The Numbers
82,188 were murdered in the United States in the years ranging from 2001-2006. 2,883 have been kill on US soil since on 2001. Because those 2,883 got more media attention than those 82,188, we have to surrender our privacy to overreacting government. The irony is that none of this will work actually stop terrorists. If they can't keep 3.7 million illegal aliens out of this country entering since 2000, they certainly can't keep a hand full of terrorists from crossing illegally and not reporting a thing. Statistics tell a different story. I question my government's priorities and their methods.

Re:So much for ever visting the US again...
"Well, I have been reluctant to want to visit the US given the rampant paranoia and siege state that seems to be prevalent down there recently, but this pretty much guarantees I won't ever visit again.
It seems the only paranoid one here is you. Why do people keep insisting that the US is a 'siege state'? Is it fashionable to toss out '1984' as if it is even remotely close to the reality? Have you even bothered to read it, or did you just watch the movie? Seriously, thank you for not coming to visit. Maybe you should spend your misguided attention in dealing with your own problems in Quebec."
I first read "1984" in 1984. It's an excellent book. The pronouncements of the Dept. of Homeland Security in the US read so much like something out of the Ministry of Information it's creepy. Sure, it isn't *that* bad, and the book is fiction. "1984" is a long way off. But listen to the presidential candidates in a debate. These people are either afraid, or they wish to instill fear in their audience. They sure act like they are under siege.
Fingerprinting visitors at the border? Why? What's wrong with the picture and name on my passport? It's good enough for identification in my country and most others in the world. Most countries don't fingerprint visitors (Japan being a recent exception). There is truly something special going on in the U.S. This kind of scrutiny of foreigners *used* to be the sort of thing that would come up when making fun of the USSR.
"The chances of your getting ran over by a bus walking out of your front door are possibly 10000% greater than those of you getting 'whisked away' by the black helicopters."
Yes, extraordinary rendition (or simply "illegal rendition"), is astronomically unlikely, but it has happened. And it doesn't have to be that extreme to be a problem. For example, Meher Arrar, a Canadian citizen, was sent for several torture-filled months to a prison in Syria because he happened to pass through the US during his travel -- he was simply "deported". I'm more worried about having my home invaded, being arrested, and held without charge simply because some dingbat at the FBI mixed up my fingerprint with someone else's, as happened to a US citizen in Oregon because of the Madrid bombing a few years ago.
These possibilities are extremely remote, but avoidable. If your fingerprint isn't in the database in the first place, then a false positive isn't possible.
Here's a question: if fingerprints are so important for tracking people, why doesn't the US fingerprint all its citizens for the purposes of identification rather than only the known or suspected criminals? Fingerprint all. Wouldn't that solve the illegal immigrant problem in one fell swoop? And legitimate citizens have nothing to fear, right? I'll tell you why it isn't done: it's the associated stigma and the good sense that the government doesn't really need *that* much information.
Same story. It's the "Welcome -- now, please turn over your fingerprint so we can forever add it to our list of known or suspected criminals and terrorists" thing that really bugs me. If it was foolproof, *maybe*, because I do have nothing to hide. But why should I voluntarily sign myself up for the "mistaken fingerprint match" lottery? When your citizens are fingerprinted or when my country starts doing it for their passport, I'll consider it. But no sooner.
"I sincerely pity Canada for having such brain-washed pansies in their midst; no wonder you guys were never that relevant in the world stage."
Sigh. We'll keep that in mind next time you ask us for troops to fight in places such as Afghanistan. Sorry we didn't participate in the Iraq thing. -

Re:But where to draw the line?To what do you refer when you say the One True Belief? Not believing in religion is not a creed. I don't believe in God in the same way that I don't believe in the Tooth Fairy.
I do agree with your point about the word "atheism". The very fact that there is a word to describe a state of unbelief is very odd and counter productive. There is no similar word for not believing in the Tooth Fairy. The existence of a word to describe unbelief in God lends credence to the possibility of God's existence. I read a very interesting piece on this subject in the Washington Post a few weeks ago. In it, Sam Harris argues the following: Attaching a label to something carries real liabilities, especially if the thing you are naming isn't really a thing at all. And atheism, I would argue, is not a thing. It is not a philosophy, just as "non-racism" is not one. Atheism is not a worldview--and yet most people imagine it to be one and attack it as such. We who do not believe in God are collaborating in this misunderstanding by consenting to be named and by even naming ourselves. He has since been criticised for his views by fellow "atheists", but I think there is a lot of sense in what he's saying. -

