Re:Strangely,
Hyperbole aside, that sentence raises an excellent point. Most likely he was referring to Thomas Jefferson's idea of an "academical village". Therein lies the strangeness. Who would have guessed that nearly 2 centuries later, there are no academical village papers on cream cheese? "Bizarre" is an understatement.

For those who are so inclined, there's a substantial community of people interested in the geeky mechanics of antiquarian books. See, for instance, Rare Book School.
Also, you should not underestimate the l337ness of librarians -- they are all over the database world, fans of the semantic web, and friends of freedom of speech and even open source.

I don't know who this Prescott is but I would suggest you avail yourself of one of the most important books on politics, economics and history ever written, namely Max Weber's "The protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism". Probably in some sort of top 5 list with Capital and On Liberty. You will realise that the religion plays a very large part indeed in everything American, particularly attitude towards work.

Jefferson's crystal ball
"The spirit of the times may alter, will alter. Our rulers will become corrupt, our people careless. A single zealot may commence persecutor, and better men be his victims. It can never be too often repeated that the time for fixing every essential right on a legal basis is while our rulers are honest and ourselves united. From the conclusion of [their] war [for independence, a nation begins] going down hill. It will not then be necessary to resort every moment to the people for support. They will be forgotten, therefore, and their rights disregarded. They will forget themselves but in the sole faculty of making money, and will never think of uniting to effect a due respect for their rights. The shackles, therefore, which shall not be knocked off at the conclusion of [that] war will remain on [them] long, will be made heavier and heavier, till [their] rights shall revive or expire in a convulsion." --Thomas Jefferson: Notes on Virginia Q.XVII, 1782. Re:Speed of what?Er, no. It has to do with the idea that cause must preceed effect in all reference frames.
Special relativity starts with the notion that you will measure light as going C no matter how fast you're going, or what direction you're going. (Why? Because that's what experiments showed when they tried to find an absolute frame of reference - if there were one, you could find it by looking at how light behaves). Briefly, something going faster than C means that you can find a reference frame in which cause follows effect - time travel.
The way the math shakes out, all of special relativity is based upon the notion that light in a vacuum travels along the geodesic:dx^2 + dy^2 + dz^2 - dt^2 = 0
and that simultaneity happens along those geodesics. C, the "speed of light in a vacuum" is critical as the normalizing factor for distance and time (in doing SR and GR, velocities are best expressed as fractions of C - so half the "speed of light in a vacuum" is the unitless 0.5 - unitless because time and distance have the same unit).
Now, if light travels slower than C in any particular medium, even in a vacuum, as long as it's consistent in all reference frames that's no great shakes for special relativity per se - it just means that light isn't as special to space-time as we thought and that the M-M experiments seemed to show. If light travels faster than C, *that* is what breaks special relativity and the definition of simultaneity. In essence, it means that you can define a reference frame in which an effect will preceed its cause.
If you want to learn more about it, google on terms (along with "special relativity") like "light cone," "simultaneity," "absolute past," "absolute future," and "absolute elsewhere." For the history of special relativity, start with the link I included earier, or "Michelson" and "Morley". -
911 Truth Movement
The genesis of the new cladestine governement began on 9/11/2001 with the horrific terrorist events that occured that fateful day. Summarily the US Congress gave the president carte blanche to basically use whatever means necessary to bring the terrorists to justice and protect the American people from future attacks.
Today there is a strong and growing 911 Truth movement trying to find answers to legitimate questions about the inconsistencies and omissions in the official NIST and 9/11 commisions reports. Our US government has been less then cooperative in providing images, videos, and audio tapes that could either confirm or deny their assertion that middle east terrorist without assistance were soley responsible for 9/11.
Do your own research and see the pictures and videos for yourself.

