Re:Isn't this just DRM in little pieces?
The battle isn't in the crack teams' favor these days:
The PS3 has been shown to be 100% secure after the years it has been out.
I believe GeoHot might disagree with you in that regard
HD satellite is still unbroken.
Really? Which satellite network? BEV is cracked, as is N3 (So Dish) - Google "N3XT"
FairPlay for movies still has not been cracked, and no, using the analog hole or a program like SoundTaxi to "record" the played movie is not a crack. That is a transcoding.
I'm sure the QTFairUse guys would have done it, had not Apple C&D'd them into oblivion.
HDCP has been out for a while, still unbroken.
Really? Are you sure about that?
Recent iPhones are still not jailbroken.
Really? Ask PlanetBeing about that.
Windows 7 activation has yet to have a reliable bypass that doesn't turn the desktop black.
Really? 'cause I'm using This release (For educational purposes only, of course), and have no black desktop on either x86 and x64. As long as you don't install KB971033 (Which can be blacklisted in Windows Update), you're just fine.

Re:Not me but...
That would be me.
My PhD supervisor suggested that if I'd asked for a beta on the finger next to it at the same time, I could have asked for a reduction.

Twitter is more than Twitter
Twitter is now an ecosystem. There are so many applications around twitter, its not anymore about pushing some crappy update.
You can have IM chat share pictures or monitor you plants
:)Twitter is now a very large scale social network hub.

Re:That Is a Feature
Almost exactly how...
-
Half way there...
There's lots of arguments for using multiple monitors, for the past 4 years I've had upto 7monitors at one point and have scaled back to 5. It really is all about screen real estate. As a developer, the more monitors I have, the easier it becomes to be productive at multitasking.
Working as an e-commerce developer, this is how I typically manage the monitors.
One monitor dedicated to email.
One monitor shared between Tailing log files and file manager, I find it's easiest to share if both windows have maximized height, but 90% width, and one aligned to the left of the screen the other to the right, so I can easily "select" between the two, at the same time not requiring any additional actions to bring one window forwards.
One monitor dedicated for a browser, usually front and center
One monitor dedicated for the code editor of choice
Finally one monitor to collect misc items, which may include IM client, emails I am composing, music player, perhaps even another browser for compatibility or for coding reference. This monitor is usually on the far end of the setup of monitors.
Here's a shot of my current setup: http://twitpic.com/1uv28l
The stacked monitor is on a different machine than the other 5.

Re:Wait...
Just FYI, Mike Massimino was the first to regularly send public messages via Twitter from the Space Shuttle (on the mission they upgraded Hubble). It was most interesting seeing him adapt to being back on Earth.
Other folks in space have since, including @Astro_Soichi, who regularly posted great pictures from the ISS to his Twitter account.
Here's a list of, wow, now twenty astronauts' Twitter accounts. The @NASA_Astronauts combines all their messages into one account, but most would be earthbound and it would be lots of messages, probably better in an RSS reader or email digest than getting dinged with messages all the time.

Re:I didn't miss them at all .....
Flash runs well on Windows. I'm just going to assume that many of the people here don't use Macs so don't really understand how poorly flash runs on OS X.
This is a typical flash game on facebook (a typical use-case for an iPhone/iPad user if flash was available) . That's 70% of CPU for a single flash instance.
-
Re:Justifying the real reasons
This is one of many, but probably the main reason there's no flash on the iPhone.

Re:couldn't agree more: 1920x1080 sucks
I second this - I've a dual monitor setup and one of them in portrait. It's a real joy to browse in 1920x1200. Wide enough for most sites, and actually high enough that I seldom have to scroll.
Twitpic photo of my setup: http://twitpic.com/1585yt
Anyway, what I want is a Full HD screen in a 15" notebook - there are a few of them, but the choices a few. -
We get it, the legs are long...
Seriously... all fashion concept drawings look like this. I don't understand them either, but, apparently designers and fashion-types do if they can translate that to what it will actually look like.
The thing is, this outfit will probably look great when actually constructed. In any case, it'll look better than if she was just floating around in baggy overalls, and for someone with small proportions it might even be more comfortable.
Also, Japan has some precedent here: check out Soichi Noguchi's spacesuit - it looks very Japanese and sci-fi/anime-esque, and very cool when compared against the standard NASA suits. Also, check out his photos he posts to twitter from ISS here - some really cool stuff (mostly taken with a professional Nikon DSLR).

It's Wine, people.
I just installed the 64-bit deb on my Ubuntu machine and launch it just to see that it's just a Wine application.
It also brings integration into KDE and Gnome
My ass. It's just the Windows version compiled with winelib and on my Ubuntu desktop it is really looking ugly. And I mean more than usual for a wine application. It's all "Windows 2000" greyish.
Look for yourself http://twitpic.com/1b8ds2.
Not free, not native and really ugly. Don't bother with it.