Re:Fighting World War Two with robots
All that is nonsense today. World War Two is over and so is the USA/Soviet war, the so-called 'cold war'.
It seems that the Russians under Putin are becoming increasingly threatening to the West and to the USA in particular. There have been a number of incidents of late of Russia testing Western defenses, recently a number of Russian nuclear-capable bomber flights making incursions on NATO airspace and being intercepted by NATO fighters.
http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30100-1280809,00.html
And here:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/09/AR2007080902211.html
Let's not also forget that China is also a serious threat.
That being said, the idea of autonomous fighting machines is not a new one, I recall hours of entertaining reading from Keith Laumers' "BOLO" series, about artificially-intelligent super-tanks. There's an informative Wiki article on the Bolo tanks here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolo_(tank)
The bottom line I guess, is that all of human history proves that the world is not a friendly place. Unilateral disarmament will be happily taken advantage of by powers that care not a whit about anything but gaining more power and territory, and are more than willing to sacrifice huge numbers of people on either/any side towards those goals. If we wish to both survive and remain a relatively free people, then we have no choice but to make sure we are first and best with weapons and battle systems.
Cheers!

COVERUP - My Rejected Submission
A U.S. official overseeing a probe of former Bush aide Karl Rove yesterday refused to give federal investigators copies of "personal files" he deleted from his office computer, after it was discovered he hired a private computer-help company to erase all the hard drives belonging to him and two deputies. Special Counsel Scott J. Bloch hired a firm to perform a DoD-wipe, guaranteeing the files could never be restored. Bloch said he suspected his computer was infected by a virus - an unorthodox remedy. The receipt for the work performed makes no mention of a virus. Bloch refuses to turn over other files saved online and claims no documents relevant to any investigation have been purged. "We don't do a seven-level wipe for a virus," said a manager of Geeks on Call - the firm that was hired.

One of the issuesAs described in The Washington Post:
Sean Lane's purchase was supposed to be a surprise for his wife. Then it appeared as a news headline -- "Sean Lane bought 14k White Gold 1/5 ct Diamond Eternity Flower Ring from overstock.com" -- last week on the social networking Web site Facebook.
Without Lane's knowledge, the headline was visible to everyone in his online network, including 500 classmates from Columbia University and 220 other friends, co-workers and acquaintances.
And his wife.
Further down, the reason Facebook changed the policy:Lane complained to Overstock. Company spokesman Judd Bagley said this week that on Nov. 21, Overstock abandoned its Beacon feature until Facebook changes its practice so that users must volunteer if they want to participate.

Re:Clarification
The supreme court never ruled on that use. Congress demanded the documents, Cheney claimed executive privilege and Congress chose not to pursue the matter any further, as they didn't think at the time anything would be gained by doing so.
Are you sure we are talking about the samecase? So far, this has been the case of all of the Bush administration's use of Executive privilege. None have (yet) made it to the Supreme court. In previous cases where the Supreme Court has ruled (Clinton and Nixon being the two most recent), they have ruled that it covers only cases of national security, directly involving either military details or discussions with foreign nations.
Wow, Am I reading this Wrong? IT might be that Bush's cases have never made it to the supreme court but it appears that the answer is more then national security and military. Actually the first links shows the intent better. But this one isn't really lacking.Which, it should be noted, is exactly the claim made by Nixon, which the supreme court rejected in ordering him to turn over his tapes. From which, of course, someone had accidentally deleted a completely inconsequential 14 minutes.
Actually, the Supreme court said that private matters are not protected and that was why he had to give it up. there is some extensive discussion about it on the Washington post link above. Nixon couldn't claim executive privilege because it was about a private matter and criminal in nature. And after rereading it, I noticed that they forced two people to offer testimony and restricted 1 or two as noted by the redacted who did fall under the executive privilege. So it appears that the context of the discussions is what matters most. -
Cui bono
War is worth a lot of money, so just follow the money. Is it any wonder that the Oil and big business that got elected wanted to make more money? No-bid contracts with Halliburton, Cheney's ex-CEO spot, worth billions. Closed energy meetings with Cheney, not even disclosing who was attending the meetings.
That's not even getting a tin foil hat out, those are simple facts.
Now for the tin foil hat : Right now the US establishes its presence mostly via Saudi Arabia. Now that we'll have long term bases in Iraq and Afghanistan it gives us more places to project our influence. Why keep our power base located within just one country now that we have so many weapons sitting right next to Iran. It's obvious why we royally ignored all attempts at diplomacy http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/17/AR2006061700727.html - war is very profitable.
On top of that OPEC still uses US dollars. Iran is vocal about wanting to use the Euro. If we control a few of the OPEC nations and are the 800 pound gorilla with bases all over the middle east we just might stop a total collapse of the US Dollar. -

