what you're saying, but we are not going to change anything at this time because..." for threads that have been running for months with over 6000 views and hundreds of responses, and several PMs to the message board CSR,especially since the subscriber base and board population of CoH is nothing close to the larger MMORPGs. Less people to deal with, should enable quicker responses and a closer community. Each Archetype for CoH has only just gotten a dedicated CSR point of contact, and some are more active than others in responding to player questions and queries.
I'm opinionated and quite vocal (what? you couldn't tell ? ;-) )when I feel passionately about my hobby, and I must say that I really got into CoH (Truly it has no competition in the Superhero Genre) even going so far as to write up an extensive guide for other players (with graphs, a true geek moment ack *_* http://tinyurl.com/bzb7m) .So I participated in a lot of these threads.I was going to post a link to the Issue 5 thread as an example, but I see it has been deleted so here's another example:

Regenerative braking uses no friction. It doesn't matter the weight of the vehicle except for braking distance. Say it with me, "no friction equals no wear". Brake pads only get used at < 8mph (for a Prius), or in emergency braking.
Where do you support that hybrid weighs more than another vehicle in the same class, because a Prius sure weighs less than the similarly sized Camry and Accord.
Load-sharing with a lighter-engine with less mass to accelerate sure sounds like a win-win to me. -

Sonofusion reaction drive + anti-gravity
I think the guy who wrote this page: http://www.newpath4.com/enginewow.htm , which is a car engine that uses a sound wave implosion/explosion (sonofusion where the heated steam molecules implode AND the cold droplets of compressed air explodes -into the implosion vacuum- slamming the pistons) inside a closed engine cylinder, is the most likely candidate for the one who will come forth with anti-gravity. In fact, I believe he has. But, since it looks a lot like perpetual motion, attempting to obtain a Patent would be a waste of money. Which is GREAT since I oops I mean he doesn't have any. http://tinyurl.com/7aaca .

Re:They're really going to hate it when...
That's why the latest encryption software includes hidden encrypted containers INSIDE encrypted containers that cannot be distinguished from random sectors - it simply appears as unallocated drive space inside the container. Because space inside an ecrypted container is never "zero'ed-out", and still contains random characters, there's no way of discovering the container (it's not necessarily contigious sectors/blocks).
When said operative starts working you over, you hold out as long as you can, then give them the password to the encrypted outer container so they can get inside and see some "moderately incriminating" evidence but hopefully nothing they'll kill or imprison you permanently for. But there's no way they can ever prove there is anything else inside the container and justify the effort and expense of continuing to "work you over".
For a great example of such software, look for "rubberhose" (which apparently is a now-defunct project, but can still be found on the internet archive http://tinyurl.com/c2pu4/).
The same goes for countries that can hold citizens in jail (lawfully) until the citizens hand-over the encryption key. With the hidden partition, they can safely give them the key for the outer container and be off-the-hook because the authorities can never prove the existance of an inner container.

20050008087 Tri-state integer cycle modulation
The invention disclosed in this application uses a method of modulation named Tri-State Integer Cycle Modulation (TICM) wherein a carrier signal, comprised of a continuum of sine waves is modulated such that spectrum utilization is minimal. A modulation event is imposed upon the carrier signal by modifying the carrier frequency at precisely the zero crossing point or the zero degree angle. The method of imposing the modulation event is by increasing the frequency of the carrier for one or an integer number of wavelets then lowering the frequency of the carrier for one or the same integer number of wavelets then returning to the carrier frequency to derive the modulation event. The main carrier frequency is only modulated beginning at the zero degree phase angle and ending at the 360-degree phase angle.
