Re:More interested in a 1080p for cheap
Instead of this pointless arms race of resolution that no one actually supports, how about nice, high-quality, reliable 1080p HDTVs at a price point of $100US or less?
Never happen. There are minimums. In particular, there's a minimum amount of effort required to assemble an LCD TV. Once the yields on the panels themselves are high enough, and the factory is paid for (and some of them are paid for by now), that's the controlling factor. Some of the steps are still too finicky for robots so humans perform them, which induces a price floor a good deal higher than just the cost of materials + cost of energy to refine and assemble them. Still, you can get a $120 24" 1080p screen. It's sold as "factory reconditioned", which usually means "we want it outta the warehouse and we don't want to bother with the original warranty term, so this is how we unload them." Limit 10.
Once you hit the very bottom of the margins, manufacturers stop making things in favor of something with higher margins.

Re:Why bother with smart TV's
http://www.woot.com/plus/tvs-u...
Woot is currently (today only likely) selling 40"+ TVs for low prices. They even have smart TVs. If you aren't looking for 4k or 3D, you don't need to really buy anything expensive. I would suggest with any flat panel TV though that you get some kind of surround sound, or even a speaker bar, as due to the size constraints, the speakers inside modern TVs are awful.

Re:What's Out There For Poor Vision?
All good suggestions.
I wear multifocus contact lenses, they are really just two lenses of different power, the left for up close, the right for distance. It sounds odd, but it works well.
I also have a pair of "computer glasses" that I use occasionaly. I bought Gunnar's on sale from woot... The tint helps reduce glare and the slight magnification does reduce eyestrain (for me anyway... YMMV)
I would love to get a big 30+" 4k display for my everyday use, but budgets...

Re:Love the Shirt!
It was one of the first shirts sold on shirt.woot and the design was by Cory Doctorow. They usually sell popular designs for a while, unlike their usual deal-a-day model, but I think that one is long gone. Maybe with it in the news, they'll bring it back...

Read the guy's blog
http://arijitvsdelta.blogspot.co.uk/
He mentions on there that the shirt was designed by Cory Doctrow, and can be acquired here:

Re:No Mic, No Camera, No Problem
Fair enough; however, in reading the articles and an admittedly brief Google search, I didn't find a list of the technical specs, such as external SD card, etc.
As a result, I could only reply to what I read in the summary which specifically called out the lack of a microphone and camera.
I have an iPad 2 and a Viewsonic G-Tablet. I use the iPad for stupid little games, I use the G-Tab for real work. Both have their place; however, if I hadn't won the iPad I wouldn't have it. The price point is far too high, I was able to get the G-Tab off of Woot!.
I do appreciate Amazon's position in trying to address the price point, I mean as sales has shown, only Apple can demand an Apple price.
Oh and as a developer, I doubt that I'll be developing for iOS anytime soon, the costs are too damn high. Android development works with what ever system I already have and I know what will happen when I upload my app to the market. -
Re:I really don't like sony but...
Bottom of the line dual DIY kit...$199, or you can get a quad refurb for $370 and of course MR PC does things that PS3 simply can't, like actual work, drag and drop hardware transcoding to most of the popular formats, rip those BDs and DVDs and convert them into a nice
.MKV or H.264 .avi and store them on the 1Tb of space so your media is at your fingertips without needing stupid discs, play real FPS and MMOs instead of the auto aiming crap, etc.Hey if a PS3 floats your boat? Do what you want with your money, I hear there are guys that think Halo is actually innovative as well. If you think gear 3 generations behind the curve is worth $250? Hey I'm happy for you. But when you can get an HD4850 for $60 that GPU in the PS3 don't look that impressive and lets be honest folks the PS3 ain't never had a really great game library and nearly all the big titles are either for both or for x360.
Personally I hope they make it, I'm a big believer in competition. But Sony has bled through cash this generation while MSFT had enough cash in the bank it frankly didn't matter if they made a profit or not, but considering how many X360s are out there I'm sure they cleaned up.
The question is are they gonna have enough money to make the PS4. It looks like IBM isn't gonna do anything else with the cell, so they are probably gonna have to jump arches AGAIN which will probably tick off developers that took ages to get the hang of the funky PS3 layout. With Nintendo going to be first out the gate I wouldn't be surprised if MSFT isn't far behind and I don't know if they are gonna be able to string along the PS3 like they did the PS2, it simply doesn't have the back catalog the latter did. And Blu Ray is pretty much a bomb, Netflix and Redbox has pretty much killed BD as for the masses streaming and DVD is "good enough".
I wish them luck I truly do but I bet the next couple of years are gonna be ugly for Sony as they try to come up with the truly insane money it costs to crank out a new console.

And apparently overpriced to boot. Over at deals.woot.com they had The full saga as well as just the original trilogy, both on blu-ray through Amazon.
However, not only did they have them posted yesterday, they also had them for lower prices through the same vendor.
If we can't be at least as relevant as woot, why even bother reporting on this? -

Re:Angry?
That's exactly what Shirt.Woot does on the weekends - anyone with a (free) Woot account can submit a design, anyone who's bought something from Woot before can say "I'd buy that!". The top three are materialized into actual shirts. Some of the people who submit designs are professional graphical artists, but quite a few people are just interested amateurs.
And frequently, they're far better than anything I've ever seen on any other t-shirt site (and it's only $10, which is pretty good for a designer shirt). I mean, just look at this shirt! It's amazing to think that he made that with only something like five or six colors, too (which is another one of the requirements, due to the limitations of cheap silkscreening).