Re:Disregard carbon; pay attention to all else
Yeah, it's a pretty sad state of affairs.
With even Patrick Moore (the founder of Greenpeace) realising that nuclear power (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/14/AR2006041401209.html) is the way forward, so-called "environmentalists" need to get a clue. The nuclear waste argument is almost entirely moot thanks breeder reactors, as has already been pointed out.
There are more deaths in the coal industry per measure of power produced, than in the nuclear power industry (including mining, catastrophes, meltdowns).
The fact that some environmentalists actually attempt to hinder the obviously superior, and obviously more environmentally healthy option of nuclear power is a testament to their reactionary and brainless nature. -
Re:Call Me Paranoid
I'm sorry, what track record would that be?
For one, there is refusing demands for search data.
As we have seen in the past, with everything from Google Street View...
I don't agree with this, but the Google Street View is in general a continuing debate. I am speaking specifically of data that you submit to Google willingly. Not data captured by Google through your public exposure. Google does not break in to your home and take "Google Cribs View" panoramas of your home interior and publish them online.
...this will inevitably include information that people might have expected to remain private...
In the information age, perhaps people's expectations need to change? It needs to be realised what you really do in public is not local but global.
Google are a business like any other and, despite all the "do no evil" rhetoric, they will still do whatever they can get away with to make a profit for their shareholders, and they can still be compelled to disclose any information required by law (and laws can change).
While I don't think it is quite as cuthroat as you make it out to be, I generally agree. The only person that has your best interests in mind is you. So you should take precautions: don't allow truly private data online and if you do, encrypt it or accept the risk. When people start stealing that data, which Google does not do, then I'll break out the pitchforks and torches.

Re:How much is that in ...
With the aging equipment and copious amounts of private labor the cost is about $700,000/year for each soldier and support.
(based on spending requests), (200,000,000 total/year). The cost of the war in Iraq and Afganistan combined is 3,000,000,000/week (triple your estimate), with 80% of that being for Iraq.

In a Russian City, Clues to Putin's Abiding AppealToday's Washington Post has an interesting article which explains why the Russian people love Putin, or at least look the other way with respect to Putin's excesses.
As Bill Clinton would say: "It's the economy, stupid". From the article:The lean, balding 35-year-old, who has spent his adult life working on the line at a glass factory in the suburbs of this city, now sits at a laden table with his wife and 13-year-old son. Behind him is a brand-new television beside a matching CD player, also new. His Lada car, bought recently with a bank loan, is parked outside the family's second-story walk-up apartment.
"I feel much safer now," said Ignatiyev, whose family recently took its first vacation abroad, a package tour to a Turkish resort. "I have a good job, not a prestigious job, but a good living." In just the past two years, his salary has more than doubled, to $700 a month, reflecting his factory's growing sales. -
The Kremlin Plays Brutal ChessUnfortunately for Gary Kasparov, the Kremlin plays brutal chess.
According to a report recently issued by Reuters, the leading political candidate representing the liberal anti-Kremlin Yabloko party has been shot by an unknown assailant. The candidate is now in serious condition in a hospital. This attempted assassination caps a year-long effort, by the Kremlin, to rig the parliamentary election on December 2. Under orders from the Kremlin, banks have refused to accept donations from supporters for deposit in the accounts of opposition parties. Owners of assembly halls have canceled contracts allowing opposition politicians to stage rallies. The police have seized the newspapers of opposition parties in a draconian attempt to prevent them from spreading their message.
In early November, the election-monitoring arm of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) declined to send election observers to Russia to monitor the 2007 parliamentary election. This OSCE decision resulted from (1) the Kremlin's refusing to allow more than 70 OSCE observers to enter Russia and (2) the Kremlin's delaying the granting of visas to them. In 2003, the Kremlin had accepted 400 OSCE observers, but after the OSCE condemned the 2003 election for being unfair, many folks in the Kremlin vowed to stymie OSCE's efforts in future elections.

