Project E.U.N.U.C.H.
Anyone remember this from back in the day?

Re: Woohoo!
We found intelligence on Earth!
The people at the Search for Terrestrial Intelligence Project will have to confirm this, of course. However it'll be an amazing breakthrough if we finally discover intelligent life on Earth!

Re:Low Frequency
Sadly I lost my ham license while immigrating to a new country. I should really go get it sorted
You can do it online
;-) -
Re:Chance unknown
There's been some extensive research in this field already. Perhaps you could join the STI@home project?

Re:One core, two threads?
So... what's the advantage to having one core running at 7GHz versus four at standard clock speeds, assuming that whatever you're running takes full advantage of all the threads?
To play Quake at ~9x its rated speed, of course.
Why else would you want to do it?

Re:It's been awhile...
It's not too hard to get a ham licence.

TOTL
reminds me of this satire that was created by some university friends of mine in the 90s, it was picked up by the main stream news and they were interviewed, linked constantly. It was, of course, a joke - and eventually bogged down the the constant phone calls and links they were freely saying so on their site and begging for it all to stop...
and of course, they were slashdotted: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=00/05/21/1947222&mode=thread

Re:SITI
wohoo, the search for intraterrestrial intelligence is over =)
It's actually called the search for terrestrial intelligence & it exists: http://totl.net/STI/
Well, sort of...;p -
very old link
These guys did it and it's powered only by potatoes.

Re:How about the intelligent life?
Search for Terrestrial Intelligence is currently in progress but has not produced any good evidence of intelligent life on that planetary object yet.

Toxic coolants
I'm skeptical. Extreme overclocking requires copious amounts of dangerous coolants which are known to cause severe brain damage to the system's user. Side effects include: empty fridge, finding strangers sleeping in your tub and massive hangovers.
-
Re:So they want GOV spyware?
Occasionally, pouring alcohol into a computer really can work. Just how far can you overclock a 486SX/25?

Re:How is this news??
No kidding, you can help the STI* Project by running STI @home. Please donate some of your spare brain processing power (after all you only use 10%) to help us find intelligent life.

Re:A literal "Big Red Button" disasterI work in a datacenter, and while I can appreciate the need for the EPO in emergency situations (fires, etc), I think they should need more then a push (perhaps a turn and a push) to prevent accidental power offs. Several fire alarm triggers I've seen through my career have a two stage process (lift and pull, turn and push, etc) to prevent accidental triggers, and I hope to see this carried over to EPOs someday. You mean like this one? It's their "hacking defense." It takes two pushes for it to trigger, and "delete their website."
:-) totl.net has an innovative solution to this situation. The Honour System. We put trust in YOU and we are confident that in return you will respect us. We have made it so easy to delete our site that no one will bother as it presents no challenge. I know it's only *slightly* related to the discussion, but this is probably as related as this site will ever get. ;-) -
Re:More likely
No, infact there's a project trying to establish just that: the Search for Terrestrial Intelligence(STI). You can even donate part of your brain time to STI@home

Re:Knowing Your NeighboursThis, I think, puts the fact in perspective that SETI@home hasn'tfound any signal yet, even after years of listening. They would onlybe able to detect very powerful transmissions, much more powerful thananything our own civilization could produce. Never mind what SETI are doing, the STI (Search for terrestrial intelligence) project havn't found much here on earth yet!

Re:My Macbook burns
The should have used spirits cooling (and a freezer that goes up to 11...)
(Yes, I know it is an old link. Shame that totl doesn't get updated these days.) -
One of my favorites...
On Temple ov thee Lemur they have this crazy perl script. It's all on a single line and displays a realtime ASCII clock when run. Oh, it apparently also only runs on Linux.

