Detekt version 2.0 is out (Jul 28, 2015)
##
- DETEKT
What is Detekt and how does it work?
"Detekt is a free tool that scans your computer for traces of known surveillance spyware used by governments to target and monitor human rights defenders and journalists around the world. By alerting them to the fact that they are being spied on, they will have the opportunity to take precautions.
It was developed by security researchers and has been used to assist in Citizen Lab's investigations into government use of spyware against human rights defenders, journalists and activists as well as by security trainers to educate on the nature of targeted surveillance.
Amnesty International is partnering with Privacy International, Digitale Gesellschaft and the Electronic Frontier Foundation to release Detekt to the public for the first time."

"Why are we releasing a new version of Detekt?
Since its first release last year, some cases have been successfully identified with Detekt. Leaked information from Hacking Team in July 2015 revealed the source code of the current version of Hacking Team RCS[2] - prompting the company to announce it be discontinuing this product and introducing a new version by the end of the year. However, Hacking Team's older software may still remain in use by Hacking Team's customers. We hope that this updated version of Detekt may help to surface new cases of attacks against human rights activists, journalists and others."

Re:Here's what I heard:
"It doesn't matter which is cheaper if Linux can only play a very small subset of the games."
Times are changing.
If you don't pay attention, you may miss what's happening.
Currently, 22.5% of Steam's catalog works under Linux; 1346 games and those are not the 1346 crappiest Indie games either.
There really are more than enough great games on Steam to justify buying a $200+ video card just for Linux gaming - I've done it and don't regret doing it.
"Very small subset" simply no longer applies. Linux support for games is being added left and right.
In fact, today we'll get another port by Feral.
Probably either "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor" or "Alien: Isolation".
There's a whole bunch more great stuff coming up soon.
And a couple of months from now the Steam Machines. -

Native messaging support is on Microsoft's radar. If they don't do something like that, IE is likely to be around for a very long time. Or companies will just Chrome instead.

Surely they mean alleged copyright holder ? Or "because of a copyright dispute" ?
The way it is written now it is ordinary Slander. Besides, why do it all, just don't show the tweet at all and just inform only the poster of the problem is a far more civilized way of handling this.

Re:Ah yes, let's talk about gender politics some m
Well, the threats were made publicly over twitter. Brianna screen shotted them and tweeted them. Is there any claim that "no, there are other, privately delivered threats that are of a different nature than these?"
So, we've seen the threats. "I, anonymous person on the internet likely several states away from you am going to drop everything, drive to your house and commit murder because I hate feminist opinions on video games!"
Really? Because that happens? People do that?
There is a difference between protected free speech (even though vile and repugnant as this) and a "true threat," which is actually a crime. There is no hard and fast formula for what a true threat is, and it varies by jurisdiction. It's a "preponderance of circumstances" kind of thing. Lots of little boxes you can check off that, taken together, can add up to a true threat.
Are the speaker and the victim acquainted in any way? I'll take a threat from a jilted ex or a business partner far more seriously than a random stranger.
How serious is the nature of their dispute? Personal grievances, like a messy divorce, or political power issues, like threats against a politician or judge I'll take more seriously than those against a random person with no power or authority over a general and nebulous issue like "gender politics in video games."
Does the threatener have any ability to carry out the threat? In what proximity to the victim are they? While we don't know the location of the threatener, given that the vast majority of people on the internet are nowhere near you, it's unlikely the threatener had any ability to carry out the threat.
Does the threatener have any kind of history of violence? I'd take a threat from ISIS over depictions of Muhammad seriously, or threats by skinheads against federal judges trying a racially sensitive case. People in or associated with their groups have actually done these things in the past. But gamers? They do nothing. I mean, literally, they do nothing. They sit on the couch and mash buttons and do nothing constructive or destructive at all. They are inert masses. But they sure do talk! If
.00001% of the threats of rape and murder communicated over XBox Live were carried out, the streets would be ankle deep in blood. So, here you've got a random stranger, unknown to Wu, not personally jilted but politically motivated, who is likely states away from her and completely unable to act, publicly announcing that they are going to commit rape and murder over gender politics in video games, as a representative of a group of people who say 12 horrific things to strangers every day before breakfast and never actually do a damn thing.
On what planet would any reasonable person take that seriously?
In investigating, you also have to ask "cui bono?" Who benefits? Making such a threat advances exactly whose agenda? The FBI is doing nothing because they believe in all likelihood she made the thing up herself, creating a throwaway twitter account that did nothing but spew a single scripted set of death threats. But they can't prove it was her so they're not going to prosecute her for making a false claim, but can't say "we think it was her" and embarrass somebody, discouraging actual victims from reporting crimes, without proof. They'll find "the real threatener" right about the time O.J. finds "the real killers." Why would she do that? Well, she has a history of histrionics on a transgender forum, so she's not exactly the most stable of people, and sure has benefited monetarily from the attention.
And absolutely no one, not a single person, is coming to hurt her.
If when the entire facade completely collapses (they always do eventually...I've seen this same kind of manufactured persona and outrage in another industry), will you recant your position?