Re:Quite sensible
One can only hope that the Pakistanis were diligent enough to clone the same PALs system into the Reagan-fostered nuke technology they sold to Iran. It would be really scary if Iran didn't have access, didn't install, and didn't master the same level of advanced bicycle locking technology the United States seems to enjoy.

PEACEFUL???
What the hell are you smoking?
There are about million dead, e.g. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/10/AR2006101001442.html.
US of fucking A is responsible *directly* for 70'000 http://www.iraqbodycount.org/, and indirectly for most of the rest.
The are several million refugees (some to neighboring countries) http://www.unhcr.org/iraq.html.
Jesus Christ and Holy Maria - what the hell would you consider non-peaceful!?
BTW, there is no invitation. Even the puppet government has asked USA to leave. Google yourself. -

Your info was back in 2004. According to the

Washington Post, the current cost is $720 million a day or $500,000 per minute. So 5 minutes would pay for the $2.5mil that was cut. The entire budget of $10.5mil is gone in 21 minutes. -
Re:Idiocy like this...A key House committee and the Senate have endorsed O'Malley's proposal to increase the sales tax from 5 to 6 percent and to apply it to a number of services that are now exempt. But the chambers are interested in taxing different services. The Senate bill passed yesterday would apply the levy to computer services and video arcades. Landscaping had been included but was removed after a public outcry. The House Ways and Means Committee, meanwhile, approved a provision yesterday calling for the taxation of auto repairs and an array of other repair services. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/11/09/AR2007110901244_2.html?nav=rss_metro&sid=ST2007110902532 20%? Here's your polite bashing.
The scientist involved in this research said himself that Bush's ban on stem cell research set the field back four or five years.
Research is not a fluid. Barriers do not cause it to flow faster in a different direction. Research is gaseous -- it expands in all directions, and will get to any breakthrough faster if you do not put barriers in its way. -
Re:The science! We find this definition has a scientific and ethical clearity that can avoid a lot of the horrors of history that now (most of) humanity regrets based on what counts as a human worthy of protection.
And what "horrors of history" would those be? Frankenstein's Monster? Inhabitants of the island of Dr Moreau? Mind quoting a non-science-fiction example of your strawman? But here is what your enlightened leaders do to those that they *do* recognize as humans, based on your "definition" :Cluster bombing innocent civilians as collateral damage in a war waged over fake reasons and imaginary threats? Making laws to torture and imprison them without trials? No problem! http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/inatl/longterm/fogofwar/index/cdamage.htm
Proceeding to support *another* nuclear proliferating dictator while waging the above war, and assisting in trampling human and civil rights of others and trampling on their right to have a democracy? No problem! http://www.voanews.com/english/2007-11-21-voa1.cfm
Causing deaths of millions of babies by withholding medicines and food, and claiming that the "price(killing these babies) was worth it"! No problem with that either! Those were non-american babies and thus not "really" alive or really "human". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lK_QshS2EW8
Inciting a war in another uninvolved country and driving it to ruins and in hands of radical Islami c zealots, just to give a cold-war rival "its vietnam"... perfectly okay and ethical! http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/BRZ110A.html
Actually nuking millions of innocent civilians
... sure! Again non-americans and therefore not really "humans" or "alive". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_NagasakiBut God forbid that someone aborts an unborn fetus they are not ready for. God forbid that scientists do valuable research that can actually cure diseases and reduce suffering! *Then* the esteemed leaders become so very "ethical" and "religious".
You are both non-persuasive *and* stupid.
And you are a hypocrite!

