Concrete Example: For a large portion of the 19th-20th Century many Greeks measured distance in cigarettes - how many cigarettes I will smoke while travelling from one place to another. There is no cognate in English for this. Not only that, but the language usage indicates a specific timespan as well as cultural differences.
We (Greeks) still "measure distance in cigarettes"! I am a typical middle aged Greeks, and in the past few months i had at least a couple of my friends in separate occasions telling me "the place we are going it's just a cigarette away from where we are" when meeting them - i don't use this distance/time unit (it's like the "light year(s)" thing...) often because i smoke a pipe!
We have so many references to this "cigarette distance/time unit" in our culture that you don't need Artificial Intelligence to understand why anti-smoking campaigns don't work well in Greece - e.g. a song by (probably) our most respected singer, titled (very roughly translated) "i wish pain was... one cigarette distance"!

Your choice to avoid these major services forces you to opt out of society so while you do technically have a choice, it's a choice between being part of society and "choosing" to be a social outcast. Since not participating in society all but guarantees you'll have a hard time even getting a job or communicating with other people, the "choice" is not much better than having to choose between eating or not eating a box of arsenic.

Until a few years ago, my parents were still using a 16" CRT TV with a built in VCR player. Really looked quite Space 1999'ish with the square 4:3 aspect ratio. Still have a memory of seeing those monochrome globe TV sets along with a sphere chair and thinking that would be so cool for my room.

Yeah, I was REALLY impressed that they somehow scared-up about 6 of those for the first Men In Black movie, in the "Interview" scene. It was hilarious to see those guys trying to figure out how to fill-out their questionnaires up against the sides of those egg-chairs.

Re:Dumbing down for the lowest-common denominator
Well... Many people, especially the youngsters, are use to using smartphones and tablets, where you usually only see/use one app at a time.
It sounds like MS's attempt to push a tablet/phone UI onto desktop users with Windows 8. They ended up with the odd situation that people who were doing to buy a tablet or phone bought one anyway, and not from Microsoft. Meanwhile people who wanted a desktop machine mostly held off on buying a Windows machine with Windows 8 - they kept their Windows 7 machine, or they bought a Mac.
And people who did buy a Windows 8 machine were often baffled by it
How Real People Will Use Windows 8
I bet a lot of these machines got returned inside the 30 day period.
I remember my parents who had an liked iPads, iPhones and Android devices, not wanting a machine with anything but 7 on it.
Now personally I didn't like it out of the box, but Windows 8+Classic Shell was fine. I set it up on the machines of people who complained about it, and they were happy. I didn't buy any machines with it on though - I stuck with Windows 7 on my laptop because that still works fine.
I've got Windows 10 in a VM on my Mac and it's fine even without any third party hacks like Classic Shell. So it's probably OK for non technical types - they're not going to return it.
And now it seems like MS have decided to try a new 'bold and innovative' UI. I reckon it will work out for them as well as Windows 8 did.

Pretty much. Now they've gone back to a start menu from a start screen you can tell that the people who pushed the start screen at Microsoft are going to push some new UI innovation which will irritate everyone outside of Microsoft.
Well a few tech reviewers will write articles where they cut and paste phrases from Microsoft's press release and say 'much better than the old Windows way of doing things' in return for a swag bag from a hot girl at Microsoft PR. And then go back to using their Macbooks.
A few people will point out that for people who actually use Windows at work it is vastly inferior. Or for people who use Windows at home and are not that technical it is completely baffling.

Microsoft will ignore this of course and push it out by auto update. And then they'll notice that strangely their share of all devices browsing the net, already level pegging with Android, has dropped a bit more as non technical types flee to Android, iOS, macOS etc. Technical types will figure out hack to revert the changes or head for Mac or Linux. Corporations will pay for downgrade rights to older MS OSs.
Microsoft will insist everything is fine for a while, and then introduce a new OS which claims to roll back the changes but which does not. Amusing comics will be drawn.