Re:Mod parent up!
This is interesting but I'd like to see some proof of it.
"(Nerval's Lobster) actually worked for us before the acquisition, writing for our standalone news site experiment. Later on he moved over to Dice and took over their news site instead.
He goes through the same submission process as everyone else, and we don't post everything he submits." source
Not everything, just 570/767 stories. All of of the current ones have at least one link back to a story on Dice. The really old ones (from 2012 or so) all link back to his own stuff at the ill-fated SlashBI
"Nerval's Lobster (nkolakowski@slashdotmedia.com, nkolakowski@geek.net) submissions start to show up. We've [slashdot.org] already [slashdot.org] established [slashdot.org] that Nerval's Lobster is Nick Kolakowski, a slashdot employee submitting paid content as user-submitted stories"source (with lots more interesting comments linked)
See also: The Slashdot FAQ which lists him as Slashdot editor, his Twitter profile which lists him as a Slashdot editor, homepage which lists him as a senior Slashdot editor, Google+ page (same), LinkedIn (same), and so on and so on.
So, yes, can we stop with the charade already?

More interesting is the security, and Cicada.
Krebs is overloaded by train-wreck picnickers
Noel Biderman CEO of How Low Can We Go, trading as Avid Media.
Some of his demonstrably patent bullshit about their security.
"We have always had the confidentiality of our customers' information foremost in our minds, and have had stringent security measures in place".
Um, encryption - have you heard of it? And PCI - yeah, right, a bus protocol. The "security" fail company - they would have done better employing CyCura® the "binary ex-situ bioremediation system".
I'm guessing they got confused and deployed this Cycura instead. Which'd explain why alarms didn't go off until after the successful attack. When their teeth started grinding.
Candidate for sociopath of the year award, Joel Eriksson, CTO, Cycura, we will continue to be a leader in the services we provide. "I have worked with leading companies around the world to secure their businesses. I have no doubt, based on the work I and my company are doing, Avid Life Media will continue to be a strong, secure business,".
Continue? Fail. To continue you need to start somewhere.
Secure? Fail.Makes me wonder if he faked his widely promoted cracking of the Cicada.
This is the most interesting bit
Anyone else see similarities and strangely missing information? His story.
He certainly he fucked up big time "protecting" his client, and he shouldn't have (because he does seem to have the ability to know how to secure a system).
Curiouser and curiouser. But not so curious I want to follow that rabbit down a hole.

Re:Can someone answer me this?
The thing with Reddit is there is just a +/- system. There is no taxonomy in why you moderate someone + or -.Everyone also gets an equal vote, which for some types of discussion, is best.
With Slashdot points are randomly distributed and you can't both moderate and comment, which is appropriate for other types of discussion.. In that way Slashdot got a lot of things right.
The problem neither site is a one size fits all solution for moderation. For actual tech discussion I want Slashdot's moderation. For pictures of Cats I want Reddit's.
Slashdot's moderation and "Anonymous Coward" account also prevented bandwagoning on the Brianna Wu Interview despite her trying to get her twitter followers to do exactly that. They didn't have the same power that they did on Reddit or Twitter so they really didn't affect the conversation.
Usenet just needed a good moderation system built on top of it.
Personally I wouldn't be opposed to 3 separate types of 'moderation' that can be enabled/disabled.
- No moderation. 4Chan, Usenet
- Everyone gets to moderation Reddit
- Not everyone gets to moderate. Slashdot. Mod points are handed out at random.
Each have their advantages or disadvantages. The "inline sharing" is something that should be done client side anyway. After using reddit for a few years and coming back to Slashdot I realize how much more I like markdown for just doing forum posts. Not that I have a problem with HTML but it takes a bit longer to type out the same content. Add a web front end and call it a day.
The best part is if you made it a RFC people could run their own usenet circles. I would love to get a slashdot replacement going outside of corporate control. If you host nodes in a few countries it would be hard to take down. (It's how Usenet was designed).
I'm ready to jump ship from Reddit and Slashdot to somewhere else and would prefer if that somewhere else was a protocol rather than a specific site.
It's kind of come to a head now that there is nothing really left for people to just discuss stuff. Slashdot sold out to Dice. Fark and Reddit sold out to SJWs and "mainstream". Voat is just reimplementing Reddit, but poorly (IMHO).
Why isn't 'moderation' in a RFC yet? It's something that could probably be nailed out by now as we've tried multiple different methods.
I personally prefer Slashdot's style of moderation for most things. (Where its limited to -2 to +5, and you have taxonomy built in). But for some things I prefer Reddit's where everyone gets a vote. Let people write their own implementations of the RFC and let anyone incorporate it into their website. Slashdot and Reddit are open source in the same way that OpenSSL was. Technically open source but such a pain in the ass to get running & modify for most people it wasn't worth it (and we see how that turned out).
The nice thing about it being an RFC is that most of this stuff can be implemented client side. I can write my own app to discuss things. NNTP just needed distributed moderation like Slashdot.

