Re:Utah as a religious dictatorship
Your parent poster said "except where a serious moral issue is involved", which this is.
Right, so now we need to legislate morality, right? Your own scriptures and leaders talk about how important personal moral agency is, and then you turn around and try to take that agency away (at least trying to project your perverted view of God's justice onto our own actual real life justice system).
James E. Faust is the 2nd Councelor in the First Presidency, which translates roughly into "3rd in command". He is Democratic.
That doesn't change the fact that Democrats comprise somewhere around 1% of your church's leadership. In typical Mormon apologist fashion, you are pulling out a solitary exception to a general trend, and then trying to use that as evidence against a point being made with that trend.
Unfortunately, enemies often are convinced of the truth of half truths, so they are not good sources of information.
For the record, when a Mormon apologist says "half truth", what he really means is, "truth that makes us look bad that hasn't been sugar-coated or whitewashed to try to mitigate the damage it causes to our outlandish claims." Your own Boyd K. Packer said it best, "Some things that are true are not very useful.".

Re:I just lost respect for Pixar
Except Garfield isn't even warm in the first place. I've read it when it's been in the paper, but it's NEVER been funny. At least Dilbert tries to have jokes, even if many of them fall flat, but Garfield doesn't have anything. There are NO jokes, it's just some cat sitting there. Thank god it's been cancelled.

Re:the killer feature of HURD
Yeah, it's on 2.6-mm right now, and there's a whole infrastructure to use it as a stepping stone to crash-dumping -- kernel 1 crashes, loads a small stripped kernel 2 into a previsouly reserved portion of memory, dumps memory, registers, etc of the dying kernel and then reboots. Pretty nifty.
Oh, and judging from the announcement of kexec, it's been around (or at least under active development) since Nov 2002 (they mention kernel 2.5.48 in that README file, and that kernel was released on Nov 18th 2002). So, once again, a novel idea from HURD. Or not. -
The best "sucks" page in the whole universe
Of course the subject matter of Maddox's page is not for the weak of heart or mind. So if you are easily offended, please do not read his web pages. He is, like me, a fellow pirate.
Maddox a man with an opinion on everything.
Read how he says that Orbitz blows.
Read how he trashes Websense.

Mismanagement of funds
One cause I see for the US school system failing is how so much money they pour into programs that don't do much to promote academics at all, namely athletics. Sports are great and all in a recreational sense, but I don't see why money should be diverted from things like new textbooks, art and music programs, refitting a computer lab, etc. just so a handful of students can play games after or sometimes during school. I think Maddox would agree.

Re:Mormon's in Space
Hey, thanks for that completely fucking worthless post. I'm sure you thought that was very witty. I've got a news flash for you. It wasn't. Cheap imitations of Maddox haven't been relevant since about 1998.
And learn how to use an apostrophe, retard. It's fourth grade English. Despite the low quality of your rant, I think you have a good shot at mastering it. -

Re:Go Creative
The second thing that comes to mind is this: 400,000 people a week would seem to disagree with your assertion.
For a moment there, I thought I was reading The Best Page in the Universe! ;-) But yes, I would have to agree with you. I find it ironic that /. readers who openly attack M$ for being so closed about everything are all eager to embrace a just-as-closed iPod. (Unlike Darwin, iTunes is not open sourced. At all. And iTMS is not interoperable.) However, I do see that Apple is much more of a benevolent dictator than M$ tends to be. And they really "innovate" in the true sense of the word, quite differently than when M$ "innovates" for sure! -

How?
How -- if at all -- should policymakers attempt to resolve emerging digital media conflicts?
Perhaps the policy makers at the RIAA should realize people are tired of bending over for them. People are sick of spending $18 on a CD with only a single new track and a bunch of old-favorites-remixed-so-they-are-like-new tracks. Actually, I think people are sick of paying $18 for a CD period.
Perhaps a little out of date, but Maddox still makes a good point. -

flybookThe flybook promises to be a nice little tablet.
I currently have a Toshiba Portege M200 running Linux. When I do use it folded back as a tablet, it's when I'm just reading something. The handwriting recognition (xstroke) is just too frustrating to use for much text so I fold it back around to laptop style if I need to type. The one problem with reading on my m200 is that the machine is too heavy and awkward at 2kg.
The flybook is about half that at 1.1kg. The problem currently is no one has gotten the touchscreen to work in linux. (see handtops discussions). I'm waiting to see before I buy it.

How... uh... prophetic?
From the article:
AOL's Bird predicts that teens will be among the first to embrace new, Web-based video technology. "You will very soon be able to shoot video messages and play those video messages on your blog that your friends can go to," Bird says. "So your community, your scheduling, your friends, your holidays - all of this stuff will live in an online environment."
They already can, there's already a subculture based around it, and Maddox has already made fun of it. -
Re:a golden can of an animal raised in misery
Ooo, he links to Peta.
Let's all go naked, cover ourselves in pig blood, and stand outside department stores looking for people wearing fur so we can rub the blood all over them. Then we can put up a huge billboard with a picture of a cooked human baby and a happy family eating it, making sure that it's so disgusting it'll cause traffic accidents.
Get a grip, man, PETA is a joke. The more THEY say eating meat is bad, the more meat I will eat. That's a huge virtual middle finger to you.
Remember what Maddox says:
http://maddox.xmission.com/c.cgi?u=sponsor
For every animal you don't eat, I'll eat three. -
How?
The article doesn't really explain how this actually works. Do the cloned cells somehow stimulate the body to natural "regrow" the damaged tissue? Or is it a literal transplant?
Still, this is great news for all of us, as it is definitive proof that stem cells can be put to good use. Too late for some, though

Re:Some little problems...
The wheel spun and smoked like a funny car doing a burn-out, and the guy went down so hard that his head bounced about six inches off of the floor.
Man, if only there were some way to get around this obvious safety deficiency! It would probably take tons more expensive electronics and a couple more gyroscopes or something... -

Re:Triple the bandwidth with the same bottlenecksI was using t-mobile for unlimited data over gprs. It is cheap, but it's so slow its usefulness is borderline.
I finally switched to using bluetooth to my new verizon phone and it's working great... at two to four time the data rate (and round trip pings take about 500ms instead of over a second)

We were a mirror...
Well, we were a mirror on www.electoral-vote7.com until we were pulled from DNS earlier this evening. We handled the load without a problem, even while hostrocket.com got crushed. Our services were voluntary and we neither asked for or received any compensation for our mirror. We served about 10 million hits today on the website today and peaked at about 2.5 mil/hour earlier in the day.
I don't know why we and the other non-hostrocket.com mirrors were pulled from the DNS round-robin, but I do know that the decsion to remove us and the other non-hostrocket sites from the DNS round-robin for www.electoral-vote.com was made without consulting us (which is fine, it just seemed a bit odd.) After we were pulled, hostrocket.com basically tipped over and the site went down hard. -

GOT to do something about that name.
We'd all take the Secret Service a lot more seriously if they updated their name. Back in 1865 it may have been way cool to call your treasury cops a "secret service", but now it alternates between quaintness and confusion Since they're now part of DHS, how about "Homeland Enforcement"? Make a great TV show!

Apparently they have an experimental patch wherein you can boot a "panic" kernel if you get a kernel panic.
Sounds like a neat idea -- configure your UP kernel as the panic kernel for emergency situations. The machine would "reboot" on it's own, much faster than if a watchdog triggered and cycled the power. -
