It's amazing. In the same slahdot main page, we can see a review of Stanislav Lem's Solaris (well, the film). Ok, the Wired article explains why so few Americans do not know this author (he writes in Polish, and most novels are not translated or only poorly). However, also non-Amreicans read Slashdot, and being German, I can only say: After reading Lem, you stop reading Asimov, and others (just the Hitchhiker will still be considered good SciFi). And, Lem's books are translated into German where he sells millions. The only hope for the Americans is that the film Solaris will be a blockbuster -- and trigger the editors to newly traslate all other Lem books as well.

i dunno if any of you old skool wired readers remember this article about paradise island home of some of the world's most famous satellite and cable hackers. a constant cat and mouse game between the hackers and satellite and cable box developers/content distributors. and the interesting thing is that both sides seem to enjoy the battle of wits.

I'm a major webaholic. Recipes, chip pinouts, code snippets, news, weather, TV listings, Slashdot, Drudge Report, etc... I want one with the Transmeta Astro chip powered by new fuel cells so I can extend the battery life to a full 8 hours. Now if somebody can just get it to run seventeen hours and charge in seven! Sitting chained to my desk really puts a cramp on my lifestyle. Can't cook, can't go to the bathroom, never see much of outside except out my window, let alone gardening, house cleaning, or any other non-computer activities. Hmmm, maybe this is exactly what I DON'T NEED!

The idea behind mesh networks is that after the mesh density reaches a critical level, they can start "floating" and stop relying on wire networks for medium and long distance connections. Wired (sic!) has an article about the "wireless pond" analogy. I'm thinking about a function of average link length, peak user count, average connection distance, desired bandwidth per user and link bandwidth -- and I have my doubts that a free floating wireless lan can really challenge wired networks for long distance communication, even under the assumption of near perfect routing and non-malicious users. But still, that is the idea.

As many people have commented the space station has been a huge black hole of money.

For each win we've had there we've suffered many setbacks.

Very little hard science has been done due to construction delays and retrofitting many of the parts.

Even the science they have done hasn't been much.

Russia may be a joke about contributing, but they have the right idea on raising money. Send people who can afford to millions up there to fund further development.

Well, items like ReplayTV and Tivo aside (which obviously monitor viewing habits and report them back to the parent company for various reasons), for at least a few years set-top digital cable boxes collect viewing patterns, channels watched, time spent, etc. and are capable of transmitting this information back to the cable provider. I don't know how wide-spread it is in practice among providers, however, the tech is there.

I grant you though, for your low-end TV with a cable connection straight from the cable box on the outside of the house, it's not likely a cable company will put something in place to monitor viewing habits.

I know Wired isn't running this little Anti-Reality script/proggie/whatever the hell it's supposed to be, but I think they might be doing something similar since they redesigned the layout of their site. I have Tweak-XP, which makes use of an ad blocker. I keep updating my list of blocked sites regularly (pretty much anytime I notice an ad getting through). Some sites (like MSNBC and, to some extent, Wired) have taken to hosting some of their regular graphics on ad servers. The result is that you won't get access to their pictures unless you don't block their ads. Of course, this makes for a rather unusual view for MSNBC, as nearly the entire page has little "Blocked By Tweak-XP" graphics.

The interesting thing that I noticed is that since the layout change, if I surfed to Wired with the server for their ads blocked it would redirect me to their "Less Cool-Looking" page. Same news, just all the swank graphics gone with a message about how my browser doesn't support basic web standards. I'm wondering if Wired isn't running some sort of similar deal to what this story is talking about. You know, if you're blocking their ads then they send you to their much more lame page instead of getting the good one. You still get the news, it just doesn't look as pretty. I realize this could just be a side effect of something else they were doing with the layout change, but it still seems curious.

If you're wondering why the Brown Daily Herald (student paper of Brown Univ.) got the scoop on the first Feiss interview, the reason is that someone on its staff was apparently an ex-classmate of hers. She has avoided the media, by her own choice and at Apple's request (they are trying to downplay the pot thing) but she figured that a college newspaper would be sufficiently "under the radar."

John Weglian, chief of the special units division of the prosecutor's office, offers no apologies for Buckeye's unusually harsh treatment of the uncappers. The cable operators claim a loss of $11,000 for each of the 23 offenders and absurdity at best as the operators had the power to kill service at anytime, if indeed such losses were occuring. The uncpping was detected and the ISP could have terminated the contract with the individuals in question and fined them the cost of the modified equipment.

Now why is this a bother to Orwell and the authors of the US Constitution? Because it is a great step towards the end of free publishing in the US and towards the thought control of 1984. Violating a "service contract" with a monopoly ISP has been equated with serious law breaking. The same service contract includes prohibitions on running "servers" or electronic publications. Prohibiting electronic publications on a monopoly service ammounts to denial of first amendment rights to free speach. The internet is a public place, built largely from public networks on public land and supported by monopoly structures. The implication is that US citizens in the future will be felons if they attempt to express themselves in the electronic commons by runing their own news servers, email, or web servers.