Re:A true whistleblower
Indeed. This isn't the first time William Tobin has blown the whistle by any stretch of the imagination. Tobin, who was formerly the chief metallurgist at the FBI, also called into question the investigative practices of individuals involved in the FBI's investigation of TWA Flight 800 and has testified as to various fraudulent activities that took place within various FBI investigations. Apparently this test was the same test used to convict Lee Harvey Oswald, and guess who called it into question? Yup. William A. Tobin.
Curiouser and curiouser, no? -
Re:[OFFTOPIC] Re:A related and important question
For example, nothing the Bush regime has said about the motive for the invasion of Iraq stands up to any scruitiny, so we're left with nothing but speculation as to they whys and wherefores.
To take this further off topic, I will respectfully disagree with this. Certainly some of the pre-war claims have been disproved, but President Bush's political opponents try to force this into absolutes when the truth is a lot more complicated.
To be more specific, the Bush Administration made several claims to justify the invasion of Iraq, including:- Saddam was in violation of the UN disarmament mandate, including resolutions 687 and 1441. This was confirmed by the Duelfer report following the invasion where the ISG reported their findings of dozens of hidden and illegal weapons programs and infrastructure that the UN had no idea existed.
- Saddam was maintaining stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons. This was disproved following the invasion, as it appears that Saddam unilaterally destroyed his stockpiles following the first gulf war (the fact that he did this outside of the sights of the UN inspectors was itself another violation of his cease-fire mandate).
- Saddam was actively trying to develop nuclear weapons. This was also disproved following the invasion.
- Iraq sponsored and promoted international terrorist groups. This was also confirmed. Iraq was first placed on the State Department's list of State Sponsors of Terrorism in 1979, and they were known to carry out terrorist attacks through the IIS and directly support dozens of terrorist groups.
- Iraq supported al Qaeda. This has been disproved-ish . You can't disprove it outright, because there is clear evidence that both al Qaeda and Iraq reached out to each other to try to form a collaborative relationship, but there is no proof that such a collaborative relationship was ever established or that they ever really worked together.
- Iraq posed a direct threat to the United States. Personally, I would say that this has been confirmed. In 2002, intelligence agencies from around the world were warning us that Iraq was planning terrorist attacks against us. That's evidence of a pretty significant threat.
- A stable and free democratic Iraq will counteract the source of the hatred in that region that has led to attacks like 9/11. Maybe we will know if this has been confirmed or disproved in 30 years.

Korean Prejudice Against non-KoreansThe aforementioned article includes several inaccurate statements. Below are the facts.
1. According to a report by "The Economist", the Japanese government, by 2005, had apologized 17 times for the role of the Japanese in World War II. The Japanese government even gave a written apology to the Korean government.
2. According to a report by "The Washington Post", Tokyo paid $500 million of war reparations to Seoul in 1965.
3. According to a CNN report, a "Time" magazine report, and several other reports, Nazi symbols are popular in Korea. "A small photo of Adolf Hitler adorns the entrance to the Fifth Reich, an upscale watering hole in Seoul's Shinchon university district. A larger picture of the Führer hangs across from the bar, where waiters and waitresses with swastika arm badges mix drinks that have names like 'Adolf Hitler' and 'Dead'."
4. Koreans have viciously treated non-Koreans in South Korea. The Chinese immigrant community has succeeded in nearly every Asian country (including Japan). The exception is South Korea. The Chinese population in Korea declined from 50,000 to 10,000. "Many Chinese claim they were forced out by the Seoul authorities."
5. A reporter at "The Economist" wrote, "Koreans have always prided themselves on ethnic homogeneity, and feared and distrusted outsiders."
6. The U.S. State department has warned, "Citizenship [in Korea] is based on blood, not location of birth, and Koreans must show as proof their family genealogy. Thus, ethnic Chinese born and resident in Korea cannot obtain citizenship or become public servants."
7. "Purity" of blood is extremely important in Korean culture. "Traditional reverence for familial bloodlines [in Korea] and the social stigmas attached to adoptees as well as children who are disabled, mixed race or born out of wedlock limit local enthusiasm for the [adoption] program. Thus, international adoption continues to outpace domestic." "Because of societal values emphasizing the importance of bloodline, children were adopted domestically only by extended family or blood relatives."
Although a tiny percentage of Japanese citizens supports a revisionist history (as evidenced by the shocking memorial next to Yasukuni Shrine), the overwhelming majority of Japanese is aware of the correct history of World War II: specifically, the Japanese military initiated a war of aggression.
However, this unfortunate history is no justification, whatsoever, for the the racist and bigotted attitudes of the Koreans. Korean citizens who reside in Japan but who refuse Japanese citizenship should be treated as foreigners. These Korean "refuseniks" are loyal to either South Korea or North Korea. The Japanese government should fingerprint all Korean "refuseniks".