Secret 3G Intel Chip Gives Snoops Backdoor Access
Secret 3G Intel Chip Gives Snoops Backdoor PC Access
vPro processors allow remote access even when computer is turned offPaul Joseph Watson | Infowars.com | September 26, 2013
http://www.infowars.com/91497/
"Intel Core vPro processors contain a "secret" 3G chip that allows remote disabling and backdoor access to any computer even when it is turned off.
Although the technology has actually been around for a while, the attendant privacy concerns are only just being aired. The "secret" 3G chip that Intel added to its processors in 2011 caused little consternation until the NSA spying issue exploded earlier this year as a result of Edward Snowden's revelations.
In a promotional video for the technology, Intel brags that the chips actually offer enhanced security because they don't require computers to be "powered on" and allow problems to be fixed remotely. The promo also highlights the ability for an administrator to shut down PCs remotely "even if the PC is not connected to the network," as well as the ability to bypass hard drive encryption.
"Intel actually embedded the 3G radio chip in order to enable its Anti Theft 3.0 technology. And since that technology is found on every Core i3/i5/i7 CPU after Sandy Bridge, that means a lot of CPUs, not just new vPro, might have a secret 3G connection nobody knew about until now,"reports Softpedia.
Jeff Marek, director of business client engineering for Intel, acknowledged that the company's Sandy Bridge" microprocessor, which was released in 2011, had "the ability to remotely kill and restore a lost or stolen PC via 3G."
"Core vPro processors contain a second physical processor embedded within the main processor which has it's own operating system embedded on the chip itself," writes Jim Stone. "As long as the power supply is available and and in working condition, it can be woken up by the Core vPro processor, which runs on the system's phantom power and is able to quietly turn individual hardware components on and access anything on them."
Although the technology is being promoted as a convenient way for IT experts to troubleshoot PC issues remotely, it also allows hackers or NSA snoops to view the entire contents of somebody's hard drive, even when the power is off and the computer is not connected to a wi-fi network.
It also allows third parties to remotely disable any computer via the "secret" 3G chip that is built into Intel's Sandy Bridge processors. Webcams could also be remotely accessed.
"This combination of hardware from Intel enables vPro access ports which operate independently of normal user operations," reports TG Daily. "These include out-of-band communications (communications that exist outside of the scope of anything the machine might be doing through an OS or hypervisor), monitoring and altering of incoming and outgoing network traffic. In short, it operates covertly and snoops and potentially manipulates data."
Not only does this represent a privacy nightmare, it also dramatically increases the risk of industrial espionage.
The ability for third parties to have remote 3G access to PCs would also allow unwanted content to be placed on somebody's hard drive, making it easier for intelligence agencies and corrupt law enforcement bodies to frame people.
"The bottom line? The Core vPro processor is the end of any pretend privacy," writes Stone. "If you think encryption, Norton, or anything else is going to ensure your privacy, including never hooking up to the web at all, think again. There is now more than just a ghost in the machine."

The article had exactly the intended effect. She got to claim she was a victim on twitter. [Archive]
I read all 300 toxic questions for my @slashdot interview, here are the ones I can answer
1. Yes, I like peanut M&MsShe got exactly what she was going for. She never intended to answer any questions. She's just run out of venues to call her out on her bullshit. She heard Slashdot used to do 'tech', probably knew someone at Dice and got it put in. I wonder what Slashdot's traffic looked like today when she actively tried to get her followers to brigade Slashdot
And it's pretty easy to tell who they are. They have no Karma, didn't even Create an account
Meanwhile some of us have been on Slashdot for 10+ years and have decent post histories to fall back on. She claims it was GamerGaters that did this but most of them are too young to have ever found Slashdot.
These people can't handle the truth/criticism.

