Me, I just play True Combat Elite. Its professional quality, and most important, its totally free.

I recommend TC:E, which you can grab here. It is a mod for Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, so it's free. The graphics aren't as snazzy as CS:Source, but they are as good as, if not better than, the original CS. The gameplay is where TC:E really shines. IMO, it's far more realistic than CS:Source. TC:E lacks the extra physics, such as shooting a barrel and watching it roll around, but it is a FAR more fun game to play.

He should play some objective-based games like True Combat, or maybe CS. I'd like to try and play him in one of those. Im not a huge fan of fragfest games like QuakeIII, or UT. I like slower, more strategic games where you have to wait several minutes when you die. Eliminates spawn camping.

I'm fortunate that the games I like are all running on native Linux - things like Doom3, Unreal Tourney, Enemy Territory (actually, it's ET I play the most, I enjoy the team-based online games). It's doubly fortunate since I don't have Windows.

ET also has a great mod - True Combat Elite - which is a complete mod of the game in the vein of Counterstrike. TCE is a bit more 'serious' than ET is - it's less cartooney and much more strategic (and a good set of headphones is helpful because sound is more important than ever). Give me tactical shooters like Operation Flashpoint, Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six and I'll get rid of Windows on my home computer.

You know it's bad when you start to dream about repairing a tank with a pair of pliers, and you hear your mate on TeamSpeak shout a warning about some Axis soldier creeping up on you with a primed nade.

Then there is Doom. Whenever I see a barrel, I want to shoot it and make it blow up.

Beats the pants off of Urban Terror in the 'realism' department.

I find True Combat very interesting. It's a MOD for Q3A, but the details are astonishing and the realism just rocks. It has classic deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, survivor and team survivor.

The latest build (11) also has iron sighting (alpha) and comes with its own bots.

Ever since I found this I find myself no longer playing the cheater-ridden online CounterStrike...