I am on Macs. But I think iPad is crap.
OK, I am Mac fanboy, call me that, if you like. I use iMac at office/job (I required from the company one), I use macs at home everywhere. Sure I have some Linuxes and some OpenSolaris around and zero Windows (at least you can respect me for this).
:-) Now, there was lots of debates for the iPad is an XXXL iPod-Touch with some little iPhone capabilities. Fine, let's summarize for a various market targets all together. This kind of folks browsing an Internet, watching videos on the webs, writing emails and might use some office suites.
- You want to work with docs. You found a great iWork right there. You've done your presentation and such. But you find yourself miserable, once you starting share them with others: iWork has very poor compatibility with MS Office and zero compatibility woth OpenOffice.org suite, which gains popularity. Adding here that using iPad on a desk is an utterly horrible experience due its curvy shape on a back - you've got the picture.
- You want to watch videos. You found a great QuickTime player and it just works. But you find yourself annoyed for the iPad does NOT utilize 16:9 screen and can not play 1080p HD videos. Needless to say, you can not use Hulu or similar services, only YouTube. Well, at least you can watch this.
- You want communicate with your friends. While some kind of Google Talk is fine, you will find you're unable to just place the thing on your lap and simply, laying on the sofa, talk through the videocam to your friends. Because there is none of it. You're unable to call your parents, because there is no Skype available. There is no iChat to collaborate something by sharing desktop or just talk through the video.
- You want to find yourself using GPS. It is just great: you have it available there. But you will also find it is assistive GPS using 3G. That means, if you are on a dead zone for your 3G, then your GPS simply kaput and you will be not able to use it at all.
- You are fine having none of that above and you also OK with 13" black&white TV set at home as well. But you have a simple money management software that greatly runs on your Mac OS X and you use it for years. Now you have to migrate all that stuff? No, you want to keep your Macbook instead.
- You're power user and you can do some development for yourself. iPad is clearly not for you here! Why? Think of it: you need some utilities for your home. You can make some great utilities with average GUI using Java (YMMV) over, let's say two-three evenings (I can do this just easily). Java, because I want the same thing on other platforms and I don't want to fuck my brains with memory allocations in C/C++/Objective C. But even you hate Java just wait, just calm down and wait... So I got NetBeans (YMMV), I use clicky mouse to toss up some shitty GUI there (YMMV), hang some events, toss up it with some database, let's say H2 and I have a little app (about 300K jar) that just does what I need. You can use what ever you like, but I use Java as an example here. OK, fine, you say I can do the same with $foobar? No! Because no such thing. Only Objective C. Can I do it for myself easily? Not at all! Because I need to sign an NDA with Apple and buy their SDK and headbang my head into the wall learning all this crap very hard. Why? Because developers are banned from sharing code samples and knowledge: that's NDA is for.
- You want to share your iPad with your family member. But there is no multi-user concept at all. It is strictly personalized thing.
What we've got here? A device, that is designed for fun, but completely unable to do so.
Definitely, only a black magic can help here to enjoy that poor thing... But Tim Cook must smoke something very strong. I want to smoke that stuff too: must be a good shit...

:Justin Foster, a fellow Canadian infosec guy, brought up an interesting point today in a tweet he sent out:
I remember the good old days when a cloud was something we drew to represent the Internet between two points. *Sigh*He's also responsible for the following diagram for those of you who are visual people:
http://twitpic.com/flhfo"Cloud" is one of those marketing terms that I can't stand because it is now applied to absolutely everything out on the Internet AND in data centers. In my day we called those areas DMZ and those vendors Application Service Providers (ASPs).....consarnit!

not so fast...
The following picture was taken when the unit was sitting about 5 feet from my laptop. I'm using it as my uplink as I just moved into a new development with no neighbors to steal wifi from. Literally only 2 other (WPA2) networks are in range. Consequentially, this can't be blamed on interference:
Also funny, I had to reconnect twice while uploading that photo to twitpic earlier since the unit dropped my connection. The problem is intermittent and hurts all three devices connected to it, not just my crappy laptop.
tl;dr
... it's okay, but not near worth the money. Instead, buy a 3G card and a router that you can slot it into. -
Re:Subject
From the mouth of the TWC CEO:
Link #1 "Viacom is trying to extort another $39 million annually"
Link #2 Viacom threatens to block TWC subscribers from accessing their free online content. They not only insinuate this to TWC during negotiations, but apparently also to subscribers using TWC's ISP as evidenced by this screenshot.

Viacom will block free Web video
Take a look at the popup that's showing up on websites owned by Viacom -- any of 'em, MTV.com, VH1.com, etc. The text says, in part "Attention Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks customers, starting tonight, you will lose your favorite MTV shows on TV and online because of a dispute with Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks." Here's a screen shot: http://twitpic.com/ycvx It's that phrase "and online" that's really troubling. What does Viacom mean by that? If the statement's true and not just a scare tactic, then it either means: 1) They're going to take all their video content off the Web and ruin it for everybody. 2) They're somehow going to block Time Warner Cable / Bright House/ Roadrunner subscribers only from seeing their free video content, probably by blocking a range of IP addresses. Internal conversations here at Time Warner Cable indicate that Viacom's going to do the latter: block our customers from the same full Web experience that they provide everyone else for free. What will that do for the future of online video? We're not sure, but one thing's positive: it won't be good.