Re:What are the police really like? For many interrogations they do record in the US, but not for anything that falls under the broad blanket of "terrorism". If you are suspected of being a terrorist in the US, then they (likely) won't interrogate you in the US

They will send you elsewhere thus avoiding scrutiny. In these cases they do not allow video taping (certainly not for the suspects protection). In Abu Ghraib http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Ghraib_prisoner_abuse the army specifically ordered all pictures and videos to be turned in, never to be seen again (this was after the initial torture pictures got published of course).
They will even send you to places like Syria

Re:Way too late
Thanks for helping me prove my point, along with a new one: you wingnuts are infallibly wrong any time you open your mouths. If someone were to ask you if water was wet, you'd get the answer wrong.
Yeah, remember when the Chinese shot down one of the US satellites with the missile technology that Clinton gave them?
See, you're so damn stupid you misspell "Hughes Electronics" as "Clinton". But on my first point: remember when Bush apologized to that same batch of communists when they kept our air crew hostage after a mid air crash clearly caused by their pilot?
Remember the Carnivore database that Gore was creating until the Republicans prevented it?
It wasn't a database dipshit, it was a packet sniffing program to be set up on a specific LAN. That the FBI would have used when they obtained a warrant. Yet in the minds of you wingnuts, a limited software program to be used under a warrant is somehow far worse than a vast program to tap communications with no warrant. Because you are that damn stupid.
The world "loves the dems" because they make sure the whole world can fuck the US in the ass any time it wants.
Al Queda determined to attack the U.S., maybe using planes. My Pet Goat. Dubai Ports. Spank spank nazi beyach.
We got the current moron because the US was so sick of the Clintons they wouldn't give Gore a chance.
You mean Al Gore, who won the popular election by 500,000 votes? That would have won Florida if a statewide recount had been completed?
It will ALMOST be worth it to watch you fuckers scratching your heads in wonder when Hillary, using the precedence of her predecessor, is goose-stepping and frog-marching everyone around.
Her aborted attempt to pass health care aside, you guys should love Hillary. A tool for lobbyists, a former Republican, on the board of Wal-Mart for 6 years, a military hawk, and her law firm worked for big business. And yet you hate her guts, because she has a D after her name instead of an R. Because you are that damn stupid. -
I'll show some interest in nuclear power when...
Every new house in the Southwest is required to use solar power. I live in the Northeast, and I'm pricing out a system for my house. For about $30K, I can take care of 90% of my residential electric needs. This would add about 15% to the price of an average new home in the Southwest, which is not an undue burden on those who can already afford to buy a new house.
I'll consider nuclear power when every new car and truck in the US is required to get at least 40mpg. I already own one, so it's not impossible or unproven technology. It cost me $20k, so the technology is not especially expensive.
I'll give nuclear a chance when you can't buy an incandescent light bulb. I swapped out all mine for fluorescent last year.
We already have technology and resources in place to reduce our power consumption incrementally, and we're not doing it. I don't see the need to make massive investments in nuclear when we're not taking these simple steps.
I would like to see us make the same investment in solar that Germany is making. The article makes it clear that Germany would not be investing so massively in solar power if they did not have such a strong anti-nuclear movement.

Re:Data recovery from SSDs?
All of the companies that make military grade drives have some secure erase feature. Here is the description from the Adtron website. Most even have some way to physically destroy the circuitry as well, leaving the device totally unusable (and in some cases unrecognizable). I am not sure that they sell the "destruct" feature to the general public, but most have it. It became very popular after the EP-3 incident.

Russian Agent in Our MistThere are a large number of bloggers who actually promote the Kremlin. Apparently, we have one such blogger in our midst at Slashdot.
This pro-Kremlin blogger belittles the human-rights groups in Russia. Then, he claims that the Kremlin is a really nice guy, not a beast.
Well, read the story of Larissa Arap, a human-rights activist. In 2007, the Kremlin imprisoned her in a psychiatric institution even though she was mentally competent. Then, some Kremlin thugs repeatedly beat her and injected hallucinogenic drugs into her. She endured this hell for 6 weeks. The Kremlin tried to kill her for her publishing critical comments about the state of Russian psychiatric wards.
This little fucking pro-Kremlin blogger says that the Kremlin is a nice guy.
I think not. The Kremlin is a Russian beast -- a total fucking animal.
We Westerners will not shut up about the shit that the Kremlin is doing to Chechens, Georgians, and -- yes -- even Russians.
We want the whole world to know about Larissa Arap. You little Kremlin fuckers hurt her for 6 weeks. Now, we will "hurt" the Kremlin by informing the whole world about Russian antics. Thank Buddha for an organization like "The Washington Post".