Re:Being hit by a (semi) truck
It was totaled due to its unibody construction. The door could be fixed relatively cheap (few hundred bucks), but the problem would be the damage to the quarter panel. That panel is actually a structural part of the frame of the car, and is impossible to replace. In fact, if you look carefully you'll notice that it actually extends up over the doors, all the way to the front mirror and front fender. Instead, they'd probably repair it by cutting out the dented section, hand-forming a patch from sheet metal, and welding it into place. Needless to say, that would be expensive.
In addition, there was damage to many different parts of the car. Even though the damage to each individual one was mostly minor, it still necessitates replacing many different parts, which means the cost is the same as if those parts were totally destroyed. -

Re:Being hit by a (semi) truck
Well, you'd probably want to fix this, too. Not to mention that the driver's side window wouldn't roll down more than a couple inches. (While I was in the car, talking to AAA on a borrowed cell phone, a cop approached me, and without thinking I started to roll down the window. The cop kinda laughed and said, "I wouldn't recommend doing that.")
You probably know this, but totaling just means the cost of getting the car up to its condition prior to the accident (or at least a close facsimile) is greater than (the value of the car prior to the accident - the current value of the car). The value of the car was ~$4500 (at least that's what the insurance company gave me), so presumably their adjustor decided that fixing the car would've cost a lot more than that. Or, at least more than that once they've subtracted what they could get by selling off the car.

Being hit by a (semi) truck
I'd be terrified of being smushed by a truck while driving one.
Almost a year ago, my wife and I were driving our 1995 Honda Civic at 70 MPH (the speed-limit) down I-85 in North Georgia, towards Atlanta. We were in the right lane, without a worry on our mind. All of a sudden, *WHUMP*, the car gets hit on the left-rear quarter-panel and starts spinning out of control. *WHUMP* The 18-wheeler that hit us the first time hits us a second time on the driver's side door (where I was at the time). It might have hit us a third time, but I'm not certain. Things were going pretty fast at that time and I was just trying to keep from dying. Needless to say, I survived. Amazingly, my wife and I both got out of that accident without a scratch or even a bruise. The car was totaled - in insurance terms, that is. I was still able to drive it off the exit ramp (at the cops' request).
Point is, I've often thought about what would have happened if we had been in an SUV. I suspect the situation would have ended up worse, not better, although I admit this is just a supposition. Alternatively, if we had also been driving an 18-wheeler, it could have been very, very ugly.
Here are some pictures of the car after the accident. Oh, and not that it's relevant to the subject at hand, but a witness (another truck driver) reported seeing the driving of the tractor-trailer on her cell phone at the time of the accident. Also, after she quit trying to blame the accident on us (we had two witnesses that verified our version of the story), she broke down and said that if she's found at fault for this accident she'll get fired from her job, just like she did from her last truck driving job when she hit a car.

Effectiveness of Instruction Set Randomization
A 2005 paper by David Evans, "Where's the FEEB? The Effectiveness of Instruction Set Randomization", demonstrates how to remotely determine the key for this protection scheme in under 6 minutes. The paper goes on to examines diversity defenses more broadly to examine schemes that might be resistant to such attacks. The author also gave an interesting talk at USENIX Security Symposium on What Biology Can (and Can't) Teach Us About Security, which is probably a better paper for this article to point to.

E-book Libraries
Don't forget that there are not just libraries of book metadata online, there are libraries of complete books:
- Project Gutenberg
- Newton's Library
- Bartleby II
- Electronic Text Center at UVA Library
- Tech Books for Free
- etc.
While these libraries are by no means as extensive as something like Amazon, it's nice having the full text of the books themselves.

