Illiad's take on RIAA's amnesty
Here's Illiad's take from Sunday's User Friendly
.Humour or prescience? I'm not sure, but I love the form number.

Re:Huh?
I remember in the mid-90s Garth Brooks became a part of the "movement" to stop used CD sales, or at least keep used CDs separate from new CDs. (The Warehouse was just starting to sell used CDs in addition to new CDs.) Anyway, he was speaking out against used CD sales, and the record companies were giving less money for advertising to record stores that also sold used CDs. A record store in Eugene, Oregon (where I lived at the time) had a Garth Brooks BBQ.
They were literally burning the CDs.
Ironically, Garth Brooks is probably one of the very few people who actually make a decent living off of the music industry.
(And I was going to get off topic at this point talking about how I hate Garth Brooks and not because I hate all country music. I do dislike most of it but some stuff is good like Johnny Cash, the Dixie Chicks and Mojo Nixon. Buuuuut that would be getting pretty off topic so I won't mention it.) -
Books vs. Strips
The article is also mixing comic books and comic strips. Sure, stuff like Dilbert , User Friendly, The Boondocks, and Achewood work well on the web. They're short and easy to read. Most people who read comic books, however, relish the strip to the store, holding it in their hands, filling up the long white boxes...

SoBig ???
Please, people, you can't blame Microsoft for SoBig.
You have to MANUALLY (no MIME exploits, no nothing) execute a file YOU HAVEN'T ASKED FOR AND YOU DONT KNOW WHAT IS !!
Jeez, only fucking idiots would get hit by SoBig.
SoBig happened to target Windows systems only. But nothing would prevent me from writing a totally identical version, which would do exactly the same thing, on a Linux system. Or BSD, or Solaris.
Don't blame the operating system here. People who executes unknown files, particularly unrequested files received by mail, should be hung by the balls in the nearest telephone pole.

Kernel Hacking How-ToA few easy steps on how to become a kernel hacker (with sincere apologies to all kernel hackers):
- wear sunglasses at night
- get your caffein IV
- eat cold pizza
- 100BaseT IV, maybe IEEE802.11g
- get a plush tux
- avoid direct sunlight
- print out the entire kernel code and pin it to the wall (might require additional houses)
- eat more cold pizza
- subscribe Playboy(tm)
Now, I've never met or know any kernel hackers, so the points above are just wild guesses... ;) -

Linux is doomed by the SCO thing?
But that can't be because . .
.
Netcraft has confirmed . . . SCO is dead
Nobody really knows what SCO died of, but two days ago, their site went offline. It could bave been an attack of mad hackers or the SOBIG worm, or just a BIG ASS WHOOPIN by someone they're suing.
SCO, we will miss you. No longer will your name grace /.'s front page. -

Loopback anyone?
Microsoft should take a clue from User Friendly!
We (a 30,000 student Midwest University) are currently thinking about making our DNS servers authoritive for windowsupdate.com and and pointing the A record bac k to loopback. -
Someone should point these guys to UF
You know, end users would really know how we felt about them if they just read User Friendly a couple times a week. I think it would really enlighten the users

Disclaimer: That was blatantly ripped from a User Friendly comic. Sadly, their search engine doesn't seem to be working quite as well as the Penny-Arcade one.
This was the closest I could find...

Re:poetry generated by...Yeah!
We've mastered the singleplayer levels and done the campaign over and over (and over). Now we want to try out this multiplayer thing we keep hearing about.

Columbia Internet
Vancouver, Canada is the home of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. It also has a rich history of tech-related sites. One of the most fun is to visit the folks over at User Friendly. They're in New Westminster, about a 30 minute drive outside Vancouver, and are right next door to Paralynx, aka Mind Link, the company that inspired Illiad to start the User Friendly strip (he called the company "Columbia Internet" because Paralynx is at the Columbia Skytrain station stop).
They're a great bunch of folks to visit, so if you're on the West Coast of Canada, drop by and say hi to them. -
So does this mean...
...Erwin will be getting an upgrade?

Re:Why not?I am pretty sure that people camping out in front of a Gateway Store for its grand opening is one of the signs of the Apocalypse.
Of course if a Linux Store (aren't penguins cute), BSD Store (get that by a zoning committee), or an Apple Store opened up in a new place, then campers are to be expected.

Oh my.
It's obvious this article missed the ball, it's a good thing the artist at UserFriendly saw the true nature of the beast.

Already (sorta) working for someWhile not a true micropayment, this concept is already working for some online web-comic providers. I've subscribed to my favorite, Sluggy Freelance for $10 a year. I also forked over $10/yr for a subscription to My Comics Page solely for the ability to read back articles of Bloom County.
Other sites have also been experimenting with this sort of thing, like User Friendly's membership program.
So I don't think it's a huge step to get to micropayments - the only real advantage micropayments have over the current methods is that you can try content earlier for lower risk (ie, $.25 vs. $10).
And of course people have mentioned Apple's success with single song downloading. I think people are ready/willing to pay for what they get online, the price just needs to be right.

Re:No Floppy?
Floppy drives should no longer be manufactured and all unused floppy disk should be placed in a large pile and burned. Exsisting floppy disk can be kept for archival purposes, but since they're floppies they should probably have their data transfered to something worth having it on.
Here's the starting point of a nice little rant on the subject. -

Re:Personal Whine
Just like every other PA, that is just not in any way funny. It makes absolutely no sense. It just leaves me with the sense that it was supposed to be offensive but the comic is so badly written I can't even tell why.
The same could be said about any given UF comic, except that the PA comic would invariably have better art. Anyway, the reason I linked to that specific comic is because it was a comment on a stunt pulled by Illiad (I also could've linked to this one, which was made when Illiad et al started whoring themselves out with their "UF Media" thing, or I could've linked to this one, which has a cameo by a PvP character and depicts said character beating the crap out of Illiad). Now, let's take a few random strips. Where's the funny? None of those strips are funny. Now, here's some funny Penny Arcade strips chosen mostly at random (by randomly scrolling through the archive drop down list). Most of those are funny. The last one you'd only understand if you were a gamer and had played Daytona USA, but the news post from that strip explains it. Then you see the funny.
User Friendly is like Dilbert, but less funny, and with crappier art, and lame geek storylines that even most geeks find ridiculous. But if you like it, good for you.

Ack!
Hate Microsoft; hate spam.
Hate Microsoft; hate spam.
Evil greedy corporation; slimy pollution of the Internet.
Illegally abusing their monopoly; illegally hijacking servers.
Overpriced software; lowest mortgage rates ever.
Bug-ridden products; barnyard porn.
Embrace and extend; extend your manhood.
No concept of security; special offers on SystemWorks 2003.
Never innovating; always innovating.
I'm siding with Microsoft.

Why is SCO doing this?
This pretty much sums it up for me

Summed Up Nicely
The User Friendly comic strip summed the whole SCO thing up nicely here. Funny? Hidden truth? You decide.
