It's not that they were trying to bypass a payment (Xcode is free to download). It's that Apple's severs are just so damn slow if you can't get access to their content distribution network. Sadly, this is pretty much the case of everyone in China due to the Great firewall of China that strangles access to non-China networks.

It also used to be true if you used Google DNS because previous primary Apple's CDN, Akamai, used DNS to route traffic. In that case, many developers would rather use BitTorrent to grab Xcode than to disable Google DNS.

The real issue is the fact that these developers disabled Gatekeeper. Gatekeeper would have prevented infection.

The entire reason an Xcode infected with malware even ran is because the developers that fell for it had to explicitly bypass gatekeeper (Mac OS X's built in anti-malware), which otherwise prevents the infected Xcode from launching.

Xcode is signed and Gatekeeper warns about a corrupted binary. The issue is that these developers that were infected intentionally disabled Gatekeeper checks so they could run the infected Xcode.

So were they unwitting participants in the scheme; or was this the Developers' plan all along, and they just got caught?

That's a typical storm system. Notice 3/4 of the country is covered with clouds. It typically takes about a week for a storm system to pass across the country. The next week, it may be sunny or there may be another storm system.

I don't think you get what I'm saying - it's a lot easier to rig a small vote than a large one, purely because you don't need to get as many people on board. Look here's a noted and very vocal SJW Charles Stross crowing about the "victory", although himself and Scalzi fail to realise they're just making the point for the Sad Puppies. When he speaks of "fans" here he's talking about his own clique who did exactly as instructed, as demonstrated above.

I don't agree with anyone receiving death threats and it's dumb that I have to state that whenever Zoe Quinn, Brianna Wu or Anita Sarkeesian come up, but I'm all out of empathy for these women. Who seem to continually kick beehives, get stung by wasps then parade it around as evidence that bees need to be eradicated. Quality of opportunity is exactly what we all want. Try to help more women into IT not by favouring them, but by simply removing barriers to them even applying and letting the best candidate win.

Any evidence that there's actually a problem once women graduate? (Women being dissuaded from technical interests in middle and high school is a real and studied problem, of course.) All the companies I've worked for actually did favor women in the recruiting (but not interview) process. I've done plenty of "new college grad" interview days that the field of candidates that were flown in were 40-50% female, which sure as heck isn't the ratio of grads. We interview everyone the same of course, but every place I've been for the past decade has made a special effort to try to recruit women at the start of the process.