English needs to be fixedFrom http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~an4m/fun/future-engli
s h:Having chosen English as the preferred language in the EEC, the European Parliament has commissioned a feasability study in ways of improving efficiency in communications between Government departments.
European officials have often pointed out that English spelling is unnecessary difficult; for example: cough, plough, rough, through and thorough. What is clearly needed is a phased programme of changes to iron out these anomalies. The programme would, of course, be administered by a committee staff at top level by participating nations.
In the first year, for example, the committee would suggest using 's' instead of the soft 'c'. Sertainly, sivil servants in all sities would reseive this news with joy. Then the hard 'c' could be replaced by 'k' sinse both letters are pronounsed alike. Not only would this klear up konfusion in the minds of klerikal workers, but typewriters kould be made with one less letter.
There would be growing enthusiasm when in the sekond year, it was anounsed that the troublesome 'ph' would henseforth be written 'f'. This would make words like 'fotograf' twenty per sent shorter in print.
In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reash the stage where more komplikated shanges are possible. Governments would enkourage the removal of double letters which have always been a deterent to akurate speling.
We would al agre that the horible mes of silent 'e's in the languag is disgrasful. Therefor we kould drop thes and kontinu to read and writ as though nothing had hapend. Shocking level of knowledge from slashdot readersThe number of untrue or inaccurate statements in the posts about this article just go to show how little slashdot readers seem to actually think about the article (like that's a surprise).
First off, as stated in an earlier port, 2.45GHz is NOT the resonant frequency of water molecules, otherwise only the surface of food in microwaves would be heated.
http://rabi.phys.virginia.edu/HTW/microwave_ovens
. htmlCell phones work at 850MHz or 1850MHz, so it's not looking good right from the off.
Second off, as stated by the article, "For instance, a pair of mobiles each with 2 Watts of transmitter output will take three minutes to boil a large free range egg."
Four watts. Four joules per second.
Lets look at this. I'll use some glaring assumptions just to get an estimate of the time taken to cook an egg with 4W (with is a factor of ten greater than you'd really expect from two mobile phone).
First off, lets assume that you want to heat the egg (70g - it's a large egg) from 20C to 100C. I'm not sure if that constitutes cooking, but it'll do for now.
Lets also assume that the energy required to heat the egg is similar to that of water (4186 J/kg).
So energy required is 4186 * 0.07 * 80 = 23kJ.
At 4W, we're talking 5860 seconds, or 98 minutes. And that's assuming 100% efficiency, which definitely won't be the case in this situation. (Not forgetting the already incorrect factor of ten for the phone output power, frequency of operation and burst nature of phone comms).
By the by, I discovered this page on egg boiling science as I finished writing this post:
http://newton.ex.ac.uk/teaching/CDHW/egg/
Perhaps someone with more patience than me can more accurately calculate the energy required to boil a 70g egg?

Re:Development Practices
There are no silver bullets no, but there are tools that can help. Splint is a good example of something you can employ to make static checking for buffer overflows, and various dynamic memory errors like misuse of null pointers, dead storage, memory leaks, and dangerous aliasing in C and C++. It doesn't make your code bullet proof, but it can catch a lot of errors that you probably wouldn't otherwise spot. There's a nice paper about what it can do (warning PDF).

Re:10 years later..."you will"
Every time I heard that at the time, my thoughts were immediately drawn to some BSDM pr0n I was treated to at some point. The top was in the midst of beating her pet rather savagely and asked, "Are you at all sorry?" The pet answered, "Yes, I am!" and the mistress immediately said, "You WILL be!"
Somehow that sort of attitude didn't seem to be all that different from the typical AT&T mentality, quite frankly.
Everything links back to pr0n. It's almost like Bacon numbers.

Re:From the summary...
Indeed, scientists' work is certainly important, imaginative and repetitive... I'd leave out the boring part, because I think nearly everybody who has ever published a scientific paper would agree with me that doing so is actually extremely exciting and interesting. Knowing that you (and your colleagues) have discovered or observered something that nobody else ever has is something that is incredibly exciting. I just wish that there was a better method in place to convey that sense of excitement over to people before or while they are in college, since unfortunately unless you wind up working in a lab you probably don't experience it.
What is missing in that survey is "How do scientists communicate?" and the answer is in general "very poorly." The thing that is missing in science is a wealth of communicators that seek to make science interesting to those who don't have the time or inclination to study it. In the recent past that's been somewhat handled by major science fiction writers like Asimov... but now it seems to be a major void in the entire scientific enterprise, which is why so many interest groups can convincingly distort science to their own agendas.
One thing that scientists have to remember, no matter how well otherwise elucidated (like in Richard Hamming's Talk http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~robins/YouAndYourResea rch.html) is that unless you can communicate your research with others, no matter how brilliant, it won't matter unless you spend as much time learning how to write up your findings as you do on the actual experiments themselves. -