Who cares?
We still have http://cities.totl.net/

Re:why all the dupesBetter hurry up. Slashdig.com and
.net are taken, but .org is available. I have an old pentium pro in storage that you are welcome to. You may want a couple other web servers to help with load balancing. All jackassery asside (and yes, that is a tranvistive verb, so I guess not all, pi) instead of always bitching on
/. about /., put your code where your mouth is and get it done. Even if you are not a coding wizard, there are any number of portals and blogging scripts available, so no excuses. I, myself, recognize the flaws in the /., but still enjoy the /., so I am still here. You are still here too, so you must enjoy the /., or at least have a positive apathy/dupe level. -

Re:What I want to know is...
Not sure, but I do believe they ran the tests on Spud Servers.

I hope he's better at programming then at hardware
For this project, I recommend no less than a 486DX2 133Mhz processor with 64 megs of ram
Because there sure is a lot wrong with asking for a 486 DX2 133MHz. Ain't no such thing exist.
First, saying that the chip is a DX2 implies that the motherboard opperated at a 66MHz bus speed, which no 486 had the blessing to experience (66MHz bus speeds didn't happen until the Pentium line). The 2 in DX2 implied that the CPU operated at a frequency twice that of the bus speed (DX2 66MHz = 33MHz bus speed). There were certainly DX4s though, where the CPU frequency was 3x that of the bus speed (why it wasn't the DX3, I don't know). DX4 75MHz (25 MHz bus) and 100MHz (33MHz bus).
Second, the only chip manufacturer ever to release a 133MHz 486 processor was AMD (a true DX4, 33MHz x 4), and by that time, but the Pentium left all 486s in their dust. There was no market for it, and it was laid out to pasture. I doubt anybody still has one running. Well, perhaps except for these guys. -
Re:LOST????
God, there's a shining example of the law of fives if I ever saw one.
You know, the more and the harder I look, the more I see the truth of the Law of Fives...
:-)Not to mention the 17-23 connection...

Far better way of Cooling
Even though the name is a bit scary: Project Eunuch

And after demonstrating your tech skills, you can have some fun by disposing the cooling liquids! -

Re:Photovoltaics? No, Potatoes!
To hell with Photovoltaics! Too much pollution. Let potatos (izzat spelt OK, Dan?) do the conversion from sunlight.
Then YOU convert the carbos to electricity and run your server(s) using POTATO POWER !
Anything less will pollute.
I assume the spud-power UPS will power something other than a Windows/IIS system... -
Re:Some points for TigerDirect
It occurs to me as I read your post that someone who is confused by TigerDirect and Apple's Tiger is probably wondering why TigerDirect doesn't sell, you know, actual live Tigers... direct.
I haven't seen any places that sell tigers direct to the customer, but I can recommend you to Instant Monkeys Online! They're far less dangerous than tigers.
The Instant monkeys page is part of Temple ov thee lemur, which has a collection of humorous websites they have developed, including such classics as microsith.com and Project E.U.N.U.C.H. -

Project E.U.N.U.C.H.
I can't believe in all of this no one has mentioned (at least above the +2 level) "Project E.U.N.U.C.H.," especially in light of the mention of 386-MHz 386s in the Slashdot article. A bunch of British guys overclocked a 486DX/25 to something like 258 MHz (with lots of extra cooling) before it gave out...
p -
Project E.U.N.U.C.H.
(i.e. Extreme Use of Nearly Universal Cooling Hardware)
The folks at The Temple ov Thee Lemur" took an old 486 SX/25, cooled it down using nothing but a freezer and cold booze, and were able to overclock it to 247 Mhz and play HalfLife for two minutes before it crashed and burned. -
Re:Cooling
So put some alcohol in it. Just remember NOT to run the thing at 10x it's rated FSB while drunk on the coolant, as those poor souls found out the hard way
;-) -
Fantastic!
As proof of this amazing(?) feat of programming, the server still works, at least at this moment in time it's still serving its page, though slowly. Despite the author's hacky implementation (serving content depending on what port the request is sent through) I think we must congratulate him - few servers survive a slashdotting for this long. Anyone remember the spud server? (there was a real one too.)

Re:Pretty impressive productivity increase
You mentioned using beer to cool Linus, but these guys used beer to cool the computers!
By the way, these are the same guys who run

I know I've been struggling... have you found any? Will this help?
