Autism speaks do /not/ speak for us.
That charity does NOT have the best intentions in the world and in no way speaks for me, they are in it for the money, nothing more.
They are pro cure / pro eugenics and wish to develop a pre natal test to wipe autistic/aspie people out.
We are not broken, we do not need fixing. We most certainly do not need eliminating with such vile technology. If you wish to learn about Autism you can try these sites.

Re: Business Plan
Grinch wasn't happy simply because he had sensitivity issues, and didn't fit in; it wasn't his fault that stupid stork dropped him off on the Wrong Planet! It would be like being the only cat in a room full of dogs and all of the dogs keep trying to turn you into a dog. Those Christmas carols sheesh they're like finger nails dragged across a blackboard! Those Whos are luckey Grinch didn't go Postal on them istead of take their christmas gifts and decorations.

Re:Canticle for Leibowitz
lol... that is one way to look at it. People are kind. Now they're dead. [grin]
I read your post and couldn't help but google "depressing philosopher." I have a dark sense of humour. Anyway, I don't know why I found it so funny, but I did, that the first result would be exactly what I was thinking about first: Discussion List on "Who is the most depressing philosopher. Given the subject of this post I shouldn't have been surprised that a group somewhere would be discussing philosophies that are truly depressing.
However, I found a most heartening result on, of all places, Facebook. And it made me laugh my ass off. It is so droll it is beyond belief. I love this humour. It is a Facebook page for Depressing Philosophers Who Say That Nothing Matters So Why Bother Anyway. If you click the link you will see the humour. Honest.

Re:sure.. dismiss the uniqueness of aspergers
Online essays don't necessarily point either way -- my text messages often span over 3 messages (diagnosed nearly 5 years ago, had plenty of time to deal with the symptoms), and I've read about a high-functioning autistic guy who's one of the best speechwriters in America (Send in the Idiots, a short book if anyone is interested). Check out some of the posts over at wrongplanet some time if you don't believe me; sitting behind a screen makes it a lot easier to communicate, as one can think about what they want to say and take their time with it. Also, there's nothing like body language to compound the difficulty of communicating.

It depends what you're after
An interesting read is send in the idiots (named after a phrase a classmate would say over and over), which is a bit of a mash-up of philosophy and science. It essentially explores autism - it's a series of anecdotes as the author tries to track down everyone he went to school with. While this is dealing with autism rather than aspergers, a lot of it translates over (I've got aspergers myself), it gives a bit of insight into how we tick.
If you were after a more concrete, "help me deal with problems" book then I doubt you'll find much out there. Aspergers affects everyone differently, so even if you can find something there's no guarantee it would be any help (For example, I'm hypersensitive to light and sound, wheras someone else might not be able to concentrate if they're wearing jeans). Rather, I suggest you check out this website. The views are diverse to say the least (ranging from hating ASD to loving it), but most people are well balanced and if you have any queries they should be more than happy to help you out -
On the rise, yes I thought so
An exorcist should be called when "the moral certainty has been reached that the person is possessed", said Father Nanni, a member of the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints. That could be indicated by radical and disturbing changes in the person's behaviour and voice, or an ability to garble in foreign languages or nonsensical gibberish. Father Gabriele Amorth said people who are possessed by Satan vomit shards of glass and pieces of iron, scream, dribble and slobber, utter blasphemies and have to be physically restrained
Dear Vatican,
My child has autism. She puts stuff in his mouth - anything. Most of the time she just speaks gibberish but she also does the echolalia thing to the point some people think she speaks fluent Japanese! One day, after ingesting some shards of glass and pieces of iron, she threw them up and started dribbling and slobbering. I suppose she was in pain or perhaps just upset because she was screaming and uttering blasphemies too. This all happened at school and as she was uncontrollable, she was deemed to need to be physically restrained.Should I call an excorcist?
Love,
H. -
autism
There is a theory that Assange is autistic, which would account for his tumultuous relationships. http://www.wrongplanet.net/postxf146011-0-15.html Check out what Mercurial wrote, who considers herself autistic.

math failure
it's alright, the math assumes that nobody is nearsighted. Since nearsightedness is very common, the article's comments don't hold true at all.
Some people can see magnitudes smaller arcmin than
.6 up close, in fact like .2 or so. Anyone with 20/10 vision (which is common with correction such as eyeglasses or contacts) is going to still see plenty of pixelation. It's still a substantial improvement in pixels, but the article is incorrect.

some evidence
Diagnosed aspie here. Mod parent up!
Also, to provide some evidence to backup the claim about cures scaring the shit out of us, have a read through some of the posts on this forum, particularly under "media representation". -
Re:+1 Clever! :)
Maybe the both of you should check out this website. It's for people on the Autistic spectrum, no joke.