Twenty real reasons he resigned--according to Woot
From: http://www.woot.com/Blog/ViewEntry.aspx?Id=8910
Don't believe the disinformation doublespeak about why Google CEO Eric Schmidt resigned from the Apple Board of Directors this morning. For the story the Applo-Googlo-controlled media doesn't want you to hear, check out the following straight-ish dope leaked by our sources on "the inside". (What those sources are inside of, we're not saying.)
1. Too busy now that gmail is out of beta
2. Nervous about the Apple board's new zero-tolerance meth policy
3. Couldn't afford the gas for the Google-to-Apple monthly commutes
4. Just about to crush Apple with gTunes. Oops, did we just leak that?
5. Preparing to run for governor of Alaska
6. Can no longer deny that the Zune is the future
7. Just felt that they'd grown apart: "It's not Apple, it's me"
8. Tired of lecturing Millard Drexler about his foot-odor problem
9. Somebody keeps eating his pudding out of the break-room fridge
10. Offended about the tetherball court being removed at AT&T's request
11. Confused about how outsourcing works, he's going to serve on the board of some company in India
12. Won't have time now that he's playing bass for Nickelback
13. Upset that Steve Jobs refuses to release his real birth certificate
14. Now he can get that Palm Pre he's been eyeing
15. Never really forgave the Klingons for the death of his boy
16. Board meetings interfered with his plans to camp out for opening night of The Twilight Saga: New Moon
17. Decided to dedicate his life to finally finding a cure for fan death
18. Could no longer stand the anxiety of hiding his forbidden love for Steve Wozniak
19. Was only ever in it for the advance copy of Snow Leopard anyway
20. Couldn't resolve the conflict over which company was going to buy Woot -

Re:so?
If you don't mind a small "REFURB" engraved in the case, consider something like a refurbished Sandisk Sansa C2xx or E2xx, likely among the cheapest Rockbox compatible players out there. Regardless of what an mp3 player is designed for, if it can run Rockbox (and is not an Archos) it will play Ogg Vorbis and mp3 files, as well as a number of other file formats. Woot features players like this often enough that it has become a sort of running joke; if you're patient you might get a good deal there. I got my refurbished 2GB Sansa C250 at Woot for $15 + $5 shipping, then added a 2GB MicroSD card I had picked up elsewhere for around $5.
Rockbox, on any supported player, allows far more customization than the built-in software. You can even write your own programs (plugins) to run on it, or modify the Rockbox software itself, if you're so inclined. Rockbox is open source.

Re:last sentenceIt just occurred to me, while reading your "critique" of
/. pro-Linux bias, that I cannot recall ever seeing the string "w00t!" sans "quotes." Its popular usage seems to be exclusively to attribute it to somebody else, usually collective and vaguely-defined. Also typical is the unconsciously self-damning insult of the people who use "this site" which inevitably includes the speaker. The thing is that this site is a Linux-centric religious institute, so obviously you'll easily and frequently hear "Upgrade myth busted", "Linux to dominate world in 2009" and "w00t!".
Except for you, right?
I wanted to compare the number of Google hits for "w00t!" with & without "quotes" but I guess my regex-fu is weak. I haven't been able to prevent Google from dropping the "quotes" from the string to search so I don't have the data I want to compare. What I did find is that the most popular "woot"-containing page as measured by Google is is obviously selling things, from the preview text:Welcome to Woot. Skip straight to the product or let us know if anything on our site can be improved to further meet your accessibility needs.
...The next three pages are from dictionary/wiki sites, and after that, fewer sites use the string "w00t!" as defined, than are about "w00t!" and its recent victory in the fierce "Word of the Year" competition, which according to the "standards" in place at Reuters, qualifies as "news."
Obviously I haven't made an air-tight case that "w00t!" has only ever been used as trash-talk, attributed falsely to others, but if you can figure out the Google machine you can see for yourself that it's more often used ironically and in stories about the word itself, than in the supposed "definition" as as exclamation of some sort. And considering the comment to which I'm replying, which cites zero evidence for your sweeping claim that "this site is a Linux-centric religious institute, so obviously" it's equally obvious that I've exceeded your standards of evidence already. "To cut a long story short" you've attributed "w00t!" and other trash talk to everybody else who uses this site, instead of finding some facts that support your opinion thatThe truth is that MicroSoft isn't all bad
nor your prediction that
but at the end of the day I do believe people will skip Vista to some degree (ME anyone?) only to hop on board at the next iteration again.
nor your opinion:
not necessarily bad for the market or the consumers.
Why argue ad hominem unless no facts exist which support your assertions?

Hello CUNTDOT fags it's me the idle troll. First Post w00t! I just got done trolling on the main page about some woman talking about some guy's cock, how dumb is that for a troll. Why do women like to play with the hearts of us geeks? I mean earlier this month a girl went out with me and broke up with me like is was a fucking game. The girl I like now is over 200 miles away by car in Ohio. Sherry is her name. Reminds me of an old song that goes like this "Sherry, Sherry Baby..." Maybe Sherry and I will go out someday. Damn this frosty piss is getting a little long. The fucking cuntdot server is bitching because I only waited seven minutes between posts!