Market share will continue to l fall, but technical types who need Windows will stick with their hack. Or rather a newer version, because Microsoft broke the first one with the new OS release. Or move to Mac because they want to be able to build apps for Android and iOS, the only OSs that really matter commercially now that the WIndows ship is sinking even faster than before. If Google were smart at this point they'd offer something which is a bit more capable than a Chromebook, AndroidBook for example, to try to hoover up some of those people fleeing Windows but who don't want a Mac and can't use Linux but they probably aren't. Apple will probably do something stupid to put people off Macs, analogous to their decision to solder in ram and SSD on all new models to stop people upgrading them. What that will be I'm not sure. Switch the whole keyboard to a larger version of the TouchBar for example.
Finally Microsoft will release an OS which really does roll back most of the changes, the way Windows 10 has a start menu with a load of 'tile shit' embedded in it that no one uses but it's sort of OK because it has the Win32 apps people actually use there too. Corporations will still try to pay for downgrade rights, and Microsoft will tell them they can't anymore.
And then the cycle will start anew! It's the circle of life!

Everyone already agrees to all the bullshit that a particular piece of software demands of them - either during the installation or when starting the software.
Or during updates.What would be necessary goes beyond tracking or consent.
Basically, there's a need for legislation treating software and hardware developers as presumed criminals and fraudsters - requiring proof and regular inspection that they are not defrauding or abusing their customers, attempting to do so or allowing for it through negligence.
Think treating all software and hardware with same scrutiny as medical devices and procedures.You know... as you would expect whatever it is that your dentist is putting inside your mouth during a root canal procedure.
Is it just filling material - or is she putting a tracking device in there, so the reptilian overlords could track you using satellites and cellphone towers?Same scrutiny should be given to all the cases of giving away "free" software, purposefully making software obsolete or packaging the same old functionality in a "new" application just because the developer has to push SOMETHING out there every quarter.
Also, backward compatibility and right to repair for hardware would have to be obligatory, and could be waived only by making all the software running on obsolete and "reasonably beyond repair" hardware open source and "free" - unless said hardware/software is a part of a medical device.
In which case support would be obligatory "for the life" of the patient.
You know... so people wouldn't have to worry about being asphyxiated if a fuse blows out during the night. -

My fav is this doctor who makes more sense than all the rest combined. Then again if the BBC could have afforded to hire this Deviated Prevert he may easily have received my vote for best Dr Who. Certainly Douglas Adams would have had a blast working with either of my choices for Dr. Who, either of whom in the best scripts would have had one hell of a hard time keeping a dead pan straight face or keeping to a script.

The disadvantage of vacuum pressure

The disadvantage of basing it on vacuum pressure is that their force is limited to ambient pressure. For sea level that's 14.7 PSI, or about 10 Newtons per square cm of muscle cross sectional area. The typical human muscle can pull with a force of about 35 N/cm^2. So these artificial muscles are considerably weaker than biological muscles. Sorry all you Mechwarrior fans.
It might turn out to be useful in underwater applications. Pressure underwater increases by 1 atmosphere approximately every 10 meters of depth, so it wouldn't take much depth to greatly exceed human musclepower. The problem might actually be being able to pull a vacuum under those pressures.
Incidentally, air pressure is also what they use to make zero-g weightlifting exercise equipment. -

Another interview with Pai
Pai also sat down with Reason a few months ago to discuss his goals as FCC chairman and his argument for reversing the Open Internet Order. You can see that interview here.
But Slashdot is doing a disservice conflating two issues here. Submitters' abuse of the online comment process has nothing to do with the propriety of reversing the last chairman's effort to regulate the internet.
It needs to be emphasized loudly: regulatory bodies are not democratic. Congress is the place where representatives hash out the direction of the US government, and commissions like the FCC are to follow the direction decided upon legislatively. They are not to act as a shadow legislature overriding and undermining the decisions made by Congress.
If you don't like that Congress decided we should have a light-touch approach to the internet, then great! Write your congressman and work to change the law. Meanwhile, the FCC will address the issues brought up in its comment period regardless of who submitted them as the law directs it to do.