Re:bleh
Yes, we have so many roadblocks in place to stop new nuclear power plants from becoming a reality like a $500 million dollar insurance subsidy to anyone willing to build new plants with $250 Million per year for five years after, and credits for nuclear energy production...
I hope someone does something to stop them and their overhyped fears of nuclear materials, so we can start making new nuclear weapons. Everybody knows we have solved any technical issues with dangerous nuclear power production! -
Re:bleh
"And what makes it even more ironic is that the activists are still at it today."
Well, that may be changing: here is one of the founders of Greenpeace, Patrick Moore, who changed his views on the subject. Interesting read. And, according to him, there are more changing their opinions:"British atmospheric scientist James Lovelock, father of the Gaia theory, believes that nuclear energy is the only way to avoid catastrophic climate change. Stewart Brand, founder of the "Whole Earth Catalog," says the environmental movement must embrace nuclear energy to wean ourselves from fossil fuels. On occasion, such opinions have been met with excommunication from the anti-nuclear priesthood: The late British Bishop Hugh Montefiore, founder and director of Friends of the Earth, was forced to resign from the group's board after he wrote a pro-nuclear article in a church newsletter."
-
Re:I happen to quite agree with TFA:
More importantly one large coal burner with 1/10th the capacity of any of the generators at TMI gives off significantly more radioactivity to the environment every year then the single worst accident in US history. Even the cofounder of Greenpeace has admitted he was wrong about nuclear power. Plus today we have designs that are literally many of orders of magnitude more safe then even the very safe LWR.

Re:I'm afraid they're too lateJust have some small additions: first, the difference between an email address suffix and an orginization. One organization could use many suffixes. One email suffix could be used by many people in a variety of locations (Gmail, anyone?). When this was first reported in March / April:
Susan Ralston, formerly Karl Rove's assistant at the White House, appears to have used at least four outside email accounts: a 'gwb' domain account, a 'georgewbush.com' account, and an 'rnchq.org' account -- all run by the RNC -- plus an AOL account.
One organization using a lot of @xyz.com's.
She once emailed two associates of lobbyist Jack Abramoff, 'I now have an RNC blackberry which you can use to e-mail me at any time. No security issues like my WH email.' So it's not as though they didn't know they were circumnavigating the law concerning the security of whitehouse.gov emails. The link above says:Here's Bob Franken discussing the story on CNN yesterday: "It's about the Presidential Records Act, which requires the preservation of all official records of and about the president. . . .
"There are also messages to and from lobbyist Jack Abramoff, now in prison. At one point, according to investigators, after an e-mail was apparently sent by accident to the White House account of an assistant to Karl Rove, Abramoff fired another one saying, 'Damn it, it was not supposed to go in the White House system.' . . .
"Neither administration aides nor Republican Party officials would agree to be interviewed on camera after repeated requests from CNN.
So, what if it's shown that any government investigation was obstructed by someone deleting these emails...?Whoever corruptly
...obstructs, or impedes or endeavors to influence, obstruct, or impede the due and proper administration of the law under which any pending proceeding is being had before any department or agency of the United States, or the due and proper exercise of the power of inquiry under which any inquiry or investigation is being had by either House, or any committee of either House or any joint committee of the Congress--
Shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 5 years or, if the offense involves international or domestic terrorism (as defined in section 2331), imprisoned not more than 8 years, or both.
US Code , Title 18, Section 1505. That's US Law. According to Cornell University Law School. But what do they know?
If you want to see a PDF of one such email exchange, click here. Sue Ralston has "please send all replies to ...@georgewbush.com" as her sig line, fer flip's sake. Page 2 is where Jack Abramoff himself says "Dammit. It was sent to Susan on her rnc pager and was not supposed to go into the WH system."

