...grade. An XP "downgrade" can only be purchased with a Business or Ultimate version of Vista. So if a customer is looking at a configure-to-order laptop such as with Dell or Lenovo, then in many cases customers have to upgrade their OS from Home Basic or Home Premium in order to get the XP downgrade option.
Is this charging more for XP...in many people's minds, yes. But legally (Full disclosure: IANAL), they are paying for the Vista upgrade, not for the XP downgrade.
Everything in an Apple (aside from the OS/software) is basically the same as what's in any windows PC. In fact, in some cases, Apple uses older/inferior components. The SSD in their Air laptop is a generation older than the SSDs in the Thinkpad X300.
It seems pretty clear that they are charging a premium for the CTO service, and not really charging more for the parts. The factory install is what you're paying for.
You're right that there's "F"ear...with good reason...about Vista. But there's no "D"oubt or "U"ncertainty that Vista is the biggest POS OS M$ has forced on us since Windows ME.
Your experience seems to be an outlier compared to most of the quality comments I've read about Lenovo Thinkpads vs. IBM Thinkpads. As I understand it, the same engineers who designed Thinkpads for IBM now work for Lenovo. Thinkpads are built in the same factories as they were when IBM owned the brand. Brand management is the same group who used to work for IBM. Basically, the only thing that's changed is the ID badges of the people who design, manage & build Thinkpads.
I have a T60p that I love, but will most likely be upgrading to one of the new Intel Montevina based Thinkpad "W" (workstation) models being reported by Gizmodo.
...hides fingerprints, wear & tear. But, if you want to mod the look of a ThinkPad, it also makes the perfect canvas. Just Skinit. Even Apple has a black laptop.
But this won't really make any difference. What really has to occur, to make real change, is a house cleaning of all branches. On one of the cable channels last night, they interviewed John McCain (or McCain.gov) and he talked about all the corruption, abuse and waste in government. McCain has been campaigning against waste his entire career. He specifically mentioned 'earmarks'. Earmarks (designate) funds it appropriates (revenue) to be spent on specific named projects. They're attached to spending bills and they are the favorite tactic of pork purveyors. They are used as currency in the House. Committee chairs and Bill sponsor allow them to be attached in return for support. So if Joe Rep wants $1M spent on a new study of newts in his home state, he gets the okay from a sponsor whose Bill has several billion in funds, and attaches his earmark carving out a small slice of the pie for himself.
I didn't intend for this to be a campaign ad...but in '08, I intend to support McCain for president. If you think what I've discribed above is complete BS, you should too. Go to the sites I've linked and learn about the man. His ideas and priorities are just what we need in the executive office.
And unless I'm mistaken, Lenovo was vetted by the US Government when they bought Thinkpad from IBM.
Reported in USA Today March 2005.
I'm more worried about the Bush administration spying on me, than Lenovo spying on our government.
Well, it's $32 more, but the delta we're typially used to (AMDvsIntel) is negative...AMD being considerably less. So being $32 more isn't really the issue. If you expect the AMD to be $100 less, it's really overpriced by $132.
AMD usually out performs Intel in game tests...which is the only reason to own one of these bleeding edge processors, right? It was interesting how much cooler the FX-60 ran compared to intel's 955 Extreme Edition. 15C less is huge. Cooler case, less power required for fans...so quiter too. AMD has always been the better value too, but in this case it's MORE than the intel. AMD should do it's best to avoid this becoming a trend.
I'm certain games have contributed to my degrading eyesight, weight gain, back problems, strained my bladder (at times) and reduced my sperm count...possibly an intentional design feature of the games.
No doubt 1000 is a big number, statistcally speaking. But with a self-selecting sample, and the obvious skew created by North America, you can hardly call this a Worldwide representation. It would be more accurate to refer to the survey as a "Reader's (Visitors) Survey"...like the PC magazines do when they publish survey results.
Systems Group is the Server and Storage productions organization, not the Microprocessor Group that develops and manufactures the Apple processors.
IBM uses the G5 processors in some of their servers, but chip sales are not included in the Systems Group numbers. All Microelectronics are part of Technology.
The original C&C by Westwood had an AWESOME story line...with Michael Biehn, James Earl Jones & Kari Wuhrer in some of the title roles.
...harvested all the Tiberium on my server :-(
Didn't even know they were still around.

They probably have a life.
And it's called World of Warcraft...so there's no time to snoop. This story is a cut and paste job from Twitter's journal, made within two hours of the twitter post. CWMike must be another Twitter sock puppet and this story is just more hysterical FUD about Vista.

Idiot...RTFA.
"Lenovo plans on officially unveiling the X300 on Feb. 26."
Idiot.
.76", the X300 is .92".
The Air is
You can't compare the skinny part of the Air...it means nothing. It was a nice design illusion by Apple, but it cost them functionality.

Stan's dad, "I'm not an R-tard." LOL
...the founding fathers intended.

You get less then $100 back for M$ for the pre-load of Windows. The cost ot the OEM is very small.

Stats...50% of the time they are boogus, 50% of the time the are made up.
That's how we used to find resouces when none of them were virtual.
I'm certain games have contributed to my degrading eyesight, weight gain, back problems, strained my bladder (at times) and reduced my sperm count...possibly an intentional design feature of the games.
...then we'll have something to debate.

Wow! A whopping 1984 respondents worldwide, of which the US& Canada make up about 50%. Seems a bit skewed to me.