Therapy and Medication if needed
Studies have shown (http://www.virginia.edu/topnews/09_16_2004/depre
s sion.html, http://www.ebsconewsletter.com/sutterhealth/e_arti cle000289498.cfm?x=b11,0,w ,http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/08/0408 18085048.htm ) that a combination of talk therapy and medication produce lasting results in chronic depression. If the holiday depression is severe, and seems to start earlier and last longer each year I would recommend seeking help. I have personally gone through this and usually around the holidays (starting at the beginning of November and lasting until a few days after New Year's Day) I am very depressed and have been suicidal (I got to the point a number of times as to where all I had left to do was take the pills or slash my wrists). I started a program that consisted of both medication and therapy (I had chronic depression and some other things so my treatment was longer than people with seasonal depression) and, after a lot of work and help from excellent doctors, I an no longer suffering from depression. It is very important that you get help. It is a disease, many people suffer from it (you are not the only one) and you can be helped. If you chose to enter therapy carefully select your theropist. There are two types that I am aware of: Cognative and Psychodynamic. Without getting into too much detail about the technical differences between the two, stylistically Cognative theropists are your stereo-typical "how does that make you feel" kind of theropist. They tend to maintain a disconnected, anylitical relationship with the patient. They usually have the patient do most of the talking and provide anylitical input. Psychodynamic theropists will connect more with their patients on an emotional level. They will participare more in the coversation (of course, discussing only the patient's issues) and provide more emotional support. The type of theropist you select is, of course, best based on your needs. I would also recommend that the doctor prescribing the medication be different than the person with whom you are receiving theropy. The problems are separate, the emotional issues and the chemical imbalance and, though they can affect eachother, should be delt with separately. If nothing else, get some help, you are not alone, many many people go through this and you do not have to continue to suffer. Help is available and it does work. If anyone out there suffering from depression, find help. It will work! -

Why .xxx won't workIf you're not going to mandate that adult content can only be hosted on
.xxx, then it will be useless for the reasons the fundies want. You know, that bit about not being forced to give up property of your .com domain? You appear mistaken in at several items.
First, it would be technically trivial (although pricey) for sites with
.com hosted porn to convert the entire content to a kid-safe "I agree/I disagree" page, with "I agree" pointing to the .XXX site. The current porn sites don't need to give up their .com entirely -- although I'd bet Playboy wouldn't be happy about the move. Still, it would be a good compromise between property rights and self-regulation; hopefully, the domain registry rules would facilitate such.Next you don't specify what reasons you think the fundies want, nor even what you think they want. I'm guessing you're saying they want Porn off the mainstream net, and that the lack of a XXX mandate means there will still be porn on
.COM and elsewhere. In reality, the fundies don't want it off the mainstream web, they want it gone (which is the basis for the Bush administration's objection to the .XXX creation: the domain would legitimize porn). The fundies also want all sex that isn't guy-topside missionary position within a marriage for the purpose of having kids gone, too... if that.A much bigger problem than you seem to have noticed is that
.com/.net/.org aren't the only domains for finding porn. One of the biggest gallery sites I found is in Hungary. About a third of the galleries are broken, but it still had had about 20 gigabytes worth of pics.... with more added every week. That's not counting the screenshots from the couple hundred DRM-ed .WMV half-hour plus videos they have. (Individual license required, and the TOS page is in Hungarian, so I only downloaded the one.) National subdomains (IE, *.xxx.au, *.xxx.hu, *.xxx.uk, etc.) would also need to be implemented. And, of course, that's only the traffic on port 80. There's Usenet and Bittorrent, too. The fundies are... well, fucked. =)
On the other hand, for those of us with more pragmatic social agendas,
.XXX will be a step towards helping keep the children from wandering in the adult merchandise so easily, and keep you from having to confuse a six year old with more facts of life than they have any interest in. Not the end of the journey, mind you, but a "modest" step. -