Mass resident here
I'm a Massachusetts residence who's been observing the whole gambling thing over the past six months. I don't know exactly why Deval wants to criminalize online gambling, but I can give you some background into the whole debate.
First of all, why does the state want to legalize gambling in the first place? You guessed it: money. The state is facing severe budget shortfalls in pretty much all areas, but especially the transportation infrastructure (and for you non-Mass Romney supporters out there: remember this when Romney brags about his economic accomplishments. He didn't to shit except turn Massachusetts into the butt of his jokes). Some of the state's biggest cities (Boston, Springfield, Lawrence, Lowell, etc) have violent crime problems and these cities are looking for money to fund the police and outreach programs.
The state is trying very hard to develop new revenue streams by encouraging investment in biotech and green energy. But the problem with trying to bring those industries into Massachusetts is that land/rents in the eastern part of the state (with access to MIT, Harvard, Northeastern, etc) is very expensive. Costs in the western part of the state is significantly cheaper, but you don't have the highly-educated workforce like you do in the eastern part of the space. Also, these initiatives are long-term fixes, and we need money now.
So some Mass residents have been gazing longingly at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun in Connecticut (especially since lots of Mass residents spend money there) and have decided "we want some of that!" Hence the push to legalize gambling.
Of course the push toward casino gambling has created opposition with their concerns. Most of the concerns center around the potential for increased crime - some of the proposed locations (including Springfield) are dealing with crime problems and are worried that the casinos may create more crime, but since the state will be taking most of the money, the city/town will have to deal with the crime levels on their own. This isn't an unreasonable concern - western Massachusetts used to have homeless and public assistance centers all over the region, but they were consolidated by Romney into Springfield. Since western Mass doesn't have an extensive public transporation infrastructure, people on public assistance (and in too many cases, their deadbeat/criminal children/SO/spouses, etc) came to live in Springfield without a corresponding increase in the LEO/outreach budget which help cause our crime levels to spike.
Patrick (or his advisers/aides) spent some time meeting with people on both sides of the issues and researching the expected benefits and disadvantages to weigh the tradeoffs. Patrick finally recommended legalizing gambling at three casinos (eastern Mass, western Mass, and the Cape) after deciding that those three casinos could be prove beneficial, and create manageable problems.
That's where we are. So why the harsh penalties for online gambling? Maybe he is corrupt, but having seen how he kept his composure in response to a brutal campaign waged by his gubernatorial opponent last year makes me doubt that. My guess would be that it's a gift to casino opponents who are worried that unchecked gambling in the state might lead to increased problems in already high crime areas.
I can't say I'm all that happy that these penalties are in the bill, but given the various problems the state is

Re:Way too late
Meh! The Clinton administration did plenty of shredding too. Not to mention how he let OBL go when he could have nabbed him.
Googled August 20, 1998
Saying "there will be no sanctuary for terrorists," Clinton pounded the bejesus out of al Qaeda locations. Note: Iraq was not on the list. Note: Taliban released a report confirming that OBL wasn't killed, despite our efforts.
So what was the response to this attempt to nab him?
Glad you asked. But Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), one of Clinton's severest critics earlier in the week, said, "There's an obvious issue that will be raised internationally as to whether there is any diversionary motivation."
Sen. John D. Ashcroft (R-Mo.), a possible presidential candidate in 2000, noted "there is a cloud over this presidency."
And Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.), who called on Clinton to resign after his speech Monday, said: "The president has been consumed with matters regarding his personal life. It raises questions about whether or not he had the time to devote to this issue, or give the kind of judgment that needed to be given to this issue to call for military action."
Not some bystanders. Not some pundits. Senators. Saying that maybe OBL was "diversionary motivation". Saying that trying to nab him put "a cloud" over the presidency. Brushing it off as "this issue." You might have noticed which side of the political divide they're all on.
You know: you can listen to as much spin and lies and distortion as you like, but it's not going to alter the past no matter how much you repeat it. You don't redefine the history that's already written, and viewable with just the easiest of Google searches, by repeating a lie. You can watch all the dramatic made-for-TV pieces you like that try to rewrite history to your liking ...but it's nowt next to the established timeline. To fact. To how things really happened, and were reported as such AT THE TIME.
Either live in reality, or keep your delusions to yourself.
Cheers.