Re:if there is a possibility for a screwup ...
I called GoDaddy and they told me "we're having network issues. We've been having them for a while. I don't know when they'll be fixed but they should be soon." My site is now resolving ( http://wrongplanet.net/ ) but it wasn't resolving when i called. He didn't say anything about daylight savings time and some of my other domains with godaddy had no problems.

What you really need...
I ran into this dilemma after Wrong Planet got slashdotted for an interview with Bram Cohen. I've had to hire a professional publicist and contract out freelancers to help me code. Managing a big site like yours really is hard but the hardest part is getting people to go to the site. Congratulations on your succcess. Your dilemma is what many would call a "high quality problem."

Old news
I wrote a review more than a month ago and submitted it to slashdot. The problem I had with Gmail was that I was used to having my mail locally, so I could read it no matter what. Google didn't offer an imap or even pop3 option.

Three related articlesA study in Australia using fMRI showing why certain forms of autism adversely affect problem-solving abilities.
A Neurology journal article on the anatomy of Asperger's, as seen from fMRI scans
Another neurology article, on the anatomy of Autism, as seen from fMRI scans
The research at the Institute of Psychiatry, by Professor Declan Murphy is beginning to indicate that autism affects the frontal and mid-sections of the brain, whereas Aspergers appears to affect the frontal sections only. Nonetheless, other studies (not linked to here) have shown that those with asperger's have an elevated probability of having autistic children. In other words, there's good evidence they share mechanisms BUT there is also good evidence that autism outside of Asperger's involves additional mechanisms that are NOT present in Asperger's.
I asked the IoP about research on Asperger's and autism a while back, and they pointed me to the following lecture (which does not appear to be on the web anywhere):
Frith U. (2004) Emanuel Miller lecture: confusions and controversies about Asperger syndrome. Journal of Child Psychology & Psychiatry & Allied Disciplines. 45(4):672-86, 2004 May
I hope this information is useful, trivially interesting or even interestingly trivial, depending on perspective. -
Re:Savants
I'm a savant, in fact I was a "low functioning" autistic while I was younger. Fortunately, a really loving group of friends accepted me the way I was, I got support, a psychologist, love
... I spent two years gradually entering the minds of those around me, now I understand (mostly) the whole social regime. I'm called a genius by many (I resent that), that I never get anything wrong ... Is it wrong not to get facts right? Is it so awful to think perfectly objectively? I feel extremely lucky to be able to be autistic, help maintain http://wrongplanet.net/ & also enjoy the social aspects of life, which are beautiful, fascinating, & above all so much fun. My brain (or rather EQ should I say) is larger than "normal", as shown by a CAT scan, so I suppose that supports this study ... Great findings. I love autism, I'm going in for clinical psychology myself. I hope that didn't drift off topic to a large degree ... -
Re:Very bad in a printing accident.
Yeah. I heard that cars which go more than 5 mph may be bad when people accidently crash into each other. I think all cars with a max speed of more than 5 mph should be taken off the road since people have accidents.

I use Monster cables in my video studio.
I was sold on Monster cables the day I replaced the wire between my computer and my Bose computer speakers. (This was the wire that came with my Bose speakers, BTW.) With a Monster cable, all of a sudden I was getting a LOT more bass. Songs I'd heard a zillion times sounded a lot better.
Some time ago, I noticed that DVDs on my mom's player didn't look much better than normal TV programs. I looked deeper, and found that the video cable between the DVD player and the TV was one of those thin-wire cheap pieces of crap. I replaced it with a spare composite-video Monster cable I had lying around, and the picture quality improved dramatically.
I use nothing but Monster cables in my home-based video studio (a 100% Linux creation, with a Canopus ADVC-300, kino, smilutils, and mjpegtools. Given the experience above, and especially given all the RF interference generated by a typical computer, I didn't dare try anything else.
In the end, it comes down to whether you can see/hear the difference. Not everyone is wired the same. I can see and hear details that most people can't sense -- so much, in fact, that I'm starting to wonder if I have Asperger's Syndrome or something.

dailykos.com
DailyKOS.com has a lot more info than slate has and had it a lot earlier. Also, I was talking to a DNC member and the internal top secret DNC polls supposedly had Kerry only losing in Virginia by 1%. I guess I'm not supposed to tell anyone, but oh well.