Some people can't stand any competition, but the Founding Fathers knew that that's what a free press is all about. These services are against the wishes of their monopoly ISP wich also happens to be the monopoly telco or carrier of CableTV and all other significant electronic publications in the area. From the publisher's perspective, this is a nice step towards criminalizing competing with them. Not being able to run a free press is something the Founding Fathers would not find funny at all. The first amendment to the constitution puts free speach and press in the same class as religion and free assembly - inviolate. They also debated extensivly on the evils of exclusive franchise that copyright grants and how to balance that with the good that it can do to promote the useful arts - 14 years only, thank you. They could never have imagined a world of only one large press organization, AP, five music publishers, three broadcast networks and the technological steps those entrenched intersts would take to preserve and extend their power.

Orwell precicted such control through technology and it's ultimate results. These "untaper" federal cases combined with Paladium, are a great step towards 1984. Paladium, with its concept of "trusted computing" will assure that personal computers will spy on their owners, who can only use them to recieve official propaganda. Orwell saw it comming.

The stage has been well set by the large publishers and you are discredited. They have issued a long string of kiddie porn arrests and news storries about the demise of music publishers. These storries have convinced the public that the free internet is responsible for the demise of popular music and an increase in child molestation. "Hackers" have been equated with child molesters, warez losers and other "pirates" and parisites. this wired story does a good job of demolishing the connection between child molestation and the internet, but the readership of Wired is nothing compared to MSNBC/Time-Warner/AOL/McDonalds/AP/Conglomoram/GE. Your neighbors may not pitty you when the FBI coyly knocks on your door. "Why esle would anyone want to have all that bandwith or run a server?" a clueless populance will ask. You have been painted as some kind of pervert that treatens the great public circus, home, harth and the whole "entertainment ifrastruture" without which the US economy would obviously colapse.

I invite one and all to see exactly what I want to do with my internet connection. It's simple, I want to share my life with relatives that live in different states and my interests with anyone who cares. There's nothing Earth shattering here, not even bad music.

On December 1st, my modest site will go black when my contract with Cox Cable expires. The nose has tightened slowly, every six months brought some new loss of service and increase in costs, and it is now intollerable. I'm not willing to pay $75/month to simply surf the great corporate billboard nor am I willing to give money to a company with the same contract terms and philosophy as Buckeye.

Don't worry, I'll keep posting here on Slashdot. Now you know who twitter is.

The FCC did something similar in 1997 to see "whether this is pie in the sky or part of the 21st-century reality."
I haven't read yet about any conclusions drawn from that experiment though.

From the sound of this article, the FCC chair back then was hesitant to give something away for free that would raise billions for him in sales, but did so to see if it would have a positive impact on the eceonomy. If their weren't great results (documentable), these senators have their work cut out for them.

Security Office is admitting to criminal activity?

Not necesarily. They never said they "hacked" it. Read this article at Wired yesterday. Apparently there was a public FTP server at MS that MS employees were using to store sensitive files, because they weren't aware that it was public.

The funny thing is that MS was notified, took the server down, cleaned it, put it back up, and the same employees started doing it again.

If the data is in a public server, then it's not "hacking".

Its because of reasons like this and this and this that I don't want any sort of profit oriented organization or government collecting information about my lifestyle.

Anyhow, i like the rarticle until it got into the genetic stuff. Ah well.

the MoneyMaker Plus is small enough to be carried on a bicycle, simple enough that it can be installed by the farmer and repaired without any tools, and powerful enough that it can irrigate 1½ acres a day.

The thing will run on 3 triple A batteries.

So in 5 years we will see that (if) the Simputer is a success in getting these people online (which is so much more inmportant than making sure they can eat) - it wont really matter all that much because they will all be sick by the billions of AAA betteries that litter their water supplies, farming fields, streams etc...

I just dont think that getting poor people online is really that important. I mean the article says that a farmer can use the device to check the latest prices on cotton, allowing him to strike a better deal on selling his crops. I just dont really see this happening. I really see his cotton fields being worthless after some time due to all the battery acid leaked into the ground.

Do you really believe that the free market would have done better than the FCC has? If there were no FCC, there would be no radio astronomy. Your TV signal would get interference from the cell-phone bearing people walking down the sidewalk.

The Iridium satellites' frequency band was closely examined and approved by the FCC. When they launched however, it was found that they were broadcasting in a sideband well outside of that permitted band, rendering radio telescopes useless (like shining a flashlight down an optical telescope) so the FCC decreed that the Iridium transmitters had to be turned off as they passed over certain geographical regions.

Tell me how the free market would have solved that one. Ruled in favor of science or dollars? Free market favors the majority when a conflict arises. The government also keeps the needs of the minority in mind.