Re:Phobia
Have you ever read Alexis de Tocqueville? He writes of "regulation" without knowing to use that word:
http://xroads.virginia.edu/~HYPER/DETOC/ch4_06.htm
"Above this race of men stands an immense and tutelary power, which takes upon itself alone to secure their gratifications and to watch over their fate. That power is absolute, minute, regular, provident, and mild. It would be like the authority of a parent if, like that authority, its object was to prepare men for manhood; but it seeks, on the contrary, to keep them in perpetual childhood: it is well content that the people should rejoice, provided they think of nothing but rejoicing. For their happiness such a government willingly labors, but it chooses to be the sole agent and the only arbiter of that happiness; it provides for their security, foresees and supplies their necessities, facilitates their pleasures, manages their principal concerns, directs their industry, regulates the descent of property, and subdivides their inheritances: what remains, but to spare them all the care of thinking and all the trouble of living?
"Thus it every day renders the exercise of the free agency of man less useful and less frequent; it circumscribes the will within a narrower range and gradually robs a man of all the uses of himself." -

My letter to Joseph Lieberman, D, CTI just sent a letter to Joseph Lieberman, and if you live in either CT or NY I suggest you do the same (send one to Hillary Clinton if you live in NY of course). This is the only way they'll know we don't approve of their actions:
Dear Senator Lieberman,
Today I learned that in two weeks time, you will be introducing a bill along with Senator Clinton titled the "Family Entertainment Protection Act." I would like to request that you reconsider introducing such a bill.
I am 32 years old, college educated, and work as a professional in the chip manufacturing and semiconductor industry here in Connecticut. I am also a gamer. I play all types of video games, including violent ones, and have never felt the urge to commit any violent acts in real life. Much like sports, games are a good stress reliever and can help people to work out their aggressive tendencies in a non-harmful way. There are millions of people like me that are professional adults, have real jobs, and play video games. Guess what? We're also voters and we won't hesitate to send you back to Connecticut in 2006.
The bill that you are prepared to introduce would have the end result of introducing a type of censorship and control that is unprecedented over any type of media, whether it be books, films, or music.
The bill you are proposing limits free speech and the creative expression of the artists that make video games, and don't try to think for one second that games are not an art form. As a United States Senator, you swore an oath to uphold the constitution. The fact that you would even consider introducing such legislation gives me serious doubts about your abilities as a senator and representative of the people.
I have heard conservatives argue that video games contribute to violence in our youth, and I want to make sure that you don't believe those lies either. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, violent crime in schools has declined dramatically since 1994, the same time period that video game sales have increased dramatically. Please see the following study: http://youthviolence.edschool.virginia.edu/violenc e-in-schools/national-statistics.html
In conclusion, if you propose this bill I will not vote for your reelection to the US Senate next November, and will actively encourage everyone I know in Connecticut to do the same.
Don't make the mistake of thinking all of your constituents aren't capable of thinking and acting for themselves. Video games are like any other media and should be controlled by an individual child's parents. If a parent doesn't want their kid playing Grand Theft Auto, they should watch their children and not let them play it. How hard is this if the child is living in the same house as the parent? It is just like any other media, whether it's a book, a movie, or television. The responsbility is the parents and the parents alone to ensure that their kids aren't exposed to things they find offensive. Government should never interfere in this. -

I would argue that this affirms our right to fight against any entity who threatens our freedom, even if that entity is the government itself (that is, if it becomes so corrupt that it no longer represents the will of the people). Moreover, I think the Framers of the Constitution would agree with me: take Thomas Jefferson* as an example. That page makes it pretty clear what Jefferson thought about our right to revolution, doesn't it? If not, this quote (my favorite one by Jefferson) should:"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

Actually, they did let some vacuum in once
Remember when the cargo ship crashed into Mir, causing partial depressurization they even considered fixing? Michael Foale certainly remembers. Any mold still growing in the Spektr module would have been exposed to vacuum and maybe even some UV if the ruptures were large enough.
