windizupdates
Oh.. Would you/someone mind posting how you get updates from WindozeUpdates using Firefox?
WindizUpdate, a 3rd party update site.
It used to work with Windows XP and Firefox 1.5
Now that both peice of software have moved on (latest Windows is now 7, and latest Firefox is 3.5) I suppose it's not maintained anymore.
But it used to be an alternative do MicrosoftUpdates + IE. -
Re:Wait, does this thing browse the internet still
Actually, Windiz Update hasn't had a new update added to it since November 2007, and probably never will again.
-
Re:Can you bypass using WGA at all?
easy. Using Firefox go to http://windizupdate.com/ . No IE, no WGA, no bad updates. It's the only way to update.
-
Re:Can you bypass using WGA at all?
If you want to run windows update without IE:
I suppose you could use it to update without installing WGA.
-
Re:What astonishes me...
Who needs windows update?
http://www.windizupdate.com/ is your best friend. Oh yeah, there's one browser it doesn't support. Care to guess which one?
I'll give you a hint: its icon has a blue "e" in it.

Re:Torrent
Windiz Updates work nicely, and in Firefox. http://windizupdate.com/ Not an invested party, but it is damn nice.
-
Re:Glad I disabled auto-updates
WindizUpdate does not have any updates of any kind released after November 2007, so it's more of a security risk than Windows Update.
-
Re:Honestly, these problems are solveable
In response, I direct you to http://windizupdate.com/era.php. Which states quite categorically that WindizUpdate is now completely unsupported and will not receive updates to Windows past the abandonment in November last year, which means if you rely on it for updating Windows then updates will never actually come down.
-
Re:Honestly, these problems are solveableWindows Update - Using Genuine Linux Distro "Ubuntu". Result? No licensing restrictions, no DRM, no repeated system restarts, no service packs to fix the previous service pack, that fixed the previous service pack, that fixed months old critical bugs. While I might pick a nit with the choice of Ubuntu, the philosophy is spot-on. For those having to use Windows once in a while, there's always http://windizupdate.com/ .

WindizUpdate...From the site:
Why use WindizUpdate?
Not only will it keep you up to date with the latest updates from Microsoft, it will also keep software and drivers from other vendors updated. However, that functionality is currently missing.
Good reasons to use WindizUpdate
* No personally identifiable information is collected from your computer.
* No more unwanted spyware -- Microsoft Internet Explorer can finally be removed from your computer (if that were possible).
* It lists just the updates you need. If an update has been superceded by a newer one, it will not ask you to install the older one.
* Using enhanced data from MBSA, WindizUpdate will find more security patches needed for your O/S than the "other" website.
* If there is a security issue with a component that is not yet installed, it will not ask you to update it. For example, if you have not installed hyperterminal, it will not update it.
* It is not restricted to just Microsoft products. Software from other vendors can also be updated.
* Upgrading to the latest version of Internet Explorer is not considered a Critical Update!
* Works on Windows versions no longer supported by Microsoft -- Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95
* Our plugin is not an ActiveX control.
* Integrated download manager with error detection -- you can cancel downloads at any time, and the next time you wish to install the cancelled update, it will continue from where it left off. Only corrupted sections of the file are redownloaded.
If you are still not convinced that WindizUpdate is the site for you, please check out our page titled "do we need to say any more?"
Disadvantages
* There is a delay from when new updates are released from Microsoft to when they appear on this site.
* If you're using Internet Explorer, you will need to use Microsoft's Windows Update site for updates -- this site will be of no use to you.
* You'll need to upgrade your browser if you're using MSIE 4.xx -- This site won't work, neither will Microsoft's. http://windizupdate.com/
The "do we need to say any more?" link is: http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/whywelovems.php ;)
Sure, it's not an AIO CD, but it's a great alternative to Windows Update. -
Re:MSDN LibraryIf it wasn't required to visit windowsupdate.com, it would be the nail in IE's coffin. you should check out http://windizupdate.com/

Re:I've run into this and the fix isn't hard.Go to http://windizupdate.com/ with a supported (non-IE) browser.
What does it do? I have NoScript, and there's no way I'm turning it on for a site that doesn't explain itself.
-
Re:I've run into this and the fix isn't hard.
I ran into this a couple of weeks ago. When the attempt to use update.microsoft.com fails, the "troubleshooter" will direct you to a Knowledge Base article [microsoft.com] that advises you to do the following:
Go to http://windizupdate.com/ with a supported (non-IE) browser.
Once that is done, you'll never have to use Microsoft Update again.
That's something you can tell your grandmother over the phone.

Windows Update alternative
I've always used Windiz Update as an alternative to Windows Update.
-
Re:Manual updates at risk?
There's always Windiz Update.
-
Re:Disable popups
You don't need the windows update site. Use windzupdate
http://windizupdate.com/ -
alternative
..is http://www.windizupdate.com/ - works on Firefox, too. Allows online updating and patching without WGA. Of course, you've got to trust Windizupdate I guess...
-
So? Don't use Windows Update.
Use Windiz Update!

Re:A la Bash.org
From http://www.windizupdate.com/
Not only will it keep you up to date with the latest updates from Microsoft, it will also keep software and drivers from other vendors updated. However, that functionality is currently missing.
Er...so it will, but it won't...Why not just say "Not only will it keep you up to date with the latest updates from Microsoft" then?

Re:Hold on just a second there chief.
windizupdate comes close.
-
Re:rc1 hosed me
http://windizupdate.com/ should sort you out. Use the fox, install the plugin and accept the data request. Alternatively, download Autopatcher and apply at your leisure.

Re:WGA...you must install WGA after upgrading to SP2 in order to get continued (non-critical) Windows updates
-
Your Wrong, kind of.
windiz update will let you update versions of windows that Microsoft thinks is not registered correctly.
-
Re:will it cause problems?
whilst this is no doubt a bit of a "d'oh" moment for MS I doubt it will be a serious problem for anyone. * For this to have any affect on you you need to have SP1 but have the latest update of security for IE 6, surely if anyone updated regularly and applied security updates they'd be using SP2 anyway...
Well, count me as "not anyone". I still run Win2000 on two machines, and my one XP box is still SP1 because I refuse to install WGA. On the other hand, this now prevents me from using Windows Update as well so you could say it doesn't affect me, but I can still update through WindizUpdate though I'm not sure if the broken patch made it there or not.
Point being...there are still people who haven't gone to SP2 or even XP yet and don't plan to, but they still install updates. They might be a small minority percentage-wise, but that doesn't mean there's not lots of them out there.
-
I'd like to but WGA won't let me.
Microsoft denies patches to any system it deems "non-authentic". Now the US government is urging, strongly, everyone to patch their systems. This leaves your typical patriotic "pirate" US individual in a bit of a pickle. Skip the patch and "Let the terrorists win" or fess up, pay up and "Think of the children."
That said, it sounds like a new Microsoft slogan:
"Unpatched Windows systems are hurting the war on terror; buy your legitimate license today."
Then again there is always http://windizupdate.com/ -
Re:Who are the developers
WGA is a little harder, but it's day will come.
Lemme get you a time warp.

Please send beer. Thank you. -
Re:So Illegal Copies Break The Law (Again)?
Or just use windizupdate.com if you use firefox. Nice way to admit to the world that you're using a pirated copy though, bud.

Updates are necessary, Windows Update is not
I can't remember the last time I used Windows Update. Automatic Updates does most of what I used WU for, even more easily. If I want other updates, Windiz Update is very similar, but works in non-IE browsers.