To Ms. Wu, does the torrent of unfounded accusations made against you on the internet ever affect your real life?
Mr. Wu is the author of a torrent of unfounded accusation. Just read his fucking twitter posts; https://twitter.com/spacekatga...

Re:This just in...
Hi. I'm the idiot you're talking about. See above conversation and note that you're making a slight, yet important, misrepresentation here.
No misrepresentation.
"hundreds of photos I’d taken of my wife, my daughter, and me, grouped together by Google’s facial-recognition technology in the company’s Photos app, all snapped over the course of a little more than a month. The problem was, I’d deleted all of those pictures". That is what backups do. Conflating "I thought I turned off backups" with "I'm shocked that local copies I deleted still exist in the backups" is idiotic. Especially coming from someone whose profession is supposed to be fact checking.I had backup disabled through G+. Later, I installed Photos, and must have not disabled backup through the Photos app before I uninstalled it a day or two after install. A month later, a bunch of my photos taken after uninstall were on the Google Photos web site. I understand NOW that Photos is tied to is an Android function, but that's emphatically NOT clear from actually using the Photos app.
The analogy given earlier in this story is correct - you stepped on the remote control for your TV and are surprised (and shocked) it's still turned on. It happens. But most people don't go to such lengths to claim it wasn't clearly explained when you turned on the TV - or "conclude" it's "stealth".
You failed to bother reading the documentation for a backup app. I read the documentation before posting. I agree it could have been made clearer (read my first post on the subject) - I also still hold that it'd do little good.
To then claim it was not "emphatically NOT clear from actually using the Photos app" seems a little duplicitous don't you think? Given you didn't just install it, you configured it, and enabled backups (oh nose it was stealth, and, um, the internet pixies!) - there's a critical difference. I don't whether you make that omission because you're embarrassed by your mistake, or whether it's to defend your job - writing click-bait "stories", doesn't matter.
We all make mistakes - but only bloody journalists make money from it.
I sorry you don't like being called an idiot. I'm sorry you feel the need to defend histrionic "stealth" claims. I'm sorry you didn't bother to either read the full Gizmodo article you claim motivated you to "try" the app - or just failed to process the "creepy" comments. What part of "turn on the backup sync, then uninstall the app" left you "feeling" that you'd emphatically turned off backup?
"It should be simpler" and "It should be clearer" aren't compatible with a desire to "just click" and think later. But don't let it stop you wanting the unachievable - and I won't criticise how making those claims, and catering to those sentiments, is part of your job.
I wouldn't trust your "news editor" critical thinking skills to run a bath. Stick to your usual level of insightful "reporting" - like your discovery of "tatter tots rolled in Dorito dust" (really a wonder of our modern age - Pulitzer material). I await your new campaign to ban bad weather and sharp corners on furniture (just think of the headlines) - don't forget to lobby for larger toilet seats, it's outrageous that their isn't a warning that people who aren't, um, anorexic, can get stuck in there! [sigh - just don't fucking video that] -
Re:redditers will flip out.
The headline is a little clickbait-y, but the article is neutral. how do you associate one headline with the "SJW-side"?
I find your sneer about a "parliament" rather odd. It's not a "bogeyman" to note that people who generally take one side of an ideological issue will... generally take one side of an ideological issue. Yes, there are disagreements within teams, but it's not unfair to make general statements about ideological teams when those teams usually act like teams.
How many do I need to post to prove my point? Here's Arthur Chu, the self-described "social justice stormtrooper," again expressing the "SJW side": Reddit’s Terrorists Have Won: Ellen Pao and the Failure to Rebrand Web 2.0. A big feminist blog: Pao! Right in the Kisser: Reddit assholes celebrate CEO’s resignation after a week of abuse. SJWs Brianna Wu and Randi Harper are lining up just as one would expect. The NY Times puts their editorial view directly into the news. I'm sure there will be more in the coming days.

See it's stuff like this that just helps prove everything people are saying about SJWs and then some. There's an absurd amount of evidence out there of SJWs doxing and even SWATting people but you just keep moving the goalposts further and further and further while outright denying it. You've gone so far off the deep end that you're claiming SJWs don't even exist anymore despite anyone being able to hop on tumblr or jezebel or feministcurrent and see them first hand.

Re:Algorithm
However it happened, the end effect is the same. First Google called black people gorillas, now they discriminate against women.
What is it going to take before you no longer feel compelled to make excuses for them? Do they have to go skynet on everyone before you think that *maybe* they should be a little more careful with their AI algorithms? Or is it simpler than that? Maybe they just have to negatively impact a few white male programmers for you to get upset about it.
